I received a loan approval from Nikkei Credit Union (NCU) right after I applied auto loan through a car dealer. I went for shopping and dinner after I left from the car dealer, so I didn't notice that I had received the approval. I replied back to NCU next morning and could set a meeting with Kaori-san from NCU in that morning. She provided all documents in a short time to get ready for my meeting by the time I visited NCU. She was polite, gave me a warm welcome, and explained every single detailed for the documents. Process was so smooth, and I could sign-off all documents by noon. My name is David Iwai, a 25 years long Nikkei Credit Union customer. This claim is prepared for the managers of Nikkei Credit Union in regard with unprecedently poor and unfair treatment I received today from one your employees, her name is Kaua. Earlier this week, Costco Torrance refused my 100 dollars bill for the shopping I made. Costco found that the bill was fake. This was one of 100 dollars bill I pulled out of my Savings Account at Nikkei Credit Union. I went to Nikkei office this morning, and met Kaua, to replace with real 100 dollars bill. She examined the fake bill with her naked eyes, and said "I don't believe this is a faked bill". I asked her to inspect it on a scanning instrument. She denied my request because they are not equipped with the scanners. I asked again that all I needed was to replace the fake bill, which Nikkei gave me. She flatly refused my request. I had to insist because I did not wish to use it with knowing the bill was fake. She walked back to one of office rooms to discuss with someone behind the wall. She came back and told me "I cannot replace this with another bill, because it is illegal for us to do so". Thru her facial reactions, it was obvious to me, that she utterly doubted me that I was a con. When I heard her response with icy cold demeaner with slimy eyes, I was so upset and lost my temper. I raised my voice, and told her to exchange the fake bill immediately with right one, without adding further negative responses. My attitude toward her with 25 years long client background seemingly overwhelmed her. She quickly replaced it without asking my identification. After I got a real bill, I asked her one more thing. I told her that I needed to withdraw 1000 dollars from savings account. She made a fatal mistake, again. She did not ask me to show my identification. I also have accounts on both USbank and Chase, but they never neglected to ask personal identification on any transactions. Because of the happening, I am now seriously thinking to close all my Nikkei accounts. If I stayed there, some cons might get free money out of my account. I hope that someone responsible in customer service will call me soon, and explain the bank operations. read more

Does anyone even work here? I've tried calling over 10 times during the last week and no one answers the phone. What kind of bank is this place? What a joke.. I'll be closing my account as soon as I get a hold of someone.. To your response Fred- Don't use the 3 day holiday as an excuse. Did you not notice my review? It says "the last week" meaning it's been more than just a few days and I haven't reached a single member services worker... obviously no one is able to answer the phone due to you business's poor infrastructure. I've never had any issues reaching other credit unions over the phone.. why should I trust my money at your bank when no one can even simply answer the phone. Also noticed other customers are not able to get a hold anyone with the phone either. Months of reviews with phone troubles here. read more

I went to Nikkei Credit Union to use their ATM. When I got home, I realized my wallet was missing. I figured I had dropped in my car. A Nikkei Credit Union employee found my wallet and managed to find me to confirm it was mine. I went back to their offices as instructed and brought additional identification. It is beautifully located near the freeway, and is accessible through stairs and elevator. The manager greeted me in the most friendliest manner while maintaining a 6 feet distance/face mask protocol. I am extremely thankful they went above and beyond for someone who was not part of their credit union. From my experience, they genuinely care about their community and anyone who uses their services, even if its the ATM. read more

I've been a member of this credit union for over 15 years and have appreciated this small bank that seems very family oriented. They were initially a bit slow in transitioning to online services, however seem to making good gains now. I'm pretty old school when it comes to making deposits though and prefer to go into the bank or for loans. The staff are always friendly and helpful. They have a couple events for their customers during the year that I've only in the last few years have been able to attend since moving back to the area. They are very family oriented which I like and a customer is more of an individual vs. a number compared to the larger bank institutions. read more

