Long overdue review. We hadn't tuned our piano in, like, a decade. We also had some broken piece that the last tuner couldn't fix bc the part had to come from Korea or something and it would've been cost-prohibitive, so it was jerry-rigged for the sustain pedal to get get by, but it was still clearly not working. Asked Nori for an estimate, which was reasonable and explained about the needed repair. He gave a ballpark, which I believe he came in under. ANNNNDDDD he was able to fix our piano, FINALLY! Nori was very very professional. Being Asian household, you know we don't wear shoes inside. He brought his own indoor shoes to change, which I really appreciated. ( Don't need to wipe the floor after he left ). The piano was passed on to me and it has not been tuned for more than 10 years. He explained everything in detail. He had to do just regular tuning, which I could understand (10+ years). After working on my piano for 4+ hours, I would be ready to leave as soon as I finished the job. What impressed me is when he put the cover back on. He played the piano and noticed the noise when he played. He took the cover off and looked for it. To my ear , I can't hear anything different . It's been over 10 years since I've had my piano tuned. Finally, I made an appointment with Nori to have my piano tuned. I found him on Yelp! He posted his prices which were very reasonable. The first visit took several hours because Nori was very thorough as he checked/examined the piano. I appreciated that he posts the time allotted for each part of the service. He sends reminders via email which makes it easier for me to remember to schedule an appointment. Also, texts a few days before the actual appointment. Nori is very professional and respectful. Nori is a detail oriented professional that obviously cares a lot about his craft. I couldn't recommend him enough. I initially hired him just to bring my 35 year old Yamaha upright back in tune. While taking it apart he pointed out other areas with the action that could use repairs due to normal wear and tear. I took his advice even though it was going to cost quite a bit more than just the tuning, but the results speak for themselves. I was shocked how much better the piano played. I used to find myself having a lot issues controlling dynamics playing, and I had just chalked it up to poor technique and touch. Now I know the condition of the piano played a non-trivial role. In an attempt to reconnect with my love of playing, I had a tuner come but he said I needed a piano technician to fix some of the issues I had on the piano. Apparently if you let a piano just sit there untuned and unplayed for years, things just deteriorate which does affect how a piano sounds and plays. I can't say it was particularly easy to find a piano technician in this town, especially on Yelp! I just happen to come upon Nori's website in a Google search and saw he was trained at a Yamaha academy in Japan. His fees were straightforward and he's local. Nori patiently explained to me the work my piano needed which included tuning, regulation, voicing and repairing of the issue with my sustain pedal. I won't say I totally know what all those things are but regulation had to do with the alignment of my keys (and they were at different heights), voicing had to do with how the hammers were hitting the strings and the quality of the sound after it strikes (and yes, I noticed it doesn't sound as even in brightness and softness like before), etc. I also had several sticky keys. Nori got to work and he worked hard for about 4 hours. For voicing, he literally sat there filing each and every hammer until they were right. He charged me the most reasonable rate on earth for all the work (!) and threw in the fixing of the sticky keys for free. And it turned out the issue with my pedal wasn't in the pedal itself but in another part of the piano that was affecting how the pedal worked. I did have to leave for an appointment toward the end so he kept working while I was away. When I returned home to try the piano -- OMG -- I can only say Nori restoring my piano changed a big part of my life by reigniting my love for playing and classical music. The keys feels amazing with just the right stiffness, none of them stick, and the sound is beautiful. The voicing really allows me to play with some texture. Nori is like a piano surgeon. I spent a couple weeks trying to find someone who offered piano voicing and hammer maintenance -- all of the highly rated vendors in my area said they only offered tuning services. I reached out to Nori and he was willing to arrange to make the longer trip to work on my 40 year old Yamaha G3. I am exceedingly pleased with his work. He was very clear and communicative in scheduling the work and laying out the probable cost based on the information I provided him. He was prompt and on time for the appointment, despite the longer travel distance through California traffic. He thoroughly diagnosed the piano and walked me step-by-step through what he was going to do, and how -- and even went deep into specifics of why he made certain pedal adjustments to match our specific flooring. Afterwards he showed me the results of his four and a half hours of work, and as we tested out the piano I couldn't believe the improvement in how it sounded. Voicing and refinishing the hammers removed the occasional metallic notes. He fixed a few of the dampeners so phrases are so much clearer and distinct. I had no idea the piano was as muffled as it was, and the difference is night and day. Nori briefly mentions that he's a Yamaha Certified Piano Technician in his bio, but that one-line description doesn't fully describe the dedication and skill required to succeed in the long, intense, and rigorous training program in Kakegawa. My first time with Nori and I really enjoyed it. It seems that there's two kinds of piano tuners, the grumpy old guy who won't talk and the overly impressed with himself guy who just won't shut up. I'm happy to say communication with Nori was a pleasure. We coordinated via text and e-mail and in all cases the communication was timely and clear. He spent a lot of time with the piano getting it dialed in. Especially as his price is a little lower than the going rates. He's no wham-bam thank you ma'am as are some low-ballers. Where's the last star? He did a lot more voicing than I expected and while I appreciate the extra work, he MIGHT have over needled a few of the hammers. They'll probably firm up a bit with some more playing so we'll see. The tuning itself is perfect. Every note is spot on and intervals are true.
