Wanted to try this place for a while and after reading all of the positive reviews, I finally got myself and a friend over there. Between the two of us we ordered 4 different House Tacos. The short rib birria, poblano pepper, pollo verde, and the shrimp with bacon. Greeted with the flight of salsas and was warned about the heat. My friend and I didn't find any of them particularly spicy, the supposed spiciest one smelled and tasted like Worcestershire sauce more than habanero. Tacos arrived stat and I was impressed with the amount of filling on each taco, but unfortunately none of the tacos tasted that good to me. The chicken was overly limed to the point of being sour (and I love fresh lime on my tacos!) the poblano was underwhelming, the birria had a strange sour tasting note similar to the chicken, and the shrimp were over cooked. Obviously they have a huge fan base, and I'm happy for the place to be busy, but just not the flavors we were looking for or expecting. On to our next Taco Adventure! read more

Wow. Just wow. This is a late review for my September 2021 visit but I'm still craving the carne asada tacos and can't keep telling my husband about it until we go again. My sister took me here after she heard about the Michelin recognition. Because of it the restaurant it started taking reservations due to the limit in space for guests. My sister and I went to town (see pictures for reference) the chips and variety of salsa were so good we ran out of chips in the first 10 mins of them being served to us. Embarrassed we asked for more chips lol and again went to town when those came in. Then the tacos came out and man the presentation was impressive totally ig and yelp worthy. Small for their size and kinda pricey but worth every penny. My favorite out of the bunch was carne asada taco. The cheese with it made me order another and I couldn't keep saying wow. I truly could eat here every single day. For every meal the food is amazing everything is a banger. Michelin star recognized and my stoner appetite thinks they deserve the full star! My problem is I want everything all the time and get so indecisive. Between the chips with 4 different salsas at the table (they keep them replenished) and service is phenomenal always making sure we're satisfied and drinks are topped! The first time we went it felt a little intimidating and overwhelming looking at the menu but the next time we went it felt like this was our people and they're happy to greet us now familiar. The suburbs of Sacramento don't attract many foodies, so I had to check out Nixtaco when I heard it made the Michelin Star Guide. The location is very unassuming - Situated a few minutes off the freeway and in a rather uninspiring strip mall. The tacos are well crafted - The style is simple with only a few key ingredients and that approach works well for the Mexican authenticity that they're striving for. The corn tortillas are handmade and high quality, the shrimp was fresh, and the oaxacan cheese was a standout (hard to find in other Mexican restaurants in the area). Fun to mix and match the tacos. 4/5 stars since once I ordered a quesadilla - Toby's style - to go, and that particular dish was underwhelming. It felt a bit greasy and heavy for my taste and was missing some flavoring. I'll only plan on eating in and ordering the tacos in the future. Overall, this tacqueria elevates the Sac food game, and proves a solid choice for a food stop on the way back from Tahoe (which historically lacks in options beyond your Chipotle's and In n Out's). As soon as I heard about this hidden gem taqueria that had very recently been awarded Michelin guide recognition, I knew it was a must-try during my weekend Sacramento trip. The Bib Gourmand distinction recognizes quality restaurants with simpler, authentic styles of cooking at reasonable prices, and Nixtaco checks all the boxes. Their blue corn tortillas are made in house from masa dough that's freshly ground from corn sourced in Oaxaca. To start off, their chips and salsa starter was excellent - it was fun sampling the four varieties (salsa verde, salsa de habanero, peanut chipotle and salsa morada) with each one being so unique. As for the tacos, I was impressed with the variety - we tried the octopus, pork belly, al pastor, nixtaco combo, porky shrimp and rajas con queso (vegetarian), which comprise less than half of their taco selection and were all bomb! The clear standout was the octopus, which had just enough ingredients to dress it up without overwhelming the distinct flavor of the parboiled meat. My second favorite was the porky shrimp on a bed of cheese sauce and refried beans - as delicious as it looks and sounds on the menu! If you're having a tough time deciding between the multitude of options, the nixtaco combo is a few of their signature items together (rajas