This is an incredibly affordable place for a quick lunch to go. The quality of the food itself is a bit iffy (see fried rice comments below), but some of the items were still very good. The staff was incredibly friendly, and I think I only waited 5 minutes from when I ordered to when the food was ready to take away, so that's pretty amazing! I ordered: Lunch special ($11.45) - The price alone here is incredible. You get a good variety of food and a good amount as well for what feels like pre-pandemic prices. I've seen a lot of lunch specials being raised to more than $15 or so recently, so the fact that this one is only $11.45 is a great deal. It also came in a tupperware with a big section and a small section, and I would have expected the rice to go in the big section and the main to go in the smaller one, but they did the opposite - so you get a really large and nice portion of your main course! The actual food I got was: Crab rangoons - These were nicely fried and the filling had noticeable pieces of imitation crab in it. I also liked the savory flavor, as some places make their filling sweeter, but this was more on the savory and salty side. Very nice crab rangoon. Pork fried rice - This was the iffy one. The flavor was on point, but the rice itself was hard and felt undercooked. It wasn't inedible, but it was definitely noticeable, though covering it in the lobster sauce made up for it. If I had ordered the fried rice alone without a sauce, I would have been pretty disappointed. Shrimp with lobster sauce - This came with 4 shrimps which is pretty standard, but it was an above average lobster sauce in my opinion. It was nice and gooey, salty, and savory, and the shrimp was very meaty. This was definitely the star of the lunch, and I had some leftover to eat with white rice for my next meal! All in all, I'd definitely come back - the price along is a great deal, and I'd like to see if the fried rice would be better on a second time around. The food at this Chinese take-out is pretty good & the service is fast. I've been getting my dinners from this place a long time. But recently, the order takers/counter persons have made mistakes. My small order today (egg rolls, beef teriyaki, chicken w mushrooms) was missing a key item (duck sauce). Also no soy packets or fortune cookies. When I called from home, the young lady didn't seem very concerned or apologetic. I hope they hire better counter service staff in the future! read more

During COVID, places have been very limited but i'm glad i found this place. If you want to help small businesses with great and fast service and good quality food, here is a good place to start. I suggest just ordering directly with them without using a third party... cuz you know dang well they be taking a big cut from their services. I'm glad i tried this place despite some of the bad reviews. Cheap eats and quality food... what do you expect? Some fine dine up to par service? Just know that , all the veggies are crunchy and fresh and everything is clean and individually packaged. They even read my little notes i wrote, (since i'm sometimes extra) and hooked them all up. Terrible! I ordered pork fried rice and it was stale and hard as if they left the rice out for hours or it was made from the previous night. Then I ordered chicken chow mein and it was way different from I have had before. I called them to let them know about the rice and all dude said was he will let the chef know. A waste of $15. Hong Kong Cafe II is cream of the crop Americanized Chinese food and sometimes, that's just exactly what you need. It certainly was what The Boy and I needed when we were trapped in our apartment during a classic New England snowstorm...and bottles of wine were consumed. I dialed quite a few places that were listed as open on GrubHub before finding one that was actually open. Some caveats? The language barrier of having to order over the phone. Stick to the app if you can. I tried to order Beef Noodle Soup which was listed on GrubHub and they said they only had Chicken so I got that instead. The Boy got Garlic Noodles. This ended up being the best greasy Chinese of our lives AND it was ridiculously affordable. Per the photo, I received a TALL takeout container of chicken noodle soup (lo mein noodles) with the perfect fake chicken broth taste and a large order of garlic noodles (which could have truthfully used more salt/soy sauce) for the sum total of something like $11-$13! Compared to other Americanized Chinese takeout places in Boston, sometimes an order of 6 dumplings cost $7-9 itself. For years I have popped in here on the way home from late night outings because they were the only place open. So all I knew is that they had a good selection of fried appetizers perfect for late night consumption. But recently I needed to order dinner for 10 people and I decided to finally give them a serious try. All of the food we ordered was super high quality. Beef in dishes such as Lo Mein and Curry was all very tender. General Gao Chicken was 1/3 cheaper than elsewhere and just as good. Lo Mein, Fried Rice all superb. This place can be both amazing but sometimes it can be gross. I think it depends on the time of day you order and whether they've changed the oil, because some of the fried items can taste stale. They have a good pupu platter and the egg rolls are great, but the pork items (esp. the boneless pork is extremely greasy and tastes old). I wouldn't choose this place for a fancy meal or the #1 Chinese restaurant, but if you're hungry and aren't looking for anything too adventurous, this is your spot. Portions are big. read more

