I checked out the used inventory at large Subaru dealerships in NH, MA and CT and found that they didn't know anything about the cars, charged outrageous processing fees ($800-$900) and offered no warranty! The used Subarus I found through private sellers were just as much of a hassle. I took 3 cars to independent mechanics to have pre-purchase inspections done. Every one of them found about $2K worth of work that would need to be done immediately. The last thing I wanted to do was buy a car and have to invest money into it right away. When I was in CT visiting family, I stumbled upon East Granby Motors' website and rushed over the next day. Not only did they have exactly what I was looking for (within my budget), but they also had a number of alternatives. It turns out I bought the first car I test drove. For the price of the car, Mike and his team changed the head gaskets, timing belt and water pump and did a complete overhaul of anything else that needed attention at no extra cost. He also took care to add anything he could to the car to make it more comfortable and appealing. On top of that, the car came with a 6 month bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 1 year warranty on the engine (seriously!). Finally, he worked with my (out-of-state) insurance agent to transfer my plates and insurance! After months of stress and frustration, Mike made my car buying experience truly positive. I saw no reason not to give Alex a chance, so I scheduled a brake job and oil change with him. I dropped my car off the night before and dropped the key in the mail slot, as usual. My car sat there the next day without moving. I called but got only an answering machine, so I stopped by at 4pm. The place was closed and locked. So I left the car thinking they got busy and he would do it tomorrow. The next day, same story. The car just sat there and when I stopped in, nobody was there. WTH?! So I got my spare key and took my car back. I asked at the business next door what was going on and found out the new owner got COVID and closed for a week. Was he sick in the hospital? No, just COVID positive. He feels fine. There were multiple other customers all in the same boat. Our keys locked up inside the building with nobody to give them back. At least one person even had their car locked up inside. Well, a full week went by and finally I got a phone call from them. No, not from Alex the owner, but from the family friend helping him with the business. He was calling to apologize. No, sorry, you don't get to apologize your way out of this one. Especially when the owner is too much of a coward to do the apologizing himself. He could have called people to cancel their appointments, or even simply put a note on the door so people wouldn't drop their keys in the mail slot. But he did absolutely nothing. He just screwed over multiple customers without a single care. I will never set foot in that building again and I recommend you don't either.
