While Nook and Cranny is a little out of the way, it was well worth the drive/trip after a full day of traveling back from PEI. A cute little local restaurant and pub, our food was delicious, service was lovely (our waitress was the only server and handled a busy dining room like a champ), many menu choices for even the pickiest of diners, ample portions, and all fairly priced. pretty good!! the waitress was friendly and the restaurant was very clean and nice. zucchini bread was soft and delicious. Three of our five person party got the ship wreck platter which was a mix of fried fish, shrimp, clams and scallops with a side of French fries and Cole slaw. I'm not a fan of coleslaw but everything else tastes fresh and good, the French fries were crispy and great! one of our party didn't care for the way the clams were breaded. our fourth person got the chicken Parm which they enjoyed, and the fifth got the day in Italy which had a trio of Italian dishes that they really liked! four of the five of us got creme brulee and it was definitely tasty!! overall, would definitely go back and definitely would recommend. read more

Wow! What a hidden gem, we didn't know anything about this place and were just driving by, shocked to find how famous it is locally and in NE! Had the soup of the day, leek and potato, which had fresh chives from the garden. Steve was cutting them when we pulled in. The Greek chicken and salad dish was delicious, kids enjoyed their food, but the best part was the 12 layer cake! We devoured it before I could take a picture. Got to meet Steve the chef/ owner, running a one man show and doing a fantastic job. He also pointed out some great spots for us to stop with the kids on our way to PEI. read more

Made the trip from St-Andrew's as we're on vacation, this restaurant was highly recommended by many people we met during our time here. The service was excellent, the food was even better, I had the fish tacos which exceeded my expectations. I also got to personally thank the hard working chef. Several websites list the Nook and Cranny restaurant as the greatest hidden gem restaurant in all of Maine. Based on our experience, I don't know if it's tops, but it ranks right up there! For a town of less than 1,600 people, there is no question that Nook and Cranny is a major overachiever! We started with a crab dip that was really good, although don't expect any chunks of crabmeat. We also had oysters Rockefeller, a dish I eat any chance I get. These were unfortunately not good, at least when compared to the best versions I've eaten in major costal towns like New York and San Francisco. My main course was one of the daily specials, so it may not be available when you visit. This was a delicious Tuscan chicken breast stuffed with pepper Jack cheese and spinach! It was the best thing I ate there! The fresh gnocchi that came with it was equally good! We also had some of their tortellini which was equally tasty and wonderfully cheesy! If you're driving the Maine coast, this is certainly a worthy stop! read more

This is just a fabulous place to eat, a "must-stop" restaurant just before crossing into Canada, or just after coming back.

Not much for food choices in the area . This was open and gave the vibe of fine dining . I was wrong . We walked in and stood there while a girl with a tablet just stood there on her tablet . I asked for a table for two . She said sit over there . They were all small tables so I took a larger table with elbow space. It was empty . That was probably where things went wrong .There were a total of two tables occupied 1 waitress Kim and a girl flowing her around with a tablet . Doing nothing . Head in tablet . I was looking to try different food . Never been here before as I'm on vacation .i order seafood crepes my guest orders blackened haddock . We ordered our beverages and they eventually came . Well we ordered after about 30 mins of just sitting there waiting while the table of six got priority treatment and we were ignored . Maybe we were not dressed fine enough as we been traveling in the car all day . So after another 30 mins after placing our order 2 and 1/4 pieces of zucchini bread appeared . And maybe another 30 mins pass and the entrees come out . There is very little food . We were hungry . Even my guest said I'm still hungry after eating . This was far from fine dining . The place is small and run down . One cook and waitress I'd guess . Maybe a married couple ? Maybe this is high class for the area ?! Any way the seafood crepes were all mini shrimp with one scallop each . They were stuck together so I'd assume it was frozen when stuffed in the crepe which was really not as it was baked in a a seafood watery soup so the crepe just fell apart ! Both meals were horrible shame on this cook for serving this ! Disappointing to say the least but more disappointing than that was horrendous attitude of the waitress Kim ! All three employees were rude ! Snobby ! What gives them the right . Respect your customers for patronizing your business ! Without them you would be nothing . Excellent food! What a find. Traveling from OH to PEI. Loved the quirky style of the restaurant decor! Fun and lots to see in every "nook and cranny" of the place. Our lunch was so good ( me - seafood crepes and Husb- broiled haddock ) that instead of desert we had the fish tacos! All was fantastic! The house made creamy garlic dressing was delicious. Met chef and he could not have been more gracious. He was concerned that we were disappointed in our entree when we ordered a third. lol I explained that the meals were fine - just soooo good. We arrived Saturday at 630, we did not have a reservation but they accommodated us at the bar. The waitress was very kind, funny and efficient throughout. The Meal started with free fresh Zucchini bread fresh out of the oven, which was great. The food here is good and the portions are large. The appeal lies in the charm of the place itself. It's very earnest in what it does. It sort of reminds me of the restaurant in the book 'Empire Falls' - a true American restaurant in the heart of Maine. read more

