I'm not quite sure how I spent a few years living in DC and found only mediocre (at best) Indian, only to discover a place in Olney that makes fantastic dishes and some damn good Samosas My only complaint is the level of rice is a bit small, I want enough rice that I can bury my face into a bowl of curry and eat my way out so perhaps I'm not the best critic on that front read more

Probably will not be back. I was disappointed with everything overall- quality, taste, price and portions. With so many options - this was buffet quality Indian food at a sit down price. The chicken tikka masala lacked any richness, depth and real seasoning. It was more of a thick gravy like a mild butter chicken. The chicken itself was not fresh. The garlic naan was VERY garlicy and yet had a dry burnt taste- I had a mouthful of char and garlic... and it wasn't pleasing. The other chicken tikka karai was the consistency of beef stew. The flavors of the peppers did not stand out like they would in a fresh dish just all one underwhelming flavor- although it was slightly better than the masala. The salad was also just some lettuce with three shaved slices of cucumber and a tomato. Again, everything was completely underwhelming. I expect spices and flavor when I have Indian food- not bland stews with dry meat. I'll stick to Dosa and Chaat in Gaithersburg for my Indian food fix or even House of India in Columbia... completely disappointed with Nirvana. read more

I never thought I would see the day that Olney had an Indian restaurant but finally that day is here. Nirvana is a good addition to the restaurants in town. My sister and I ordered a bunch of dinner for take out. My sister got the tandoori chicken kofta and said it was pretty good. I had the chicken Karai which was a stir fry dish. A really good flavor from the spices, I could've used just a little more spice but it was good. The basmati rice had a great flavor with added spices. Garlic naan was fresh and delicious- definitely would order it again. The rice pudding was awesome. Overall solid spot, just a little pricy for the portions read more

Once again, I find myself in Olney, looking for some flavor and stumble upon Nirvana (literally?). Tucked away in a strip mall (like all things in Olney), this place doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you're inside, it's damn good - I love Indian food, and this place really delivers. We started with the samosas and papri chaat, which is a snack of potato, chickpeas and chutney. The samosas were crispy but light, and filled with warm, smooth potatoes and peas and just a tinge of spice. The papri chaat was the best I'd ever had - it's served cold with fried crisps tossed on top. The spices were on the sweet side, and I left the bowl so that I could dip my naan bread into it later (I had to stop the servers from taking the finished bowl!). I ordered the dinner special of two entrees (I chose chicken tikka masala and lamb vindaloo), with rice and naan bread. The chicken tikka masala was cooked well, only a little gristle, and the creamy smooth curry was bright and full of flavor but not too spicy. The lamb vindaloo was dark and meaty, with well-cooked lamb that was tender enough to cut with a fork. The Naan is perfectly baked you can taste the butter, and the rice carried the food easily without being overbearing. The portions are not huge, but enough to fill your belly. For dessert we tried the gulab jamun, two fried dough balls drenched in honey and spices. A perfect finish to a great meal, not too sweet, and a nice touch to an evening of flavor. Definitely worthwhile - if you want flavor and spices, this is the place. Dare I say it, it may be worth venturing to the outer reaches of Olney specifically to try Nirvana Indian Cuisine! read more

Wonderful! Among the best Indian meals we have enjoyed (and we love Indian food). Full of flavor. At Nirvana, the spices shine through without the use of too much oil. (Sometimes, restaurant meals can overuse oil and we leave the restaurant feeling stuffed, but not here). They easily accommodated our requests for vegan dishes. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside and our server was very gracious. We're so glad we discovered this gem and look forward to returning. read more

Came here on Sunday after worship service. I was surprised that we were the only people in the restaurant. We ordered the chicken vindaloo, aloo gobi, naan, garlic naan, goat curry, lamb and chicken kabob. Everything was delicious. I don't usually eat indian food because it can be a little oily but everything was really well prepared. Will be coming back here again. read more

