First I will start with what was good…read more 1. The dye job ended up beautiful. I came in with pretty unclear instructions and reference photos and both the stylist and the owner were able to figure out what fit my needs. This seems to be a huge strength here. 2. They were able to fit me in last minute. What was bad 1. The total time listed online was 1.45 hours, the service ended up taking 2.45 hours. I have been to many salons and never had my hair take that long, especially when I was getting all over color and a blowout (no haircut). Perhaps this was due to me booking last minute. However, the website booking made it look wide open and I think it is the responsibility of the salon to accurately represent their booking capability. I would not have booked with them had I known what experience was to follow. 2. The salon overall seemed overbooked and people were bouncing around. Three different people worked on my hair. Personally, I really didn't like this set up. I like to build a relationship with my stylist and this hectic atmosphere was not synonymous with that 3. The blowout I had was so uncomfortable. The rollers were tangled up in my hair and I could feel it ripping out as the stylist took them out. I have never have a blowout be so painful. My hair had so many split ends after I looked in the mirror at home. 4. My hair fell the moment I stepped outside. Granted it was a windy day, but my hair doesn't typically fall that fast. I think this may have been due to the stylist rushing at the end. On one hand I'm glad she did because I had been sitting alone for quite some time, but on the other hand I paid for essentially nothing. My old stylist back home (moved cross country) had no problem giving me a blowout that lasted at least a few hours. Even on windy days. 5. At one point the owner took my stylist in the back and seemed to be scolding her. This is never something a new client wants to see. I immediately felt anxious that something had gone wrong with my hair color. It ended up great but tbh experience was awkward and handled strangely in my opinion. 6. Finally. The price came out to $260 for all over color and a blowout. I wouldn't mind this price if it wasn't for the lackluster experience. Hair salons are charging luxury prices without offering luxury experiences. The pricing structure is also strange. They charge $60 extra for toner but I have never had a color job that didn't need toner to look good. It feels strange to not include it all together. The toner charge was added after which was a surprise because toner has always been included in the price. To be clear, the website did ask if I wanted to add toner for $60. I thought that was for someone coming in looking just to tone and not add more color. Perhaps this was my mistake but I found the whole pricing structure strange. A few other things to note: water was offered but never given and they only accept cash/zelle/venmo tips. Overall this salon was not a fit for me. A lot of this is subjective preference but I think it's important that people understand what environment they are paying for when they sign up to spend hundreds. That being said, the color was beautiful and I am grateful for that.

What disappointed me most was not only the result, but the way my concerns were handled afterward. Instead of taking responsibility for the result and trying to understand why I was unhappy, the stylist repeatedly shifted the conversation toward blaming me. I was made to feel that the problem was somehow related to my language barrier and cultural differences in communication. At one point, the conversation even became about money and what I had paid for -- essentially, "You didn't pay for the whole highlight, right?" -- which felt completely inappropriate and shaming. I have never experienced this level of disrespect or lack of accountability in a beauty salon. I left feeling sad, embarrassed, and unwelcome, when I had simply come in expecting professional service and to be heard as a client. I want to be clear that I don't believe this experience represents the values of the entire salon or its owners. My issue is specifically with this individual stylist and the way he handled a situation when the result did not meet my expectations. I am sharing this so other women, especially those who may have a language or cultural communication difference, know to make sure their concerns are genuinely listened to and treated respectfully. A client should never be made to feel guilty or ashamed for expressing disappointment with a service.

