Lingonberry crepes are good. if there are tour busses coming in be prepared to wait, be crowded, and tourists receive preference over local customers...if you want to order a special you may have to wait until the bus is served to see if there is enough left. A once proud and personal restaurant has fallen. They really don't care any more. The ham is pressed deli, the waffles are about as thick as a quarter and don't taste any better. Hollandaise sauce tastes as if it sits for days then is nuked on order, thick and disgusting. What a terrible experience this was, complaints are answered with "well there just isn't anything I can do about that, I'm sorry" in the fake Scandinavian accent delivered by the bespectacled little old lady in the Quaker dress There is some comic value I guess. They charge outrageous prices to unwary tourists. $20.00 for a pie plus $6.00 more for the "deposit" on the tin. I don't get all these positive reviews for this place. WARNING: DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING ONLINE. I ordered lefse online to ship to my dad for his birthday in August. There is no option to choose a parcel delivery service or mailing option, they just send it Priority via USPS. It got delayed in shipment and by the time it arrived, it was moldy and inedible. I immediately emailed the manager with pictures and asked for a replacement. Fast forward two months and all I have to show for the $40 I spent is an extremely long email thread between the manager and myself where I was told I needed to submit a claim with the post office before anything would be done. I asked her multiple times to submit the claim as I am not the party who has a contract with the post office- the sender is. After she refused to make the claim multiple times, I attempted to submit the claim to find that I was not eligible to submit the claim- the sender and recipient are and I was not going to make my dad jump through hoops to receive a birthday present. She finally submitted the claim and it was denied. Instead of offering any way to make it right, she just told me "Sorry for this turn out". I was not offered a refund or a replacement. I'm now out $40 and no present for my dad. read more

I bought two whole fresh raspberry pies with whipped topping. They made them special for me while I waited (took only a few minutes) since they didn't have any already made up. If not for that, I probably wouldn't have bought it after I learned of the price. I should say that I've had great individual pieces of pie here. It's mostly my fault that I didn't understand their pricing structure - I was looking at a list of pies that had no prices when I ordered from the person behind the counter, but a quick glance at a different sheet that had a bunch of complicated price listings made me think it would be $11.99. Later, while they made the pie, I studied another price list and realized that it's possible the pie could be $21.99 if it was the larger size. But I figured their default would be the smaller size. So when the pies came out, I was shocked to learn that they were $26.99 each. There was an extra charge for the fresh fruitiness, I think, even though this is the height of raspberry season. I was also surprised when the cashier mentioned the Cool Whip topping. Cool Whip? For $26.99? Then on top of all that, there was an additional $6.00 charge per pie for the pie tin. That's an astounding $33 per pie! The $6 pie tin fee is refundable. We live an hour away and will have an opportunity next summer to return the tins, so that's not too big of a deal for us, but for distant travelers, this could be bad. But most of the above could be attributed to my own poor choices as an uneducated consumer. First, I had no idea a pie could ever be so expensive, so I didn't even think to explore the pricing structure in detail. Second, I could have said "no" once I learned of the price, but having these made on the spot for me, I didn't feel comfortable doing that. I really wish the youngster behind the counter who waited on me would have explained even a tiny bit about the pricing, but I can't blame her. She was actually very cheerful and helpful and probably just thought I knew what I was doing. In fact, I wouldn't even have written this review - figuring I'm more to blame for my poor buying choice than the Norski Nook - but the pie itself is a disaster! It was great when we got it home and had our first serving - yes, the raspberries were still somewhat frozen, but that was kind of nice. This morning, though, after pulling the leftover pie from the refrigerator (I had wrapped it nicely in plastic wrap with lots of toothpicks on top of the whipped topping) it was swimming in fruit juice. The crust was soaked and the berries were mushy. It's completely unappealing now. I haven't talked to our friends who we gave the other pie to, so I don't know how theirs was. But like us, they're a smaller family that will have to eat their pie over several days, so I suspect they'll be spooning out raspberry mush and soggy bits of crust before long. read more

