A delicious and delightful lunch at Commonwealth. I ordered the Butter Chicken Lunch Combo and it was a great amount of food: A portion of white rice, one garlic naan (cut into quarters), a bowl of daal (lentils, a bit spicy), the butter chicken (not spicy) and the avocado mango salad. The chicken was juicy and delicious in the velvety smooth creamy curry. I also loved the zesty salad and the luxuriously creamy and flavorful daal. My husband had the Yellow Crab Curry ($22.99). It contained a very generous portion of lumped crab and the curry was smooth and creamy as well. The curry came with rice and we had the option of ordering additional naan, if needed. The restaurant was very quiet for lunch and service was very attentive by the waiter and the Maître d' The restaurant itself is beautiful and has a nice amount of seating, especially for large events. The waiter advised me the restaurant served about 300 people for their Mother's Day brunch! I thought that was amazing. I also thought I couldn't imagine how difficult it would have been to go to the bathroom during such an event. The women's room had two stalls (and the accessible stall had a diaper changing table), but only one sink! Luckily that was not a concern during our lunch visit. Our started with spinach chaat. The spinach was crispy as it should be, and pomegranate and mango added nice contrast. We got naan but the plain naan was betty than the garlic. For entrees one got the chicken vindaloo. He loves heat, but this dish overwhelmed him. Along with his sputtering, his checks had a nice rosy red glow. Our crab curry was a nice change. I don't see crab on alot of Indian restaurant menus. It was blue crab, albeit from Louisiana. Tasted fine though. Our other dishes were butter chicken, and chicken tikka marsala. As an Indian myself, I vouch for this place having some of the best food in the DMV area from my part of the world, particularly on the appetizer side. Finally took the time to stop by this restaurant in pike & rose. The atmosphere is on the nicer end. Perfect for date nights but also good for a casual night with friend or family. Came in with my mom more casual and didn't feel out of place. Our server was great at explaining everything to us and giving us his recommendations based on what we told him our preferences were. My one critique on the food overall is the side of rice portion compared to the amount of sauce/curry isn't enough. I ordered an extra side of rice to have enough for my leftovers. Count me as a fan of Commonwealth! Very nice and modern Indian restaurant located in Pike and Rose. I love the interior of the restaurant- it's so nice. I couldn't believe they have crispy spinach chaat on their menu. This is Rasika's signature dish, so now I don't have to go to DC to satisfy my craving. It was very good, almost as good as Rasika's. My daughter really enjoyed the butter chicken and garlic naan. It was her first time trying Indian food and she can't wait to come back again. She's a picky eater, so that is saying something. It was also my first time trying Chicken Biryani. This is one spicy dish! Chicken was very tender and flavorful. The portion sizes here are pretty large, so this dish was my leftover lunch and dinner the following day. Our server was very friendly, and food came out pretty quick. I've read the past reviews of a lunch buffet, but that isn't being offered any more. They do have lunch specials though. This past Monday morning was extremely cold, but my friend and I were down to try an Indian restaurant together, so we decided to meet at Commonwealth. I got here a bit before 12 PM, and it was fairly empty. The interior has a fancy, elegant vibe, with neatly folded cloth napkins propped up and silverware already set at each table. After ordering, they gave us complimentary papad (papadam) and mango chutney to enjoy while we waited for our food. The papad looked like a wonton chip at first glance, but it was much lighter and airier. The crunch was gentle and soft that dissolved very easily. Its delicate, lightly salty flavor paired well with the sweetness of mango chutney, which had a thick, jam-like texture with small pieces of mango mixed in. This was a delightful start, and we both really enjoyed it. CHICKEN BIRYANI - 19.99 The portion of the chicken biryani we got was pretty big, with a mountain of aromatic rice topped with plenty of garnish. It was a bit spicy, but not too much. The rice had a wetter, mushier texture, instead of the dry, individual grains I'm used to. The biryani had a decent amount of spice, but the flavors didn't blend harmoniously, like something was missing. The chicken pieces were pretty big, but tender. Overall, it was OK, but not something I'd order again. CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA - 20.99 My friend and I both agreed that the chicken tikka masala was surprisingly delightful, especially the tomato-based curry. The San Marzano tomatoes really shined through, giving the curry a bright sweetness that we both really enjoyed. The chicken was on the drier side, but we didn't mind as much because the bold flavors of the curry