con queso, shrimp and chicharron) though I personally felt like it had too much going on. With the mixed textures making each bite taste different in a confusing way, I preferred each of these components as their own standalone taco. Minus one star for the service being subpar - I was brought the wrong taco and they had me return it and then go for the remainder of our meal without a replacement. It took a good 10-15 min to get up and track down our server (who was also simultaneously working the bar) to eventually get the correct one. They had a lot of staff members on double duty, but hopefully this is a temporary measure as they grow into their newfound fame. Nonetheless I highly recommend checking out this no longer "hole in the wall" taqueria in Roseville! Can't wait to come back next time that I'm in town to try the rest of their menu, particularly the v intriguing vegan taco combos~ read more

Incredible food! Original we thought about going someplace else because it's like $5 per taco but these are good size tacos and superb culinary. The flavors of everything was amazing, complexed and balanced. Ive had good tacos before but never with these flavor profiles. My favorite tacos were the Pork Belly Taco, Spicy Shrimp, Porky Taco, Short rib taco and carne asada taco. The sopes, spicy potatoes, were also really good. I couldnt stop eating the potatoes. My husband heard this place was one of the Michellin guided restaurants, therefore we decided to try this place out. We came here on a Thursday evening an hour before it closed and we were seated in about 10 minutes without a reservation. It is highly recommended to have a reservation because this place fills up quickly. We tried 5 different tacos: pork belly, carne asada, al pastor, octopus, & short rib barbocoa. We also tried the quesabirria and churro. Overall, all the items were okay and missing a savory taste to it. Service was good and friendly and their online ordering system sped things up. On the way home from Placerville, we stopped here because the website said no take-out, no to go, and reservations required but it was 3pm so we figured we could slide in. We got on a list and we're seated in about 30 mins. We started with the passion fruit margarita and the house chips. The salsas were so different and just knock out good. Most memorable was the peanut and carrot salsas. 15.00 was a bit on the high side for a margarita, but honestly it was perfection. We had the queso dish and six tacos. All were just fabulous. Don't make it up to Roseville very often but have been wanting to try this place for a while now because of all the hype. Happy to say it lived up to the hype!! We wound up just sitting at the bar for a Saturday lunch. Bar staff was friendly and entertaining and we enjoyed the company of the other guests at the counter with us. Good IPA selection and I even got to have a taste of one of their espresso martinis bc the bartender made too much for one of the cocktail orders. I'll definitely be looking to try some cocktails next time I'm in. Complimentary chips (thin, crunchy and salted well) and array of salsas which were all great (albeit, the peanut salsa was very unique and not something I would gravitate towards but surprisingly tasty!) We tried 6 tacos total and the standout star was the "roadkill" pork belly. OH MY GOSH! So good! We almost ordered another but decided we were too full. Also really enjoyed the Al pastor and the salsa verde chicken. The short rib was good but I felt like it could use some sort of salsa or acidity to cut the richness. I can't believe Nixtaco doesn't have 5 stars! I read some of the lower reviews and people are wild, saying crazy shit like the tacos in Cabo are better?! That's hilarious. Nixtaco more than deserves the Michelin star its earned! The atmosphere and decor is minimalist, modern, yet comfortable. The small restaurant and bar buzzes with good energy and although it's loud, it's definitely not too loud. The ordering experience is pretty cool, you just scan the QR code on your table, enter your name and phone number, and begin ordering away! You can place unlimited orders and it all just gets added to your total tab. If you're a larger group, it's best to communicate with your table and make sure you're ordering in bunches (ie order your first round of drinks & maybe some appetizers, then order again with your entrees, order a third time for more drinks, etc). Right away when you're seated you're served with house made chips and their 4 salsas ranging from mild (a green one) to spicy (a smoky dark red salsa) including a smoky salsa made with peanuts. All of their salsas have great depth of flavor and only the spiciest one is spicy in my opinion. Their guacamole is absolutely delicious, super creamy and balanced with other ingredients. Their tacos are on another