Awesome food and friendly service. We were on our way to a wedding further north in Wisconsin and - although the restaurant was packed - our waitress was very accomodating of our rush. The pie is fabulous and the only place I've ever experienced where the serving sizes are too big to finish, no matter how much you love dessert. We bought lefse and snickerdoodles on the way out and wrapped them in a nice package for a hostess gift that evening. Both were a huge hit. I once had a Jesuit English teacher in high school who was extremely demanding as well as exceedingly ironic. He would often poke fun at us and forbid any student to say that they "liked" one of the books which we were studying. His overall attitude was A. I absolutely don't care whether you like the book and B. Who are you to judge? In light of the above preface I will proceed with the evaluation of Norske Nook. The food is incredible for people who enjoy that kind of food. My son had the hot turkey sandwich on homemade bread. I had the the meatballs and mashed potatoes rolled in a lefse, much like a burrito with gravy poured on top. My sons turkey sandwich was extremely short on turkey. It gave me the impression that the maker utilized a digital scale calibrated by NASA, and is permitted to allocate to diner exactly 3.215 ounces of turkey. His hot turkey sandwich meal was exactly comparable to the 10,000 hot turkey sandwich meals that are available at any given time, at any given truck stop, and at every given Mom and Pa, and college cafeteria across this great nation. The mashed potatoes within the lesfe rolled up sandwich were absolutely superb. They had the fresh and tasty flavor one would expect of real mashed potatoes as well as the reassuring occasional lump. The meatballs are an entirely different story. They are exceedingly large to be inserted in the lefse Making it difficult to gracefully cut them without tearing the whole conglomerate apart. The flavor reminded me exactly like the meatballs I had when I was four years old, sitting in front of the television, on a typical boring day, one Michigan summer, watching Kimba the White Lion, fresh from a Chef Boyardee SpaghettiOs can. The texture was over ground and mushy, flavor accented with a slight black pepper and trace beefy liver profile. I proceeded to enjoy my lesfe rolled sandwich anyway, but found myself wondering as I was engaged in its consumption whether it was the visual novelty of this dish that was making up for its utmost pedestrian and common flavor. Now to the pies. I know America, I love America, I also have issues with America with regards to her caloric intake. I don't understand why anybody would need to eat any enormous piece of cookies and cream pie. I ordered the lingonberry and apple pie and the crust was undercooked. I ate, and ate, fork load after fork load until once again I caught myself thinking, what in the world am I doing gobbling down all these exceedingly cloyingly sweet, apples, berries and soft crust. The glowing reports about the pies makes one wonder about the discriminatory tastes of the average desert eating American. Is it the undoubtably delicious flavor of these unique pies that excite or the sheer reckless indulgence that they represent. A comparison that comes to mind is Gatlinburg Tennessee versus the Detroit Institute of Arts. They both have plenty to see without question,but how edified will one be after the wax museums down in the ole South versus the Detroit Institute of Arts studying chiaroscuro on a Caravaggio? I hope half of America doesn't take me to be the undoubtably elitist that I am. I simply ask myself time and time again, where is the discriminatory power of this great nation going. read more

