I experienced blatant racism from one of the servers here one night. It was so bad that I left early. Completely ruined the evening. I issued a formal complaint to Niche about it. It's been over a month and I have received no response. I've followed up plenty of times and have asked General Manager George Ellefthros to call me so we could have a conversation about it. I never received a phone call back. Do not support a business that casually disregards discrimination. I don't care how cheap their happy hour prices are. Niche is a tucked away little spot so I've only been a few times, but I've enjoyed them. My first visit was during a Yelp Retox event where I got to sample some of their $5 martini's. They run on the sweet side, think Bitter End style, and there are a number of them to choose from. And while it's not my typical thing, I enjoy that they will set up the tent and tv screen on the patio for sporting events. I recently watched a Euro Cup game there and enjoyed myself. The server kept my Tom Collin's coming and I had a surprisingly good Thai Chicken salad that I would for sure order again. Perhaps I'll be back if they air some of the Olympics. read more

I have been to this place several times and the service is always mediocre at its best. We went inside to get a table and had to wait too long so we got a table at the patio. There were about 5 full tables outside, yet only 1 server to be seen for all the people outside. As well, it took more than an hour for us to get our food. When we paid, my friend was mistaken that he had paid extra for his bill so he asked for additional change. Instead of telling us politely that it was a mistake, the server laughed at us and walked away. So go there if you want to wait for a long time for your food and your server to make fun of you. read more

The Niche is in my building so when I first started working here I wanted to try it out. The service at that time was terrible and so was the food, so we never went back. Fast forward 3 years later, my office was hungry one day and it was raining out so we thought we'd try it again. Definitely was worth the try. The service was great, refills on drinks were quick, the staff was friendly. My usual order is the fish and chips, which are great, with an appetizer of coconut shrimp. The fish is nicely battered , not over done to burn-fection and it's not still running with batter inside. The fries are hand cut , a little too much salt for me, but may be fine for other people, I just dont cook with salt or salt my food. So not a good judge on what is too salty when it comes to food. The coconut shrimp appetizer is soooooo good, my mouth is watering thinking about it. The shrimp are huge, you get a nice portion to share and the homemade salsa for dipping is amazing, just the right amount of zing to the spices. I've never been part of the supper crowd so I dont know what service is like then, however, definitely if you are downtown near the Maritime Center, at lunch time, you need to take this place in for lunch. read more

Walked by Niche a bunch of times noticing the HUGE Happy Hour signage, however my luck I always walk by at the wrong time of day so at least I knew of the place! Good advertising! Me and a friend decided to venture over for lunch as she had went previously and raved about the food. I ordered the Chicken club and at first I was in heaven! The sandwich was awesome as were my accompanying sweet potato fries, however as I ate more (note I was still loving the food) I realized that having the bun toasted with possibly garlic butter? (lots of) made me feel unsettled after a while. The sweet potatoes were deliciousness however there was a lot of added salt to them that made them too salty after a while ALL THAT BEING SAID! I enjoyed the food and will DEFINITELY return, maybe just asking the bun to not be toasted with the butter? I cant say too much though really, as I cleaned my plate, because all in all, the food was delicious! Also to note, our server was great! Friendly, chatty and just had this great server personality. Niche has two personas. The laid-back lunchtime atmosphere caters to travellers at the Four Points and people who work in the office tower. The service is friendly, the food good enough. The prices are ... OK, maybe a touch steep for some things. In the evening, the lounge atmosphere is just not quite there. Improvisational jazz, a bit too loud, and not particularly descript food. I kind of hate this place. I came here with a group for a going away shindig. The name implies a high end, fine dining establishment with well thought out menu options. After one quick glance at the menu you see otherwise. I'll admit I wasn't expecting a menu comparable to Oasis Pub on Spring Garden. I ordered a cocktail and penne with no chicken. The cocktail was actually pretty good, I can't remember exactly what it was called but it had cherry brandy in it, sorry for the poor description but the cocktails aren't posted online. The server was also very good, and on the ball with things. The entree sucked. It was completely devoid of any flavour. I was just finishing a 12 hour shift and was starving, I wanted to complain to the waitress but it was so busy I was a bit impatient, and just ate it. It really was not good. It was a creamy pesto sauce with spinach, onions, and peppers. Boring. I expected the sauce to be tasty because like, come on, cream sauces and pesto rules, but nope, 100% flavourless. I ended up putting salt and pepper on it. I also got a "vanilla root beer" cocktail which I thought sounded like it could be good but it was lacklustre too. My bill came to $35 for a shitty entree and 2 drinks. Too much. read more

