Su Casa is the least clean of the three. I saw and reported three baby roaches (bathroom and kitchen); two bird feces on the front window and several on its windowsill (the window opens inward, so the outside of it can be cleaned); and an oven broiler covered in old dirt that made it unsuitable for food. That's not hygienic. The front door peephole is covered with an opaque substance that makes it impossible to see through it. That's unsafe. The neighbors are aggressive and loud when you walk by to get to the front door of Su Casa. I wish there were a different entrance to Su Casa. The neighbors are abusive. Su Casa doesn't have an elevator. However, some of the staff at the front desk might help you carry your heavy bags up all those stairs. That's nice. Those troublesome issues weren't dealbreakers, and since I was already there enjoying the great ocean view, I extended my stay with an offer of an extended-stay discount. That's nice. At checkout, the manager converted that extended-stay discount into the "for your troubles" discount. What's in a name?

I was a little hesitant because Santa Monica hotels are known to be expensive, and I preferred to keep our room under $300 per night before taxes and fees. The Shore Hotel offers a great package if you don't mind staying in a room without a beach view. We booked a room with two queen beds--Pool Terrace, if I remember correctly--using their Coastal Getaway rate. The package did not include in-and-out valet parking, daily bike rentals, or access to the gym, but it was perfect for us since we planned to spend most of our time outside the hotel. Our ground-floor room faced the swimming pool, but trees provided privacy by blocking the view into the room from the pool deck. We really liked the room, especially how easy it was to access the pool. It was only about a 60-second walk from our room to the pool entrance! Unfortunately, at around 1 a.m. on our first night, the toilet began having plumbing issues, and bubbles started gushing out of the bowl. About half an hour later, I contacted Manny at the front desk. Since the bubbles continued and an engineer was not on-site, Manny eventually had to move us to another room. It was not fun waking up the kids at 2 a.m. after a long day of driving, especially since they had already settled into the spacious room--and we all loved that room! There was enough space to lay out all four of our carry-on suitcases. However, Manny acted very quickly. He asked Chris and another staff member--sorry, I forgot his name!--to prepare our new room and help move our luggage while my husband and I hurriedly repacked everything we had just unpacked. By 2:30 a.m., we were in our new room. At first, my kids thought we had been downgraded because we went from two queen beds to one king bed, and the room seemed slightly smaller. However, Manny arranged for a rollaway bed--and the room itself turned out to be a major upgrade! He moved us to a third-floor room with a balcony directly facing the beach. The new room was an accessible room, so the bathroom had additional grab bars. That worked perfectly for us because the bars were great for hanging our wet swimsuits to dry! Our original room only had a large rainfall showerhead, while the accessible room also had a handheld showerhead. That was especially convenient since we were traveling with young children. Overall, I really appreciated how well Manny handled our situation! I almost want to gatekeep the Pool Terrace room because it offers such great value. I was initially concerned about noise because I was told that the pool stayed open until midnight on Saturday. However, I can attest that the glass doors do an excellent job of blocking outside noise. My husband and kids had no trouble falling asleep before the plumbing issue began. Honestly, I think the Pool Terrace room would be my go-to choice for our next visit because my kids really enjoyed spending time at the pool. The pool is not very large, but it is more than adequate for cooling off on a hot summer day. We were also fortunate that none of the children using the pool were overly rowdy. Everyone behaved well while still having fun. The hotel offers cabanas for rent, but we had no trouble finding chairs on weekdays or later in the evening on the weekend. We did not get the room with view we asked for. The first room we got was not handicapped accessible which we asked for 2 months ago. It was on 1st floor and there is no elevator to 1st floor so you have to carry your luggage up the stairs. So back to front desk and we was given another room without a view but they were very fast to try get us to upgrade rooms to suite. Heck I didn't get the room I paid for let alone upgrade my room. The good part the rooms was nice and big. But understand the rooms have a mixtureof upgrades and hints of history from the days of old. The bed was super nice we slept well. The court yard is super nice with lots of seating. Towels provided poolside. The hot tub was super nice. Only down here is someone needs to skim pool and hot tub daily. The pool area is illuminated with a fire pit at night (really cool). The outside bar never opened the 4 days we were here. I went upstairs to pH bar and it was never opened either. The one stop coffee shop is nice with lots of choices for coffee and breakfast things. This is not included with your room so prepare to pay beach prices for coffee and food. Sad thing is we stayed several days and not a free coffee or anyone looking out for us. We had some strange things be it haunted or something else. We stayed 4 days and 3 night. Two of the three nights the fire alarm went off at 3am. The third night sounded like a loud speaker in court room. Sylvester served us a gorgeous breakfast every morning, and made sure we were off with bottled water every time we would leave. His demeanor in the morning was truly a great start to every day, and the breakfast was always fresh and HUUUGE portions! The parking is a bit of a pinch when it's full, as you end up somewhat squished between cars or in someone's way, but it was gated, which was lovely. The Secret Garden is situated right off the Sunset Strip, and very little legwork is needed to get to the heart of West Hollywood. For those who are more ambitious, you can walk into the hills, although it's a pretty steep walk. There are two gorgeous cats who walk around and will come and keep you company in your room, if you wish. :)