Chili was good on this rainy, chilly day. It was super hearty and flavorful. The Reuben was tasty and spinach & chicken lefse was mediocre. The lefse tasted like a dried out tortilla. The chicken was a little tough. The spinach, chicken, and mandarins were not evenly dispersed. I started off with too much chicken and barely any spinach and then ended up with no chicken and too much spinach. Nice diner. Friendly service. The Scandinavian specials are marked on the menu. Lefse is listed several times but I didn't see a definition of what it was. A diner at a neighboring table said it was like a tortilla but the dough is made out of mashed potatoes. (Interesting). We all had breakfast items and were happy and full! The biscuits were very good :) The only negative was a dirty table when we sat down. The manager saw me wiping and I asked for extra napkins, but she never acknowledged the table should have been more thoroughly cleaned to begin with. Right across the street is a little antique shop. I've had pies from Norske Nook before, but never at Norske Nook. I was on my way from Minneapolis to Chicago, and hit the Osseo area around lunchtime, and had to finally try it out. The menu is big, with lots of lefse options. The food itself was okay, but I think I ordered the wrong thing. My friends both ordered entrees that included mashed potatoes (homemade) that looked really good. The corned beef also looked decent, instead of dried hunks of saltiness. It looked fresh, juicy, and tender. But of course, you don't really go there for the food, you go there for the pie! They have at least 20 kinds to choose from (by the slice or a whole pie to go). I tried the blueberry cream cheese today, and it was divine. I'll probably dream about it over the next week. There was a mountain of blueberries on top, which was a little intimidating, but totally wonderful. The berries weren't overly sweetened, and had a nice, subtle flavor in combination with the cream cheese layer at the bottom. The crust was a graham cracker one, my favorite. Mmmmm.... I've also tried the sour cream raspberry (really good), root beer float (yep, and much better than you'd expect), and the cream cheese pecan (on the rich side). The only downfall of not living in the area and ordering an entire pie means that you have to pay the $6 deposit for the pie tin and probably not get it back, which definitely kicks the price up a little too high for pie. read more

Good pies! I've had the peach, banana cream, and strawberry-rhubarb and those are great. You can buy a pie to go but you are charged for the pie-tin in the form of a deposit which is refundable when you return. That can be difficult. I have been coming to the Osseo location for 20 years with great food and service, but today I thought I was somewhere else. Our waitress was rude. Never even asked us if we wanted water. Had to find someone else for that. It was not busy, but she brought the wrong soup and never even acknowledged it. It was like she really didn't want to be there working and she was taking it out on us. I heard another woman by the pie case say the same thing. I ordered pie and it came looking like it was scraped off the bottom of the leftovers. I had to dig to find a piece of crust and it was soggy. I mentioned this at the checkout and not even an I am sorry about it. 5 stars though to the Rice Lake location. Next time we stop there. Always have had great service there. read more

I love the Norske Nook! I only get there about every 5 years, and wish it was more often. Local, homemade Norwegian Food. Today I had a delicious salmon lefse wrap and a slice of fresh Raspberry pie. Because I don't get there very often, I just keep getting the raspberry because it is a slice of heaven. Pies all around: one granddaughter had chocolate mint, one had orange dreamsicle, and my daughter had fresh straweberry, all really great also. We live near there and will not eat there. The few times I have been there the food is bland, the service is terrible- not to mention the outfits! Looking at them makes me lose my appetite! I had not been to the Nook for a long time. We were so hungry for some 'stick to your ribs' country food. What a disappointment. My son had swedish meatballs, he said they taste like cardboard. My family and I went on a cross country road trip from California to Maine (through Glacier National Park) and we ended up at this spot in Wisconsin. My husband and daughter are amateur 'foodies' (they just love food lol) and so we decided we would only eat at local spots and places not available to us back in California. We found this place because of the yelp reviews and the billboards and we liked the 'Scandinavian' food thing. The place was really easy to navigate to and most of the waitresses seemed very friendly (the one we had was neither friendly nor rude, just sort of doing her job). Luckily it was Saturday so kids eat free (yay!), but they didn't have a kids cheeseburger on the menu (the kids menu was sparse and my biggest complaint) other then the kids menu this place was awesome! My husband had a Norwegian meatball bread bowl and LOVED it, my daughter had a kids roast beef lehfse and ate it all (she loves food, but has a small stomach so usually only eats half her plate) and I ordered the Norwegian pancakes with lingonberries which were so very good (slightly thicker crepe?). Overall we were very very impressed and would totally go back there again if we ever found ourselves near Osseo! read more
