I looked up and found Connie at Special Haircut so I headed over and I'm damn glad I did. Small clean shop, solo barber and she has been doing this for many decades. I'm so glad I decided to give Connie a chance recently as I was in need of an affordable but quality barber/stylist in San Francisco. I had been biking out to Judy at Gentle Cuts on Taraval in the Sunset but Judy was hit or miss and I often was on the barber seat's edge, not knowing if I would get the haircut I was looking for or if I'd leave the salon with way too much hair chopped off. Connie is amazing and she will be my go-to haircut spot in SF for now on. I have a very particular men's fade haircut that, for reasons unknown to me, has been very challenging for most hairstylists, from student stylists at upscale salons to small neighborhood barbers. I brought an iPad with photos of the cut I wanted and Connie nailed it, taking her time to make sure she didn't shave or cut too much hair off and always checking in with me to make sure the cut was shaping up to my liking. Connie is able to talk and cut hair at the same time! She's very personable and is doing everything she can to keep her prices affordable. $25 for a quality haircut is worth every penny. Connie has incredible attention to deail and gave me a better haircut than what I've found in fancy salons downtown. Connie serves up quick, affordable, and quality haircuts out of this no-frills, in-and-out, neighborhood institution. I've come here a couple times now, and as new client I couldn't help but notice Connie's friendliness and communication skills. I'm not the best at describing what I'm looking for, even with visual aids, but Connie listens and talks through different options, which I really appreciate. During the cut, she sprinkles in check-ins to make sure the it's on track for what I'm looking for and she's also very receptive to feedback. These little things matter to me, so mark that as a pass with flying colors. As for quality, Connie does a solid fade and works with asian male hair no problem. Cuts start at $25, cash only w/o tip. Walk-ins only. She works quickly, but I've never felt rushed, even with a queue building on the seats behind me. She always makes sure that I'm getting what I'm looking for before I get out of the chair, and she's real one for that. For less than $20 in the city, this place is a gem. Special Haircut really is special, and has been my hair cut go-to spot ever since moving to San Francisco (3 years now). I have no interest in going anywhere else, as they do a great job every time! I'm very lucky to live only a couple blocks away. There are two very nice women working here and I've gotten hair cuts from both of them. They seem to get a lot of repeat customers, and often have a line out the door before opening. I went in the morning and there was no line. But I can imagine how it fills up cos there are only 2 seats. It is a place to get haircuts, simple as that. I showed a picture and got what I wanted. Been trying a few of these under $20 haircut places since I moved to the city. I judge the way hair dresser takes care of my hair by the way they touch my head and hair, and the lady was taking care of me. The quality is def top range at this price. Connie is an amazing professional! She has been cutting my hair for the past 4 years and I'll never go anywhere else. I've struggled to find a barber who provides quality work for affordable prices, my entire life. I used to go to other barbers in SF, but I've never found that perfect mix of professionalism, affordability, or quality until i stumbled upon Special Haircut. I just happened to be walking around Mission and Cesar Chavez while I was waiting to meet a friend. I had been trying to schedule a haircut for a couple of days, but none of the barbers I was associated with at the time were willing to work around my schedule. I saw Special Haircut and just took a chance because I really wanted a haircut. At first glance, it's definitely a hole in the wall, and it's a really small place. But, Connie has a HUGE personality and was so welcoming. She was working on someone, but told me to wait just a few minutes and she'd be ready for me. Once the other customer was finished, she swept up and told me to sit in the chair. She's an excellent conversationalist, and an even better hair professional. She executed the perfect low fade and gave me a nice clean trip up top. After she was done, I knew I was officially a regular. I can't say enough about this place. I'd been walking past this place for 6 months before I'd even noticed it was there. Totally hidden gem run by a hilarious and gregarious skilled hairdresser named Connie. The first time, I was a little nervous because it was so small, because haircuts/perms/coloring were so CHEAP, and because it seemed to cater to the constant stream of MEN ducking in on their lunch break. But I had just gotten a haircut somewhere else that I was unhappy with, and so walked in and asked if Connie did women's hair. She smiled and waved me in. As I waited, I realized that all these guys were regulars, and that Connie cut the hair on each of their heads completely differently, depending on what looked best for each of them. I became less nervous, and then... got the best haircut I'd gotten in SF. All my friends were shocked that my "designer haircut" was only $10. (I made sure to tip her 50%!) I just went back today, and... it wasn't a fluke. I wanted something slightly different, and she was able to work with me to figure out exactly what I wanted, and would stop intermittently during the cut to ask me "Okay, how about this? Like this? This length?" Behind me in line was a woman with poofy curly hair, which is completely different from my difficult Asian hair. She was amazed by my Haircut #2, even though she also swore by Connie. Special Hair Cuts is close to my heart. I lived in San Francisco from 1994 to 2003, and in the late 1990s, I started going there to get my hair cut. The owner has consistently given me wonderful hair cuts. I always leave feeling a lot better than I did coming in, and it's not just because she does a great job on my hair. One of the worst haircuts ive ever had. Language barrier, improper use of clippers. Amateur hour for sure. Beware.

I've been to this spot a few times now and everytime they have done an amazing job knowing how to cut my hair. My hair is not the easiest to cut, since it's really curly and thick. They were able to cut it short enough, but so short that she only needed to use clippers and showed her scissor cutting skills. Very impressive! read more
