If you've ever had popcorn chicken from a good boba shop, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. Came here for some Taiwanese snack food. I was not disappointed. The best were the popcorn chicken and salt and pepper pork chops. The popcorn chicken was perfectly crispy and salty. We asked for not spicy and there was only a hint of white pepper. The only negative was the presentation. It is served in a large paper cone. That's fine if you're eating and walking with it. But at a table, the cone was so tall that you have to stand up to see the chicken inside. And you have to rotate the cone if you're sharing since one side of the cone is taller than the other. The stinky tofu was serviceable but it could have been stinkier. The beef noodle soup was okay. The beef was very tender and the soup was good. But it's not as flavorful as the ones at Sue's Kitchen up the street. The only miss for me was the Dan Dan noodles. I was warned it was spicy but it was a bit spicier than I anticipated. That's ok but the sauce had a weird sour taste to it that was kind of off putting. The service is very attentive. I wish they served boba drinks. Overall we will definitely be back. I can't wait until they open their new branch up in Palos Verdes later this year. read more

A charming local restaurant with Taiwanese and Chinese food, ran by stand-up people. Their weekday lunch specials range from $15-$18, depending on the featured protein selected. Most restaurants with similar specials have the tendency to stack up on rice and skimp out on the meat, not here. Additionally, the $10 braised pork bowl is wonderful. The pork hits the mark on the tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture. I do wish for a little more pork and pickled radish to match the rice's portion - but would 100% order this again cause it's THAT GOOD. I enjoyed the popcorn chicken combo. Crunchy, well-seasoned chicken, with more meat included instead of batter. The plate also had a heaping scoop of white rice and broccoli. Was really craving simple Taiwanese food after work, so I stopped by here. I ordered the egg & shrimp and a side of green beans. The egg & shrimp was way too oily, I ended up having to drain a good amount of grease off before eating it. Not ideal. The green beans, though, were solid. Really good flavor and cooked well. I skipped the rice, and with just those two dishes it came out to about $40 before tip. On the bright side, I had enough leftovers for two more meals, so it kind of balances out. If you come here, definitely ask for less oil...the default is pretty heavy. read more

This is a small restaurant with a very helpful and attentive staff. There were not very many patrons at the time of our visit, but the timing of their service was perfect. We ordered the Canaan fish special, orange chicken, shrimp and chicken dumplings, honey walnut shrimp, and assorted chow mein. The Canaan fish special was my favorite of the entrees. It was perfectly savory with the most subtle crunch and very flavorful. The chicken and shrimp dumplings and the orange chicken need a bit more pizzazz to the flavor, but they were cooked well. The honey walnut shrimp was also delicious but a bit more saucy than I'm used to, but I would definitely order it again. The assorted chow mein was my second favorite dish although I do wish the portion of the chow mein was a bit bigger because my family and I inhaled that pretty quickly. Only a small portion of the menu has Taiwanese food, the other half is just regular Chinese food items like Brocoli beef and orange chicken, etc. When I crave for Stinky fried tofu, I get my cravings here without going to SGV or Cerritos. You could taste the stinky but fortunate for those around me, they don't stink that bad, lol! They have braised pork rice bowls but it's small portion of braised pork and a whole lot of rice, and no egg. Flavor is good but I like the ones at Tea Station better. Wish the serving size was bigger and broth a bit more stewed for flavor. Not all places have Taiwanese basil popcorn chicken. This was the best of what we ordered here. Very few places have stinky tofu. I love it when you can smell the fermentation a block away. Alas, this isn't the smell neighborhoods or some other patrons like. You just can't get stinky tofu like you can in Taiwan. So, here, the stinky level was low. If you put your face in it, you kind of get a whiff. Fried tofu is still something I thoroughly enjoy. The food: Recommended- Canaan Special Fish Fillet - battered and nicely fried, finished off with a sweet glaze Braised Egg Tofu w Minced Pork Hot Pot - I love egg tofu - it's an eggy silken tofu that comes in a tube. In this dish, they lightly coat with starch and deep fry. Then it braises in a soy sauce based liquid. This dish was so saucy, definitely get it with some rice. Eggplant with Basil - fantastic version of this eggplant dish, with large pieces of tender but not mushy eggplant String Bean with Ground Pork Ok dishes: Assorted fried rice Dan Dan Noodle - thought the flavor was good, a ton of ground peanut, a bit liquidy, which threw me off Pork & Vegetables Wonton Noodle Soup Shrimp & Pork Sui Mai Green Onion Pancake Fried Stinky Tofu - this one is interesting because it's hard to find on menus. The server was very friendly, and we got seated right away. After browsing through the menu, we decided to order the following dishes: Fried Stinky Tofu: the ultimate sensory battle between smell and taste. It is amazing how the nice texture and taste of fried tofu can defy the pungency of their smell. The sauce was flavorful without being too salty or overpowering. The slightly sweet preserved cabbage went well with the dish. Beef Soup Noodle: the beef was soft and tender, and the broth was flavorful and not oily. The noodle texture was nice an on the al dente side. Popcorn Chicken: The food portion was generous, and the chicken nuggets were not overly fried. The meat was tender and crust was well seasoned and slightly on the spicy side. Shrimp and Chicken Dumplings: one of the best dumpling wraps I have ever tasted. Good texture and not overly firm. We stopped by Canaan Café for dinner on a Friday night with our toddler daughter. Two things I want to point out that we're missing from the reviews in Yelp that I was searching for before we went. One is they have boosters and high chairs for children and they even give the children a little children plate too. They do have alcohol, three beers on the menu to choose from. We ordered dumplings, shrimp, Dan Dan noodles and orange chicken. Everything came out timely and was overall pretty tasty. The orange chicken was the only item we didn't love due to it having a little too much of a bland chicken taste. After always driving by this place we finally gave it a go. When we arrived it was a packed house, we decided to order to go and we ordered the Beef broccoli, the Assorted Chow Mein as well as their Shrimp and vegetable wonton soup. Their food is simply delicious, I feel other places are greasy and the usual flavor but the flavors were different in a unique way. Their beef broccoli was delicious and the ratio to broccoli & beef were the same and very well served. Their soup was delicious and hit the spot for a chilly night. One thing I will def do for next time is order ahead of time that way I don't wait so long for the food.
