What an amazing place - I hesitate to even review it; but its not going to make it on my business alone (though I promise to try!) The atmosphere is perfection. It has the authenticity of place of any I've walked into in Barcelona or Florence, but it's all Portland. Happy Hour doesn't leave you shaking your head in wonder like at some in this city, where the only difference between Happy Hour and regular hours is the name - not the prices. The patio space doesn't quite measure up in atmosphere to the rest of the place (lighting? glossy black tables?) but I won't quibble here. I've only been there a select few times, but whenever I go to North 45 with a couple of friends it always feels like home. It has a very relaxed atmosphere, complete with international flags & currency on the walls as well as a pin-up board with travel pictures from various patrons. Pretty cool idea! I plan on printing out a couple & posting. I had one of their Belgium beers last time we all went and it was fantastic! Unlike any other beer I've ever had. Fries & beer go a long way here, with their generous portions & fast service. I've also had a burger & B.L.T., both which were superb. North 45 is a great place on 21st. If I lived in Portland, I would be here all of the time. We swung by during happy hour. We had 5 beers, a margarita, and a calamari, and spent less than $40. That was... amazing. When we first arrived, most of the tables were taken or reserved. There was a table by when you first enter the outdoor area that had a purse on it, so we went to sit there. The table next to it was full of snobs who said, "It's reserrrrved." Note, it wasn't officially reserved by the restaurant, just by them. Our Portland friends who we were with were very sweet and said, "okayyyy." and we sat down at the bar. My inner New Jersey wanted to say, "I don't see them." and just sit the heck down. But when in Rome I guess. (Note, next time I'll just sit down because they had ONE extra person show up, and took up an entire table for that? If you see that, you should just sit down!) The waitresses saw what happened and gave us the heads up on a table that had a few ladies getting ready to leave. We appreciated that, as we were able to grab a table quickly after. We only dabbled from the Happy Hour menu, but the food that was ordered around us looked amazing. Like I said, if I lived here, I'd be here all of the time. Let me first start by saying any bar that serves the beer Czechvar/Budvar on draft will always have a special place in my gut as a great place to go drink and eat at. North 45 did no disappoint! Having had about half the beers on their Belgian Beer list I choose to save about an extra 5 bucks, since I was also planning on trying the Bacon Cheese Burger. As for the burger it came on a soft ciabatta roll and was cooked to order. One complaint was the bacon being dry and looked like it had been cooked hours ago. The fries were decent, and came with a really salty cajun sauce that could have done without. My girlfriend had the fish and chips which were incredible. Best fish and chips I had since I went to the Oregon Coast over a year ago. The only reason this place did not get five stars even though they serve my favorite pilsner on tap, I just found it to be a little spendy for such a small little pub. I mean were are talking Blue Hour/Oba draft beer prices. Also I went there during a night where NBA Playoffs were in full force, and they were showing a hockey game on the LCD TV?!?! Fun little joint frequented by many of the locals. Very lively environment with lots of people watching to be had. Weathered photos of the owners various trips around the world and memorabilia stacked up against the walls were great to see. The place just oozes with a vibe that's both warm and friendly. We were seated at a window facing area that was perfect for watching the happy faces of portlanders cruzing by one by one, on one of the very few sunny days in the year. It was as if grunge had made a huge comeback and I should be listening to Nirvana and the Foo Fighters again - all the pretty people in their assorted hues of plaid. Friendly Staff, Excellent Food, fantastic Back Patio. North 45 feels like that home away from home. The staff is extremely friendly and boy can they serve up some excellent food. The drink selection is second to none. Check out the top shelf and ask the bartender to climb the library ladder to get you an excellent whiskey. Parking in this neighborhood can be a nightmare in the evening. Expect to walk a few blocks to find a good place to put the car. I suggest ridding in on the bus or street car to avoid the parking situation. read more

The best of the nicer bars on 21st. It can be hard to get a seat during happy hour or late night weekends. They have a great beer list, decent bar fare, and the patio is just about the best one on the street. This is a great place to stop in for a pint when you don't have any particular yen but to sit in a warm environment and hang with good friends. read more