To begin, I came to the salon with a very bad highlight/ balayage hair that was done in another salon. I had to get my hair fix and when I found this salon on yelp and saw all the pictures and reviews I knew I had to come to this salon and get my hair done by Sam. Getting an appointment was as easy as 1-2-3. I came to the salon a couple of mins before my appointment, I was greeted by the front desk and was able to get situated right away. The salon staff is mostly not fluent in English but it was not a hurdle to communicating with them because another individual was able to translate it to me. I showed them my horrible hair. After a couple of mins of sam looking through it, he knew what to do right away! He even gave me a haircut to fit the hair style better! I showed him the picture of what I want my final hair to be, I wanted a gray-brown balayage/ombre. He then asked me if I want to either bleach my whole hair or color it back to a dark brown close to my original hair color to fix my horrible hair. I loved that he asked me beforehand and gave me options before doing anything drastic!! :) So the whole process was to color my hair back to brown (fix my hair) to bleaching to color again took around 6 hours long. Even though it took that long Sam was very very detail and meticulous when it comes to balayanging and coloring hair. He was very patient and nice because the process to fix and achieve what I wanted was very time-consuming!! The staff of the salon was very nice and does their work very well and treats their costumers very nicely! To conclude, my experience in the salon was great and amazing! Sam is a real perfectionist, he inspected every single part and section of my hair and fix it until it was perfect!! He even styled it after and gave me gorgeous loose curls. Sitting down for 6 hours was not fun but it was well worth it! the price was very reasonable for all the things that Sam had to do for my hair. Came in the salon desperately wanting to fix my hair and came out happy and overjoyed! I finally found a salon and stylist to trust! NO 1 will be my go to salon! :) read more

This review is a couple weeks late, but better late then never! Sam works 5 star miracles! The short story - I got a cut and bayalage color by Sam and I've been rocking fabulousness ever since. Go get your hair done at No 1 Salon with Sam! The long story - I have very thick straight asian hair and was looking to get that fabulous looking bayalage style hair I see so often on those instagram girls. I came across No1 Salon on Yelp. I had screenshot multiple photos of the hair color scheme I wanted. I showed them to Sam. He quoted me a price and time - $200 and 4-5 hours. The cost was a bit more expensive then I thought it would be, but because my hair required two processes it was appropriate. I came in with dark brown hair and the bayalage I wanted was an ash blonde so my hair needed to be bleached (with Olaplex - the best in the market!) and then colored. For those that have never bayalaged their hair, have long hair, or coming in with already colored hair, plan a whole day being at the salon - beauty takes time :)! My hair took 5-6 hours (thank goodness for the ParkChicago app. For those that don't have it - highly suggest!). I was offered water and was asked if I wanted to order food - the staff there is helpful, nice and accommodating. I went to get a haircut with my husband yesterday (Sunday 10/13 around 2pm). and didn't have a preference of hairdressers. They gave me someone who's a fat guy with glasses. I clearly told him I want straight cut, keep the original hairstyle just shorten the length. I couldn't imagine anything easier than that... yet he still fucked up. He went ahead and cut it with shorter lengths outside with longer inside without notifying me, just because he think that looks better.... When I told him he got me the wrong look, he even said something about my head looks weird so it doesn't look good. What an offensive comment. I still gave him $5 tip but I was pissed the whole day so I had to give a bad review. 一个较胖的戴眼镜的小哥剪的头，我清楚的跟他讲了我要"一刀切"，保留我本来的发型，因为我本来就是一刀切，只需要剪短一点。这简单到不能再简单的要求了吧？我就闭眼休息了，剪完我睁眼一看，看起来像上世纪90年代的发型....土到极致！！！为啥？因为他没按我要求，自己发挥去了，他把我外面头发都修短了，这叫一刀切吗？！关键是我跟他说了，他居然还狡辩，你当我傻还是眼瞎？我拿起头发给他看，外面几层完全被剪短，他说，对啊我修了一下层次。谁让他修层次了？！中文都听不懂吗？最后他还说我的头是尖的....真是极其带有侮辱性我居然还是给了$5块小费，回家怎么都想不通。$5我随便扔大街上我一点儿都不会介意，但是还要给他我真的后悔了。这家店以前技术挺好的，后来引进一些人，素质很差。说话各种冒犯人，都不懂美国文化的。上来先是各种评价你的头或者发量发质如何不好，非常没礼貌，不说话没人当你是哑巴。 read more

Michael is beyond amazing, he's been my go-to hair stylist for over 4 years. He is very skilled and patient. I have thicker hair that needs a lot of layers in order to look natural and Michael always spends the time to thin my hair with great result. Before I found Michael, I went to many different hair salons spending over $60 at least for a simple hair cut and non of those hair stylists would spend the time nor had the skills to cut my hair the way Michael did. You can tell whether a hair-stylist is skilled by looking at what kind of scissors they use and the amount of time they are willing to spend on you. In my experience, those who didn't have much experience or maybe too lazy to spend the time to give you a good hair cut, would use one of those "thinning scissors"...one cut here and one cut there suddenly you're all set....really? But Michael doesn't cut corners, he uses his scissors to thin and layer my hair section by section, little by little and the end result is great! That's what a call a good hair-stylist! read more