Drove by it a few times but decided to pop in for a late lunch today -- very glad we did. We tried the oysters rockefeller, french onion soup, seafood crepes, and chicken prosciutto. Everything was expertly made. Plenty of cream and butter, glad we don't live nearby, but it was a worthy indulgence. Gave in and had dessert too, blueberry cheesecake and maple creme brulee. I chose this place after a long day off road. It was definitely good. My husband ordered a fish burger and enjoyed it. He said it wasn't the best but was good. I ordered fish tacos, which I enjoyed. You get good quantity for the money. The people were really nice. As usual, we ate outside in our car. They're one of the few places that will give you creme brûlée to go (my favorite dessert.) They warned me it wouldn't be pretty. It wasn't bad, but as a creme brûlée obsessed individual who makes her own, I can point out that it wasn't as smooth as it should be and was more thick and creamy instead of that subtle light almost silky creamy custard it should be. It tasted good but missed the texture. I WOULD eat here again. What's awesome is the vast selection. read more

Amazing gem tucked away on Rt9! When we walked in, we were greeted by the chef putting the finishing touches on his 12 layer chocolate cake , so of course we saved room for a slice.... Hubby had the trout special and I had the baked haddock with seafood ( CHUNKS of lobster....) . The vegetable medley was actually one he prepared, vs the usual frozen mix... everything was perfectly seasoned...if I ever pass this way again, I would definitely stop by!!! read more

Forget Calais, take the 12 minutes to get out of town and enjoy world food here at the end of Route 9, in a place you were never expect tasteful food, from a turkish entree called Shish Taouk (a chicken dish marinated nothing short of amazing) to seafood crepes. This place is like Maine : never judge a book by its cover. The outside may not appear inviting, but walk inside and feel the warmth of excellent food, a delicious cocktail list and superb service. I highly recommend the Sweet Potato and Crab Poutine (A Maine twist with sweet potato fries topped with a ginourmous amount of crab meat, mozzarella cheese & gravy). This place is worth the detour. The reviews say to not judge a book by its cover and that is so true! I stopped here for a late lunch on my way to Bangor and was craving some kind of cheesy pasta dish. The reviews were outstanding so I decided to give it a shot. The decor seems like it is trying to be upscale Italian mixed with eclectic Maine (just visit the women's room and read the posters on the wall) but it was cozy and not at all what I expected when I walked through the doors. Waitress was nice, but quiet, and gave a few suggestions but was not able to get too descriptive for me. I ended up placing an order and then changed my mind to the lobster mac & cheese and she was nice enough to switch that for me, so I appreciated it. But be warned! The menu is HUGE and there are a lot of options for you to choose from so if you find it hard to make a decision (like me), you should start by deciding if you are in the mood for Greek, Italian, Thai, American, or just apps before you even open the menu. To start they brought out homemade tomato basil bread with butter in a cute bread pan. I thought the bread pan was a nice touch. The bread was very warm and had good flavor. You definitely could taste the tomato and it was so soft and not tough or chewy. The lobster mac & cheese came out shortly after and it was piping hot! Like, oil bubbling on the top hot. Overall the dish was good with a TON of lobster in it. The lobster seemed like it came in frozen / not from a local distributor but I could be wrong. Regardless that did not stop me from eating half of it. The sauce was cheesy and slightly oily, not the creamy, rich sauce I was hoping for. The garlic bread was just that, garlic bread, and after the delicious tomato basil bread I had, I would have traded the garlic bread in for another slice of tomato basil bread. Overall I would not get the lobster mac & cheese again. I wasn't planning on staying for dessert by the waitress brought over the dessert menu and I was tempted by all the treats on it. The reviews told me to get the blueberry pie and the waitress said they are known for their deconstructed apple pie, but knowing blueberries are out of season and my dislike for apples, I went with the maple creme brulee. The maple creme brulee was delicious. My only complaint was that the sugar top was very thin and not crunchy / did not crack under my spoon. Other than that, it had good flavor and was mostly smooth and not all that gritty. The berries on top were a nice touch (wish there were more) and I probably would order it again. Price wise it was more than I expected for the Calais area but after the meal I understood why. The presentation is on point and the flavors are there and it truly seemed like a home cooked type of place. Overall: starter bread: amazing lobster mac & cheese: ok, would not order again creme brulee: would order again I look forward to going back and trying other things on the menu. read more

Just moved up this way & based on previous reviews, decided to give it a try when in Calais to get my Maine driver's license. Super friendly chef/owner, warm atmosphere & oh the food! Just when I thought I'd be cooking at home forever! My escargot was perfect.. garlicky & buttery. The seafood crepes were rich & loaded with shrimp & scallops. My husband had the onion battered green beans, which he devoured & a mushroom Swiss burger. I didn't hear any complaints! Though we were really very full, we couldn't resist sharing the maple creme brûlée.. crunchy sugar top & creamy light, maple custard. .. to die for! We're over an hour away & it's crazy cold out but we'll definitely make the trip back & won't need an excuse for the drive. read more