level! Their house made corn tortillas are half yellow corn and half blue corn, so soft and flavorful with just the right thickness to hold the delicious fillings. I've tried the octopus, Al pastor, shrimp Mazatlan style, and mushroom tacos and all are absolutely mouthwatering. The octopus is unbelievably tender and flavorful- definitely the best octopus I've ever had! The Al pastor is so tasty, the perfect combo of savory greasy and sweet with pineapple. The shrimp Mazatlan style is really creamy and decadent with perfectly plump and juicy shrimp cooked to perfection. The mushroom tacos are flavorful and the mushrooms are cooked well also with creamy fresh avocado slices and micro cilantro on top. Lastly, I've tried their churros which are heavenly! They couldn't pack on anymore cinnamon and sugar if they tried and the churros themselves were perfectly fried soft and pillowy on the inside with a crunch on the outside. To top it all off, the churros are dipped in chocolate sauce - absolute yum! I've dined in with and without reservations and ordered for pickup and each experience has been consistent and delicious. Be prepared to wait if you don't have a reservation, and maybe even a bit if we do have a reservation, but no matter what it's gonna be worth the wait! read more

The spicy shrimp taco ($6ea) was good, with tender shrimp, ok flavor, not spicy at all, but the cheese made the whole taco an oily mess. The shrimp matzalan ($4.50) w bacon was meh... wouldn't get it again. Had 4 large shrimps but the flavor was bland and boring. The corn quesadilla ($2.50) was meh... again very oily and hard to eat. Something you could easily make at home... wouldn't get again. The corn tortillas were good. Service: 1.5 stars with use of Toast, there's barely any service. We got our water, chips + salsa, and someone came around asking if we needed refills. Initially someone came by and we were able to ask questions about the menu, but then we were left to our own to order and pay... Our seats were also dirty, so husband left w a salsa stain on his khaki shorts. Lastly, they didn't have fried chicken quesadilla even though we were there first thing in the morning... but we had already paid via the app and then were told they'd void it out, but actually still charged and had to go up to ask for a refund. Very sad we had to tip beforehand bc after the refund, we ended up tipping 22% and... no, definitely not worth even a 15% tip. I understand they are short staffed, though with the tight labor market, so keep that in mind. Price: would say overall it's a bit overpriced... Nixtaco is like Chipotle, but fancier. At least it thinks it's fancier. It charges fancy prices ($6 to $7 for a street taco and $17 for a burrito), but those prices don't lead to quality, at least on the food I got. The flight of salsa at the very beginning was nice, and I enjoyed the chipotle and the habanero salsas. The service was prompt and refilled chips and drinks, so we were off to a good start. I read several reviews on how good the carne asada was. I got it. It wasn't that good. They use hanger steak, which is more flavorful, but gets really tough if overcooked... And mine was over cooked. I had a whole burrito full of chewy hanger steak. I tried the carnitas taco next. It says it's smoked pork shoulder served carnitas style. There was no doubt it was smoked. I like smoked meats. This was overboard. It was all I could taste. It wasn't the gross, tastes like an ashtray kind of smoke thankfully, it was just overpowering. I'm glad I didn't get this in the burrito. Finally I also tried the spicy potatoes. They were very boring. They weren't spiced so much as they were tangy and vinegary? I'm not sure what was going on with them. I passed them around the table and nobody got spicy, everybody got vinegar. So I wouldn't get these again. Many other people in my party enjoyed their food, but they got the "nontraditional proteins". I guess I was looking for some tasty Mexican food, but nixtaco is more Mexican food adjacent. Amongst his galaxy of colorful off-handed comments, Anthony Bourdaine once famously said, "I've seen zero evidence of any nation on Earth other than Mexico even remotely having the slightest clue what Mexican food is about or even come close to reproducing it," and it's true. I was seriously deprived of Mexican food, having grown up in Hawaii. And now that I know Mexican food I still find there's always this strange omission of flavors. Unless you're seeking out late-night taco trucks or digging deep for authentic recipes and cooking it yourself... You won't find those flavors. But tucked away in Roseville, just north of Sacramento, is this very modest taqueria that's getting some serious national attention. Owner Patricia Wise doesn't think there's anything inherently revolutionary or mystical about