On a first casual visit to Sushi Table I knew it was a standout spot in SLO. But the Omakase experience I had on my second visit cemented this place as one of my standout sushi experiences anywhere. They've done an incredible job making the space special. It makes a busy open space intimate. If you want to sit at the sushi bar make reservations or roll the dice. There is nothing quite like watching a chef dedicate their entire service to you. That's the Omakase experience we had. The restaurant was busy, but the team running the show outside our service was a well-oiled machine, and I could tell other diners were enjoying their meals. But what we experienced was on another level. Course after course was assembled in front of us. I love to cook, so watching and engaging was really special. Learned about every fish, salt, oil, cut. Just spectacular. They were also very kind. A few folks celebrating birthdays, including myself, and they doted on us in a major way. Truly memorable. read more

What's the old saying... First time, shame on you, second time, shame on me? I've tried this spot twice now and both times have been a major disappointment . First time, build your own sushi rolls... Kinda weird and I spent $30 to have to buy dinner somewhere else shortly after... Second time, ordered the chicken yakisoba and a blue crab roll (California roll with real crab).. Yakisoba was $20 and literally looked like a kids sized meal.. good thing I bought the blue crab roll for $15 that I had to squeeze out of a weird plastic roll... The sushi bar is tucked away behind a curtain out of sight when you walk into the food court building. I wasn't expecting much when I walked in, but I was pleasantly surprised. We love good quality Sushi and heard that this place was excellent. It did not disappoint. The fish was so fresh and the quality and variety beyond good! The owner Sonny was our sushi chef and prepared everything for us. The hand rolls were amazing. The seaweed wrap that they use was clean and fresh, not like other restaurants use. You can taste the difference. They have an extensive selection of Saki, more than I have ever seen at one Sushi Restaurant ever. We sampled many and they were delicious. Ehhh popular for their push up sushi but overall it's not good. Cool concept but it's almost more work than picking up a piece with chopsticks. Their smoke salmon onigiri is literally prepackaged lox bundled together in the middle. They could have at least shredded it to make it look like they made it from scratch haha. Get the crab meat onigiri instead, even that's a tad but better. Don't get the one in the ice chest, ask them to make them fresh so the rice isn't hard. read more

I was a little apprehensive when we first arrived at the SLO Market location, I had made a reservation but it appeared that there was an order-at-counter and take your meal to-go situation, BUT behind the curtain sits a nice long sushi bar! We were seated and given our menus, water, etc. They do not make sushi rolls, which surprised and disappointed me. I have a select few rolls that I get every sushi place I attend to compare. (*You can order rolls at the counter outside of the seating area in a push pop form and get it to-go. ) We ordered the 3 sushi taco special and yakitori and a poke bowl. I was blown away at how good they all tasted! Literally could taste the level of high quality fish and product in the meals. (including the seaweed wrapping, which was the freshest, most flavor-popping I have ever tasted!) Everything was fresh and flavorful. My tastebuds were dancing and wanted more! The 3 tacos were excellent! The blue crab looked simple and I thought maybe I should ask for a drizzle of special sweet sauce, but after my first bite, I wanted nothing more than to taste every bite as it was presented. It was excellent. The Salmon was the same, so refreshingly delicious and the Spicy Tuna my husband owned... but I got to take a bite and it was excellent as well. My yakitori was perfectly seasoned and sweetened. Not too saucy and balanced. The chicken was plentiful (which was wonderful, usually I feel cheated on the proteins), tender and satisfying. My husband throughly enjoyed his Spicy Tuna Poke Bowl... as did I with the couple of bites he shared! the amount of tuna in it was impressive and so fresh! ...and protein levels satisfied my Moose of-a-husband. When hearing "sushi speakeasy" I immediately wanted to try this place and it did not disappoint! Walking in it's right in front but also so well hidden. The decor is great and the staff are friendly and professional. They were very accommodating of my service dog which means a lot. You are seated at a table that feels traditional to a sushi bar, with fun changing lights and eyeing the fish they use straight from Japan or Scotland. I was impressed by the quality of each dish. The sour shochu cocktail was spectacular too! The hand rolls were so good we ordered another round. The sushi tacos are a bit difficult to unwrap the plastic from the seaweed, but we were having such a great time it honestly is worth it. I will definitely be coming here around 11-2:30 for dim sum and trying their different options like the taro bao. If you're looking to celebrate your birthday, they also have a very cute way of celebrating! I am sad that I didn't get to take pics of the wagyu nigiri, my 3 pc hand rolls and hubby's 5 pc sushi tacos. It's so dang good we had to order more wagyu nigiri and he ordered another set of 5pc taco sushi. This is our first time staying in SLO. We usually pass by here in the way to Cambria. Since we took the train this time, we decided to stay in SLO. We are so glad we did. This sushi spot is soo good! That wagyu nigiri melts in your mouth! My favorite was the push up rolls. Have nicer had one and reminded me of the old "ice cream push up" but with spicy tuna green onions chopped very finely and great taste. My wife treated me to this new restaurant's RSVP only Omakase experience This place was packed and the staff were working hard, attempting to keep order and balance. Once seated, we were treated to 16 dishes by the main chef who trained in Japan, gained experience in NY and hails from Hong Kong. A very nice gentleman We were overall happy with the selections, the quality, and the friendliness. The scallops, tuna, salmon, and marbled beef were wonderful. The quality of the nori stood out too. Great for those who love sushi! My husband enjoyed his sushi taco set. Being a non-seafood eater, I ordered the yakisoba but it was dry and underwhelming. We also ordered the wagyu nigiri but it was disappointing. They put ginger on too and it completely overpowered the taste if the meat. The unique part about these tacos, which I've never seen before, is that they plastic wrap the seaweed to keep it fresh right before you take a bite. This was different and honestly kind of difficult for everyone who go the sushi tacos. You find yourself having to grab the rice and fish from falling off the entire seaweed. We are outside in the courtyard and you have to still go back inside to pick up your food, which took a fair amount of time. It's trouble. I was here two weeks ago on a Monday around 12PM and I was the only customer dining in there. Two weeks later on a Monday again, but around 1PM, the dining area was surprisingly packed! Ramen bowl there, sushi order over there, the place was popping. I crave sushi almost all the time, and now that I know the sushi is high quality here, it's on my radar for lunch whenever I am closeby. I come for the sushi, but I come BACK for the dim sum that's in the front fridge cart on Mondays. They steam it nice and hot for me. I ate tonkotsu ramen with pork belly, accompanied with shu mai, ha gow and BBQ bao with leftovers to take home. My husband ordered 5 hand rolls and he ate it all! Sushi Table offers sushi/omakase bar seating as well. At the sushi/omakase bar, one's order does not arrive all at once. Rather, the chef creates each selection individually as one eats which provides for optimum freshness. Sushi Table offers authentic Dim Sum dishes every Sunday from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. This speakeasy sushi bar offers an intimate, 12-seat experience designed to bring people together as a community. When I dropped in (midday on a Friday), their 'hidden seating' appeared to be pretty full, highlighting the popularity of this business. What impressed me most was their willingness to honor a 'pop in Yelp Elite Squad experience' (scheduled for the last week in January) for a hand roll set, despite seeming to be unaware of the event and which I later learned had been cancelled without notifying Yelp members. When they expressed not knowing about the event, I informed them several times they did not need to honor what was referenced in the invitation I showed them, but the manager (owner?) insisted on providing the 4-piece hand roll anyway. The staff packaged it in what was about the prettiest take out bag I've ever been given, providing me chopsticks, packaged soy sauce and a quick tutorial on how to eat a hand roll. To say staff were friendly and accommodating is an understatement. The hand roll set included rolls with soy cured ahi tuna, yellowtail with green onions, salmon/sesame/citrus yuzu and albacore with green onions. The ingredients were fresh and delicious, with the soy tuna and salmon rolls being my favorite flavors. Their tutorial for how to eat the rolls DEFINITELY helped! Summary: Great! Fresh Dim Sum every Sunday 11AM to 2 PM. New place in the ranch. They have buns, dumplings, chicken feet, rolls, & more. All other times they serve Japanese food. Detail: We found out about this new Dim Sum spot on the Nextdoor app, from some of their fans that had their Dim Sum before in sort of a pop-up situation here & there...such as in a Chinese New Year celebration in downtown SLO. In any case, since we love Dim Sum, and have eaten it thousands of times over the years, and one cannot find any in our area for over a hundred miles, we were eager to try this new spot. We showed up around noon, and there was both a long line and a long wait, which was fine, since we expected it. Once something gets onto Social Media that involves good food, people will come out of the woodwork to get it. I remember the long wait, at the then new BaO place, at the other market, which is called SLO Public Market. In any case, we waited patiently as dish after dish came out. I was especially yearning to get my fix of Phoenix Claws....AKA Chicken Feet. They looked good, but how did they taste? DA FEET were wonderBar! They had the classic gelatinous texture of skin and cartilage and had a savory sauces as well. It was different from the typical spicy black bean sauce that I am used to, but who cares? After starting on the feet, I also sampled some of the buns as well. Two choices were the sweet desert type with either Custard or Taro. Another was a pork type. We also tried some more choices later on, as we also filled up on good Jasmine Tea. It was really fun, since we chatted with other customers and some of the staff, and everyone was in a great friendly mood. I have no idea why, but both times we have been at this Market Ranch, most people seem quite happy. Seeing people happy in these trying times is really a relief. Of course, while it could be simple denial about our very identity being stolen, or our freedom being stolen, it still feels good, and good to go with Dim Sum and Hot Tea. We also had the pleasure of meeting the two owners, husband & wife, of their small empire of 4 restaurants and one food truck. They have two places