TL;DR: I will not be returning to Nippon again after the long, bizarre, and frustrating saga I went through this weekend. The only reason why I am not giving them 1 star is because they are refunding me for my entire order since they messed up so bad. (I am still waiting on the refund and will update my review if there are any additional troubles in getting the refund.) I haven't come here in a couple years, but it used to be really good. There were a lot of rolls on the menu that always interested me and I had tried my fair share of them back in the day. Recently, I had a craving for sushi (I sort of always have a craving for sushi) and was in the area, so I thought - why not place an order from Nippon? Haven't been there in so long! So I placed an order online, and my troubles began. The online ordering system is a pain and not user friendly. Once you add a roll, there's no way of removing it unless you just wanted to start all over again. There also was a lot of scrolling involved. As I was looking through the entire menu, I noticed that a lot of my old favorites were no longer on the menu. I picked a few that sounded good, and because the online interface was so cumbersome, I was a bit nervous even after placing the order, so I called the restaurant to confirm that they had received my order. They said they did and that it would be ready in 30-40 minutes, which was great because Nippon is located around every store imaginable, so I had plenty of places to run errands to kill the time! 40 minutes later with my errands completed, I was at Nippon and I called again to confirm that my order was ready before I went into the store to pick it up (they do not have curbside pickup as an option). When I called, the person said that they didn't have my order and put me on hold to figure it out. He came back and said that apparently they had lost my order and just now found it and would rush to make it and that it would take another 20-30 minutes! Well...that was a bit annoying! My concerns had been validated, the online ordering system did feel very flawed, and my order had been lost despite me calling 40 minutes ago and them confirming that they had received my order. Now with all my errands completed, I had no choice but to sit there in the parking lot for another 30 minutes waiting for them to make my order. After 30 minutes, I called again and they said they were packing up my order, so I went in to sign my receipt and pick up my order. I drove the 20 minutes back to my house, tired & famished after a long day, and as I was walking in my door, I got a call from Nippon... They said they had just received another ticket under my name with the same exact order and somehow through that were thinking that they had given me the wrong order. Logically, I don't understand how this makes sense. What order ticket were they looking at and going off in all my calls to them when I gave them my FULL name if they now thought that they had made my order wrong! I set down my stuff, opened up the bag with my sushi in it, and lo and behold it was wrong. I had ordered 5 rolls, there were only 4. Of the 4, 3 were not what I had ordered. Oy vey! Nippon asked if I wanted to come back and grab my "actual" order because they were willing to make it, but I said no because this entire process ended up taking an hour longer than I had anticipated and with the 20 minute drive there and back again, it just wouldn't be worth it! I also don't understand what was going on with their online ordering system that my order, which was placed at 6:30 pm, did not show up in their system until 8:30 pm and what order they had confirmed me for prior..... The cherry on top of all of this was that I still tried the sushi and it was extremely disappointing not just for the fact that it wasn't what I had ordered, but because I eat a lot of sushi, and could tell that this was not good sushi. The ingredients were not the freshest, the portions were small, the protein they put into the meats were skimp, and all in all, not at all how I remembered my Nippon experiences going back in the day. They must've changed owners or chefs or something because it was a complete 180 from my experiences in years past. read more

This was a to go order that I ate in my car before my next meeting and I had to ask for chopsticks, ordered and received my side of Ponzu but there was no soy sauce or napkins in the brown paper bag that it was in! Eating just a minuscule piece of the pickled ginger or dipping it in the ponzu sauce obliterated what little taste of "King Crab" that there was! I ordered the salmon teriyaki entree since the house special for the bento box was gyoza and they were out of sweet potato tempura today. I ordered a small side salad for my hubby, since my salmon comes with miso soup and a side salad. They have the pink ginger here, not my favorite. The cream cheese is an extra $1 and the green onion is an extra $.50 per roll add. Order came to $55.65. The salmon teriyaki became a bit congealed from the drive home, the salmon was a bit over cooked, but didn't taste too bad. The ginger side salad