Pizza was really good. My idea of perfection for this type of pizza would have been a little more dense crust and a little less cheese. Still a 8.5/10 for me. I have never had a 10/10 pizza before for reference. This would probably be a top 10 in MN for me. Check out the pic I posted to drool a little. Don't drive 2 hours to eat it necessarily but don't be afraid to drive a couple extra minutes if you are anywhere close by. Ambiance is pretty sweet. Updated and clean. Big screen tv's inside with pool, darts etc. etc. Outside is a nice open patio with picnic tables and a fire pit, and a covered outdoor area with about 10 booths and a bar. Comfortable crowd for everyone. Saw old dudes with grey beards in leather vests and a group of Wayzata types in polos and flip flops sitting next to each other. Nothing biker bar or divey about this place. Looked to be family/kid friendly. Recommend getting the cheese bread if you want a cheese pizza for a couple bucks less. Detroit is the theme here, and you can be sure you're getting legitimate food. Normally I'm leery about large menus that seem to lack any specialties, but from what I've seen and tasted, it's hard to go wrong. This was our second time at Norm's. It was moderately busy, but there is no sign saying "seat yourself" so we wandered around trying to figure out what to do. Someone finally told us to sit wherever, so we did. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. Others sat, got their drink orders taken, some got their food orders taken. We waited. And waited. People drank, ate, and left. Still we waited. A waitress kept walking by but she never stopped. Finally, she stopped and said she'd be right back with water and menus. We waited. She finally made her way over with three waters and two menus (there were four of us). No mind, we shared menus. Eventually the fourth water made its way to our table. We decided what we wanted. We waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. She finally returned, took our orders and we started waiting again. We waited. And waited. And waited. When the food finally made an appearance, it was good. Then came the final wait. For the check. I got my card out of my wallet, usually a good sign a person is finished and ready to pay. The waitress kept herself busy everywhere but our table. More waiting. I got her attention (I thought) and held my card up. No joy. She looked at me and headed straight for the back, where she disappeared for a long time. More waiting. She came to a nearby table. Could it be? Was it finally our turn? Nope, she turned away from us and walked away. Again. So we continued to wait. She finally came over, said would you like your check, and I said don't even want to see it, just take my card NOW. To make a long story even longer, food is decent, even good. Service was abominable. Horrid. Torturous. A lesson in patience. I must say the waitress was pleasant enough, but SLOW is an understatement. Only go if you are not thirsty or particularly hungry and can spare an hour or two watching your waitress walk by repeatedly. read more

So here's the deal. Norm's Wayside is amazing. Good food, fun casual atmosphere. The Detroit Style pizza is worth traveling across the State for! Its a thick crust deep dish style. Here's the second deal. We had visited many times, probably summer time, on a weekend cruise. So we stopped in on the weekend before Christmas and they have a special, Lutefisk or Swedish meatballs. I had the meatballs, it comes with gravey, mini red potatoes, lefse, and lingonberry sauce. That was a great meal! I am going to try the Lutefisk next chance I get. Took our drink order and, finally, our food order. I think her shift ended cuz we didn't see her again (thank God). The food? Decent. The atmosphere? Not so much. I took my family in and realized that I was heading into a bar and grill. No problem. That is, until I realize we were surrounded by sexual images. There was what was on the screen, and then there what was around on a video game (girls in bikinis jiggling every 60 seconds). And then my son needed to use the men's room and there are posters up of women in wet t-shirts. Guess that means this was a one-time visit. Too bad, as the menu looked good. The Italian Beef we ordered should have had some juice on it, and the nachos only had cheese on top (making the bottom layers topping-less). But thanks for trying. read more