Nixtaco's famous tacos. In her words, "It's just properly made with good ingredients and a lot of care". It's this confidence and love that's earned so many local establishments the acclaimed and highly sought after Michelin Bib Gourmand award in recent times-- one which Nixtaco is absolutely on its way to winning. Now, let's talk food. First impression of Nixtaco was... bumping. It was 11:30 am and a full house. Nothing screams 'check me out' like a line out the door and a ton of smiles. And it's not just the Cadillac Margarita that's got guests loose-- it's an epic complementary platter of homemade salsas and crunchy-salty tortilla chips to start the experience. Four salsas with different heat levels from mild tomatillo and green chile to punch-you-in-the-face habanero. Then there's the almost instantly delivered half-sheet trays decked in tacos. Tacos for days. They're dangerously tasty and the beauty here is you don't have to fret-- if you feel you didn't order enough, all you have to do is think about tacos and the next round is at your table. I naturally ordered the Pork Al Pastor blue corn tortilla tacos which were, forgive me, ambrosia. Yes, angelic. These tacos changed me. Marriage, having children and eating these tacos have been highlights in my life. Pork shoulder that's been gently marinated in traditional Al Pastor adobo which is a fragrant cocktail of smokey dried chiles and achiote paste; famously tinted bright red from annatto. These little pups were finished with grilled pineapple, white onion and micro cilantro. Simple but powerful. This set of tacos were not only exciting to my tastebuds, both in acidity and salt-level but somehow balanced and light. Perfectly accompanied by my intensely strong Cadillac Margarita. This Michelin guide taqueria makes outstanding tacos encased in crispy caramelized oaxaca cheese and house-made blue corn tortillas. Their salsas are superb too. One issue we had with the food is that the tacos were not consistent. My favorite taco was the rajas con queso so I ordered another - however it came out COMPLETELY different - flavorless with barely any cheese. That was super weird to me and we told the hostess who apologized for it and let us take it off the bill. Good thing we were able to make a reservation for two day-of on a Saturday because it was packed when we got there around 6:30pm! read more

They are super busy due to their new fame status as a stellar Mexican restaurant in the area. This means the wait time is crazy long. Luckily the estimated time they give you through text is shockingly accurate.I would say call before to make a reservation but they are so busy that they barely answer their phone. A big downside is that there is currently no takeout ordering due to how busy they are. The location is alright. It's far from where I live and is tucked away in the farthest corner of Roseville that you could possibly find. It's nearby some other businesses and a high school. The parking lot is small and cramped. The ambiance inside is great. It's moderately loud and you can hear the food being made. There is authentic music playing in the restaurant. There is the constant sound of the door opening for new people waiting to be put on the wait list. The plates are made of this metal substance which is cool. The service is phenomenal. Our server was kind and friendly, he even gave us a couple of insider recommendations. I think the fact that you can order and pay through an online website is cool but the only downside is that it "kicks" you out of your order after about half an hour and you have to physically wait in the long line to close out your tab (otherwise you get charged an extra 20%). The menu is vast and expansive. They have tons of tacos, burritos, and plates. They have a lot of vegan and vegetarian options available too! The food came out fast. The rice is pretty good, it has a heavy chicken bouillon flavor and is nicely salted. It was cooked wonderfully and isn't too mushy or too hard. The complimentary chips were awesome and the salsas they had were *chefs kiss* . The tacos, oh the tacos. I liked the avocado taco the best because it was nice and creamy. The potato tacos were a close second but still had a great flavor. I was a little disappointed in the cauliflower tacos since everyone was hyping them up. I found them to be a little dry. They are not those mini tacos, they are average tortillas size which is nice. The tortillas were the best part of the meal. They tasted like buttered corn but weren't like your regular tortillas. I particularly liked how they were made of blue corn and made them dark. You can really taste the love that went into the hand made tortillas. Someone else said they didn't like how thick they were but that's exactly why I liked them! Thicker tortillas mean the tacos won't break while