My friends and I came in for dinner, but unfortunately, the overall experience was very below average. The meatloaf was bland, and the broccoli was ordered steamed but arrived looking stir-fried. The stir-fried steak did not resemble a stir-fry at all--it looked more like beef stew served over rice. The fried chicken was crispy and well cooked, but it lacked any real seasoning. The mashed potatoes tasted like they came from a box, with chopped potatoes added for texture. Overall, the food needs major improvement. Thorp, WI. If you are on the highway and need a decent meal, this is a good place. The owner is very attentive and friendly. All of the waitresses are friendly, kind, and helpful. They offer a great alternative to roadside fast food. The coffee is good. I ordered something on special and honestly don't even remember what it was, but it tasted like home cooked comfort food. While the dish was not memorable, the welcoming, relaxed ambiance was. I will be back for sure as I'm on this route at least once a year. Some people refer to this place as the Torpedo, but it is actually the Thorpedo, based on the name of the town. OK then, safe travels! read more

Passed this place a 1000 times on the way between Green Bay and MSP and finally stopped. I had a beef and gravy platter with potatoes that was really good. The chicken noodle soup side was to die for... almost wish I would have just ordered a bigger bowl. We visit this establishment every fall during the Thorp Pumpkin Fest. It is reasonably priced, good choices, and hearty portions. Our party of five was served quickly. We all had breakfast items. Hash browns were crispy and pancakes fine. The skillet breakfast was a tad smaller than other places I have been, but good. Toast is not homemade bread, coffee is by the cup (they don't give you the pot at the table) and they are slow to refill ...we had to keep asking. The restroom could use a good cleaning, but usable. Amazing, old fashioned great place to rest and eat after being on the road for hours. We were hoping for some decent coffee and maybe a light meal of some sort, but were so excited about the huge amount of choices on the menu, not to mention breakfast at supper time if you want. The senior regular dinner plate INCLUDED a nice scoop of ice cream for dessert. Who does that!? We stopped here on our way back from MN after Thanksgiving. My girlfriend had gone here about twenty plus years ago. We each had a sandwich with soup and a salad. Our sandwiches were delicious and the fries were REALLY good! I could have eaten a basket of them. If I lived in the area and had a hankering especially for fries this would be the spot! We have always loved this place and stop for food when on Juw 39. Never again. Hot roast beef which we've always claimed was best is not made the same way. Mashed potato very hard - obviously they were reheated. The beef was not from a slow cooked chuck roast as in past. Hard rubbery no flavor. My fiance and I stopped here on our road trip due to the raving reviews on yelp. Atmosphere: Small parking lot. The floor was filthy. The table was sticky and they did not have a lot of the tables cleared off after customers left. You seat yourself. Service: I don't know who our server was. We had a person seat us and ask us for our drinks, a person bring the drinks and take the order, and then a different person bring the food and the check. It took us longer to get the check than the entire experience. None of the wait staff smiled or seemed to be enjoying life whatsoever. Drinks: My fiance's sprite was the best part of the meal. My coffee was less than lukewarm and I was never asked if I wanted a refill (granted I'm not sure I would have wanted one if it was as cold as the first cup). Food: My fiance got the half order of biscuits and gravy. I ordered the eggs benedict. When I was asked how I would like my eggs, I should have changed my ordered. Eggs benedict comes with poached eggs.....duh. I said over easy so they didn't have a panic attack. Everything was brought to the table in 10 minutes, which is fast, but it was all cold? The only thing warm on my plate was the eggs. The bacon was cold like it had been sitting forever and was chewy vs. crispy. The hollandaise sauce had no flavor and the hashbrowns were stone cold. The gravy for the biscuits was disgusting. It was cold and congealed and had no seasoning, it tasted like it was out of a can. However, my server said that even though that's the typical way the potatoes are cooked and she happily took my skillet back after checking on me. i rarely, if ever, return food but i was grateful for their attempt to give me a good experience. even so, the skillet came back with hot, melted cheese on it, something i explicitly did not ask for! i didn't have the heart to send it back again. the place was clean, laid back, and a good break from the road. read more

Thorpedo serves typical diner fare, and they do it very well. I had dinner here twice during my stay in the area. The homemade soups are a high point. Service is friendly and prompt. I had steak one evening and pork chops the next. I ordered the steak medium and it was served rare, but they responded to my request to have it cooked more without batting an eyelash. It came back quickly and it was delicious. Not like Cattlemen's or Ruth's Chris back home, but for a family restaurant it was much better than I would have expected and a great value for the price. So were the pork chops. Thorpedo is right off highway 29 in Thorp and is ideal for a meal stop on a road trip. You can't be in such a hurry that you'd go for fast food when you could gas up next door and have real food at Thorpedo. read more

A cut above what I'd expect from a roadside diner -- big portions, good comfort food. Had a turkey bacon wrap and the turkey was carved from a bird, not the non-descript lunch meat variety that is typical. Chicken and dumplings soup had lots of dumplings (spaetzle-like) although the broth was boullion cube quality (which I actually like). If you want hearty, homestyle cooking with reasonable prices ($8.39 for turkey wrap, fries and soup), look no further. read more
