Finally fell from all the hoopla praising Nobby's as the burger place to beat. Specially their skirt technique, which definitely is not recommended for their double burger, unless more cheese is utilized. Big it was for under $10, but with all the makings is good enough to fill just about any hungry person. As to the the overall quality, not quantity, fairly good. Wouldn't come back any time soon knowing other places are equal or better. 3.5 Stars. Fries, at $3.49 for the small. Praises got me to try them, and frankly nothing above the fierce competition regarding fries. Even their catsup was praised, but really no marked difference. 3 Stars. But what just prompted this review was the side of garlic sauce I tried tonight. Sooo bomb. A small spot, in a small town, serving big flavor. And delicious burgers. Found myself pulling in here one afternoon while working in Chico for the day. There were only a few folks inside when we arrived (that's all it can hold, literally) but by the time we left the line was making it's way out the door. You walk in, step forward about ten feet, order at a small counter with a register and they cook your burger in an even smaller kitchen right behind the register. There's a few tables on each side and the line forms down the center and goes right out the door. There's a few tables outside and a cool summer breeze (this just reminded me of that Seals and Crofts song - summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind). Anyhow, there's no frills with fancy exotic decor here so leave those kind of expectations in the trunk. The burger was put in front of me, large and in charge with these cute little white buns, and cheesy skirt like this one place I know in Sacramento. Fresh produce-check, delicious little strips of greasy bacon all curled up like my Yorkie in the sheets at 7:15am-check, a mouthful of great hamburger every time I put this thing in my face-check. Prices were good, and average, these days. About ten bucks or so for my bacon cheeseburger, fries and a diet soda pop. I walked out of here happy to have found the place but upset that I ate too much. Luckily I'll be in town again next week so I'll be returning for more gluttony of meat and buns. read more

I went here on a Friday (yesterday, to be exact), around noon after getting off of work early. The line was almost out the door, so I figured it had to be good. I waited a few minutes to get to the front of the line. I ordered the Nobby burger with everything, added cheese (I wanted to try the famous cheese skirt), and a small order of fries. I ordered to go and waited maybe 15 minutes for my order. Once I got home, I eagerly opened the bag. The portion of fries was huge, but the fries themselves were nothing special. (I still ate most of them). The burger bun was nice and shiny, but not overly greasy. I like that it was toasted...made all the difference. However, I was totally bummed when I saw the cheese skirt. It was completely dry, not black but effectively burnt. Not a drop of moisture left, like a parmesan frico baked way too long. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be like that, so I tasted it, and it was bitter. I broke off the whole cheese skirt because it would have otherwise ruined a pretty solid burger. I would have waited a few more minutes for a skirt done right (had I actually eaten in and discovered it on-site), especially since I paid extra for the cheese. When I cook for clients, if it's not done right, I toss it and start over, because they deserve better. read more

The beer battered onion rings were light & crispy. The fries were tasty. Let me tell you, that burger was heaven! The fresh bun, the perfectly cooked patty, the crisp lettuce and the sweet onions were all fantastic!!!! The winner though, was the cheese! Crispy, gooey and perfect! Hard to find a place in here to eat, and this burger is best fresh (and so are the fries/ onion rings), as opposed to driving all the way back across town to eat it at home. Nobby's is a killer burger joint. there really is nothing they do wrong here. portions are huge (and you can add more meat if you want, fatty), lots of variations possible with the addition of cheese, bacon, grilled o's, anaheim chilés and the like. as i'm sure other people have noted, you can get your cheese "fried". yes that's right, in case you want to double your eating enjoyment, they will fry your cheese on the flat top, giving it an extra cooked crunch that can be hard to find at other burger spots. they could definitely stand to expand their operation. this may be the way Ms. Nobby likes it, but the place is always busy, and it doesn't take more than a few dozen people to fill the tables. that goes to show that it's worth fighting the crowd, i doubt any other place in town can give them competition when you're looking for some ground cow. it is definitely a family favorite, my brother makes sure to visit regularly, and i make it a point to stop by every time i'm in town for a visit, he never has any objections. read more

In my opinion the quality of the bun can make or break a burger; in this case the bun elevates this burger from a two star to a three star. It was delicious soft and piping hot. Nonetheless there's something missing here, something nearly undefinable. The ingredients are quality, the staff is friendly. The food takes a little while to arrive but every order is cooked fresh, so that's not unreasonable. If nothing else, I have to go with what has been said in other reviews: there is nothing particularly signature about this place, other than its history and reputation in Chico. It's good, but not great. There needs to be something signature, something to elevate Nobby's above the background noise of burger joints and pub food in a California college town. Tacos Tijuana is directly across the street; barring any seismic changes in Nobby's menu, I think I'll go there next time. read more

I ordered the double burger and made sure it was going to have a cheese skirt. I got my burger and boom, where is the cheese skirt? I only had two pieces of cheese that were small with just a little crispness on the side. The bun was good and meat was good. But at the end it was a normal diner burger. It was so good that I wouldn't mind having to go through Chico again just to get a locally sourced burger and avoid my usual go to In & Out or Five Guys. This place is small with limited seating but that didn't stop the kitchen crew from whipping up a great tasting bacon cheese burger and fries in short order. I rarely give five stars, but here, if you're in the area - go see if it lives up to my review.
