I've been hitting up a lot of coffee shops lately and needed a change of scenery. Glad to have stumbled upon Nighthawk on Yelp. I came midday on a Tuesday and was pleased to see how serene it was. There were a couple of commuters/locals who would come in to get a coffee but other than that it was pretty chill. I had one of their signature cocktails and it was good. Definitely the best pick-me-up. I found out through the bartender (who was super nice) that you can bring your own food! Overall I loved the vibe, the music playing on their speakers, and the drinks. This place is pretty small but the bartenders are friendly and the drinks aren't going to empty your wallet. The atmosphere is nice and casual. Only been a few times but it's never extremely loud, and I've found it pretty easy to get a seat. It's literally RIGHT across from the kimball brownline stop so it's pretty easy to get to. The parking sitch might be tricky but why drive to a bar when you could take the train? It's a coffee shop in the day time but unfortunately I've never been. Update, I won't be supporting this bar anymore, nor will my condo building. You can't gofund for mistakes, and expect everything to be ok. Maybe free drinks for a long time to make up for what people paid you? First thing I noticed after their financial hardship, was a brand new sigh inside. I am guessing this money didn't just go towards taxes. Usually service is decent depending on who you get. The owners tho as someone mentioned do gossip a bit about patrons. It does have a sewer smell inside (that neither Nighthawk nor Hotdog Station) will admit to being the fault of. Just annoying bar, that could be great if ran differently. read more

This is a great place to have fun. For me, it serves the best cocktail. You can order coffee too for non-alcoholics. Although there are also delicious drinks and food to choose from. The prices are very affordable too. It has a positive vibe that can help us relax and be out of worries of life for once. Nighthawk you almost had it. See this is a nice cocktail bar with well-crafted drinks (The Violet Hour is on consult) in a neighborhood (Albany Park) that does not have these type of places. Nighthawk has a chance to be a major player in the game but something is still holding them back. If you saw my last review for them some 6 months ago or so I had a few suggestions for them to reduce the clutter and boxes. They seemed to have done that. Paired with fine drinks they were on their way to a 4 star review. Then the bomb dropped. Let me bust it: As I was perusing the menu I noticed a Rum Old Fashioned, yum sounds tasty! Below was a description noting it was made with Jamaican Pot Still Rum. So I asked Bartender if it was made with Hamiltons. Bartender states the Rum Old Fashioned is made with three different rums. Oh great! However Bartender quickly points out that they (Bartender) don't know what they are. It was almost like Bartender was annoyed by my question. Almost had it! I don't know. Are my expectations too high in expecting the bartender to know what specific liquors are used in what are very tasty libations. I suppose Bartender did their job by getting the drink into my glass and collecting my money, only $8 by the way; however I like to know that my bartender is a student of the game, a fricken ninja, and not just there to make a couple extra bucks. I'm not saying this is the case with all their bartenders just this one. You almost had it! I am so thirsty to give Nighthawk a quality 4 star ratinh, and for all intents and purposes are there but it's little stuff like this that holds me back. Nonetheless they make good drinks and have yet to hit their prime. The best has yet to come. I hear a new cocktail menu is coming out soon that just might be a bit more adventurous than the first. The bartenders are the bomb diggity. The drinks are delicious and it is fun that they have their rotating menu depending on the season. You walk in and are treated like a regular, which I have not found in many bars in Chicago. I love the environment, the people, and the occasional dog that meanders in. Come for a drink, stay for the pickleback shots. Then pass one over to me!! The best nights to go are when people don't go. That's my life motto. This place is wonderful. We stopped in today for a few drinks. They have a great well executed cocktail menu. The place looks awesome. They kept the vintage ceiling and the exposed brick and perfectly Incorporated high end elements that give the place a unique character. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly. We met the owners and they were very cool. The bartender was excellent and obviously cares about delivering a perfectly crafted cocktail. It's a level of quality that we need in Albany Park. It is a cozy little place that offers both adult drinks as well as drinks free from alcohol. I went there with my husband and kids. We all had something to enjoy our company with. One thing stops me from giving 5 stars is the door needing some work to keep it closed. We sat in the booth that is the closest to the door and I felt a little cold. It's not a BAD place, both coffee and alcoholic drinks are good, but changes based on who's working the bar. TBH: I haven't spent a lot of time here during coffee times, so this is based on bar-hours. It seems the only bartender who cares about the environment of the space as a neighborhood bar is Chris (pretty sure that's his name). If you go when someone else is working it's apt to be your basic sports bar (loud football audio or generic music) but with hip drinks. I keep trying to give it a chance, but twice now I've left without being served or even *acknowledged* by the bartender on nights that were not even that busy (we'd been able to get seats, easily, at the bar). I agree with the other commenter, Nick, about the weird aesthetic: LED panels that are really out of place, the wannabe sportsbar/hip place (you can't be both), the audio is often too loud. Wow, this place is my mother fucking jam, and I cannot understand why it took me so long to try it. I am sitting in a booth, under which an electrical outlet is conveniently located. I'm using their superfast wifi, and I am drinking a cappuccino. MSNBC's election coverage is on the tv behind the bar with the volume off but the closed captioning on. The music is upbeat and not too loud. I opened a TAB, like holy shit, I love this. I am listening to the faint chatter of three other customers who are having a mid-election-day beer or two, no doubt to deal with the anxiety. Do not be put off by the combination of café with bar. If you want a cafe to work in the daytime, this is your spot. It might be the best café in the neighborhood, with Café Urbano coming in a close second (they have food but no booths). And, if you want a beer or several beers after work, this is also your spot. The folks with laptops will be long gone. read more

So, I tried this place and, sure, I get it. Albany Park & cocktails. Do cocktails have to get worse the closer they get to the suburbs? Is Violet Hour advising them to do a coffee bitters Manhattan? As an Albany Park resident, I love that this place exists. There's not much else like it in the neighborhood. It's chill and open late. The variety of beer is solid, and the mixed drinks are pretty good. The caramel latte I had didn't have much flavor to it, but I'm not much of a coffee connoisseur, so feel free to disregard. That said, the aesthetic of the place is...well, it's something. They have these big LED panels on the wall opposite the bar. Sometimes they show music videos and sometimes they show fish swimming in a tank, but I'm not sure what they add that's better than it would've been had they left the original brick in place. Overall, the fixtures and woodwork are well done. There are plenty of places to sit without having the place seem too spacious. It feels like a neighborhood bar with a sense of place and togetherness. read more

I love love love this bar!! I have been here a few times and the drinks are unique and delicious. The cocktail menu is seasonal so it's kinda cool that the change it up. I've had the raspberry beret and the Shirley temple of doom. Unfortunately these were the spring cocktails and not currently available but they were so delicious I had to come back several times before they changed menus. I was excitedly anticipating the current menu so i was very excited when they announced the summer menu recently. So far I have tried the Mr Pink and the Pablo Picasso. I'm looking forward to trying the other new selections. They are located across from the kimball brown line so they are open in the morning and they also sell coffee and pastries. They have interesting activity like movies nights, drunk paint along with Bob Ross, and once a month they have a pop up restaurant which I've been wanting the try. Nighthawk is a great hangout place, coffee shop by date and bar by night! I enjoyed the chill environment and strong cocktails. Although it's right by the Kimball Brown Line, there's not much around Albany Park that would make it a destination. Perhaps for this reason, it's mostly neighborhood customers enjoying quiet conversation. The dim warm lighting in the evening is relaxing and makes it great for date nights.
