I am a Latina of African descent with coarse unrelaxed hair. For two years I have been caring for my hair getting it healthy again by cutting all the damaged hair off (aka the big chop) and avoiding chemicals. Now it's in the best health it's ever been since my childhood years. I've been wanting to do a blowout for some time but have been apprehensive of trusting my healthy hair with anyone else in fear of them damaging it with heat. Heat damage is irreversible and ruins your natural curl pattern so all my hardwork could've easily been undone. Before having my hair blown out, I spoke with the owners and stylist at the salon about my concerns. They were very understanding and assured me that there wouldn't be any heat damage to my hair and are very knowledgeable working with natural coarse hair. They didn't try to convince me to put a relaxer in it and even stated that the texture doesn't determine if it's good or bad when the hair is healthy. That right there let me know that I was in good hands. And I was! My hair is very thick so it requires a lot of patience to work through. From the shampoo to conditioning, I was in heaven with having my scalp massaged without all the heavy handed pulling and tugging. Even the blow out was skillfully done without my scalp and ears being burned or small clouds of smoke rising up from the hair. This was what I was used to from before which had caused the heat damage to my already then chemically processed hair. They offer you beverages and the black/white ambience is very trendy, comfortable and welcoming. The owners who are a husband and wife team were very nice, accommodating and confident in the quality of their services. They have been in the hair game for many years and I have to say that I wish I knew about them sooner. I was so excited about the results! My hair still looked and felt healthy after the blow out. I couldn't keep my fingers out of my hair because it was still very soft. As for their rates, it didn't break the bank as their prices are very affordable and I am looking forward to pampering myself again at my new favorite salon. I moved to NY just last December and haven't had anyone touch my hair. I manage to trim my ends well enough until my hand slipped and cut too much off in October. I've been embarrassed to wear it down since! Today I walked in with high expectations due to Norma's 25 years of experience and from her previous customers raving reviews of her "magic hands." First she started on my pedicure and manicure. I figured with NYE a few days away I might as well. There is one seat for pedicures so be sure to call ahead or make your appoint! I sat down and her assistant offered me some coffee. I graciously accepted and was pleased to recognize Bustelo in my cup! (The paper coffee cup even had the salon logo on it!) I love details like that! I chose a metallic chrome color and love the look. After my nails dried for a bit Norma led me to the hair wash station. She was gentle yet thorough as we chatted away. Finally for the main event, I sat in THE chair. Norma asked me how short I wanted my trim and she really listened to my concerns. I regrettably went SILVER two winters ago and am still recuperating what used to be luscious locks. Having told her all this she assured me that her hands are magic (they are) and that all I really need is to trim the bleached hair off. After a good blow dry and curling my ends for a more polished look I couldn't help but smile from ear to ear. My hair looked SO shiny and I still had some length to boast! I have been doing my hair since I was 12 years old. Now 37 and going from brown to red to to black to blonde I completely damaged my hair. I went from full curly locks to basically no hair. Norma has been working on my hair since November and it looks healthier than ever! :) She uses good product which don't damage your hair and takes her time and really cares for each of her clients. I went there the first time and although Norma was there she didn't offer to do my curly type dry hair. So I waited for one of her hairstylist to arrive. She did a good job. I went back and her hairstylist was no longer thereit was just Norma. I felt.."great who better than the owner to work on my hair" everything was great up tO the point of drYing my hair. My hair was not blow dried correctly so she left the roots damp making my type of hair puffy and frizzy. She's a nice lady but she's not skilled with all hair types. Please stay away if you have naturally curly hair. I should've known at my first visit when she made me wait for the other hairstylist to arrive while she swept the floors to her salon. Her regular nail polish stays on for 2 weeks, not just a few days like at the cheap nail salons. What I appreciate most is her hygienic precautions. I had the pleasure of getting my hair cut and styled by Norma over the weekend. I had put off getting my hair cut for quite a while so i had a lot of damaged hair. I appreciated the fact that Norma was able to take care of the damage without taking too much length. Norma was knowledgeable and gave me some great tips for a hair care regime. The Salon itself is clean and very well organized. This was my second time at the Salon. The first was a very late walk-in for hair cut for a Special needs person i work with. Norma and Barbaro were so friendly and accommodating. They made sure my buddy and i were taken care of. Barbaro offered us some Coffee & Hot Chocolate [which were both great] and made sure we were comfortable while we wait. So happy to have found a place like Norma's. I got spoiled in Thailand with the detail and non-rushed atmosphere for mani/pedi. I hate feeling like my feet are being scrubbed like a kitchen sink. As a result I tend to have callouses and the like because I haven't found a place that makes me feel like a valued customer. Until I went to Norma on Riverdale. It's the closest thing to Thailand that I have found. She doesn't rush you or tap you foot to move it or push it back in the water or set a 10 minute timer or go so fast you feel like you got jipped. I am a forever customer now. I finally found a place where I don't feel like there is disdain in touching my feet. She takes her time, is oh so gentle, and offers me tea. No assembly line here folks. No tip demands. Just good old fashioned customer service. What a breath of fresh air! I'm forever hooked. The polish lasted longer than any pedi I've ever had. Wow is all I can say. Went to this salon for the first time today. My previous hair stylist left from another salon so was on the hunt for new salon. I was greeted by both Norma and her husband when I came in. Very nice salon, although small. Very clean also. Before she shampooed my hair, she sat me in her chair and asked me how I wanted my hair cut and styled. After looking at my hair, Norma noticed that my hair was not cut right previously. She suggested how to cut it so it would grow in right. Well, Norma took her time and after 1 hour in the chair, my hair was done! It looked so much better than when I walked in. Very happy and would recommend this salon. You won't be sorry. When I left, Norma and her husband said goodbye and gave me a brochure about the salon and said"come back soon." When I got home, I read the brochure and saw that as a senior I get a 10% discount which unfortunately I didn't get, but now I know for next time. If getting wash, cut and blow be prepared to spend $65 or more which to me is a little pricey. They don't give price quotes over phone which I was unhappy about. Mani and pedis which they also give is $40 which is like a high end salon and they also have only 1 chair for pedis. Be sure make appointment for any service you want, and if booked ahead of time you get 10% off. Wish I had known. read more
