Karina, the owner called us the next day to apologize for the incident and invited us back to dinner. We went back last night as it was my friends last day in town. Karina went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and the food was spectacular. We stayed away from the foie and the oysters which she thinks is what made us sick. I think its safe to say that the first incident was uncharacteristic of the dining experience at Niu. Not many owners would handle the situation as graciously as Karina did. WE live in front of the NIU kitchen and we have seen many restaurants closing in this location due to bad food or ambiance. So when NIU opened we were both full of expectation and skepticism... We went for the opening day and OMG, since then we brought all our friends (including catalan friends) to experience the wonderful, original, homemade tasting catalan gastronomy! Small restaurant in downtown Miami that packs BIG flavors! Went for a late lunch midweek; nice ambience and good service. Started with the cold tomato soup with mustard ice cream and manchego pesto. The soup is really a delicate tomato broth -- delicate taste, slightly sweet, perfectly balanced with the punch of the mustard ice cream. For the second course, tried the llamantol -- a delish mix of avocado, egg, lobster and fish roe. Smooth texture, amazing flavor. The roe is the perfect salty touch to the other more subtle elements of this dish. Lastly, had the arros -- a daily rice special. Today's rice featured a mollusc similar to squid in a fishy broth. Very tasty, but not as delish as the earlier two dishes. All in all, great discovery in downtown Miami. read more

Probably the best tapas outside of Barcelona I have ever had. I started with the steak tartar and it was delicious, and not incredibly chewy because they managed to chop it correctly. And the grilled calamari was probably one of my favorite menu items here, it was perfectly cooked as well. The service here is also pretty freaking good, I mean all of my requests were taken care of and I never had to even think to get a refill on my drink. Oh and if you are coming here I think all of their selection of fish is better than the rest of their menu items, so order from that and your palette will be even more satisfied. Of course there is one downside to this place it is very small, the owners should really think about expanding their restaurant so they can have more people there. read more

Just amazingly good and creative tapas. You cannot not love the pan amb tomate, the simple flavors of garlic, bread, olive oil and fresh tomato are so clean and perfectly executed and balanced. The Coca tapa was a surprise- it was beautifully arranged and tasted like a party, salt and acid and crunch and smooth well balanced. The Ous- poached eggs with truffled potato foam and jamon- was super rich and decadent and I couldn't stop eating it. I really enjoyed the food, although a little on the pricey side, well worth the splurge. I highly recommend the savory Ous, perfectly made with runny poached eggs, truffle, potato foam, and jamon. The perfect mixture of flavors literally will blow your mind. I also enjoyed the grilled calamari layered over potato cream and topped with some kind of sauce. Although it was made a little bit salty, the squid was very tender. Before you leave you must order dessert. I had the basil ice cream with mascarpone, topped with berries. Poor Experience - had a great meal with good wine and good friends that came to a very disappointing ending. Our group came in at 8:30 pm and we were asked at 10:30 pm to vacate the table because the restaurant wanted to sit another group. I've been to restaurants in the US, Europe, Spain (yes, Barcelona), Asia, South America, Middle East, etc. - and never have been asked to vacate a table. It's easy to miss, it's a tiny little place sandwiched in between two convenience stores. However, i popped in with a friend for a late lunch at 2:30 on a weekday. My friend had the sausage and egg sandwich, while I had the Xato salad, a mix of frisee, codfish and tuna. My portion was light, but the salad itself was fresh and delicious. Very cute and quaint with very nice ambience. Great for a date. They've maximized the limited space as much as possible. I had high expectations for dinner given everyone had been raving about it. My friend and I shared a great and very reasonably priced bottle of red blend wine from Spain. We also shared the mussels, Llamántol (avocado, mashed egg, lobster and caviar terrine), and the entrecôte. The muscles broth was delicious and they very graciously brought us additional bread to dip in it. The Llamántol was beautifully prepared and a great concept but personally I found it to be bland despite the balsamic reduction and pesto dollops painting the plate. The steak was grilled in the kitchen but when it was brought out they lit a thyme sprig with a match and rubbed the charred sprig on the steak after drenching it into a sweet balsamic reduction. The presentation was very artistic and fun to look at and the flavor of the steak was tasty, however it was very fatty. Make sure you make reservations if you want to go on a weekend evening because they preferred to have a two hour window between seatings to honor guests with reservations. We didn't and felt rushed for the 8pm reservations despite arriving at 6:30 but they did warn us they would need the table by 8. Sure enough the place was slammed by 8 PM and we left after drinking our last sips of wine by 8:15 PM. read more

Generally a place with great potential within close reach. Could be worth 5 stars, but has to be 3 on this first visit. Food is excellent, even if some portions are a bit thin (gambas only come as a set of three, for $15+?). Wine is mediocre for $12 per glass, with most wines requiring bottle purchase. The clams are excellent, amazing sauce. Pa amb tomàquet is great (quality toasted bread), and the pa amb llet is a great dessert. I normally take an extra star for tip suggestions that are based on the after-tax total (incorrect), versus the subtotal (correct, always, doesn't matter how many restaurants try to play this dishonest suggestion game), so I did as well here (will adjust if I see this corrected next time). A slight drag us due to the music: comes over a cheap speaker cluster from above, and bruises the experience with hip-hop on occasion (well out of place). Lastly, the place is Catalan-themed, but not only does anyone hardly speak any Catalan, the owner gave me a hard time (in two ways) for being interested in learning Catalan. That last bit is a real downer if someone found the place largely because they were interested in finding the most Catalan experience in Miami. The owner is nice enough otherwise (but a bit abrasive), and I would say she is actually great at what she does in designing/running the place. Says her husband is Catalan, who may be a botifler, and that may be her politics as well, but she is entitled to that view (she indirectly volunteered the offensive and incorrect suggestion that we might not want to care about Catalonia for being outsiders, not having a direct claim herself, and not realizing the Renaissance-to-modern liberal notion of intellectual immigration, in the traditional of Lafayette or Von Steuben in the American colonies, among others). My rating is unaffected by any botifler disposition on Països Catalans, but is indeed affected by callous botifler norming a negative, unnecessary part of the experience. Should they fix that, the tip math-mooch, music and nudge up the wine quality and/or gambas portion for the price, they're looking at five stars. read more

A hole in the wall type of place that is such a pleasant surprise. This is the type of restaurant where you can tell the food is made with passion. I loved all of the flavors. I especially enjoyed the eggplant and chocolate dessert and the mussels in a wine sauce. To add to the cool vibe the music is amazing with a lot of throwbacks. Not cheap , came out to 40 a person including wine, but I think it was worth it. Coming to this restaurant made me want to do a trip to Spain. read more
