I get there and identify myself and 2 ladies look around and tell me it will be a few minutes. I ask for they want to see my confirmation and they say it's not necessary. I'm waiting until 6:40 and another lady comes over and sees a bag of food to the side just sitting there by itself. She says that it's mine and hands it to me. She says it's been sitting g there since 6:15. I was enraged that I had to wait, that the food was getting cold just sitting there and the incompetent staff. They passed menus and then disappeared for 15 mins. Didn't ask about offering water or any specials. Anyways we ordered the following: Calamari Fritti: 1/5 very bland and very rubbery. Most bites were really tough to chew Margherita Rice Balls: 2/5: mushy rice and some reason the crust had hard bits. Think it wasn't fried evenly Carbonara:2/5 not very egg/creamy at all. Very garlicky and oily Ravioli: 1/5 tasted like the ones you can get for cheap at No Frills. Some how the sides were hard but everything else was soft. Not worth $23 Spaghetti with Meatballs: 2/5 pasta too al dente and just 2 meatballs for big portion of pasta. Tomato sauce was really watery Overall big portion but not worth the price. We placed the food order and one can of Brio (soda) We had asked the server for water and the server returned with only three glasses of water for the four of us. Our friends ordered the vegetarian pizza and the lasagna. They enjoyed both items. We usually order the veal sandwich as a takeout and it comes with a sauce. The server announced that for dining-in the veal sandwich comes with either a garden salad or a small bowl of penne. We opted for the penne. We added mushrooms and red peppers which are additional $2 per item added to the sandwich. Our sandwich was dry and there was no accompanying sauce. When we saw the bill, there was an additional charge of $4 for the penne. This was quite the surprise!! When the server had said that the sandwich "comes with a... penne/salad" it was an assumption that it is not at an additional charge!! So beware!! read more

Had this place in my bookmarks for the longest time but finally got a chance to try it out w/ my gf on a thursday after Hoolala ran out of power unexpectedly and the kitchen was out of commission. Nonna's is in the same plaza so we walked over 2 units. I was worried because I've only ever heard that this place is packed on weekends so I got excited when we looked through the windows and the place did not appear too busy. They have a fridge where you can purchase home kits to make pasta. You order and pay at the counter up front before you find a seat and wait for your food. For this first visit we tried pasta. I ordered fettucine della nonna and my gf ordered the gnocchi bolognese. The food arrived in timely manner (around 10 min from ordering?) Unanimously, we both agreed that the fetuccine tasted better. The gnocchi - while it had a nice, simple sauce - was a lil TOO undercooked (almost hard in fact). There was also not enough meat running through the ragu. My fetuccine had tons of chicken, the pasta was cooked perfectly (al dente) and the seasoning in the sauce was *chef's kiss* Just by looking at other reviews, it seems as though the pizza is getting rave reviews consistently so I'll definitely be returning in the future to try some pizza! read more

As soon as you walk in you are greeted with huge plasma screen of listing their menu and tablet for ordering however after paying we realize the price listed on the screen was wrong. Upon inquiring, they said sorry it's wrong there's posted a sign which was hidden behind another sign stating something along the lines of price increase due to inflation. But the menu are on a screen why wouldn't you just change the price? It's quite misleading! We got Italian sandwiches, a veal parmigiana sandwich for $12 and a chicken and eggplant parmigiana $15 ($14 listed price). The sandwiches were put together in what I assume was pizza dough. They are a little skimpy on sauce and toppings! Charging $2 for any extra cheese/peppers/mushrooms. Talk about money grab! My bf's veal he requested mozzarella for an extra $2, def not worth the $2 for added topping. $2.25 for a can of coke. We only came in here coz Amy's fish and chips were closed and was in need of a quick bite! Please note this review is for takeout only. We got 2 pizzas, 2 salads, and 3 pastas. My favorite pasta was the penne alla vodka, whereas I found the ravioli and carbonara not very good. The penne alla vodka had a great sauce, but it wasn't evenly dispersed which made it difficult to eat since some of the noodles were just really bland. The arugula salad was pretty good - they have thinly sliced pears in there which really adds a nice sweetness to the salad. A nice uptown spot for Italian! Came by on a Thursday night around 6:45 pm, with the restaurant about half full. I've been here a few times previously for lunch, but with dinner it resembles more of a sit down place compared to lunch (where you usually order at the front then get seated/take out as necessary). Our group ordered the pasta alla vodka (x2 penne) and pasta carbonara (linguine). My friend wanted to get lasagna but note that it is only served Friday & Saturday (ended up with the pasta alla vodka). For the pasta alla vodka, the penne was cooked well, the sauce was rich and included bits of bacon. The focaccia bread served along with the dishes topped off the portion - everyone was stuffed afterward. My friend found the carbonara good as well and more importantly, not too cheesy and oily. The food took a tad longer than expected, but otherwise it was a good meal. Seating is comfortable and is ideal for a nice chat. Would recommend reservations for larger groups (6+). Most dishes are around the $15-20 range which is fairly reasonable. Parking is not a problem as it is in a big plaza with a variety of food spots. read more

