I visited Chutney for lunch, not realizing it was a buffet. I'm not a fan of buffets, so I planned to order off the menu, but the staff encouraged me to look at the buffet offerings, as the meal I planned to order was available there. I have to say, I was very pleased with the buffet items ! I had biriyani rice, chicken Tikka, chili chicken and the naan. Half of the buffet is vegetarian, and the other half has chicken, shrimp, and goat as options. Service was good and the restaurants was clean. It was time to venture out of DC to meet up in a central location for everyone's after work hours. We were seated immediately and given water. Our drinks also came out fast, I had the salt lassi. For food we got the garlic naan, daal soup, samosas, chicken curry, and the chicken vindaloo. It's all greatly portioned to where you can try and everything had a deep rich flavor. My 600th Yelp review! I'm breaking up from the current series of Yelp reviews I'm doing as I didn't want what would be the next one to make be my 600th review. I visited Chutney Indian twice. It was solid, but my girlfriend & I tried House of India in the next shopping center over, and we felt it was better. However, Chutney is still a very good choice. I had my birthday party here in February 2024. I got biryani rice platter, which was great, as was the Mango Lassi and the alcoholic beverage I had. I tried some of the Indian beer, which was good. Staff was accommodating for my large turnout, like 19 or 20 people. The restaurant is kind of small, but they made it work. The 2nd time I went was in March 2024 with my girlfriend. She didn't make it to my birthday party as we were only 1 date in at that point and felt it was premature to have her meet a bunch of my friends. We enjoyed a nice meal here. I'm still holding on to the leftover sauce from the Butter Chicken in my fridge from 3 days ago...I can't let it go. I'm looking for some chicken to throw in there to be coated by its goodness. My goodness. I'm eternally grateful to God for giving someone the idea of this restaurant and their Butter Chicken. Butter Chicken: very rich, creamy, delicious sauce. For sure the best Butter Chicken I've had and I've been on a hard search for it. Lamb Korma: really great flavor but I think I prefer the Lamb Korma from Amber Spice. I don't want to take away from this one though because it was really good. The Lamb was cooked brilliantly. It was perfectly tender, probably the best cooked I've experienced. The sauce was very rich and creamy but I feel like it was just missing a little mmph.... But it could be because the Butter Chicken was the absolute star of the show and didn't have time to shine on its own. Garlic naan: good size and taste, no complaints! Mango Lassi: had too much of a sour, tangy taste for my liking but I'm sure some may like it this way. Was definitely sweet... More yogurts than what I prefer... Came for their Saturday lunch buffet with a bunch of friends and it didn't disappoint. First time here in many years and I left fully stuffed. Pretty good variety on the buffet with both vegetarian and meat options. The goat curry, saag, and jumbo shrimp dish were the stars. The butter chicken was meh, breast meat was way overcooked and rubbery. Tandorri chicken was good though. They bring naan and dosas to the table and both were great. Service was spot on and quick. Harsher review as I have eaten Indian food all my life. Definitely not authentic in taste despite me asking the waiter to make it spicy and traditional. Plus, my stomach got very upset after my meal which never happens to me with Indian food! I ordered the Aloo Tikki appetizer with Malai Kofta, Palak Paneer, Garlic Naan, and Mango Lassi. The Mango Lassi was good, but everything else was subpar and disappointing. The Aloo Tikki were smaller in size than I expected and while they had a crispy texture, it was incredibly bland and not spicy for my tastebuds. The Palak Paneer upset my stomach- it was too buttery and not enough spices and flavor. The Malai Kofta was probably the better dish of the 2, but that also severely lacked spices and flavor. Yes, it tasted like Malai Kofta but they could've done a better job seasoning it. I wish more garlic was on the garlic naan. The ambiance was more on the classy end with decent prices compared to other Indian restaurants in the area. I enjoyed hearing good Bollywood songs which added to the vibe. This place is good for someone trying to explore Indian cuisine. But, this absolutely isn't real Indian food. The most legitimate tasting items were the pappad (crispy appetizer item), tamarind chutney, and mango lassi. Though you can't mess up a mango lassi. Given I make and eat more authentic Indian dishes at home, it is unlikely I will come back. Please cater to South Asian tastebuds especially when specifically asked to do so. The restaurant was not busy during lunch hours on a Sunday. We were welcomed and were seated in a booth. I got the super tasty mango lassi. It must be hard to screw up. We ordered too much food, but thankfully they were all delicious. The butter chicken was good, but what surprised me was the 65 chicken. I've never ever heard of this entree before but it mixes both Indian and possibly Chinese spices (maybe 65 of them) to create this lovely dish. I would come back for the 65 chicken alone. read more

