Menu selection includes a wide variety of choices.Kinda hard to decide what to order. Not exactly a place to dine in since seating is limited to only three booths. I ran into a lady during my visit that had been coming to this place since she was seven. Locals seem to love this place! Nim Chan's in San Pedro is a restaurant I'd rather order takeout for, not dine in. The food is actually decent, but the ambiance could definitely use some work. The dining area is very bland and the chairs stiff and probably built before I was born. There is one TV running, using on a local feed with "bunny ears." When I was eating lunch, there were a few flies buzzing around, which was a bit annoying. The price is good, not geat, and I felt you didn't get as much for it's money's worth. If I was hungry and in need of some Chinese with no better option available, I'd order takeout from here. read more

My friend was pretty excited about this place, but I was disappointed. She usually gets the kung pao tofu, and so we ordered it; it was ok, but not great. I don't think it was made with firm tofu, the chunks looked...soggy, somehow. Like they were slumping. There was enough spice for me, but I'm a lightweight, and I also carefully avoided the slivers of green chilis. They had included some hot sauce for higher heat if desired. The veggie lo mein was extremely bland, and at least half composed of celery and sprouts, which both of us left in piles on the sides of our plates. More noodles! I didn't order steamed salad. The restaurant itself is essentially made for take-out, which I don't have an opinion on one way or the other. There's a counter and two or three booths with hard benches. If you wanted to eat in for an extremely fast lunch, it would be one thing, but if you want to take a date out for Chinese, I suggest you choose elsewhere. The food is very inexpensive, so even though I wasn't impressed, I'd be willing to give more tofu a chance? read more

What happened to Nim Chan? I just had the worst Chinese takeout food I ever had. I have not been there in a while and am not sure if the owners have changed, but the Hot & Sour Soup I got tasted like it had a half a cup of sugar poured into it--it was literally inedible. The combination fried rice had approximately THREE MICROSCOPIC SHRIMP (seriously--about a ¼")! There was hardly any meat in this rice. AND it had NO FLAVOR! This place has been good in the past and has good reviews (If you trust ylep reviews), so maybe today was an off day. If I go back, I am going to TASTE EVERYTHING before I leave! read more

I've gone to Nim Chans for decades as my go-to Chinese takeout and have never been more disappointed. The pride in their food that I believed they had didn't exist in my last order, in fact it appeared to be a reheated or twice-cooked meal. The egg rolls were hard and the chow mein was mushy. Incredibly delicious!! For years we missed out. Everything is fresh, made to order and prepared with such care. He even waited until we walked in to sauce the lemon chicken so it would stay crispy. He greets you with a smile and is so attentive. He was happy to customize my order and leave out what I didn't like. The Mongolian beef was excellent, lemon chicken was crispy light and delicious. The steamed Shumai were outstanding and reminded me of the ones made by my friend's grandmother that I was addicted to. Grandma passed some years ago and I have longed for her Shumai but others only disappointed until today!! read more

I live across the street on the Air Force base and I can tell you the food is good and fresh. I wish I knew what they put in their egg rolls. They are delicious! I have searched long and hard for a Shrimp Egg Foo Young like the one I knew from my college years. It has a light brown gravy with a thickness too it and the patties are not greasy. I hit every section of Los Angeles trying to find the right one -downtown, Inglewood, Koreatown, Culver City...everywhere. I had just about given up until I found this gem. Very small, family-run spot in bad need of a new sign that you will probably miss the first few times that you drive by. But oh!!!! what a taste. Spoke with the owner, he has been there for over 35 years and takes great pride in his cooking (which does take a little longer than normal so call ahead). He proudly says "every order comes with two soy sauce," and you can just feel the history and passion that he has for his work. Love, love, love this spot. Leave a tip! read more

Just spent $26.00 for old, stale food. Appetizers: ribs were oily and hard, chicken was dry and tasteless, shrimp batter was not cooked and no sauce for the shrimp and the beef skewer with pepper-I would not feed this to my dog. Egg flower soup: does not taste good, something is wrong and it is watery. War wanton soup: again, does not taste right and is watery. Yang chow rice: shrimp is not deveined and you can see a nice black stripe of shi*. Rice is also overcooked with an almost burnt taste. I normally order from a different chinese food spot, but I decided to give this place a try beause it was next to my nail salon. I am really disappointed in this choice. The food is not as advertised! I thought I would give it a try because of the lunch special, but it was short from special. I ordered Kung Pao Chicken with Lo Mein and I didn't finish it. SO sad about the 7$ I spent here. The Lo mein tasted almost wet still from them blanching it in water and putting it straight into a pan. The kung pao was NOT kung pao. It was not spicy and the flavor was not the same. Neither of these dishes had any flavor to it. read more

Giving the benefit of the doubt to previous positive reviewers, and the convenience of a short drive (this Chinese food place is the closest to my apartment), I tried Nim Chan's Kitchen. I have to apologize to the people who gave this one star. I wronged them in my thoughts by considering the possibility that they held standards too lofty. I now know they were just being honest. I love finding quaint places that can match or beat chain restaurants for quality and/or ambiance. But this place just sucks. Nim Chan's Kitchen reminded of when Eddie Murphy described how, when he was a young boy, his mom once assured him she could make him a hamburger better than McDonald's. And though he had his doubts, he looked forward to the final product. His description of his mother's ad hoc home-cooked burger's utter failure to match the tried-and-true McDonald's formula is analogous of Nim Chan's cooking and that of any decent Chinese take-out joint. Yes, I realize McDonald's represents quality in this analogy. That is the extent to which this place sucks. read more