made up for it. We'd highly recommend giving the chicken tikka masala a try -- it's definitely one of the best ones I've had at a restaurant. GARLIC NAAN - 4.99 Each order comes with four quarters of naan, generously topped with finely minced garlic. It was on the greasier side, but that also meant it was pretty crispy. We enjoyed the naan with the chicken tikka masala we ordered. At the end, we had a lot of leftovers, enough for the both of us to enjoy another meal. Such a great dining experience! We visited Commonwealth Indian yesterday for dinner and it didn't disappoint. It was an early dinner, so the vibe was quiet. The decor is so beautiful. I have to say that the service was amazing. Our server knew the menu front and back, and was able to explain dishes to the rest of my party who never had Indian food before. Not pictured was the Chaat and Samosas. I got the Chicken Tikka Marsala and we got a few Naans for the table. Flavors were out of this world! My sister got the salmon. Thursday 10/10/2024 This spot is located in the pike & rose area (right next to fogo chao) so you know it's going to be pricey but that's fine as long as the food is worth it. I made a call in order for takeout and spent $61.44 total on: butter chicken (mild) $22, chicken tikka masala (mild) $22, Samosa $9, and garlic naan $5. - the chicken tikka masala was a little underwhelming but it's alright. Also it's not worth $22. - The butter chicken was solid but I've had better. Also it's another item that's not worthy of its price $22 tag. - The samosas were a good size and they were alright BUT $4.50 per samosa is crazy (should be like $3-$3.50 per). It also comes with 2 sauces: green sauce which has a tangy type of flavor and the brown sauce was kinda sweet. - The garlic naan was very disappointing and below average. It didn't have the garlic flavor that I was expecting. - The basmati rice was just rice, nothing more to it. Overall, the food is alright but it's extremely overpriced as the taste and portions are below expectations. The location of this restaurant is noticeable **the name was in big red letters**, it was not hard to find parking either, I went to park at the garage next door. It felt like a palace when I first walked in, you have these tile floors and Indian antiques propped on a shelf on the right, there was a lot to observe overall. I received warm hospitality from the server, hostess, and manager I believe stopped by to say hello. My friend & I ordered two appetizers the chicken mono (delicious with the paired dip) & crispy spinach Chaat ( this one was so refreshing , light & crunchy at the same time). Yellow crab entree was creamy & spicy which I was hoping it was & paired well with white rice & lamp chops were cooked to perfect, tender & juicy. After living in Bethesda for almost ten years, we finally, Finally, chose to order from Commonwealth. I have to admit - we waited eleven years too long Yes we did take out. And yes, it was absolutely amazing. First - the to go orders were packed flawlessly. The containers were double wrapped in plastic wrap to totally prevent any spillage. A very nice touch. The order was prepared promptly and the delivery (which I realize it's a third party vendor) was right on time. The food was still piping hot. Temperature...the spice...that's for later in the review. Of course, their menu at Commonwealth is extensive and we had difficulty narrowing down our choices. So, to solve that conundrum, we ordered far too much food. Chicken Biryani, Chicken Vindaloo, yellow daal tadka, Chana masala, and a spinach/mushroom dish whose name escapes me. Outstanding Everything was outstanding. Each dish was Perfectly seasoned, perfectly balanced. The vindaloo was, of course, the most spicy of the dishes but not to the point of being unbearable. The others had varying degrees of heat, but all simply nuanced flavors. The only thing I erred upon g was piling all five dishes onto the same plate and not savoring each separately. I was able to do that the the sheer volume of leftovers we had and the individual components of each dish was allowed to shine through. We are already planning to go experience the restaurant itself. Hosted an anniversary party here for my parents this past weekend. They set up the first room on the left for us as we had a party of 15 so it was nice having a private space. They had asked me when I made the reservation if I wanted their private party room for an additional $250 so I'm glad I didn't book that and saved some $$. The restaurant is very beautiful and trendy...our room wasn't decorated like the rest of the restaurant but that was ok. We started with drinks and apps and they were all very good, and their drink prices are very reasonable! I had a tamarind margarita, my son had a blueberry vodka drink and several in our party had the mango and plain lassis, and we all loved our drinks. For apps, we had the spinach chaat and chili chicken and both were excellent! For dinner, we had the butter chicken, paneer, okra, Chana masala and daal makhani and everyone loved everything! I ordered the allepy fish to try something different and it