If I could do less than one star I would! I use to come here all the time with friends because of their patio, recently I went with a friend and he had his service dog with us, I am still in disbelieve how rude the bartender/waitress was who came up to us, we sampled drinks and the lady who was doing the sampling was super nice! However we picked a table to sit at sit down as we are sitting down the waitress runs over and says "I hate to be the bearer of bad news but we don't allow anything except service animals on the patio." My friend who used this service dog was mortified and embarrassed, I immediately said the dog is a service dog, then the waitress very snotty replies back "emotional support animals don't count!" FIRST of all, you don't have disclose what your service animal is used for or if it's esa or service, second of all we said she is service, she wasn't running around barking or anything, she was calmly attached to the person using her like she was suppose to be watching him. I am incredibly mad about how rude the server was then just wait it gets better, after she replies back emotional support animals don't count, I say she is a service dog then then she replies, whatever what do you want?! My friend and I just looked at each other I'm disbelief, I was taken back, then she said again WHAT DO YOU WANT?! ( mad that we were not leaving.) my friend replied back I'm not sure if we know can we have a minute. So she stomped off. I looked at my friends still in shock and said should we spend our money here? Should we go! He shook his head and we left quickly. I have lived in this neighborhood for 6 years, I have never been so pissed at a bar or bartender that I wanted to scream at them. Fuck this bar and discriminating. Flighty server. Amazing patio. All-American vibe. Rumor has it service is slow here. It's true. Slow yet flighty is the norm here. I came for Friday happy hour when the patio was packed so maybe I was asking for it. I ordered a pint of Bilsner beer--meh, tasted like watery Bud lite--and the mole chicken flaunta--very tasty! The mole sauce was a thick consistency speckled with cranberry and dried berries--ZING! The calamari is to die for! The squid is lightly coated with a flakier than usual crust of dough and drizzled with sweet hot sauce. I surmise this lesser doughed-up version is slightly healthier than your regular dough-heavy calamari...but I could be wrong. Back to the server, she was mighty flighty! Shewing us early to clear the table, leaving us for a long time, and closing our tab prematurely as other friends were still trickling in are NOT OKAY. I think we appeased her flightiness by ordering more things after HH to keep the tab open. Still, rude, rude, rude. I will not be back unless I come back with bros--speaks to the atmosphere. Killer pub in the Nob Hill district! We basically drove around Nob Hill & downtown until we came across this place. Good thing because they had a great beer selection! Try the Westmalle Belgian ale. I experienced North 45 for the first time this past weekend, but I found it to be just okay. I ended up having a Coors Light because I found the rest of the beer choices to be too expensive. The menu didn't seem to appetizing to me so I stuck with my one drink. They have a nice patio outside, but they had to make everyone go inside around 10 pm. Which the inside is kind of small so there really wasn't any point in staying since the place was already packed. I like to try places at least once, but I don't think I would go back to North 45 again. read more

This is a good spot to: grab a pint (they rotate and have some steadys), have a mojito, enjoy happy hour, they have good inexpensive options for food and drink. Go for St. Paddy's - and they show some sports, too. Their food is good, NW cuisine, some bit of southern/seafood/UK pub influence, too. A great spot to sit are the window seats/bar top---great for people watching on 21st. Staff tries hard. Sometimes a miss or neglect here and there when they get busy. Although neighbor to the apparent bro epicenter of Northwest Portland that is Silver Dollar, North 45 has thankfully managed to maintain a more low-key atmosphere free from all the posturing and jäg bombs occurring mere feet away. It is by far my favorite bar in the area as it succeeds on multiple fronts including ambience, service, drinks, food, and space. If you're in a date-y mood, the interior offers a warm candlelit environment with two-tops lining one side of the wall. You may be a tad close to the couple next to you but not too close that you're hampering the other guy's mojo. There are only a few spots available for groups inside, so on cold days it's better to get there early. The outdoor patio is great for large groups. There are several picnic style tables as well as their own bar out back. For the colder months there is a canopy to shield you from the rain and glorious islands of warmth provided by heat lamps. It's also much quieter out back and can be a welcome getaway from the bustle inside. Drinks are fairly standard with 4 or 5 beers on draft and a full bar. They also make fancy Spanish coffees which are always entertaining to watch. The food, though, is pretty amazing and is one of the main reasons I keep coming back. The flautas are a must! These oversized taquitos smothered in mole are crispy, hot, and mind-blowingly good. I've also had the mac and cheese which was super cheesy and gooey, the way that it should be. And the fish and chips which came with 2 LARGE, flaky pieces of fish, a tangy dipping sauce, and perfectly cooked french fries. With limited staff service can be a tad slow, but overall I love coming here and have never been disappointed! read more

