3 words... Ask for Betty. Ok, so I'm a dude with long hair, nothing fancy, no layers... but I am always hesitant to let a stranger cut my hair. When I do find someone good I keep going back...even if it means going to the other side of the bay. When I sat down, I told Betty I had read good things on yelp, and she was so sweet..she patted my shoulder and smiled..a few seconds later she says quietly "Big pressure for me" and we laugh. I tell her don't sweat it. I wasn't worried. She cut my hair great, but what I really loved was her sweet nature. She walked me through everything she was going to do before she did it. The same was a caring doctor or surgeon will. Every update she gave me, like "I'm going to do your sideburns now"... I replied with the same "ok, cool" Afterward she exclaimed "So easy!" and we laughed. I guess she was expecting I'd want something fancy. Anyways, I'm happy. I have a regular stylist now. Yeaaah... I know most Yelpers have said good things about this place but I'm going to have to disagree. While Bao and Julie are supposed to be great, I had the unfortunate pleasure of allowing Sherry to cut my hair last week, and uhm, yeeeaaah. I look like Triangle Head now. Or as my girlfriend called it, "Bell Head." Thanks a lot, Sherry. When I got home I looked in the mirror and Sherry had missed several long, thick strands of hair. Not really going for the rat tail look, thanks. I guess the moral of the story is if your hair is different in any way shape or form than the usual straight, non-fussy hair, don't go to a cheap salon. Just don't. read more

I don't have great needs or expectations, and I'm not particularly specific about my style when i get my haircuts, but I wasn't pleased when a barber made assumptions about how high to cut my sideburns and how short "a trim" is - so i yelped my way to nice cuts. Julie is great! She's really nice, cuts off less than i suggest and asks for feedback if i'm not specific, and provides good recommendations when i'm not sure. Overall I've been looking for interactive haircuts for years, and i've finally found it. I guess that's the price I pay for years of cheaper haircuts. read more

This place was great, I came on recommendation of my friend to get my hair cut by Julie/a (can't remember her name) but she was on vacation so Betty cut my hair. Betty was really nice and really quick, I get my hair cut really short into a fohawk and she did a really good job. She showed me a picture out of a magazine to make sure thats what I wanted and I appreciated that she double checked before cutting my hair. I'd def come back again here to get my hair cut and $16 for a haircut isn't bad. I paid $50 last month and wasn't satisfied with my haircut and preferred Nice Cuts job over the other salon. read more

I love this place for a quick, cheap simple trim. During covid they don't wash your hair, so go with clean hair (they didn't blow dry mine either, but I didn't ask). My hair is medium length and fine, it was $22. Better than the quarantine haircut I gave myself for sure! Thank you read more

Great, cheap clipper cuts from Lisa! I have been going to Nice Cuts for about 7 years and I can always get an appointment when I want one. For $16 this is not the place for the fussy customer. It's fine. A bit of a more personal vibe than supercuts, but they just raised their prices to $20 for a men's cut, so if you're looking for something simple you can probably find better value. They do make appointments and take credit card. Women's cuts are $35. read more

Lisa ROCKS! Best cheap haircuts I've ever had. Consistent for over 5 years now. Update: 1/17/08 - Just learned about Lisa's move to her own place around the corner on Castro St., and that's where I'll be going now as I've had less success at Nice Cuts when I've let anyone else sub for her. Congrats to her for the transition to what I hope will mean only great things for her. I should add that Sherri cuts my boyfriend's hair here. He's always happy with it, I think it looks great, and he still gets it cut here at Nice Cuts. I would beware of walking in and accepting any cutter without info about him or her, because in the first year or two before I found Lisa, I would do that and some of the cuts weren't so good. read more

Went here for the first time and was extremely impressed. I got Jenny (ask for her if you can!) and asked for a 1 on the side, blended, leaving something on top to do something with it. My hair isn't awesome and typically clumps/falls flat in places, but she conjured up some stylist wizardry and blended my sides better than any haircut I've ever received. Bottom line, they know how to cut mens hair - and it makes sense considering they're based in the heart of the Castro. Will definitely be returning. 15 years ago I walked into Nice Cuts thinking I was just going to get a trim and spontaneously decided to do something completely different. BB hooked me up with an amazing hair style that I still get compliments on (it's slightly different now but not much). So that's where the 5 stars comes in. So when BB left town - waaaagh! - I headed back to Nice Cuts. I have now found Sherri. While the cut isn't quite as good as BB (how could it be after 15 years of practice?!) it works and I'm happy. I went for the first time and the ladies are great! Their sister studio up on Chestnut is very good, but a bit of a hike for me. This location is much closer. The reviews on Jenny being good with men's hair were dead on (I'm sure the prior reviews of Leah being the same way apply). The price can't be beat, especially for the quality! $16 for a basic haircut, and a shampoo, dry, and haircut os $22! Best of all they get the order right - haircut, then wash: that way I don't shed everywhere. They take appointments. I plan on making more in the future! read more