I tried this place out because of the reviews. Pros: Clean, friendly servers, aesthetically pleasing, calm environment. Cons: This was my only complaint. There was no. Seasoning. At. All. Omg. I am Indian so from the smells coming from the kitchen I was expecting something amazing. However, once I looked around myself and noticed we were the only Indian family there- I got a little worried because some place will make things mild to adjust to the taste of their customers. I was right. I've had better paneer, Saag, and naan at home honestly. I didn't even taste salt. I REALLY wanted to like this place, but the lack of flavor really threw me off. Drove here from Rockville for dinner and was not disappointed. I generally love chicken tikka masala and this was one of the best ones I've ever had. Chicken was tender and juicy and the sauce was rich and flavorful. Had to soak it up with the naan! I went twice so far over two consecutive days. I had the chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, lamb curry, and channa masala. I also had the mango lassi (very good). Everything was cooked to perfection. The food honestly speaks for itself. The service was fast and attentive. I got a table immediately both times. No complaints whatsoever. Went for a late lunch today and had a great meal. They were nice enough to let us look at and order from the regular menu as well. They do have nice looking lunch specials that include salad and rice. We ordered: papri chaat, butter chicken, chicken tikka, garlic naan and cucumber raita. Rice was served with the meal and even gave us a separate small plate of it for my toddler (she liked it). I had wanted the palak chaat but they said it was unavailable. Mango lassi to drink. FOOD: Papri chaat had a very nuanced flavor and was light and delicious. I love the one at Bombay Bistro, but this felt more upscale. I personally would have liked a bit more sauce and more flour crisps. Overall give it a 9. The butter chicken was rich, velvety, and had a sweet kick. A surprising spicy hint at the end. Chicken was tender and portions were plentiful. Also a 9. The tandoori chicken was very juicy and flavorful with a nice char. I didn't like the fajita plate presentation, but the chicken was good. Give it an 8. My daughter liked it too. Cucumber raita was fine, would have liked a larger portion of it. Garlic naan was tasty, and sized to share. The rice was tasty and good portions of it, and I think they will bring you more if needed. SERVICE: We came at the end of lunch service, so it was empty. Water refilled promptly. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The manager and chef came out to ask how everything was. AMBIENCE: Beautiful restaurant and check out the ceiling. Tables for about about 60 to dine. 6-8 tops for larger parties. Would be nice for date night or family gatherings. BONUS: For those with nut allergies, I believe the sauces and main dishes are peanut and treenut free. I did notice a dessert had nuts listed. OVERALL: Be understanding of kinks in FoH and BoH, they did just open and have had unexpected crowds and takeout business. These are seasoned restaurateurs and will get it together soon. The food was very good, a welcome addition to Olney. TIP: I'm hoping for some coupons/discounts or other specials (daily dishes?)in the future! Would be nice to add a changing table too in bathrooms. Location: Right next to a lot of restaurants in the Rite Aid shopping center off Georgia Ave. Parking is always a bliss here! Price: My mother and I went to this place for an early birthday lunch and we went when they had their lunch special! We ordered 4 entrees (small servings), a garlic naan, and vegetable Samoas that came to a total of around $35 (not including tip) Atmosphere: The decor is very sleek, modern, and has a clean/upscale vibe. They even served water in a wine glass. Also, the lighting is very dark in there for some reason.. Food: It is OK and for the price, the food fills you up. The Chicken Tikka Masala was really good! They give you an option of choosing 2 entrees for the lunch special but the entrees come in very small serving bowls with a side of salad and rice. The lunch menu is also very small. Both garlic naan and the vegetable samosa was delicious. Service: We had a really chill server and he explained to us what foods on the menu were popular. there was another worker behind the bar but he didn't seem very friendly since he didn't greet us and was just hiding in the back. Four stars is not exactly accurate but I'm grading on a curve. Got take out from Nirvana tonight and it did not go quickly or smooth. Waited beyond reason. But they just opened. They're understaffed and I think surprised by the level of traffic coming their way so early. The decor is nice. There's maybe 20 or so tables inside. The food was delicious. The staff was busy. I spoke to one of the owners and he was very nice. It's a family owned place. I'll come back in a week or so when they've got everything running smooth. The food at this restaurant is absolutely delicious. I have not had one thing that did not taste good. A plus for me is that this place is a family affair. I believe the son is the manager, the patriarch of the family is the head cook and the matriarch of the family can be seen frequently serving food and chatting with customers. This was one of the best Indian meals I've had in a while. My partner and I had the dinner special which is a great offering. We both got to choose from two entrees. He chose the lamb vindalo and the chana masala. I chose the chicken tikka masala and the saag paneer. We couldn't decide on a favorite because all were wonderful. In my humble opinion certainly the best indian food in the area. the food is very authentic, can be a little spicy, so make sure if you like it mild be sure to mention it. they are very accomodating to that and extremely friendly taking orders and interactions. Nirvana was an absolute delight. Every dish that we had, from a side of basmati rice, to the naan, to our main courses of butter chicken, saag paneer, and chicken kabob, was layered with aromatics and subtle flavors. For those afraid of spicy, do not let this fear stop you from trying Indian food here. While some dishes pack heat, nothing we experienced was overwhelming. In fact, my first thoughts were how spice was only present enough to enhance the natural flavors of the ingredients (kind of like how sheer make-up only enhances one's "natural beauty"). For a beginner in Indian food, definitely order the butter chicken and naan, and end your meal with masala chai (spiced tea with milk -- not spicy though!). The one criticism people might have is the service, however, this seems to based on the owners hiring local youngsters as waiters/waitresses. We had the feeling this was their first jobs, so we were patient when a couple of mix-ups happened. The owners also walked around to ensure everyone was satisfied with their food. The staff were also more than willing to explain what different dishes consisted of to newbies to Indian cuisine. I highly recommend! One of the best Indian restaurants I've been to! read more
