This is a very popular, hipster-ish cafe that has a long wait on the weekends. We came back on a week-day and it was just a short wait. The menu is great, with lots of interesting options. I had the OVOS NICOLAU (AVOCADO TOAST W/ POACHED EGG & CHILLI FLAKES) and my husband had the CHEESE & HAM CROISSANT. The food was good and had good seasoning, but the service was awful. I could see my plate sitting on the pass for about 10 minutes before it was finally brought over, so of course it was cold when it arrived and the eggs had solidified too much. The food here was very good! We arrived on a Tuesday at 11:30 and the place was packed. We waited about 15 min for a table outside and it took the servers a while to get to us. Things get confusing because people just sit down without waiting and have to be told to get up and wait in line (even though there is a sign). There aren't too many american-ish breakfast places so I was happen to find one. I got the pancake with nutella and it was SO good. It was huge and cooked perfectly. Nicolau cafe is an excellent breakfast and lunch spot. The atmosphere is very welcoming whether you want a quick bite or are planning to get some work done. Their upstairs area is great to get work done, even though you cannot use laptops or other study materials during lunch time or the weekends downstairs. The coffees and smoothies were fantastic. Did you know it takes 45 minutes to make a bowl of yogurt? The wait wouldn't have been as painful if the music wasn't a bat mitzvah playlist from the early 2000s. We also ordered the pancake (singular) with fruit and syrup which arrived cold and without syrup. Again, the experience could have been remedied. But upon asking for syrup, we were met with indignation and another 10 minute wait. Even with the syrup, the pancake was still drier than the cracked stucco on the sides of the houses in Alfama. We left bitterly disappointed, as bitter as the thick sludge left at the bottom of our amateur cappuccinos. The staff were honestly quite disorganized and you might have a hard time finding the hostess to get your name on the waiting list. The servers were all neglectful and had to be reminded just to give us water as well as not accommodating us when it was too hot to sit outside. They basically laughed it off and we sat, burning as we ate our food quickly just to escape the sun.