Had three different stylists; would not go back again for 2 of the 3. The third was pretty good, but she's hardly ever there. I tried making an appointment and the other stylists either refused or pretended they didn't understand what I wanted. They try to convince you not to wait and let them cut your hair, and steal the sale away from their coworker! I gave up. My husband and I have been here a couple of times. Lisa did my hair every time I went. I don't recall who did my husband's hair, but he was pleased with the result (he's picky about his cut). Good prices and good quality. Lisa is now around the corner I believe... But, Nice Cuts is still a great place to go. Everyone was friendly and happy to help. Betty is the best, I told her what I needed and she delivered exactly what I wanted, not too short with volume so I can comb it on the side. My hair looks full and healthy, I'll definitely come back. Walk ins and appointments accepted. This is my first hair cut in SF since I moved here two weeks ago from New Orleans, and it'll probably be the only place I'll be getting my hair cut going forward. I have been going to this place for 7 years, what I like the most is that you can drop in and rarely have to wait more than 5 min if any wait at all, considering they cut your hair in 20 min it is a really efficient use of your time. You don't have to explain in detail what you want they already know, i usually just tell them my hair clipper number, how much they need to cut at the top and after 20 min I am all set with a good cut. If you are looking a for a good cut at a good price it is the place. read more

You didn't hear it from me, but Julie is the one to go to for all your hair cutting needs. She slows down, takes her time, does things right, and is the most meticulous hair dresser in the joint. Expect to pay $20 for a haircut and $5 for a beard trim. I always walk out of there feeling pretty sharp. Amazing little hair salon in the heart of the Castro. I walked in on a Saturday afternoon with no appointment & was taken to a chair for a trim right away. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. By the time I left every single chair was full, so I'm lucky I was able to get in! I didn't get the name of the woman who cut my hair, but I wish I did because she gave me the best trim I've ever had & that really surprised me because I have been to some very nice salons in the past. She also listened to me when I told her exactly what I wanted & how much I wanted her to trim off. This wasn't a typical cut either. She didn't wash my hair and cut it, but instead cut it entirely while it was dry. Only water she used on my hair was with the spray bottle she had which lightly misted my hair. The total cost of my cut was $20 (without tip). Cheapest trim I have ever paid for & by far the best. If I wasn't moving to Oregon in a month, this would be my permanent go to salon! read more

Honestly, I would not recommend at all. I went to get my hair cut today and the woman cut it terribly unevenly. She spent much more time cutting away on the right side of my hair, resulting in an uneven and choppy mess. There is a whole chunk of my hair on the bottom layer that is much shorter than the rest, so I could not possibly go out with straight hair as it looks terrible. The stylist was rushing through my cut so that she could go on to the next customer and demanded a tip when I payed. I will not be going back there. read more

OK. Perhaps asking for a good haircut for under $20 is asking too much in San Francisco. Perhaps going to a place where the large majority of people having their hair cut is men should be another warning sign. But for some reason I expected the style and reputation of the Castro (and some positive words on yelp) to win through on this one. I expected too much. When I told Sherry I didn't particularly like what she was coming up with on my head she spent more time combing it. After about 10 minutes she basically just said "you're done" and motioned me to the door. I felt completely unsatisfied and rushed. When I got home I had chunks of hair that had been combed behind my ears rather than cut, and spent 10 minutes at the mirror with scissors myself. I will have to get another hair-cut this week. read more

Okay I've been here 5 times The second time was the best. That was only because the person getting a haircut right before me was very close to what I wanted but every since then they just don't seem to understand what I'm trying to say. Everyone else seems to leave with a nice short haircut...me I get home and say why is it still so long. I said could you use a 3 on the sides. Looks longer to me. While waiting I here people say 3 and theirs looks much shorter then mine. So if I go back I'll just was for a basic clipper cut and see if that is as short as I'm looking for. Stay away as far as you can. You're better off with Salon Baobao with an extra 20. Came in and as for an inch off the top of my hair and an inch and a half off the top. Homegirl does the sides and is doing an ok job. But then she started shaving the top as if I wanted to shave my head Britney Spears circa 2007. I started freaking out and told her wtf she she was doing. And she told me that an inch and a half off equates to the number of the blade. I was furniture shopping with my BF, and I overheard this gorgeous silver fox with gorgeous hair tell another gentleman- "...oh you like my cut? I always go to NICE CUTS on 17th and Castro." I looked over at my own fox, who was grizzly and sporting his own mini-fro, and said, "we're going to NICE CUTS." Its in our neighborhood, and we were getting off the muni a few days later and chanced a drop-in the day before Valentine's. My BF got Betty with no wait at all, and I'm glad he did. My BF is a gorgeous filipino, with thick semi-wavy hair when it gets long, and he's got kind of a big noggin (love you!) so I can be picky if they cut it too short on top, not enough on the sides, etc. I didn't even have to worry. He came out looking delicious, on the CHEAP. I'd recommend this place to anyone in the neighborhood who wants a great men's style cut. Obvs there are lots of men's salons in the neighborhood, but I didn't know a cheap haircut could turn out looking so classy on my guy! I'm sure he'll go back. I was happy. read more