in the SLO area, and 2 in Central Valley, 2 hours drive away. We had a nice long conversation with Sonny as we continued to sip on Tea, and nibble on Dim Sum. It was just a perfect way to spend a nice Sunday afternoon brunch in the SLO area. We then went to the next market to see what they had, and then hit the shopping mall next door. My wife picked up a bag at Nordstrom Outlet, a cup at World Market, and then a bunch of groceries at Sprouts. Of course, because of Bird Flu, they, like most stores, were out of even expensive eggs. Wow! We are visiting from out of town and heard that Sushi Table was well worth the trip. We were not disappointed. The ambience is unassuming, casual and very friendly. The seating is all at the counter and the service is very attentive. There were some regulars and people enjoying a special omakase date. We didn't reserve the omakase, but Chef Sunny introduced us to what he had off menu. We started with a range of nigiri from Chef's Tokyo market connections and were blown away by the quality and variety of the fish. Accompanied by their house pickled wasabi stems (like a relish) and fresh ground wasabi, everything had layers of textures and fragrant flavors that made me feel like I have not experienced good sushi for ages. We then had a few classic hand rolls and they were all delicious, especially with their freshly imported nori, which was crispy in a way that makes you realize that most nori you get is simply stale and that's why they have to toast it so much. We ended with toro with sturgeon caviar, another round of imported kampachi, and toro hand rolls with shaved black truffle. This is the kind of food experience that makes you wish you had more days in your itinerary just so you could return for more. This was our second visit in two days. It's that good. This visit was for dinner and we went early at 5:30 and were the first ones at the sushi bar (the only seating outside of the SLO Market common area). The reservation was essential for a seat at the sushi bar. We started with the chef's choice sashimi plate, a side of sushi rice (very vinegary and delicious with the fresh sashimi - but they also offer plain steamed rice) and a fatty tuna (toro) hand roll. The two kinds of wasabi - paste and pickled- were so good! I was eating the pickled wasabi by itself. Also had the Shochu sour cocktail. The hostess didn't give us the drinks list right away; we had to ask for it. They have an extensive list of beers and wines, and five cocktails they make with yuzu and Shochu. FOOD: I would say some are definitely better than others. The first time I went I got the 4 hand roll set (soy cured ahi tuna, yellowtail with green onions, salmon with sesame and lemon yuzu and albacore with green onions) and honestly it was okay. The seafood did taste clean and not fishy or smell fishy at all so that was good but taste wise it was okay. It felt like it lacked something. We also got one unagi sushi taco a la carte and that was delicious! I ordered the taro matcha latte but the guy misheard and made me a taro latte instead but no big deal because it still ended up a really good drink! The taro taste was there but not overwhelming and neither was the milk. Perfect balance. The second time I came around to give it another shot I ordered the 3 sushi taco set (spicy tuna with avocado, salmon and sesame and blue crab and kewpie mayo) and I also got the wagyu nigiri. ALL OF THEM WERE DELICIOUS. That wagyu nigiri was soft and buttery. A good amount of wagyu ratio compared to the rice. Very minimal soy sauce that was put on by the chef. So so good. If it wasn't $13 a piece I definitely would have ordered more lol. The sushi taco set was definitely more tastier than the hand roll set I got my first visit. The blue crab was my favorite. Real crab and not imitation. Plenty of it as well. Melts in your mouth and not overly dressed by the kewpie mayo which was perfect. I also ordered an uni hand roll. They tasted it to make sure it was good to serve since it has a more delicate taste and I'm glad to see that they were willing to taste their own product before serving. It shows quality control is on point here. Uni was clean and buttery tasting instead of hit of the entire ocean on your palate lol. Highly recommend the taco sets, wagyu and uni when they have it. SERVICE: The service felt so personal in a good way. It wasn't busy hours so that could be why. On my second visit I asked to sit by the bar seating so I can watch the preparation and said that was perfectly fine. The chef and owner is very hands on which was a good thing to see. He strikes up conversation and gets to know his customers and even gave a free tote bag. He kept asking if everything was okay and the other cooks and servers too were very nice and helpful in teaching customers how to pull the plastic wraps to expose the seaweed roll to maintain crispiness until ready to be eaten. Amazing service. AMBIANCE: Small little stall with bar seating. If you want more space there's plenty of communal seats and tables inside the building and outside with shade. It could get loud depending on the hours or days you decide to visit. The stall is basically in a food hall setting. But the bar seating gives it a more intimate feel with your food and company. Clean and good ventilation. I highly recommend this place or at least try it once. They do offer bobas, teas, ramen, teriyaki bowls and even a dimsum brunch on sundays only! Locally and family owned. Wow my friends told me about this restaurant and they were not wrong. The seafood is so fresh, and the chef takes such care in its selection and presentation! The seaweed is kept crispy with a special cover so it doesn't get soggy before you eat it! (after being shipped straight from Japan) Absolutely everything is fresh. The taste is amazing!