I had to run out to Buffalo tonight, so, after driving by Norm's last weekend, and looking up what Detroit-style pizza is, we were intrigued and decided to give it a shot. After reading leslee's review, I was more than a little apprehensive to go in. But, all the buzz on Google is good, so on a lovely late summer Friday, my friend and I went to Norm's Wayside. Walked in and it was both clean and busy. Not at all scary. Re the service level, since it was a little busy, it took a bit long for things to happen -- we finally did get a waitress and she did bring us a menu. Regardless, perhaps my only significant criticism is that this is not a place to go if you're in a hurry. We ordered fried pickles and a Detroit-style pizza. The fried pickles (spears) were hot and yummy. The only downside is you get your choice of blue cheese or ranch, not both, and there's not quite enough dressing if you like a lot of dressing on your pickles. (Also, there was neither salt nor pepper on the tables, but the pickles were adequately salted -- as Emeril says -- when they were "vunnerable" and fresh out of the fryer) The pizza took a while to cook (as stated above, it was busy but not super-busy) and it came to the table hot and fresh. They even took a combo pizza and changed up the ingredients a bit (I don't care for ham on my pizza) without complaining. The two of us devoured a small -- the small could easy feed three if you aren't ravenous eaters and also order an appetizer... by the time we got down to the last 2 slices, we were already getting quite full (but we ate them anyway.... :-) ) Norm himself was there. He came in and out of the kitchen and office and talked to a few patrons, though he didn't come around to every table to say hi and ask how things were. Regardless, the waitress was consistently checking in with us. One more criticism, is that there is only one free refill with a soda. I can see that at the bar (unless one was a designated driver) but not eating at a table. With the price of fountain soda, this perhaps is a little stingy. Another positive observation --- we saw bikers eating pizza in the restaurant. I never see bikers eat at a bar, unless the food is really good, and I must concur, the food was good. In addition, a lot of pizzas were being carried out as we were waiting for our food and eating. So, was it worth the special trip? Probably. Will I go there again when I am in the area? It will be on my list! If I could give 4 1/2 stars instead of 5, I would, the little tiny faults are things that are easily correctable. Norm's has great food but lacks great service. We sat down and waited at least 15 minutes before getting up and leaving. No one greeted us and the servers walked by us without acknowledging us. This place is probably become one of the worst places I've ever eaten at in a long time. Years ago and my daughter worked there, it was a pretty good place. My wife and I just went there this evening and we were served burnt nachos, and when we ask for extra salsa, because the miniature cup that came with it didn't have enough nearly to cover the amount of burnt nachos, they were actually going to charge me extra!. When I asked I just to pay for our two drinks and leave, they charged me $28 for one tall beer and one mixed drink, apparently the workers are held to no standards one bit whatsoever. We live in Buffalo and go to Norm's frequently. Great food, great service, even when they're very busy. I have to say, I find one of the reviews below by "Andy" quite suspect. We know all the staff there and I seriously cannot imagine any of them speaking to a customer they way he said they were. Unless the customer was significantly rude and out of line first. So, take that one with a grain of salt. And then go to Norm's and try the fish and chips - so good!! read more

Having been born in MI I'm familiar with Detroit Style Pizza. Norm's was ok at best. The server was great and friendly but the pizza was just mediocre. We went on a Friday night with another family so there was prob 4 adults and 4 kids. The only seating available was right in front of the live music which any other time would be awesome but too loud for the kids. We got the large cheese bread which was huge and I prob should've ordered the small or none. The cheese bread tastes pretty similar to the pizza so if you're ordering pizza maybe skip the cheese bread. Myself and 1 other person got abnormally sick after eating here. read more

Really enjoyed our experience. In town for hockey tourney and Norms was minutes from the arena. Outside leaves you wondering what your getting into but the inside is a very nice atmosphere. Great spot. Looks a little rough from the highway, but don't be scared away. Lee in mind that it's a "biker bar" and you'll definitely get that feel when you enter (and especially if you visit the men's restroom ). The food is great and comes in plentiful helpings. And I love the original items on the menu. The jalapeno bacon is amazing! But the waitstaff really need to be more visible or come around more often. It took a long time to get a fork and napkin, and my drink only got refilled near the end of our meal. Food was good but service is very bad to me that is a lot of the experience . Last time at this place!!! 3rd time I've left unhappy with service. We were there on a Sunday at noon. We had five adults. The place was packed and they had the last 3 booths and one long table roped off. We asked if it would be ok to sit back there. We are just having a Bloody Mary. It's nice to finally have a great place that you feel comfortable bringing your kids, but it's nice to feel like the Adults are getting a little time out too. We go there almost every weekend for breakfast, Im totally hooked on the HANGOVER HELPER!!! Im not sure what they do to it but its great! And my 5 and 3 year old are in love with the pancakes, the call it " The Eye PLace" because of the awesome sculpture out front:) It took a few trips to get the old Boot Night images out of head but with norms bad ass taste in all things awesome he's made it a blast every time we go! Had the worst service here. It took a very long time to get drinks, we were seated at a table, server checked back once and it was from 10 feet away looking over to see if we needed drinks. One member of our party had to go to the bar to get a drink since no server could be found. We went to the bar two times to ask for our check. When we finally got the check we remarked that the bar was understaffed. The server said "what do you want me to do about it?" We told her we just wanted our bill and she should have checked on us. She continued to be rude and we told her to do a better job. She said we were bad customers and finally went to get our bill. When she came back we told her we didn't appreciate how she was talking to us. She said she didn't appreciate our attitude and said maybe we shouldn't be "dicks". I've never seen a server so rude and disrespectful to a customer. She could have said, sorry for the delay and we would have been fine. As it was we told her we wanted change and we weren't leaving a tip. She said "I don't want a tip from you." This restaurant has good food but it is very understaffed and the service is poor. Given the fact that the owner has a reputation for being, shall we say, difficult I'm not surprised that his staff is this rude.
