This was my first visit to Nonis. I will tell you this. As soon as you step inside. You have just went through a time warp to the past. You hear a hello! How are you? This place is the best! This is an old school look and feel. The staff here (Ruthy and company) treat you like family. Would you like to try our homemade hot sauce to go with your meal? This review it's overdue about 20+ years! My son is now an adult and loves to Nonis. He knows Ruth's it's her name but she has always respondes to him when he calls her "Nonis". I find it interesting that people who typically give a restaurant one or two stars are consistent across every review of every restaurant they go to. Go look at some of the profiles of some of these people and read their enlightened opinions. Apparently the only person that's ever cooked decently for them was their grammy and they've been on a search for years to find their comfort food LOL. This is a freaking diner. Get over yourselves. I was raised to appreciate that diners truly represent the homefront--they come complete with people who have both compassion and attitudes at the same time. Like the person who runs the place, Ruthie I think her name is. She's a powerhouse who literally can cook anything which is what the reason diners exist--pretty good food of any type. Look at the freaking menu, it's EVERYTHING you could ever want. Yeah she's rough on her employees, but they're equally rough on her-- and if you stay long enough, you'd see the dysfunctional family that they are, and how it functions as a team. If they didn't want to be there, they'd leave. So shut up and eat your food. If you want a Friends themed experience go to one of the more sterile diners in Manhattan, but if you want a decent meal for the price (neither of us could finish our breakfast because it was too huge for such a small price), Then stop in to this cozy little diner and watch how this woman can cook anything and everything at the same time. No-frills, cozy, old school NYC coffee shop. Food is decent- breakfasts especially- but it probably wont knock your socks off. I'm giving 5 stars because what more can you expect from a tiny coffee shop? Ok, I've eaten twice at this small diner, because of convenience of where I was. It is old and dated, but with that said both meals were delicious. Plate was full couldn't finish my meal. Normally I wouldn't rate a place unless, either it exceeds my expectations, or its so horrible that I have to warn others. I am rating this place because both times I sat to eat my meal and I couldn't help but notice the feel of community in this place. Each person that walked in, the lady (who reminds you of your mother complaining but you know she does what she does with love) would greet each person by name. This WAS one of my favorite diner's once upon a time. Now it has become very racist and hostile. Recently a waitress from Africa was hired. She is very sweet and friendly. However Ruth and the chef sling racist insults at her every opportunity possible. Ruth belittles her every opportunity on the littlest thing's. She has been told Africans are the worst and can't do anything right. The chef has told her she should be sent back. No one say's a word because sadly they wait until the place is empty to start. This place is a simple good hole in the wall spot. Food tastes home cooked not fancy at all and still pretty satisfying. The staff are generally friendly and attentive. Ruth the owner/manager is pretty friendly and humorous. I've been here a handful of times and there has always been regulars chatting with either the owner or the staff. It's a small place and sits a few people to each table. Some tables are set up close together but after a while you get use to it. Or you can sit where other tables are more apart. If your looking for food that's better quality than an average diner this is a good place to go in Riverdale NY. Parking on the street isn't bad if it's on a weekend. Today I had two eggs with turkey sausage links which was good. I also had an iced coffee which was good and Ruth recommended blending a nice lite iced coffee for me next time I came. If there's milk or juice still in someone's cup she'll pour it back in the container so you're basically drinking someone else's milk or juice. I've eaten food from here a couple times and each time I'm always expecting that the food would taste better. I have to say that for the prices of the food, $3.75 for a large hot chocolate, i would expect that it'd be much better. It's a very pricey coffee shop, and i wouldn't mind the price so much if it was actually worth what i was paying for. Food is ok, but if i want decent food at the same expensive price I'd much rather go up the street to the Bagel Shop. The establishment itself is tiny. Now i don't have anything against small places but I have a thing about places being clean. After walking down Riverdale Avenue and saying I would have to have breakfast there "sometime" for about ten years, on my latest trip back home, I finally decided to pop in Noni's little coffee shop/diner for a Sunday brunch with my brother. The narrow restaurant seats about fifteen or twenty people, offering stools along the countertop. Even though on a Sunday afternoon there were not that many people, the space still felt cramped rather than cozy for some reason. The menu is your standard diner menu... Eggs, pancakes, fries, coffee, etc. Neither my ham & cheese omelette nor my brother's chocolate chip pancakes were anything to write home about, but they were edible. The service seemed friendly with the regulars. There was nothing terribly wrong with the experience, but next time I'm craving diner food though... I think I'm going to have to go with Broadway Diner or Riverdale Diner. read more