I love Nonna's Oven :) It is definitely one of my favourite go to spots for fast, delicious and authentic Italian food. It is located in a small plaza SW of Leslie/Elgin Mills, in the same plaza as La Rocca Creative Kitchen, Starbucks, and Akimi Japanese Cuisine. The restaurant is very cozy; you will usually see many of families dining together. The 2 separate entrances often confuse a lot of people. The left door is for take-out, and the right door is for dine-in. (Please read the signs!) They separate the two mainly because of crazy lunch/dinner hours. Wait staff service is available where you can order at your table. During other odd hours, dining in or not, just stick to the left door. You purchase for your meal and beverages at the cashier, grab yourself a seat anywhere, and wait staff will bring the food to you if you are dining in. One of my all time favourite (customized) item to order is the Gnocchi in Alfredo Pesto Sauce. You need to add $$ for that pasta, and for the sauce upgrade lol. The panzoretti is also a must order; it is impressively large (like the size of a pillow!). I usually enjoy the classic pepperoni and cheese flavour, or create my own Hawaiian styled ^^ The calamari is also one of my favourite appetizers Nonna's Oven was highly recommended over and over again by my friends before I knew about it. Wow this place was hard to get a hold of on a Sunday night, the line was always busy!! That's a good sign. I'm been craving traditional pizza and came across this place where I got a margherita Italiana pizza and a genovese pizza. The genovese had chicken, eggplants, goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes on a pesto base. I admit I'm a plain old fashioned margherita fanatic amd bought the other pizza for my hubby :) it was still good but the goat cheese was not my thing for pizza. They have a very authentic Italian menu with some quite unique items...I'd never seen a pear pizza before so I had to try that. One pizza was large enough for 2 people so I decided to split that with my friend. While we waited for a very short while, we just enjoyed the ambience of the restaurant and some water. The pizza came out piping hot and topped with fresh arugula. The pears were caramelized in brown sugar and topped on the fresh mozzarella. The pizza was incredibly unique - a mix of sweet and salty. It was honestly like nothing I've tasted before. I would definitely return just for that pizza! The price point was quite fair - I paid $11 (as I split the pizza - it was $22 total). We've always loved going to Nonna's Oven, but after this disappointing experience, we're reconsidering. We went there to celebrate a special occasion, and unfortunately, the waitress forgot our margarita pizza order. We received our rice balls and pasta, but the pizza never arrived. After asking a different waitress about it, she told us it would be out in a few minutes. It was clear they had forgotten, especially when we saw two margarita pizzas delivered to tables seated 10 minutes after us. We asked the waitress to cancel the pizza, she ignored us and brought it out anyway. The first waitress who took our order claimed she thought we wanted the pizza as the last dish... but who has pizza after pasta? A simple apology could've resolved everything, but instead, we got a weak excuse about when we should eat our food. Customer service definitely needs improvement, and I'm not sure if we'll return. read more

The inside is so bright and spacious and I love that because I like seeing what I'm eating (no offense to Noir because that place is awesome too). I ordered the boscaiola pizza: traditional pizza topped with mushrooms, Italian sausage, and roasted sweet red peppers for $15. What a deal! My colleagues got a veal sandwich and a Firenze pizza (focaccia pizza with potato, onions, goat cheese, and whole black olives seasoned with oregano, olive oil, and rosemary). Boscaiola was 5/5. I got it because it sounded heavy, which is my fav type of pizza. The ground pepper I got complimented the Italian sausage for well. The mushrooms were really fresh and made the whole pizza juicy but didn't make the pizza soggy. The Firenze pizza had a light taste and was relatively dry until you sink your teeth into that cheese. The olives complicate the taste and make the potato slices have an interesting flavour. The calamari fritti my colleague treated us was divine. Juicy, and they come with two sauces. Marinara and... Some non spicy mayo based pink sauce. I only had the calamari with the pink sauce and it was so good. The batter is seasoned too, and it wasn't oily at all even after it's been sitting on the table for a good hour as we devoured our entrées first. Def recommend. It's lovely to see a non franchise pizza joint that's classy and cozy. You know an Italian place is good when you see a lot of Italians come in here! It is a decent Italian restaurant in the neighbourhood. Indeed, it was quite popular and full house on Wednesday evening. I passed by this place many time, but I have never tried it. At first I thought it was a small self-serve resto. I was surprised the place was bigger than I thought. It were greeted by friendly servers; the service was kind of prompt and fast. We ordered - Arugula Salad - it was OK. I wish it would have more honey and lemon dressing. Pizzas - Meat Lovers and Novello. Toppings are quite generous. The pizzas were family size. The pizzas were nicely done. They were "stone oven" pizza but I couldn't taste the aroma. The thin crust could be more crispy. The knifes they provided cannot cut through the pizzas. :) I like Novello more just because I like meat with veggies. Pasta Alla Vodka - portion was generous. The rose sauce was flavourful. Penne was made al dente. This was the dish I enjoyed the most. The server offered us parmesan cheese and hot sauce. The hot sauce was really spicy and tasted very good! Nonna's Oven has been around for a while now and I really enjoy this place as a casual eatery; if I am in in the area. I find their pasta dishes are probably preferred over their pizza. My favorite is definitely their Friday/Saturday special - lasagna. If you happen to be there on those days - just order it. Trust me. Service can be for most part ok - mostly attentive - but they have forgotten about me a few times for minor things - but nothing glaring enough to make me want to not visit - if I am in the area. This place is very busy and they do have a steady flow of people coming in and out of the place. Undercooked pasta with a good sauce Got the "daily lunch special" and for almost $20 was expecting to be blown away and I was, but for all the wrong reasons. Don't remember exactly what the dish was called, but it had linguini and veggies (sweet peppers, mushrooms, asparagus) in a garlicky sauce. The sauce was good, but the biggest issue was with the pasta, which was undercooked to the point that rather than saying it was "al dente", you can call it "al denture." The cheese tortolini tastes exactly like the ones I had a few months ago in Italy!! The stone oven cooked pizza was very good and came to us quick quickly which was great since I was quite hungry. I've been meaning to try this place for some time and finally did on Saturday. I would have given this restaurant 5 stars if it were not for the fact that the restaurant has zero ambiance and the staff (at least the night I was there) appear to be young, poorly trained and always rushed. The service was relatively poor but the food was excellent hence the 4 star rating. The portions are very generous and the price is fair which may explain why they are so busy and why they appear to do a lot of take out business. We ordered the grilled vegetable, arugula salad and the penne in vodka rose sauce. All were excellent. The arugula salad was lightly dressed with a refreshing dressing. The sliced pear added a hint of sweetness. There was also a generous amount of Asiago cheese on the salad which I appreciated. The penne Alla vodka was excellent. We asked for it without pancetta as my dining companion does not eat bacon. Half of it went home with me as the portion was very generous. Next time I will surely try the calamari which looked and smelled delicious. The huge pizzas and panzerroti coming out of the kitchen looked amazing as well. I think the owners can warm up the ambiance easily with some simple changes to the paint colour, decor and lighting to make it look and feel less like a typical strip mall restaurant. I would also have loved to see some seafood on the menu or a dish like chicken marsala or parmigiana. However, if you're craving good pizza or pasta, you can't go wrong with Nona's Oven. read more

