Kids and I enjoyed a feast of both Northern and Southern Indian food, the food was authentic, fresh, and pleasantly mild. The crispy Masala Dosa and Saag Paneer Dosa was on point (the Masala and Saag Paneer were served on the side). While the spinach Saag Paneer was tasty, the Masala paired a bit better with the dosa than the Saag. The Paneer Makhani hit the spot! It had a mild spicy kick and despite its name, it had a different curry than Daal Makhani and tasted similar to creamy tomato sauce Paneer Tikka. The Daal Makhani tastes like the daal my mom makes at home. It was really nice and appreciated that I could get a side portion of both the daal and the paneer makhani. It was a great way to try the dishes without committing to a large portion. The Garlic Naan was good and great for mopping up the curry, it just wasn't that bubbly and fluffy. This spot is unique in that they have both South Indian and North Indian dishes. I like South Indian food because it is generally healthier, but for a diverse group a place that has both cuisines is ideal. This restaurant also has a spring dosa, which is uncommon, and added extra vegetables upon request, which I really appreciated. The only reason I didn't rate higher is because the veggies appeared to be from a bag of frozen vegetables and not really the type that would typically go with South Indian food. Without a doubt the worst Indian food I have ever attempted to eat. The naan was soggy, I am quite certain the basmati rice was instant rice, the veggies used in the curry was a mixed frozen blend (I kid you not) and I could not even detect a taste of curry in any of the dishes ordered. I opted for the paneer w spinach, butter chicken, chickpeas and basmati rice lunch for $14. Was it the best curry I've had? Far from. But was it decent? Yes. I mean, everything was precooked to the location and warmed up to serve. The rice was well cooked. The butter chicken was a little overcooked with the cubes of breast meat. The spinach still had quite a few spice pods in the mixture that made for exciting bites! The chickpeas, unfortunately, lacked flavor and was more just spicy. Naan was totally forgettable. Unfortunately a bad experience, I ordered kulfi, halfway done eating it and wanted to collect some pistachio pieces to add to my kulfi from the container. When I look down I see this big piece and thought wow I must be lucky to have been blessed with a big chunk of pistachio, to then be surprised upon better lighting and inspection. Bug skin! Always go for the small family-owned hole in the wall place. Which this is. Their menu is quite appealing; it offers a nice variety including a South Indian selection. Vegan items are marked, and choices are pretty diverse. Among the hard-to-find items are a paneer kathi roll appetizer (basically a tortilla with delicious cheese and sauce inside) and a masala dosa. I really liked this dosa (a fermented lentil-based crepe). It tasted freshly made, was fluffy and aromatic, and large. The potato masala filling was delicious and not overly onion-y as these things often are. This was head and shoulders above the dosa I tried at Malgudi in DC, and a good dosa is hard to come by around here. The sambar that came with the dosa and the mulligatawny soup I ordered separately were fine; salty to be sure and tasty enough, but not the highlight. It seemed to be professionally run; they had fast service and their website is quite functional, which is for some reason a challenge for some restauranteurs. It's also one of the closer places to NIH and Walter Reed and has a lunch buffet. Definitely a place I'm coming back to. read more

Back in 2007, I was deployed to Fallujah, Iraq. The chow hall in Camp Baharia had Indian, Napali, and Tibetan workers. The food served to US personnel was very bland and processed, but I noticed the chow hall personnel had a yellow color food item. I tried it and it was spicy and awesome. I found out it was Yellow Dal. Yellow Dal helped my personal morale while in Fallujah. When I have been getting the Yellow Dal crave, I go to Bethesda Curry Kitchen. The Dal is full of flavor and continues to fulfill my stateside morale. When it comes to buffet, they don't have what I am craving, but with the staff person giving spice sauce on the side, it makes the buffet food tasty. This is my favorite Indian restaurant. Anil's cooking is the best: fresh with wonderful seasoning. His core menu is fantastic and nuanced, from Masala Dosa to anything (salmon, shrimp, chicken) tandoori. Aloo gobi is bright, perfectly spiced and his malai kafta heavenly. Tonight I met the Chef Specials for the first time, his new creations. I selected the gobhi avadhi and it was exceptional, a head of cauliflower with a very light batter beautifully seasoned. Three meat options, two of which are chicken (tender butter chicken is tastier than the meaty but cold tandoori chicken), and half a dozen vegetarian dishes plus accoutrements. Generic salad, cucumber raita, tamarind chutney, cauliflower citrus achaar. Reasonably fresh honeydew and cantaloupe chunks, thin kheer. Naan was texturally fine if lacking salt and fat, but they need to clean their oven-- scorched carbon dust is a bummer. Medu vada aren't as dense as lentil donuts might be imagined, but are as surprisingly bland as their saag paneer. Didn't care for their thin and grittily mild yellow daal. Rice is fine. Makhani had been picked through of lentils, but the vegetables in there were the tastiest vegetarian option besides the baghare baingan. Appreciated the spiced broccoli, and you've hit the cream of the crop if you get a fresh batch of paalak pakora. Basic layout, appropriate background music, metered street parking and garages nearby. Service was efficient both times, and my order was ready earlier than quoted, but I'm not impressed by the actual food. They have five direct competitors doing superior execution within a 2-mile radius, although only half their rivals offer delivery too. Lamb raajma curry spice levels were good with cooked through kidney beans at even ratio. Meats are tender and reasonably portioned for the container size, and rice was fine. Unfortunately, the mango lassi was absurdly watery (bigger pour when dining in) and the chaat papri was clunky and lacking the crunchy textures and complex flavors I've gotten used to with this type of street food. While it's not my favorite of Bethesda's Indian restaurants, I thought the chicken tikka masala I ordered was delicious and creamy. It was also spicy, to my liking. My favorite place for Indian food in Bethesda. I think their Aloo Gobi is a bit more tomatoey than I'm used to, and that's just fine. I keep meaning to try something different here but Aloo Gobi is my favorite Indian dish. They label menu items that are vegan, which is always helpful. I believe they do the same for gluten free items but that's not something I pay much mind. Plenty of vegan options for appetizers and entrees, nothing as of now for dessert. I made reservations for this restaurant on a Saturday night at 7pm thinking it would be packed and when we got there, there was an empty dining room. ON A SATURDAY AT 7pm. So we ordered the veggie samosas and they were pretty good! They were small and not that stuffed, but good. Then we ordered the Pani puri. Underwhelming at best, but still refreshing. Oh Em Gee. What a pleasant and thoroughly satisfying experience. My hubby has been itching to try this place ever since they opened a little while ago practically across the street from our apartment building. However, being South Asian myself, I can definitely be a bit of an Indian Food Snob. I think Kadhai is OK and Passage of India is Good but this place reminded me of meals back home in Lahore (Pakistan). When you walk in you notice that the decor is sparse but the place is shiny and clean. The AC was running full force and the place felt cool and inviting. The variety of dishes was impressive and even though they don't have any Naan sitting out (and getting cold), they're happy to bring you a Naan basket with freshly baked, soft, plump Naan. Oh Naan. (Added Note: I wanted to add in response to another reviewer that Naan is in fact NOT meant to be served crisp. You've probably been to too many shoddy Indian restaurants to come to expect that.