I reached out online to inquire about an auto loan after discussing with a few friends that I know who bank with Nikkei. They all said the same thing that they were a smaller credit union (family like) and have good rates on loans. After my application online, Kaori got back to me quickly and was able to help get me pre-approval with a competitive rate/ amount. I loved that I was able to communicate via email and she helped me get organized so my actual visit to the branch was seamless. I think I was only there for about 25mins, which could've actually been shorter but I had lots of questions since this was my first auto loan. Everthing you hate about big commercial banks is missing from here. From the moment you walk in you are greeted by a friendly helpful staff. Out of the few credit unions I've had membership, they are by far the best. When one talks about personal service, Nikkei is the apex. The few problems that I've had, they made me feel like they really wanted it resolved. I truly feel like they are working for me and my financial health is in good hands. As in all credit unions here, you have the convenience of using any credit union ATM, 7-Eleven ATM, and theirs (that's a lot!). Plus you get free checks and the prettiest debit card with a Japanese pattern! Should you go and the tellers are full, you can watch TV (often Food Network) or read the latest issue of Rafu Shimpo. When it comes to shared banking, the Nikkei Credit Union appears to be taking, without offering anything in return. My account is with a different credit union participating in the Co-Op program, and because their nearest location is 2,000 miles away, I wanted something closer that offered Co-Op shared banking services for in-person transactions. The Co-Op search website had the Nikkei Credit Union listed as offering shared branching. But when I dropped in, I was told by the rather dismissive teller that they don't do shared banking. I go home and check the search results again less than an hour later -- Nikkei Credit Union was now conspicuously missing. I can only assume that the manager that the teller spoke with sneakily made the change after I raised the issue without acknowledging it directly to me. And yet, their website still has the "Co-Op Shared Branch" logo, and they advertise the fact that their members can use other shared branches at other credit unions to do their transactions. So why don't they offer the same to members of other credit unions? Thankfully the Western Federal Credit Union in Torrance a little south of the Nikkei Credit Union offers shared banking services and their tellers are welcoming towards such non-members. read more

very poor customer support to pay my bill and rules to pay are a mockery of the customer . example : they didn't receive one months payment so to catch up I paid for two months so I can be caught up. Well they told me I was still late because they can only take one payment per day ?? they kept the two payments but did not bring my account current ?? they said I have to wait 24 hours before I can make a second payment toward my delinquent account. The rules here at Nikkei are very predatory to make you pay more or stumble on their rules to accrue late charges. after all that they magically found my payment and charged me again so I called to get that Money returned to my other bank account and told me it was already payed toward my loan and can't have the Monet returned . read more

My experience with Nikkei Credit Union was solely to get an auto loan. They were super friendly, easy, and made the process really easy! I started my initial correspondence with them 5 days ago. They guided me in the right direction and let me speak to the right people on the phone. The next day I sent them the info they needed via email. They followed up with me the following day to confirm what I would qualify for and that we are just awaiting final approval. 2 days later (today), I went into their branch, signed the documents and was out in less than 30 minutes with a check to buy my used car. I communicated with Kaori since day 1 and she has been fantastic! Super helpful, kind, and answered all my questions! Thanks Kaori! I might be going back soon to set up a Roth IRA account with Jamie! They ignore my request which I submitted by mail, they don't bother to call me back, they don't respond to my messages through the message center in their online system. I have been with countless banks in my lifetime and was sick of the automated and/or impersonal interaction with the big banks. As I learned what credit unions stood for and how it gives each account holders a sense of ownership made sense to entrust my money with. Nikkei CU has been very thorough when I had fraudulent charges, when I had questions, and needed follow ups (even though I am a small account holder). One of the representatives, Jamie Valenzuela, has been my go-to person and she has been fabulous as others have been. I hope more people can see the benefit and the sense in switching their bank to Nikkei CU. read more

Sadly, I had to update my review to reflect the decline in service that Nikkei has provided. They have now imposed a charge for upgraded (identity protection, etc)checking accounts, with no ways to avoid the fee other than to return to a basic no-frill checking account. After changes in staff and upper level leadership, it's become clear that Nikkei is no longer for me. The branch manager is excellent, but the majority of the tellers are horrid. Beware, they may seem like a decent institution at first, but they're too small. Nikkei cannot provide the level of service it's slightly larger counterparts are capable of. I've been banking with Nikkei Credit Union and would never leave. Their personal attention is what has me more than satisfied, and with a few bad experiences with some big banks who shall go un-named, I decided a while ago to move all of my money to Nikkei, and honestly, with all of the shenanigans the big banks have pulled I know I made the right choice. Do they make mistakes? Of course, everyone does, but the difference is their customer service, because they've always strived to make me whole. That's something a big bank has never given me. Plus, Nikkei doesn't nickel and dime me to death just so they can funnel all of the surcharge money from their depositors and borrowers up to the few in upper management. If you want impersonal, out for themselves banking, go with one of the big banks, but if you want a fair shake and personal attention to customer service, go with Nikkei. read more