I heard about this place through my cousin and she took me to Sam for a hair cut/dye. He was amazing!!! We came at around 7pm and hair dye would take about 6 hours, but they still took me in. I felt so bad, but I did leave him a big tip. He took his time and painted every stripe of hair. Also, the color I requested (rose gold) was hard to get, but he mix the right colors together and got what I want. I really love how he gave depths and volume to my hair. At the end the result was breathless and I can't believed how soft my hair was. I can't expressed how thankful to find this salon and Sam, the god of hair color. I contacted Michael (stylist) through Instagram and set up an appointment for a balayage and haircut. He was very kind and helpful throughout the long process (approximately 6 hours, but I have long hair!). Michael was great at getting the exact cool-toned blonde color I wanted, which is not always easy to accomplish on Asian hair. I had no problems communicating with him what I wanted either! My daughter and I have been here several times. We drive in from Darien, that's how much we like getting our hair cuts here. Michael just cut my hair for the second time. He is very precise in cutting and takes his time to give you exactly what you ask for. I'm loving my hair and thrilled to have found someone to stick with. I got my hair done by KION again and he went above and beyond my expectations! I was seated right away, he listens to what I wanted, and delivered! I will always go to him for hair cuts, balayage, perm, etc. My hair feels great even after two rounds of bleach. I am so obsessed! He took his time and I cannot recommend him enough!! Went to Kion twice, the first time for a single color, and the second time for my balayage. He did such an amazing job getting my virgin hair that light and to such a good color in just one session! Leo is so super detailed! He saved me from my tragically "balayaged" brassy hair to ash gray in ONE session! It's true ladies. He really treats every session like it's art. Pros: Been here twice already and serviced by Kian. He's meticulous and friendly and has excellent skills. This place is great. I brought my girlfriend here too and she liked it. $27 for guys and $42 for girls. For improvement: make sure the people doing the hair wash are friendly and nice too. Twice, they seemed quite unfriendly and the wash wasn't as nice as compared to elsewhere. Still five stars. read more

Sam did a 7hour ombre for me today, and I absolutely love it!! Like everyone else has said, he was so patient and detailed and the results really speak for themselves. I told him I wanted some shade of purple, and came out with a beautiful blend of deep purple, blue and magenta. I went here for the first time recently and got a haircut! I forgot who I had but he did a great job cutting and styling! I also got balayage with Michael (@michael_hairstylist on IG). He was super kind and even explained the process for me. I had to get hair bleached twice since it was thick and very dark. The process was around 8 hours, and the cost was $350. I would like to recommend Michael at the No. 1 Salon. At the end of the day, the result of your hair is what matters and Michael has always done a great job. To my understanding, he has several years of experience cutting hair and those experiences do show at the end of the day. I would advise to make an appointment with him beforehand as he might be busy. read more

I wanted to keep as much length as possible but, since my hair was so damaged at the ends, she had to cut off about two to three inches. She and the rest of the staff were very nice! I was seated at 2:30 pm and left at 7 pm. It was a long process but very worth it! I felt like Yuniki was taking care to make sure my hair turned out correctly and I really appreciated it. Unfortunately, this time the haircut felt very rushed. The layers were not evenly aligned, and my hair was not properly flat-ironed or finished the way I expected. I was hoping for the same level of quality and attention to detail I received last year, but unfortunately the result was not what I expected. I still gave a tip, but I was disappointed with the overall service this time. Because of this experience, I'll probably look for a different salon for my next appointment. I hope they take more time with their clients and pay closer attention to the details of the haircut and finishing.

When he couldn't get the haircut to look right, he just kept cutting and thinning it more and more, then curling and styling it to try to make it look good. It was chaotic. It felt like he was panicking and continuing to cut in hopes that eventually the style would work. He made my already-fine hair incredibly thin. I can no longer style or curl it the way I used to, and it will take a very long time to grow back. A refund cannot repair that or give me back the hair that was unnecessarily removed. I found Eric through TikTok, and unfortunately, my experience was nothing like what I expected from his videos. I'm devastated and wish I had never trusted him with my hair.