A restaurant in Halifax that has always made me wonder what it is. Live entertainment isn't a regular occurrence, but happy hour is. So it at times fills the role of a supper club. The interior has lively decor, but the recent addition of many flat screen televisions (playing sports) can be very distracting, and can change the feeling from an upbeat restaurant to a sports bar. That said, the noise levels are never a real issue and one can have great conversation with friends. As for food, based on yearly visits, I think Niche was and still is touch and go. Standard pub fare is great. Other food, such as their salads and pastas can be disappointing. For my last visit I ordered a prosciutto pasta with asparagus and wild mushrooms. The brandy demi cream sauce was as thick and nutty as peanut butter, and the wild mushrooms were standard button mushrooms. The house salad, had a bland vinaigrette and goat cheese that was salty and not very acidic. The burgers and the nachos at our table, however, were all quite good. As for service, the host was very good at dealing with the front of the restaurant and getting us a table, shooing away the jackasses who decided to cut in and take the table we were supposed to sit at. Our server seemed to be quite distracted as she forgot to get us cutlery and was not very pro-active in making sure we had room at our table to fit our dishes (we had a small table). As a side note, to make space at our table, we actually asked our busser for a smaller plate to transfer our large plate of nachos to, and he asked us why we couldn't use the appetizer plates we were eating off of. Yikes! In general, I think management needs to spend more time making sure that the service is spot on. read more

I've eaten here three times over the past number of years and I have not been impressed. Great decor, but far too loud to enjoy a nice meal there. They cater to a younger crowd with their happy hour specials which may be a good thing for guests of the Four Points by Sheraton to know. I went recently with a gift certificate and treated two relatives that were staying at the Sheraton. The meal tasted good - they both had the burgers. The next morning they both appeared to have food poisoning which put a bit of a damper to the start of their trip to Halifax and on our Valley wine tour. One of the guests that got sick after our last visit contacted the restaurant about her experience just as an FYI and received a reply that no one else reported any issues with the burgers so it couldn't have been that. That response spoke volumes to us. We will not be back. read more

I've always found the food and service at Niche 'hit or miss' but my latest experience was way worse than just a miss. I went to Niche for dinner with friends and it was a terrible experience. Not only was the service slow, the food took over an hour to come out of the kitchen (despite the fact the restaurant was only half full) and was TERRIBLE! I ordered the southern chicken burger with fries. The fries were soggy, not crispy, and the chicken burger was terrible. The bun was soggy, like falling apart soggy, and tasted like it had been dipped in garlic butter. I ended up taking the chicken off the bun to try to eat it, but the chicken wasn't very good either. Another friend ordered the "prix fixe" three course meal for $25. She ordered the Chicken Supreme Duxelle as her main course and it was not even editable. The chicken was so tough/broiled/reheated it was like leather (she could not chew it) and the scoop of mashed potatoes resembled a styrofoam ball (they were springy and conjeled). The dessert, cheesecake, was just as bad and tasted like cheap boxed cheesecake. Although the restaurant did comp her meal, waiting an hour and 15 mins just to have a meal so bad you can't eat it is not worth the wait! Also, a word from the wise, don't order their pizza. During this past week's DoorsOpenHalifax, the morning run around, combined with the sun's beating down ways brought our parched levels to high... so we wanted to find a watering hole close to the just finished tour of Government House. We had passed Niche on our way to, so we decided to stop in and have a seat on their patio. We ended up having to wait about 5 minutes for service as other tables around us received food and drinks first. A bit understaffed for a sunny Sunday afternoon. Once we did get served we had a drink and ordered a starter of garlic crusts. The drinks were delicious. I had a proper Tom Collins (which as surprising as it is to say, is rare these days) and it hit the spot. The garlic crusts was essentially a cheese pizza for about 8 bucks, was pretty good. It had crushed red pepper flakes in the cheese so it added a nice bit of heat to the pallet. The starter and drinks came to about 30 bucks for three people. Not too bad, but with the service, it was a little much. May venture back at night to see how they do with more staff. read more

Really like the atmosphere, feels like your outside, comfy couches with tons of TV's around the whole restaurant. Great menu of drinks! And great selection of appetizers. Pizza was great! I've gone to Niche probably 5-6 times since moving in on the next street over and every time has just been okay; until tonight. After waiting at least 30 minutes for a table at 5pm let me add, we waited another 20 to get waited on. Now i know that Niche is "always busy" but it was 5PM! The waitress assured us our food would be out in 30 minutes. Let's just say it took 1 hour and 15.. Oh and best part, I ordered the Greek salad which was a whopping $12.95 and was literally half a head of romaine lettuce and 3 olives. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed in a restaurant that is supposed to be one of the better one in Halifax... Let's just say, I won't be going back. read more

The place to go if you enjoy waiting an hour for a drink, multiple hours for food, and a "curated" menu of reduced options they've already sold out of (at 18:30). For a restaurant with a large capacity, their servers apparently have little or no idea of how to manage medium sized groups. The beer is great, if you enjoy Molson and mass market products. If you want any of Halifax's fine local brews, look elsewhere. Ambiance is mass-market fake trendy that seems popular but I have no idea why. Do not recommend. read more