Regarding taste, the food was decent until I discovered a BUG in my food. I ordered through Grubhub and tried contacting the restaurant first to settle the issue. I spoke to about 3 people and tried to explain what the issue was. They continued to ask me what was wrong and said "your the only person today". It didn't make sense at all. and further more if I was actually the only person who ordered I'm disturbed because why don't you have more customers. I tried explaining for 4 minutes to no avail. Hong Kong Cafe was GREAT! I had Chinese food that was very different than any other Chinese I've had. We ordered Tofu and Broccoli, Veggie Lo Mein, and chicken and broccoli. The tofu and broccoli was so delicious and something I haven't be able to order from all Chinese food restaurants. The Lo Mein was delicious and I would 100% order it again. I loved the takeout here the couple times I've been. I get the beef chow fun, and it is really delicious. The noodles are nice and chewy, there is a good amount of vegetables, and overall quantity is good. Also, the food isn't overly greasy! This is my new go-to place for chow fun. read more

I hate posting negative reviews, but I just received my order (delivery) and my meal was pretty undercooked. We ordered the Mongolian beef, beef and broccoli, two soups, and Peking ravioli. Everything was more or less fine (a bit on the greasier side), but the beef and broccoli was undercooked. I bit into one of the pieces of beef and it was waaaaay too chewy and when I saw the color, I realized it was undercooked. The food is very Americanized. But the General Gau's chicken is tasty. Twice cooked pork with a lot of vegetables but not as spicy as i had expected. Mushi is better than some of the restaurants I tried in DC, Brooklyn and Florida, though I wish they could put some of the dried yellow flower. Delivery is fast! I am on an eternal quest for a go-to Chinese place in this town, and tonight's journey took me to Hong Kong Cafe II (and by "took me to," I mean "I ordered it online because it's too hot to cook right now, and man, I'd punch a kitten for central AC"). I ordered what I pretty much always order from Chinese places: a sesame chicken combo with pork fried rice and an egg roll. That was $9.35 and the delivery minimum was $10, so I decided to splurge and get an order of beef teriyaki too (which was $8.95). The food took about an hour to arrive, which is pretty standard for this neighborhood, and was still pretty hot when I got it, which was a plus. As for the food itself, here's how it rated on my plate: Pork fried rice: 1 out of 5 possible stars. Seriously, this was some disappointing, flavorless mush. It was lumpy, veggie-less, and virtually tasteless -- I had to dump an entire cup of sauce onto it to make it edible, and I still wound up throwing out about two thirds of it. That made me sad. Sesame chicken: 3 out of 5. This wasn't the best sesame chicken I have ever had, but it wasn't the worst. It was decently crispy and had discernible pieces of meat, though the sauce was very sweet -- after a while, too sweet. I ate about half but was not really inspired to finish the rest. Egg roll: 3 out of 5. It was kind of greasy and the dough was really thick, but, I mean, it was an egg roll. Greasy fried dough dipped in sauce is still pretty good even when what's inside is kind of flavorless (which, sadly, it was). Beef teriyaki: 4 out of 5. I'm really glad I sprung for this, because it was the highlight of the meal. The beef was pretty tender and had a nice sweet-and-soy teriyaki glaze -- it was the one thing other than the egg roll that I finished, and it is probably the one thing I would make it a point to order again. I would also try other beef dishes based on how good it was. As you can see, the average of my ratings comes out to 2.75, so I rounded up to 3. Honestly, even though it was overall underwhelming, the menu is so huge that I would definitely consider giving some other dishes a try the next time the mood for greasy Chinese hits. I also really like that they offer combo meals; many places around here don't, and that option makes it easier to sample different things. However, I will pick and choose carefully next time -- and my quest for a foolproof, go-to place shall continue. read more

It still amazes me that location effects my rating. On the Massachusetts South Coast, this would be a 5* restaurant and I would be eating there at least once a month. However, in Brookline, it's just another good restaurant. We had a large group so I got to try a lot of things. Hot and Sour Soup: Great flavor and just the right amount of hotness. Could have used more crunchy pieces to balance out the texture profile. If you like yours really hot, ask for extra heat. Crab Rangoon: 5*, large portion, good taste, very good filling to crust ratio, Shell cooked perfectly. Beef w/Ginger and Scallions: Bland & tasteless. Scallions looked like onions. Too many onions compared to beef. Moo Shi Pork: 5*, Pancakes were perfect thickness. Taste was exactly what I expected. Hoisin Sauce had perfect taste and consistency. Chicken w/Mushroom: Bland and tasteless. Chicken was soft and tender. Color of chicken seemed too white. Broccoli w/Oyster Sauce: When I opened the container, all I saw was broccoli. Down in the bottom of the container was a small amount of thin liquid. I was expecting this to be a looser. However, the taste was quite good. A lazy Saturday evening, we