A friend of mine has been whining about how I don't spend time on the west side. Every time we talk, he tells me about some sort of magical bar he's discovered, some little "it doesn't FEEL west side" west side spot. I always counter with, "Those sound like places I have to put on pants for..." and bow out (Sans-pants Utopia!), but he has been particularly persistent about North 45. Although smaller than I thought it would be, it manages to feel cozy with lots of breathing room. The bar is absolutely beautiful, with amazing lighting, and a wall of alcohol (three cheers for the Wall-cohol?) that comes complete with a library chair for navigation purposes. How can I resist that? Quick answer: I cannot. The happy hour menu had just what everyone in my posse wanted. $5 margaritas, $3.50 pilsners, $2.50 fries and assorted sliders, salads, mac and chi...that paired with a solid menu was plenty for me but there was more. MUSSELS!!! They have six kinds of mussels, each steamed in different broths and served with your choice of fries or bread. We tried the coconut lemongrass and the crispy pancetta and roasted shallots. Both were delicious but the crispy pancetta was a particular kind of knock out. Fist pumps across the board. And lastly, the staff. We were alone for the majority of our time there (maybe we got there early...) but business started to pick up the later it got and we were always well taken care of. So, good food and drinks with a friendly staff? That makes North 45 a place worth putting pants on for. read more

Damnit Portland! Can't a guy go to a place and get good service two times in a row? Went in today just as it opened, and opted to check out the well mentioned patio. We were the first ones in. We were greeted, and our drink orders taken. I asked for a glass of water in addition to what I was drinking and was informed that the water was self-serve. Water is self-serve in fast food joints, and restaurants in Portland. Do not get the concept. The water jug all the way on the opposite of the patio was pretty much empty by the way. She has to bring one drink back to me, is the extra glass of water really that much of a hardship? It takes awhile but eventually our server gets back with our drinks and we order. Takes awhile to get the food, a little longer than I would have thought the first order of the day would take, but eh... not super excessive. She dropped off the food and that was the last we saw of her for a long, long while. In fact eventually there were about 4 or 5 tables of people i the back, but hardly any sign of our server. Finally after we had been done for awhile she came back to ask if everything was alright. Doesn't it sort of defeat the purpose to ask this when the customer is handing you their credit card? The burger I ordered medium rare came back medium well, and it was definitely edible but a bit disappointing. Our server by the way was super pleasant when she was around, cute as can be, but just, well... absent. Sorry, telling it like it was. Really great old-world feel to this pub. It's not swamped with TVs on every wall but they do have one well positioned flat screen for convenient soccer-game viewing (I'd call it football like you should but that might confuse all the red-blooded Americans reading this review). Their food specialty is mussels and they have at least half a dozen variations that come with very tasty frites. I tried the Provencal which has diced tomatoes, fresh lemon and herbs de Provence. It was delicious. The mussels are very fresh, so fresh you can almost taste the ocean. I love it. They have a decent happy hour, a solid line up of beers and my dinner date had their burger which was also really tasty so even though mussels are their "thing", I'm pretty sure they know how to cook everything above par. read more

Stopped in here for a quick drink with some friends on a very very rainy day. Too bad, it would have been cool to hang out on the back patio! We got here right around happy hour starting, which runs daily from 4 to 6pm....unless it's Monday then it's all night! Great if you have a case of the Mondays! I ordered the 9MM to drink. A mix of Bulleit bourbon, orange bitters and Tuaca. Served up. I was very pleased with this drink. Also got the caprese skewers off the happy hour menu. So if you have ever had a caprese salad then you know...it's mozzarella, tomato, basil...usually olive oil and black pepper, maybe a drizzle of balsamic. They serve this up on little skewers. Nice and light and refreshing. I always feel a bit limited trying to eat here since most of the items are not gluten-free. read more