eating, plus I just like tortilla The prices were pretty steep. At around ~$5 a taco, you are breaking the bank coming here ($$$$). You can expect to walk out for around $40 for a meal for two. Fortunately, the flavor certainly makes up for the prices and then some. It surprised me how filling those tacos were. Overall a solid experience. Nix attempts to bring haute taco cuisine to the taco truck experience and I was specifically looking for "how" they would accomplish this and at the same time differentiate from not only the taco trucks, but some competitors in the same area that are restaurant based. We have been customers of Nix prior to their Michelin award in 2021. Prior to the award, we wondered if the restaurant would be viable because they are doing some fundamental things differently and in a way that we appreciated but at the same time, is it really worth $75 for two people to eat tacos? The answer is mixed. First if you are coming here for just tacos then you are likely to be disappointed because you are thinking through a "value" lens that inherits the moniker that tacos are cheap street food that taste great. Well, considering that Jack in the box serves tacos, it isn't a great reference point to start with. Yes you can get tacos for far cheaper than you can at Nic but that is not the point. You can also get a hamburger (kinda) at Jack in the box but that isn't the point either. The question you need to answer is "why" you would want to eat at Nix. Is it because they have the whole Michelin thing? Is it because it is difficult to get a table without reservations? Is it because it is popular now and riding the crest of the wave? If you answered yes to those questions, you probably are going to not enjoy or value your meal. For me, the reason I go to Nix and why I started to go to Nix is because they serve some really authentic tacos. You might find a better asada taco somewhere, but you will not find the variety of options executed as well. The quality is top notch. In fact, for Roseville/Sacramento I say their menu is hard to beat insofar as quality and variety is concerned. They start with chips and 4 salsas, each having a distinct taste as well as spice. Well done and I have to say, this beats the normal option/s of a bowl of salsa served with cold stale chips which is more of the norm at other establishments. I also like that I don't have to compete with a line of people at a salsa bar, wondering if the options are fresh, kept at the proper temperature, or for that matter, what they actually are. Instead you have a server describe exactly what you are receiving. And...the corn chips are served hot and delightfully light and crispy. The food also is somewhat fused. I had a combo burrito and it was quite tasty. I enjoyed the fact that I could make out the contents and it wasn't simply overwhelmed by some sauce that hides bland contents. Others at our table had a variety of items to include different tacos and a quesadilla. We all commented positively about our plates- common themes were that the food was quite tasty, fresh, and served hot. We finished the meal with churros.... I did not order them as I have come to conclude that despite how delicious a churro might appear, they have always been a giant disappointment. Either they are tough, too chewy, cold, or quite frankly, in my opinion, a product of a distributor that sends these things to all the churro menus across the land. Was I in for a shock! The churro came and I have to say it was by and far the best churro I have ever had. I would go back simply for these alone. They are served on a plate with caramel and man, they nailed it. If you go to Nix, you need to full send some churros! Our servers were great, and overall the experience was great. We enjoyed the ordering system, as it was easy to navigate, order exactly what we wanted and how we wanted it prepared, and then paying was quite easy. Another nice feature. Getting back into the cuisine triangle of culinary excellence (service/establishment, food, value) I had to deduct one star because the details that one would expect to be on par with the cost of the meal were not there. These are nit picky items and easily fixed, and for $75 for two people to eat, I would expect some of these details to be better managed. First, the serving plates are dated a bit and reminded me of camping gear. The same for the salsa holders. They were worn. Napkins were basically half napkins and really were not as useful as a standard Dixie brand napkin would be. Finally, the drinks were quite tasty but for $15 I expected something more than about 6 oz of beverage. If the burrito was just a bit bigger, I am not talking about the atrocity that comes out of the franchise burrito factory chipotle, but something perhaps bigger than 10" for $16- that's more than a $1 an inch.