My wife and I were staying at he four points and came here for supper. I had the lamb burger and seafood chowder and she had a pasta and lobster bisque. My meal was fantastic. The lamb was delicious and the chowder is among the best I've ever had. My wife enjoyed her meal and soup as well. The nachos are wicked an if you get there between 4 and 6:30 you get them for half price. The other apps that I've tried haven't been quite as impressive but I can't say that I've had enough of their food to review it based on that. First, before you go here, realize that this is the restaurant for Four Points Hotel, just with a different name. Our experience was not very good overall. Breakfast was very expensive and my wife had to send her pancakes back, as they were like cardboard. Clean cutlery was hard to get and the two young adults working here were more interesting in socializing with each other than helping the few customers in attendance. My suggestion is to look elsewhere, but it's your call. Poor service, untidy appearance and immature staff made for a not so good experience. read more

Was having a great time and great service until my friend went out for a smoke and wasn't allowed back in because the bouncer said the height was incorrect on his id. The bpuncer was extremely dude not only to my friend but the rest of the party, aswell az wait staff was then rude to the rest of the party and just very unpleasant overall. Wanted to take my son out for breakfast. It was fairly early and most places were not open yet.. We decided to go Niche as it was One of the few places that was open and I have heard good things about it. Service was good we were promptly seated and our orders taken and the food arrived hot. Their breakfast menu was pretty dull. I opted for two eggs for my son and some home fries and I got a metro breakfast which was basically the same with sausage. He got a white milk and I just had water. There is nothing especially wrong with the meal but it seem like no effort was made to make it any better than that to be. I second issue was the price. This was my first experience with niche since it first opened in 2004. I had not been back since then only because I found the food underwhelming based on the pricing. Unfortunately, this experience was way worse. My fiancé and I met my two sisters and their two friends at niche on New Years Day at 11:15am. The restaurant was probably about 40% full and most of these people were finishing up their meals. My fiancé and I were sat down at 11:20am, the rest of our party arrived by 11:30. Once they arrived we all had our drink orders taken and the menus dropped off. We sat with these menus, waiting for our drinks for about 30 minutes, by this time the restaurant was near empty. The first two (a club sandwich and a classic breakfast) of six meals were delivered by 12:35pm, we were told the other four (eggs Benedict & hash browns) were going to be just another minute. Ten minutes later our waitress returned to inform us that "for some reason" the other 4 orders had never been put through and that it would just take a minute for the cook to "whip them up". The final four meals finally appeared around 12:45pm - an hour and fifteen minutes after we had all arrived. Not only that, but the final four meals were cold. The English muffins had been lightly warmed (cold by the time we got them), the hollandaise sauce was cold and a grayish colour, the eggs were cold, the "hash browns" were french fries. Up to this point the restaurant had been mediocre at best, now I feel that it is overpriced, poorly staffed, poorly managed, and quite frankly, never the right choice. The only upside?? Their french fries were alright and waitress was decent enough to comp the four eggs Benedict, although the other two still had to pay. Needless to say, I never plan to return. read more

I do NOT recommend this location for lunch! I'm on course in the Maritime Centre and asked at the door if we could have an entree within 45 mins. We were told yes, so we sat down and ordered. An hour later, our food still hadn't arrived so we asked the server for the food to go and our bills. Ten minutes later, we finally got our food and took it back to our course to try and eat. I like Niche. It is not a place that I go for fine dining, it is a place to go for their amazing happy hour specials, and a place to go with my friends who like sports. However, on a recent visit Niche mixed up an order and provided a friend of mine with a regular pizza when she had ordered Gluten free. I know lots of people make gluten free as a choice and would not necessarily be affected if a slip up like this happened, but my friend is not one of those people. She ended up sick for almost the next week, missing significant amounts of work. I emailed Niche to let them know about this and received no reply or apology. Not okay Niche! read more

After working in the Maritime Centre for a while I decided to try Niche. I took my elevator ride down to Niche, and it was packed! It was happy hour from 4 to close! AWESOME! 4.00 dollar glasses of house wine, and the house wine was really good. I can't say anything for the food as I didn't eat. But the service was really good and the bar staff was really nice! While the drink deals are fairly good ($3.25 pints), and the food is okay (1/2 price apps)...one staff member really hurts this place. I've been going to Niche for a little over 5 years fairly regularly. I enjoy their patio situation in the summer. Mostly because inside is way too loud. (There's like 25 televisions with different things blaring the entire time. PSA: Do not bring people that don't like loud noises to this place) One thing I really dislike is if you make a reservation, you will probably be disappointed. I've probably made upwards of 15 maybe 20 reservations here and the majority have been forgotten about. Meaning they don't have a spot for us and need to "figure something out" while the whole group is standing there waiting. Even though we have a reservation AND called ahead the day before to confirm. What the heck. Anyway, back to the staff member. Every single time I have had the pleasure (sarcasm) of having him as a waiter, it was a terrible experience. He is very short with customers, gives off a weird judge-y vibe, is rude, and is far from prompt. Also! Bonus! If you don't tip him enough, he questions you about it. No joke. I generally tip at least 15%. However, if you make my experience awful, are slow to come to our table (it was honestly not busy for once), and are downright rude to us, I'm not giving you a big old tip! Take the smaller tip that you didn't even deserve! Also - In venting to friends about this, they have also had the same experiences with him! They knew exactly who I was talking about when I told them about it. Needless to say, the place I used to frequent (especially in the summer) is now somewhere I'll likely stay away from.