This is a regular hangout spot for my co-workers and I, I love their happy hour chicken sliders, they are delicious! I keep forgetting to get their Mac and Cheese, I've heard great things about it...next time... Their outdoor seating is pretty awesome, heated lamps next to every table, so pretty nice for those of us that get cold easily. On the night that we one, they had beer tasting outside, which I think is pretty sweet. I think they could improve their HH drink selection...but over all the food is totally worth it, the service has always been great for me and everyone is super nice and a great atmosphere. I got to Portland last night and a friend (and local) recommended North 45 for dinner. I'm glad he did. In Denver, this type of place would be an overcrowded dive, but somehow in Portland (enough other choices?) there was plenty of seating, and an attentive wait staff. I've had a lot of calamari, but theirs is up there on my list! My girlfriend and I shared the Provencal Mussels and a Portabello sandwich. I'd recommend both highly. The only thing keeping this from being a 5-star rating is that we went around 7:30 on a Monday night and they were out of most of the tasty sounding Belgian brews. Bummer. read more

Some times you find that a place is perfect for something. Despite it maybe not being a perfect place. This weekend North 45 was the perfect place for Lunch at the street-side windows with my recently engaged wife-to-be. We split the Thai Chili mussels with the suggest Piraat beer pairing. The mussels were excellent, with zero empty shells. The broth was super flavorful and delicious with the bread. And the beer did pair perfectly. Loved our lunch here. One caveat is that it was superbowl sunday at around 2pm, so it was kind of nice that there were only 2-3 other parties in the place. read more