Whoa. Talk about a sleeper. I sauntered into Nonna's at the behest of not one but two different friends when they learned where I would yesterday evening. I checked the reviews and the pictures and they all seemed to rage about this little place nestled in a tiny plaza on the south side of Elgin Mills Rd in Richmond Hill. The inside appears to be two former unit's that have merged into one, with the walk-in side being just that, catering towards take-out/away options and quick sit-downs, and the far side being more for larger groups or those looking for a more traditional dining experience. Both equally rustic Italian in design. I didn't have much time so I reviewed the specials and asked for recommendations from my server and then went totally in the other direction from her delicious suggestions, and ordered a hearty helping of spaghetti and meatballs. I asked how big their balls were, and the server burst out laughing and told me they were pretty big... I played along and told her the bigger the better - I'm pretty sure we're besties now. #bondingOverBallsintheBurbs I was concerned initially that the order took awhile to come out but when it arrived my concerns immediately evaporated - in the molten steam pouring off the dish. Holy Meatballs! This was the hottest, freshest, and best-cooked dish of spaghetti and meatballs I've ever encountered. The noodles perfectly al dente (just a hair firmer than soft so that the noodles don't get mushy), the sauce a perfectly balanced marinara that was not overly sweet or overly acidic, and finally da balls, we're a perfect balance as well between egg, breadcrumb and noticeably two kinds of meat used to make the flavours pop (two kinds of meat, sometimes three, is how real Italians do it). And the best thing of all was the price. $16 for all that food -which rendered me almost in a pasta coma. I was more than happy to pay it, heck I'd pay for it twice! First time here .. i asked for the meatball "sandwich" for lunch .. a traditional and all-italian choice .. it was an little too doughy to my taste and the dough was a little chewy .. ( also, compared to Italy ) .. all-in-all it was well prepared and tasty . Chewy or not, i finished it all . it was good . when i was served with the panini, i asked my server ( who gave me the impression he could be the owner ) for olive oil .. he brought me a generous portion of it .. which is always appreciated . Happened to be in the neighbourhood early enough to score a table on a Friday night. Got there at 530 and at 545 there were only seats left at the bar! Delicious home style food, friendly service, very reasonable prices and lots of happy tables. We had: Lasagna - only available Fridays and Saturdays. No cheese in this meat laden pasta dish. Really good tomato sauce. Made for Garfield. Gnocchi with vodka sauce - I brought half of this very decadent dish home. Excellent homemade gnocchi. I am sure we will return again with our child. Let's just say that my previous feelings about Nanna's Oven were only solidified. Any place that considers Canadian bacon as authentic pancetta is no Italian restaurant. The menu specified 2 classic pasta dishes were made with pancetta and we got anything but. We even called and the restaurants response was, 'we know it's not pancetta, but we've been making it like this for years'. Least the man on the other end of the phone said he'd let the owner know. After a little education on the difference between the 2 pork products they dismissed our complaint and hung up swiftly. Let's just say... yuk! read more