was delicious! Everything was also reasonably priced and came with rice, but the naans for $4.50-5 seemed pretty pricey, but were delicious. We ended dinner with pistachio and coconut kulfi, both which seemed pre-made and incredibly hard. We liked the pistachio one but the coconut one tasted like freeze dried coconut...awful. I would skip all together. Their dessert selection was slim and not inviting. Overall we had a great experience and the service was quick and efficient. Finally got a chance to dine in at Commonwealth in Pike & Rose. Saw an IG post about their yellow crab curry and have been dying to try it ever since. Upon walking into the restaurant, I immediately felt like I was underdressed LOL. The interior was well decorated and looked very upscale. The inside was very clean and servers were friendly and polite. David ordered the Chicken Biryani and I got the yellow crab curry. We also got a side of garlic naan. For starters, each table gets a plate of crackers and a sweet jam. The crackers were pretty salty but balanced well with the jam spread. Yellow Crab Curry: WOW. Amazing. You've been warned. The first bite in I was doing my happy dance. Creamy, flavorful, with pieces of lump crabmeat. Yes, this dish was $27, but we definitely had leftovers to go with another meal. I read some reviews saying they wished it had a bit of spice or heat. I'm not big on spice so I was okay with it, but I think maybe the tiniest dash of spiciness could have made the dish even better. A MUST ORDER! Chicken Biryani: If you can handle the heat, this one's for you. Served with a yogurt sauce and even David said he could see why it was there. This dish PLUS the crab curry was spot on. This place is fascinating. It's in a fairly chill part of town (Pike & Rose) where tee shirts and flip flops are the norm but it's pretty darn fancy on the inside. I mean it. The welcome reception and service were all top notch and the decor is lovely. My only hiccup was that the food was just off by a little at every turn. I started with the lobster bisque because what kind of Indian restaurant has lobster bisque? I love a mystery. Was it tasty? Sure it was okay. Was it tomato basil soup with tiny pieces of lobster in it? Yup. It lacked the creaminess that is kinda required to be a bisque. Then I ordered the yellow crab curry. It was $27 and easily had $30 worth of backfin lump crab in it (check the pics...it was NUTS). The wrinkle was that the crab was flavorless. It was either overpowered by the curry sauce (which honestly wasn't that potent) or wasn't flavorful crab. It's difficult to describe so I apologize. This is a lovely restaurant and would be a great place for a date night or evening out but if you want your Indian food to taste mind-blowing that this may not be the place for you. I'm going to try some other stuff on the menu to see if maybe I missed the gold on the menu but for now I'm sticking with four stars. read more

When this place first opened (pre pandemic) I came for the lunch buffet and wasn't exactly blown away. Nevertheless my husband wanted to try it again so we made a reservation for dinner. Still not blown away but by no means disappointed. When it comes to drinks, get the Basil lychee mojito. It's that rare lychee drink that tastes like it has lychee in it and not just the syrup or essence. Hubby said of his Whiskey sour: "classic. Sour. Good." We decided to try something different for an app and got the Truffle khichdi arancini. It's a very cool idea but didn't need the truffle. Just didn't work flavor wise. Didn't add anything it was just too weird, not interesting. Get rid of that flavor and you have a winner. The Paneer lababdar has a truly fabulous gravy/sauce. You can taste the methi for sure, which I love because just tomato sauce with some cream makes me cringe. I would have asked for it to be spicier but that's entirely personal. Hubby said mutton korma was tender with the perfect amount of spice and good amount of mutton. Beautiful decor inside. Not over the top and gauche but still classically Indian with the subtle gold accents. The whole experience was that of a very good, very solid North Indian restaurant but nothing that absolutely knocked our socks off. And there's nothing wrong with that. read more

This was my first time at Commonwealth And I am very impressed ! As soon as you walk in, it's absolutely mesmerizing. The aesthetic is artistic, clean and ample. I will share pictures with this information as I was a bit confused as to where each place was ! We started off with drinks. Tamarind margarita and one night in Mumbai: both drinks were tasty and looked beautiful. We also tried the Taj Mahal beer, which is a light lager. Very refreshing For our appetizers we had the Tandoori octopus and the arancini. Both tasted great! The arancini balls are big! Just FYI. Our main courses were the yellow crab curry and butter chicken. Both dishes came with jasmine rice. They were both bold and delicious in flavor. We also had a delicious side of garlic Naan. Overall this place is not only visually beautiful ! But the service is top notch and their food is delicious.