We only tried the weekend buffet $$. But I think a buffet is a good measure of the quality and authenticity of the food. Aside from maybe two items every dish was served at the proper temperature, looked good and the buffet was clean. One negative was the tandoori chicken chafing dish too hot and a few us felt the pain opening and closing it. The other negative terrible Chai. Which they claimed was masala chai. Yet enough good food that they have Indian clients. Good sign. The desserts were good so you win some and you lose some. Service during the buffet was decent but could have been much better. They have a lot of staff on the floor, but there's a clear disconnect. They didn't come by with naan often enough, but the naan was fresh, piping hot and buttered. They also include mini masala dosa, it's ok but you have to get the chutney and sambar from the buffet comes. Btw the bowls are not near either so it's a tight squeeze and a pain to get them. The men's restroom was pretty clean but the ladies were upset about the state of things in their restroom. Overall it is worth a visit. I rate this average - nothing spectacular, but nothing bad either. We came on a Tuesday evening and only 1 other table was there, but plenty of customers coming in for take out. Our menus were carry out pamphlets, which I think they should probably upgrade to match the beautiful setting with table cloths. We ordered the chat papri which was crunchy and tasty, and not long after our entrees were brought out. I would've appreciated more time to eat our appetizer, which we ended up taking home. My husband and I shared the chicken-65 and lamb korma. We were not asked about spice level. The lamb sauce was mild and delicious and had a very good portion of meat. I really enjoyed dipping the garlic naan in it. The chicken was good, a little spicy (perfect for us non-Indians who appreciate a little kick). Went on a friday evening and the place was smaller than i expected, but still fit a good amount of people. Our waiter was so kind and helpful, and other waiters also stopped by to clean plates and fill our water. The chicken briyani was hugee, it barely looked like I ate any, and it was very good. Super fragrant with a generous amount of chicken. The chicken tikka masala was also delicious, and the garlic naan was to die for. We also ordered meat samosas and it was perfect. We weren't sure of what spice level to get, and we were about to get the highest but our waiter was like naww you should get medium spicy. After seeing all the reviews, we chose this Indian restaurant to try out. Upon entering, we were quick to realize how popular this place is! Almost every single table was filled and the restaurant roared with laughter and conversations. Once we were sat down, which was pretty immediately, the waiter came by and filled our glasses with water, gave us the menus, and even lit up a candle. Wow! He came back shortly after and placed down a complementary basket of Indian crisps and three different chutneys/sauces! This is a first for us! We had so much fun trying the flavors on the crispy cracker.. should've asked what it was. We placed an order for the chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, and tandoori chicken, and three orders of garlic naan. The curries came out in a smaller bowl than what were used to, but we were pleasantly surprised by how much chunks of chicken were in there. My tikka masala had chicken that wasn't as tender as i liked and was a bit stringy. The curry was also more mild and had less spices. I preferred my boyfriend's butter chicken which was a richer red in color and tasted a bit more spicy. We could've gone with the hot level in spice--medium was super mild in heat. The garlic naan was glistening when it came out and had plenty of visible garlic pieces but kind of lacked in flavor. It was also on the thicker side for a naan so that really filled us up. My sister was content with her Tandoori chicken but as she kept eating, the flavors grew on her and she learned to appreciate it. Overall, service has been spectacular for an Indian restaurant, the vibes were right, and food hit the spot after a six hour car ride. Would I come back? We came in on Sunday, they maybe had 4-5 tables going. It took us around 15 minutes for someone to come over to the table and no welcome just "so you know what you want to order". We ended up ordering only our appetizers and then waited another 20 minutes for someone to come around and ask us about what we wanted to actually eat.
