i had a bad first meal here when they first opened, but they've really stepped up their game since (or maybe i got the one bad thing on the menu). I've gotten multiple meals here, and the chicken/meat is good - well textured, and the vegetables are cooked right, and seem really fresh. I think the food's really good here. I hope they keep it up. I went there and I waited 15 minutes with NO food. I ordered 2 bahn mi sandwhiches and never got them. The waitress NEVER came to refill our water. The people next to us sat down and no more than 5 minutes ( I kept track), they got their food BEFORE us! I was so mad, I had to actually walk out. Service was horrible. Cold miserable weather is my driver that keeps me coming back to this place for my comfort food. I love a giant bowl of steaming hot soup on those days and this place delivers. The menu has great options beside pho. (I wish they offered more varieties of the pho.) The cozy restaurant also serves up wine and beer to go along with the food as well. Came here on a Friday night, and unlike other reviews, we had excellent service. it was busy, so i didn't expect the service to be lightening fast, but it the appetizer and main dishes came within an acceptable time frame. The waitstaff were pleasant and took out order promptly. We got the JP noodle and the tofu curry without coconut milk and the vietnamese goi cuon, or fresh rice paper rolls. The rolls and the dipping sauce was fine, nothing spectacular. The curry dish was a light curry broth with assorted veggies and tofu. For those of you who like more hearty coconut based curries, this one is completely different. its more refreshing rather than heavy, which hit the spot for me at the time. The noodle dish was tasty and not too greasy and had a good amount of fixin's on it. again nothing spectacular. I'm giving this place 4 stars because JP is sorely lacking in any good Asian food, and having a Thai-Vietnamese restuarant in these parts that is not Americanized is way past due. read more

Ordered mango curry for take-out. Overall experience was not too bad; the food came out quickly and was still hot when I got it back to my apartment. The curry sauce was great. Some of the mango slices were a little overripe, I think, but there were huge pieces of chicken and veggies. The hostess/cashier person was very nice and attentive even though it was hectic, though she did seem perplexed when I asked to sub out my rice for noodles and had to point it out to her on the menu. Almost always I choose between one of two entrees, hence I have a firm grip on consistency. These two are Pad Thai and Chili Basil Duck. The PT is properly made -- the sprouts stirred in with the noodles. Several thin slices of chicken and three shrimp are included, but no particular spice, so I order "lightly spiced" and it's just right for me. Consistency! The Chili Basil Duck is a different matter, spice-wise. Fairly hot, but not hot hot hot. This place seems unable to do duck wrong, the meat is always tender and tasty. (Note: the tamarind version is very sweet.) Good as it may be, the meat is outclassed by the superb vegetables. Carrots, zucchini, green beans, broccoli and bell peppers are each cooked to crunchy, colorful perfection. This is a talented, high-performing kitchen! The few other dishes I've had were all excellent too. Note: The take-out service is unusually prompt, so I recommend not phoning your order in, but showing up and waiting the few minutes it takes to make sure you get the freshest food possible. I eat here quite a bit and I will order either the Pho Dac Biet or Pho Ga... Tonight I ordered the Pho 's (chicken noodle soup). My friend and I were initially going to eat there so we were seated.... 10 minutes later still having NOT been created despite only 5 other tables being sat and already having their food, we get up from our table to place a takeout order... It was only AT THIS point that the server who had been leaning against the computer and staring at us the entire 10 minutes decided she wanted to approach us!!!! We place our takeout order, and when we get home with it, I come to find out that my soup stock container was half empty and the container with the noodles, chicken, cilantro and green onions.... Only contained 3 shreds of chicken!!! And finally no limes to be found anywhere in the bag with the chili & hoisin sauce containers... I am a former restaurant owner and I am the first to give the benefit of the doubt when dining out... But after this experience... I may have to go down to dorchester to get my Vietnamese food and skip over Noodle Barn all together... Not worth the $$$ spent to get half the portion! read more

My boyfriend and I love this place. We often get take out but I've also dined in a couple times. I can't speak to their noodle dishes or salads, but their pho is awesome. I often get Torn Yum Coconut pho or Cahn Chua with tofu and vegetables. Great serving size for the price too. I've tried the Fresh Roll appetizer and it wasn't the best, very bland. Mostly lettuce, not much tofu or basil for flavor. Also if you dine in, they have wine and beer on tap and in bottles. Service is usually friendly and really good and I've never seen a line. They don't deliver, but takeout for a 2 person order never takes more than 15 minutes. read more