She scolds employees and acts like she is some big cheese but all she does is make herself look stupid and mean spirited. A terrible manager she has no business savvy or she would know silence is golden. Also she is far too pushy. I eat here very frequently and love the place. Quick service and no frills for which you have to pay another $20 like places in the city. Ruth runs the place and she not only remembers you if you're a regular, but remembers your drink orders and food preferences. She runs the place efficiently with no nonsense. Other staff is friendly and good at their jobs. The food is always fresh and prepared by a cook who knows what he is doing. I mean it, he is like a machine doing his thing back there. I always stop by Nonis Coffee Shop, on Riverdale Ave., to get PEA SOUP, my FAVORITE! Now, I've been curious for months as to why their Health Inspection is still GRADE PENDING? Well, I looked it up at NYC Health Restaurant Inspection Information, and I found out that as of 6/14/11 They received a "C" Grade, due to their thermostats, and cold food not being below the 40o temperature, no mention of anything else. I'll be brief, as I don't want this to read as a tirade. 1) I was served fermented iced tea for 3 bucks on one occasion. 2) A both over-browned and watery omelette with a side of sausage (also not very prime) ran me 13 bucks. 3) A 6 dollar tip left by my father in law showed up on his CC bill as a 16 dollar tip. After calling and complaining they offered some weak excuses and credited him back the 10 bucks once he walked up there again. In a nutshell, this could be a homey little neighborhood dive but the food is really rough going, overpriced, and I have strong reason to distrust the management. Pass. I have been going there for years. Breakfast is great and sandwiches are fresh and tasty. Soups are delish. I enjoy it.

This place is a really cool neighborhood spot. Ruth is really nice and funny. They have the BEST iced coffee its more like a frappe, I don't know how they do it but its fantastic! The food is generally good. If they seem busy you need to make any special requests very very clear. They also deliver, which is usually prompt. I really like their vegetable soup, mozzarella sticks and tuna sandwiches. Its a very friendly place and convenient if you have to use the post office. I would say the prices are about average for diners around here. Do not think they stay open past 4 or 5 tho. Its more of a breakfast place than anything else, but the ice coffee is far better than dunkin donuts and without the annoying crowds, too. read more

Great place for eats! The food is tasty and made quickly in this little dinner with a lot of personality. The owner runs the place, and takes good care of her customers. She'll remember your name and order if you are a regular, and any staff I've been in contact with is very pleasant and in a good mood. What establishment more represents the working man of North Riverdale than Noni's? You know when you walk in that the customers love the place and Noni herself is an North Riverdale institution. The food is cheap, and very tasty. Granted, I have only been here for breakfast only, but will make it a point to try lunch or one of the early bird specials. Love coming here for breakfast! This place is definitely worth the 20 min drive from my house. Noni's has such a cozy feel! The place is small (there's only about 6 six tables), but the owner has just a BIG presence (she's such a tiny person too LOL) The service here is GREAT as well as the food. The minute you walk in, you're greeted with a "Hello - Good Morning!" If you're a regular, you're remembered and greeted with your first name attached. After sitting, a waitress is at your table almost instantaneously with a menu. After your order is placed, the food comes out a short time later. The food on the menu is traditional diner food. Nothing exotic, which is one of its great qualities I feel, keeps everything simple. This place beats IHOP by a long shot, plus no long waits or crowds. Huge thumbs up to Noni's! read more

I LOVE this place. It is one of the few good places to eat her in North Riverdale, the BBQ Pit and Dino's being the only other places with any good food. Me and my friends are regulars here on Saturday mornings and really have never had anything to compain about. The service good, everyone is really friendly and willing to help you with your orders. I'm pretty sure they have delivery services now which is good. My favorite meal there is the french toast, literally some of the best I have ever had and I am a french toast maniac. However my friends have never complained about the food, and even my father, the king of food, has actually stated that this was the best place to eat in North Riverdale. And to the reader who said that the Riverdale and Broadway Diner were better, NO WAY. I don't know much about the Broadway Diner but the Riverdale Diner is a total waste of money.