had a hankering for Chinese delivery. Our staple is always General Gaos chicken (unoriginal, but helps set a standard for us). Ordering over the phone was frustrating and the lady was pretty short with us. For the food itself: we actually really liked the pork fried rice - nice fatty chunks of pork and I'm a fan of thickly diced onions that are more on the raw side. The chicken itself was too breaded and not meaty enough. And I lamented the absence of broccoli in the combo. You do get a choice of appetizer per usual. First off, they gave me SO MANY crab rangoons I was thoroughly impressed. That never happens at other places. I was so happy. Also, my order was prepared super fast and was exactly what I wanted. Piping hot lo mein. It was exactly what I thought it would be/ wanted. The not so great reviews on this page make me sort of mad but also laugh. Their prices are so reasonable!! Not bad if you crave for some American Chinese food. Price is cheaper than most other Chinese restaurant in Brookline area. Food is mediocre but on the saltier side. Be prepared to buy more rice or cook some at home if you are ordering for multiple people. 2 dishes order gives you one tall container of rice and I often find it not enough to balance the salt. One odd thing I find is they only give you one fortune cookie no matter how many dishes you order. We've been looking for a new takeout Chinese place in our area for a few years now. We've tried a few, and none live up to our expectations. Recently, I walked past Hong Kong Cafe II and picked up a menu, hopeful that there was a new place. Last week, after trying to order from O Yummy Cuisine (we have ordered from here before and were fairly please), and being told they do not deliver to us, we decided to give Hong Kong a try. And I am SO glad we did!! One of the big things we like in a takeout Chinese place is the combo meals (especially for my husband) and, although their menu calls them Luncheon Specials, they do serve them all day. We ended up getting 2 combo plates: - Chicken with Broccoli with Vegetable Lo Mein (had to pay $2 extra) and Chicken Teriyaki. - Kung Pao Chicken with Pork Fried Rice and Boneless Ribs, and $1.50 extra for an Egg Roll. Plus, since I LOVE dumplings, I had to get an order of the Peking Ravioli. The Lo Mein and Pork Fried Rice were not dry, as I've had from many places, and were very tasty. Both chicken dishes were tender and filled with flavor - and veggies! (I love that the Chicken w/Broccoli comes with carrots - I can't remember if I requested that or not, as I love that addition.) And the Peking Ravioli? A fairly large size and just as I like them - and with a delicious dipping sauce. YUM! I didn't try the Boneless Ribs, but the Chicken Teriyaki (only 1 skewer) was so tender and delicious. Since we ordered from Foodler, we had to pay a delivery fee and tip, so that made it a bit pricier, but the total was $36.06 - and we each got 2 meals out of it (and probably could have gotten a third for 1 of us, if we weren't such piggies). We will definitely be ordering from here again!! They are close enough that we can pick it up, but they also deliver - and much faster than we expected. The broccoli with peppers lunch combo that came with rice and boneless ribs ... well I threw most of it out. Flavorless and quality was sub par. This is my go-to in the area for Chinese. I get the same thing every time (chicken with broccoli and vegetable lo mein), so I can't speak on too many of the dishes, but what I get I absolutely love. The chicken is tender and sliced thin and there's a lot of sauce (which I like because I mix it into the lo mein or white rice). The lo mein isn't dry and the veggies are tender crisp. Not too salty or sweet, either. Truly just the way I like it. You also get a TON of food. For about $20 I easily have at least 2 large meals, but I usually get 3 out of it. I've also had the spring rolls and crab rangoons which were really good. Spring rolls were a little greasy but still tasty, and the crab rangoons were great! (They also give you a ton of em') I live nearby and always do pick-up, so I can't comment on delivery service. I order online through their website, and it's usually ready in about 20 minutes. Every time I go, the food is still piping hot by the time I walk back to my apartment. The woman working the register is always very pleasant and polite as well. I have never been inside Hong Kong Cafe II, I don't know what it looks like, I didn't even know where it was until I looked it up on Yelp. I live in Mission Hill and order from them through foodler, and they consistently deliver their delicious and reasonably priced food in a timely manner. Their menu is so big that I haven't tried much of it, but my favorite part is the Dinner Specials. You get rice (white or pork fried), an appetizer (single person portion) and the entree for ~$10. You can choose to get a different kind of fried rice or lo mein for an extra charge (I always do. It's always worth it.). SUCH a good value, and the food is always so delicious. Most recently I got the Sesame Chicken dinner special with pork lo mein ($2 extra) and crab rangoon, and an appetizer of scallion pancakes. Chicken, lo mein, and rangoons were wonderful, but the scallion pancakes were a bit soggy. Now, HKCII is always on time with their deliveries, and the food is always at a good temp. This time, though, food was delivered as usual and was PIPING HOT. Like, I almost couldn't touch the container hot. It was awesome! Their beef teriyakis are a must try.