Ordered take out tonight. The Goi Cuon, fresh roll, was much skinnier than before, lots of lettuce, no mint, half a shrimp. I had to look at the outside of the roll to see if it had any rice noodles. The Pad Kee Mow was also lacking, no scallions, two slivers of bell peppers (yes, only two) and only about an inch long. It did have sliced onions, lots of them and some carrots. The take out container was not full. The Pad Gra Pow had the same bell pepper problem. This dish was just ok with an indistinguishable sauce, lots of heat though. The rice that accompanies this dish appeared to be a half order. Two of us had one small serving each but there wasn't enough rice left over to use with the remaining Pad Gra Pow which says a lot because this container wasn't full either. Disappointing. read more

Ordered Drunken noodles and mango sticky rice for takeout last night, and was very pleased !!! The drunken noodle was extremely tastey, with nice variation of fresh vegetables as well. Finally, Vietnamese in JP! I had the bun with pork, but I feel like they skimped on the meat. :( I need more than a few pieces to make it a good bun dish, to me. The pho was on the more blander side (but I think it would be good for the American palate) for me, but I'm Vietnamese and biased. I didn't think it was horrible though and would eat again if I had a craving. Waitstaff was nice, service is a little inexperienced, but I suspect it will improve. They're still new so I hope they take some of this feedback from these reviews and rock my world when I come again itching for pho this upcoming winter. read more

I was visiting friends that live in JP so we chose this new place for dinner. I lived in JP last year by Green St station so I frequented the many food joints in the area. It was $9 for a standard bowl of pho, which wasn't that bad. In terma of cost size ratio though, I would definitely prefer Chinatown pho. I guess this place is only really good for convenience if I were still living in the area. The restaurant is very clean and brightly lit. It was awkward because I spoke to one of the waiters in Vietnamese who clearly couldn't understand me...then only to realize that it was a Vietnamese/Thai place. My friends got the same pho and the other got the green curry, which she complained was really spicy even though they didn't signify on the menu. My threshold for spice is really high, so I dismissed that notion. read more

Upon asking for suggestions, the waiters suggested the Canh Chua pho - which turned out to be a pretty sweet / tangy dish filled with large, raw tomatoes and pineapples. Ordered takeout. Pho ga was extremely greasy and only tasted like onions. JP noodle was spicy, and had no other flavor. Crab Rangoons were fine, but very cream-cheesy. Trash. Absolute trash. I went here with my family of three and was treated with rudeness and classlessness. The female waitresses were talking loudly and cracking jokes right in the middle of the restaurant. They gave us one napkin each person. I had to go to the bathroom to clean my hands and mouth in the middle of my meal. The waitresses walk around the restaurant yelling at each other in Thai language with no regard for anyone. I have been to noodle barn sooooo many times and every time the Pho has been amazing!! This review is not about the food but how I felt we were treated when we came in. See usually I have a golden rule, I never enter a restaurant 25 minutes before they are scheduled to close, I find that rude and totally understand why you would get the stink eye in that situation. However, in our last visit to Noodle barn we came in about 40 minutes before closing and every worker in there looked at us like we just wrecked their Wednesday night. It was awful, we ordered and ate anyway while trying to ignore the angry stares but it wasn't a pleasant experience. Another couple came in about 9:45 (they close at 10pm) wanting to order take out and the server said they were closed. Disappointing to say the least, this place just fell a notch for me. read more

I don't know why this place has only 3.5 stars but it shouldn't. I was going to check out the Lebanese restaurant down the street but this place was popping with people so came here instead. Even though it was scorching outside I opted for a warm spicy dish- Kao soi. For those of you who don't know what this is, it's a noodle dish in a fair amount of spicy yellow curry broth, so kind of a cross between soup and noodles. It's really good. My friend got the pad graw pow (minced chicken and basil over rice). I might have liked this dish even more than mine! Great basil flavor, not as much kick as the Kao soi but I'm sure if you ask for it to be spicier they can bring it up a notch. good service, cute atmosphere (although tables are close together- no secrets here!). Came here for lunch with a buddy of mind and tried one if their Lunch Specials, the Fisherman's Fury, a combination of shrimp, mussel and squid stir fried in Sriracha sauce with vegetables ($9) and iced Vietnamese Coffee ($3.5), super sweet, but so good!! The food was delicious, tasted very fresh, and it was evident in the meticulous presentation that the restaurant takes a lot of pride in what they offer.