Patio is stellar! Service is dependably awful! I work in the area on Fridays and hate jumping into traffic! The alphabet district has got so many places to help kill time during that high traffic period! My friend and I happened upon North 45 this past week! We totally weren't looking for it. We were looking to go to Smokehouse 21 and just stumbled by this place first. Couldn't turn down a great patio on a summer day! It's one of those patios that feel like a great back yard! There's always a cool assortment of people there! Feels totally secluded by greenery! The entrance is from the back of the inside bar! Makes me feel like a found a secret hideaway! The service is so lacking! I don't buy that Portland attitude of nonchalance! I'll go to Paris if I want that crap! I ordered a salad and the steak Mac N Cheese! They brought them out together! I am the SLOWEST eater on the planet! I explained this and asked why they brought them out together! The response I got from the busser bar guy and our server was "that's how we do things"! What the heck? No one offered to make me happy! Plus there were flies everywhere! I couldn't focus on my salad and my friend! I had to fight off flies! The salad and Mac were mediocre at best! The Guinness was fab. Of course by the time I finished my salad, my Mac was cold! The service has always been abysmal! I'll still come back and enjoy a Guinness on the patio! Come for the ambiance, stay for the beer selection. I always enjoy grabbing a beer off of their pretty fabulous list, and the food that I have tried (mussels, sliders) has been good as well. The prices are decent for both food and alcohol. It can be tough finding a seat in the somewhat cramped quarters so try and come during the summer when the very nice back patio is open. If you do happen to pop in during a busy time and are lucky enough to nab a table indoors just know it can get quite noisy. Quiet date spot this is not. Some of the other reviews have mentioned poor service but I've never personally experienced it, even on busy nights the servers have always been pretty attentive. I'd like to give this place more stars, but the number of misses as compared to hits was too great for it to have been a decidedly above average experience. I met up with a few friends here, and I just barely missed the happy hour menu. Not a huge deal. I ordered one of their specialty cocktails - a Cucumber Kiwi Smash. This was really good; it wasn't too sweet. For food I picked out the Surf and Turf Roll from the Small Plates section of the menu. I think my brain read between the lines and assumed there would be rice like some sort of sushi roll, but it essentially was a cold meat and cheese roll. It wasn't awful, but it definitely wasn't good. I ate about half and was done. Other people ordered the Chicken Flautas (described as terrible), Sambal Green Beans (I tried one and they were really good), Mac and Cheese (I sampled this and it was good, but not amazing), and Garlic and Saffron Mussels (soooooo tasty). Honestly, I should have used context clues and determined that their mussels would be great considering the fact that 1/3 of their food menu was dedicated to them. If I come back, that is absolutely what I will order. Service was on the slow side which contributed to the 3 star v. 4 star rating. I really liked the outdoor patio with picnic tables. I had been here previously when they first opened years ago. The menu was varied, and included a lot of different versions of mussels that were tempting. We walked in to a small dining area, sort of dark coming from a sunny day. Football (sorry, soccer) was playing on a flatscreen above the bar. There were a few seats, no booths that I remember, and about a four-stool bar. An awesome liquor shelf, mirrored and on glass, went bar to ceiling in the back. It was massive and a piece of heaven. The environs are dark yet inviting... reminds me of England. But they have a back patio. And it is summer. In Portland. So, we got some menus and grabbed a picnic table, one of probably 12 in the back. The back patio has its own cabana bar and server station. I took a look at the beers and they had a decent selection of Belgian beers. I'm not a huge fan, but I wanted to give it a shot. The down side, the cheapest bottled Belgian beer was 11$. That's right, 11. I ordered an 11.2 oz (300mL) beer for $13. My wife had a whiskey ginger cocktail for 9$. Food: Mussels in lemograss broth (15$). Fish tacos (10$). Chicken wings (9$). String beans in oyster sauce(6$). Verdict: Mussels are probably worth it. Fish tacos were fried, but there were three. Worth it. There were about 7 wings with a good dipping sauce. Worth it. Green beans... meh. Good, but not worth 6$. You can get a MESS of green beans at any Chinese place better than this for that price. Beer: Not worth 13$. Black Butte is just as good as what I had (actually, probably better). This was definitely not worth the cost. And I don't understand why it was so much. I also had a draught Guinness. For 5.5$. Also not worth it. Cocktail: Delicious. Worth every penny of 8$. Not worth 9$. I learned that this place is related to Circa 33, also a very nice bar that has good-drinks-that-are-slightly-too-expensive and good food that is also high priced. The food was more consistently good here than at Circa, and the patio is great. But guys: it's a recession. I've not been unemployed during this recession and when I notice that the prices are a bit high, they're way too high for 75% of Portland. Knock a couple of bucks off of everything and you'll get a lot more people. We're in a depression here. Oh, and the music suuuucked. That is a matter of taste, so I don't ding people for it, but ick. I hate reggae and whatever-that-stuff-that-sort-of-sounds-like-reggae they played. I probably should have skipped the 13$ beer, but I had to give them a chance for redemption. It didn't work out this time. Win some, lose some. The Thursday barbecue night looks inviting. This is probably a deal on happy hour. This place is quickly earning a place in my heart. They have a great beer selection if you like Belgian-style beers, whiskey choices galore, and mac and cheese to die for. What more could you ask for in a pub? Inside is a cozy atmosphere that lends itself to leaning over the table to keep conversations intimate. It's dimly lit and the tables are close together. You can sit at the bar as well. If the evenings are nice, head out to the back patio and enjoy your libations and food there. If mac and cheese isn't your speed try the mussels. They have so many options and you can have them served with frites (fries) or bread. I tend to go for the bread so that it is easier to soak up the delicious broth. On a cold Pacific Northwest night mussels, broth, and beer make me a happy girl. read more

They have about 10 large (community seating) picnic tables so there's lots of room to show up with friends and find a spot to park yourself for a couple beers. The prices were kind of high yesterday, but then, I think that was because they were celebrating Oktoberfest. On a regular day, they've got a decent happy hour. I especially love their mac-n-cheese (it's a staple for me). The only downside to this little gem-of-a-bar is parking. NW has become a nightmare, with all their 90 minute restrictions (that roll 24 hours and don't stop at 7 pm like downtown). I usually have to circle the block 3 or 4 times and spend 10 or more minutes looking for a spot. Once you find one, the clock starts ticking. Let's hope they expand and open up a North 45 in the SE/NE side of town. read more