was good, miso was as expected. The Cali rolls were good, though I don't think it was $1 and $0.50 worth for the cream cheese and the green onions in each roll. I've really enjoyed having a great sushi, Bibimbap restaurant close to the house. They offer all of our favorites, like katsu chicken and udon bowls. I like their sushi selection. It always tastes fresh. The bibimbap chicken is always marinated right and is made very well. The staff is always pleasant, attentive, and accommodating. We can't go wrong coming here on a Friday night after a long work week. We tried their tempura shrimp and vegetables for the first time with an udon order, we got it on the side. It was super delicious, made just right! I really enjoyed it. I'm also happy they brought back their happy hour specials. They disappeared for a while. I wasn't able to go to happy hour this time, but I hope to go soon. The only criticism I have it that some of the prices are a bit high. Seems they've raised them a bit recently. I have a love/ hate relationship with this place. The service ranges from awful to acceptable. I stopped ordering to go because they never get it right. Most of the time they are very short staffed. Thregood however is almost always good. Nine of us decided to come here for lunch to celebrate a coworkers birthday. We arrived at noon. At 12:30 I asked the hostess if they can please take our orders, at that point we sat for 30 mins without so much as a hello. SO a fun game of when will we get our food ensued. See screenshot below. My friends and I came for Dine-in eating during this COVID-19 pandemic. They follow rules by enforcing social distancing and wearing masks while also providing hand sanitizer on their tables. The only other thing that went right was their amazing miso (we got a fresh batch) and ginger salad (Only things I would recommend from here ). Service was good as the waiter refilled our water and revisited the table several times. We ordered a lot and to say the least- NOT IMPRESSED. Having ordered the nigiri, we were shorted on the amount given compared to prior visits while paying the same high price. The sushi was mediocre at best and lacked that fresh taste. What really sets them a part from good sushi places was their portions seem to be so small/tiny as pictured (other sushi places in the Bloomfield vicinity are better and more generous with portions). Moreover, the sushi rice lacked freshness and was stiff. Furthermore, being an avid fan of edamame, theirs lacked taste due to a lack of salt. We decided to have lunch at Nippon Sushi because we wanted to try their Bento Boxes. These are usually a great deal, combining several favorites into a divided box. They also included soup and salad, and ranged from about $13 to around $18. As on our previous visit for dinner, we received a friendly greeting and were seated immediately. Our server, Jeffrey, brought us glasses of water and then gave us a few minutes to select what we wanted from the menu. My wife decided to have the Chicken Katsu Bento Box and I decided to get the Nippon Bento Box. I also asked if they had steamed Gyoza. I had the deep-fried Gyoza last time but, because I never had crunchy Gyoza in Japan, I'm not a fan. Ideally, and more specifically, it should be pan fried and then steamed... makes me drool just describing it. They did make Steamed Gyoza and that was good, better than deep fried, in my humble opinion. But I still prefer the pan-fried-and-steamed version I initially experienced all over Japan. Both Bento Boxes came with Miso Soup (really good and Reiko was impressed) and a salad with Ginger Dressing on the side, just how we normally like it. But the dressing was so tasty that, after one bite, I decided to just dump the rest of it on the salad. Miso Soup and Ginger Salad were both excellent! Then the Bento Boxes arrived! Reiko's Chicken Katsu Bento came with Fried Rice, Vegetable Tempura, Shumai, Strawberry and Kiwi. My Nippon Bento came with Sashimi (2 pieces each of Salmon, Tuna, Red Snapper, and White Tuna), Nigiri-zushi (1 piece each of Inari, Tamago, and Shrimp), and a Shrimp Tempura Roll. As is our usual method, we shared some of everything so both of us could try more things. Everything was delicious! The Sashimi came as generous slices of very fresh fish, the Tempura was crispy and not overly greasy, and the Chicken Katsu was more Chicken than breading, unlike some other places. The only ding I have is a pet peeve about Tempura when daikon-oroshi (the grated radish to add to the sauce) is missing - a must-have for an authentic Japanese tempura. Throughout our meal, Jeffrey checked on us (but not to an annoying level) to see if we needed any thing else and to keep our water glasses full. When we were done eating, dishes were cleared promptly and we didn't have to wait for our bill to be presented. Overall, it was an excellent dining experience. With a 5-star review by me, this restaurant might become overly crowded, which means I might have trouble getting a seat in the future. So part of me did not want to rave about it but, hey, it was that good!! read more
