I've lived on Nob HIll for the past 4 years, and this cavernous place is stocked with just about anything you'd need regarding hardware, wood, hand trucks, and even kitchen and household supply. Mircea is very nice and unassuming and helpful to find anything you want. Prices are very reasonable, too. I also returned something which I removed out of the package, which I said I didn't like, and Mircea allowed me to return it for a full refund without asking any questions--how many small independent businesses do that these days? Also, when I needed a tool early in the morning, the place opens at 8:30 am, and as I was walking up, Mircea was there 8:30 sharp opening the door, helped me find my tool and I was on my way. read more

Dropped in the other day while in the area. I was very impressed with the inventory.....They have just about anything and everything a hardware store can have (except sheetrock and major building supplies) Somehow they manage to keep it clean and not cluttered with all this. They really need to open on time. Though their Yelp listing shows the store as opening @ 9:30 AM on Fridays, twice I've gone there to retrieve a UPS and had to wait until 10 AM for the owner to show up. This morning 4 customers walked away because the store was still closed. read more

Not only did the man there help me save tons of money by not hiring a plumber, he lent me his closet auger even though I could have bought one from him for 40 bucks. This place is great! If you live in the area, you'll be glad this place exists. It's got all the "house stuff" you might need in a pinch for city livin'. Maybe not as well-stocked as Home Depot or Target... But, then, it's not Home Depot or Target. And it's right here. In the neighborhood. What more can you ask for? The staff is helpful and nice. They even let me borrow their power drill for an apartment-improvement project. Other than hardware-type things, they also sell assorted random things like house wares, cooking utensils, pet supply stuff, etc. Pretty much anything you might need for the "house", there's a good chance they might have something that'll work. This is the BEST hardware store I know. (1) The people who work there are exceptionally helpful, knowledgeable and courteous; (2) They have an amazingly broad selection of items. I have never NOT found a needed item in stock; and (3) the prices are very reasonable. I recently bought an air purifier there but first researched options and prices online. Nob Hill had a good range of options and prices and the price for the one I bought was lower than that listed by Amazon. I'm also glad to shop local and support them - and my community. A nut fell off of my wheelchair wheel and needed replacement urgently. I went in to get a replacement. Not only did they find it for me, they put it on for me, which I didn't expect at all! Every time the CVS across the street fell short, Nob Hill Hardware came through. Everything from 25w light bulbs, replacement feet for stools (multiple sizes), air freshener, foil and clipboards. After I got some rugged cuts from some other hardware stores (chain and local), I finally jumped into this place with pieces of wood and a bit of hesitation, because I didn't know if they provide a cutting service. As I knew that they are great, their cuts as well were clean and BEAUTIFUL! And it took only 5 minutes and costed only $3 for 6 cuts! I love you, Nob Hill Hardware. The owners are really helpful - I often walk in with no idea what I need and just describe the problem I'm trying to fix and they quickly offer solutions and different options. In a culture where standard practice takes me to google for answers, it's refreshing to talk to an expert, face to face. The owner of Nob Hill Hardware might be the nicest guy in SF. He is unlike a lot of typical handymen working at hardware stores in that he lacks any sort of pretentious, know-it-all attitude, but still knows what he's doing and does whatever he can to help, even if it means him getting less money. Before I discovered Nob Hill Hardware, I went to Brownies on Polk to get some pegs for a shelf that collapsed in our apartment. When I showed the employee the piece that I needed, he laughed and said that those hadn't been made since the 70s, and that I needed to go home, go online, find out what company this little piece of plastic was, and order it straight from them. No Help. I went to Nob Hill and before I could even explain what I needed, he led me to the back, and gave me some pegs for $1.99. Also, I traded him my expired student I.D. and $5 to borrow his power drill and he told me not to stress about it and just bring it back when I was finished. read more

This hardware store is amazing. And by that I mean the owner is soooo helpful and definitely knows his stuff. He helped me figure out how to rig my countertop dishwasher so I wouldn't have to hook it into the sink every time. I've been to this store in the past and they have good prices and an ok selection, but today I went in for paint. I will not be coming back. The man there, I think he's the owner, was rude. I wanted to match a paint sample, and I understand it won't be matched exactly (unless I went to a bigger place like Lowe's) but this guy was so condescending and angry. He told me it wouldn't match exactly and he took me back to the paints and took my chip and was trying to match to the can. They don't even have paint sample cards? No mixer? I started to ask about this and he said "AS I TOLD YOU BEFORE, IT WON'T BE AN EXACT MATCH." Completely rude and so angry. No thank you. I won't be spoken to that way. I snatched my sample out of his hand and left. I went to Brownie's, who DO have paint sample cards and who DO have a mixer. I came away with a match which I'm very happy with. I bought all of my painting supplies at Brownie's too. Brownie's got $48 and Nob Hill Hardware got $0. I know it's not much in the scheme of things, but a customer is a customer and should be treated as such. I felt like I was being scolded for asking a simple question at Nob Hill Hardware, whereas Brownie's was happy to answer my questions. read more

Nice people, good assortment of goods, and convenient location for those living in Nob Hill. However, it looks like from previous reviews that they have a tendency to not open at the time posted on their website and on Yelp (8:30am). Same thing happened to me. Got there at 8:25, and the owner shows up after 9:30 (also, no hours posted in the window). I told him about the situation and he started blaming yelp and google for posting the wrong hours. He even said the nob hill hardware website wasn't his. No apology for any misunderstanding or inconvenience at all. He just got defensive. Since they are also a UPS access point, their tardiness and inconsistent schedule is extremely inconvenient and inconsiderate for customers. read more

Came to this place only after going to Brownies Hardware on Polk and finding out that the halogen lightbulb I was looking to replace was inconsistently longer than normal. Brownies took the time to look into this and even made some phone calls to find another hardware store that could help me out...however the one they recommended was out of walking distance, so I decided to walk up the street to this place, I tried to explain my situation to him...this guy wouldn't listen, he kept interrupting me and telling me I was wrong....his condescending tone pissed me off yet I still bought the damn bulb. As soon as I stepped out of the store I opened the lighbulb to compare and sure enough I was right. Walked right back in and showed it to him and he still didn't believe me. It's hard to recommend this place. I can't complain at all about customer service, being attentive and kind. BUT the quality of their products are on the low side. They usually have several alternatives for everything in a wide cost-range, but the most expensive is way more expensive than other places and all the cheap ones have lasted only for one-hour use. Great customer service. Very eager to help you find your loot. I haven't yet had a complex plumbing or electrical task (I rent), but as far as buying your regular light handy-man things (hooks, screws, baby proofing, ladder, numerous other tools), this place has been a life-saver. Seems to cater more to convenience "up the hill" away from Brownies, but it still offers numerous doohickeys for electrical, painting, and plumbing projects that are beyond my expertise and willingness to undertake at the risk of a flood or electric shock. He will always help you out, find what you need, tell you if you can get a cheaper option that will still do the job you want. I signed up on yelp just to write this review. I've only been twice, but the customer service was spectacular. The first time I went, I had a squeaky bed, which is incredibly annoying. The guy who works there diagnosed the problem with me and gave me a lubricant that A) fixed the problem and B) won't destroy the metal or the wood in the frame of my bed. The second time, I lost a screw off the fender of my bike. So I removed the screw from the other fender and took it in to find a match. There are hundreds of types of screws all of different sizes, but the guy working there immediately asked if I needed help and took about 30 seconds to find exactly what I needed out of a hundred thousand screws. In the end it cost me a buck, so I figured the least I could do was write a good review for all the time it saved me. read more
