Nonno's (Grandfather's) Bakery on South York Street, Hatboro, PA, is an old school Italian artisanal bake shop where everything you behold is made on site, and generally produces high quality cookies, pastries, donuts, fruit tarts, pies and an extraordinary number of marzipan fruit miniatures. I stopped in after lunch down the street at Gallo Tropical, looking for interesting desserts for me and to take home for the fam. Upon entry I quickly realized that I had entered an unexpected time machine that would carry me back to childhood adventures with my parents and grandparents shopping the small ethnic stores in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, where Jewish and Italian delis, butchers, fish mongers and fruit stalls kept us fed and connected to our heritage. Nonno's display cases were full of beautiful cakes and the like that required time to explore and difficult choices to be made among the incredible bounty of colorful, luxuriously tempting items. There is a health limit to the quantity of sugar anyone should consume, and this bakery would push that to the max. So, I let my camera do the tempting while I selected only a few things that were turning me on. A slice of carrot cake to cover the pastries, two donut twists to sample their coffee companions, and a marzipan banana to tease on the fruit bowl of choices created by the creative hand of their talented almond paste sculptors. Sure, it wasn't enough, but now I know where these artists are, and can return at will. The carrot cake was not what I imagined would be a heavy cake base with uber sweet cream cheese icing; but instead a light gingery cake and a mildly sweet layer of butternut-like topping. It was excellent in this format. More subtle taste than the diner version. The donuts were a yeasty twist, still moist and chewy, with a delicious thin layer of icing that was a slow pleasure to eat. Better than anticipated. The marzipan banana (as were all the trayed fruit) was a softly firm almond paste that was best taken in small bites and masticated with attention to the release of that unique and seductive almond flavor that expanded as chewed. Ummm... It wasn't a complete Roman heaven. I skipped the cookies covered with jimmies, and the cannoli prefilled with vanilla sweet ricotta (I'm not a jimmies guy, and prefer my cannoli filled when ordered). Nonetheless, Nonno's Bakery is a worthy destination to satisfy that part of your sweet tooth that can only be satisfied by high quality old world goodies.

These were the worst cupcakes I have ever tasted. The white buttercream tasted like nothing and the chocolate buttercream tasted like dirt! The cupcakes themselves were dry and had a floral flavor? Very weird. I'd try their other desserts but never again for these cupcakes! You have been warned!

Excellent, authentic southern Italian pastries at Nonno's in Hatboro! Highly recommend!

Sigh I'm so disappointed especially since I've loved this bakery since it's opened. Decided to treat myself and make the 50 minutes drive round trip to go get their faschnachts for Fat Tuesday. Got home got settled w/my favorite Ocean City coffee company's (that's for another review) fresh ground coffee in front of my desk excitedly grabbed the pair of scissors to open up what I was anticipating to be phenomenal start to my morning. Took a bite of the cinnamon sugar covered faschnacht and it tasted stale! How utterly disappointing! I put it straight back into the box! Well there went $10.50 and a wasted hour drive for my once a year fattening indulgence. While this was a very BIG disappointment ... mind you their Italian pastries are really awesome and worth the drive. I'll know better for the faschnachts though. Haven't been able to find a great one locally since the Clemens and Genaurdis bakeries closed in Hatfield.

Pastries are to die for - fabulous selection - customer service is horrible - very rude ladies behind the counter. Very sad.

Once a week I treat myself to one of their fruit tarts and it's something I look forward to. Today I tried a mango passionfruit confection that was absolutely unreal. When I arrived after a very good Mexican lunch further up York Road there wasn't much to choose from in their display case. A few pastries were about all there was. Not a loaf of bread to be found. The young woman behind the counter was friendly and helpful, but she couldn't provide what I was really looking for, great brownies or a fresh fruit pie or coffee cake to take home. So, I opted for a Carrot Cake pastry and a large Chocolate Chip Cookie. Both were adequate, but less than the rapturous experience I was hoping for. The Choco Chip was very sweet and crunchy, but without many chocolate chips. The Carrot Cake looked great, but its flavor was muted. The cake was not as moist as I anticipated, and the icing with a mild light cream texture, as opposed to the heavier cream cheese topping I was expecting. Not at all what I was craving. Sure, it may have saved me from calories and a diabetic coma, but I was looking for a small splurge. This place clearly was too healthy and sensible for my moment seeking temporary indulgences. Although the cafe was cozy and sat at sidewalk level, it just didn't "pop" for me. Perhaps, a better time would permit more satisfying results. 3.5 Patisserie Etoiles.

Hmm...so this is the spot in the area if you are looking for gluten free options…read more I get the mom and pop shops have to charge a bit more to stay in business but I never feel like I am getting good value for my money when coming here. I ordered the crabmeat with penne entree and informed the person taking my order please sub out the penne for spaghetti. Not only did I get my meal with penne but it had a minuscule amount of crabmeat in it. I am talking this crabmeat must have all been in the sauce or something as I could not even see it. This entree was not cheap by any means. My girlfriend got a chicken dish and the chicken was very thin.....is this a good thing? Is this the trend now in restaurants? My girlfriend enjoyed it but again is twenty plus dollars reasonable for chicken with gluten free pasta? They have a bakery that makes many options and most are gluten free, which is nice as I feel for those that must adhere to a gluten free diet and the options can be sparse at many restaurants unfortunately in the US. I do not plan on coming back but there is nothing wrong with the place, just imo a bit overpriced. As always people SYOY!!!
