I simply love Adelaide because of it simplicity, frog cakes and its AB dishes. Forget the doctor's advise and jump right in. Chunks of lamb or chicken ( you pick) tossed with the right amount (or more) mixed sauces, and mixed with a platter of french fries. It is divine with a capital D. Pair it with a soda or a chilled drink and you're all set for a gastronomical journey. Inside the cafe, you'll find arcade games which the kids will fancy no doubt whilst the rest stuff their face with this sweet juicy AB. Don't believe it's that good? Aka The Red and White, this burger joint is the arch nemesis of the Blue and White burger joint three doors down. This rivalry is not exactly Underbelly material however, it mainly involves college students from two rival schools throwing cold chips at each other's heads from the front of the two stores. The source of the rivalry originates from the delightful meal, 'Afterbirth' or sometimes even better, called 'Abortion', shortened to 'AB.' Both cafes claim to have come up with the idea of getting a pile of chips and covering them with yiros meat and a variety of sauces. Sure, I've heard the buzz about the deliciousness of this creation and its ability to cure hangovers, but I cannot abide eating a dish that looks and sounds like this. Shorten it however you please, but it's still named after placenta. I like the Red and White better than the Blue and White because it has groovy arcade games and a wall of fame with heaps of intriguing posters of people drunkenly scoffing AB's. I also think this one has a more chilled out attitude; the Blue and White I find a little less friendly, a little less re-laxed, man. As far as the burgers, you know what? I actually like both. Had enough of eating maccas, yiros, and the same old stuff? Try the infamous North Adelaide Burger Bar Original AB! Walking in, it looks like a pretty ordinary take-away bar. Nothing special at first, until you sit down and take your first bite of their AB. Oh, man, this is delicious! What's this AB? Where have you been all of my life? With all that sauce oozing out of you, and taste exploding in my mouth! And you got arcades too? Now this has to be one of the go-to spots for a young person who has run out of things to do! North, Adelaide, Burger, Bar! I was only a wee bit disappointed with the amount of tables and chairs...I heard this place can get really crowded late nights, so I was just expecting...more....tables....? Maybe some more chairs?! But that was the only negative. Overall - three things I really like about this place - their original AB, the friendly staff behind the counter who happily take your order, their drinks, their arcades, and the outside seating that lets you soak in the relaxing O'Connell Street of North Adelaide, one of the wealthiest suburbs around Adelaide (dare I say?). An oldie, but a goodie. One can never tire of soul food on a cold rainy day. Not only did this place bring back memories of my clubbing days, but it fulfilled a void that only an AB could. This is the original AB, do not let anyone tell you otherwise. It swung open its doors back in 1950, while its competitor down the road, four years later. This place's success is owed to it remaining true to itself. It makes all its own sauces, and is flexible to cater to customer's requests. If you want to concoct something weird and wonderful that only in your drunken stupor would comprehend and appreciate, then go hard. Pricepoint, they are also one of the most competitive around. It's only in recent years this establishment has gotten my business, as opposed to their rival a few doors down, the Blue & White. Prices and value for money drove me here, and their food has improved since my college years. Their AB's are definitely different and tasty in their own right, but the AB Crown goes to the Blue & White. I love North Adelaide Burger Bar. I always get the combination AB and it is brilliant. It's great hangover food or munchies for when you stop for something to eat on a big night out. The interior walls host photo's of the most money spent at AB by a single group and it has a mini arcade as well. Outdoor seating is convenient on O'connel street and I'll definitely keep coming back for as long as it keeps runnning. 10/10 would recommend. read more

I'm going to have to be honest here - back in the days when we were wandering around North Adelaide looking for a bite to eat, it we tended to prefer the Blue and White cafe as opposed to the North Adelaide Burger Bar (otherwise known as the red and white). It was then that I first learnt about the AB, however my knowledge of this Adelaide delicacy (if you want to call it that) had been sitting at the back of my mind until I found myself back here much more recently. Anyway, I wanted to revisit the North Adelaide Burger Bar of my youth, and I have to admit very little has changed. In fact this place looks like it is still the same as it was back in the 90s - right down to the fact that they don't have an eftpos machine (and the day they get one is probably going to be the day this place will never be the same again). The Burger Bar is a classic take away shop, right down to the video games in the back room. However if you want to try something different, try the AB - it's an experience. read more

If the answer is "No, I can't even recall the last time I even considered shotting tequila" then maybe you should just keep on walking, yeah? North Adelaide Burger Bar is renowned for being the home of the original AB (probably best not to ask...) - a concoction of chips, yiros meat, garlic and tomato sauce. Sounds gross? You're probably not in the target market for this joint. It's pretty old school - the menus and signage probably haven't been updated for a decade or two, and the dust bunnies hiding behind the arcade games have probably been hiding for just as long...but don't let that put you off! If you're after an AB or a yiros - or even, if you dare, a deep fried mars or snickers, this may be the place for you! The yiros here is okay - not mind blowing, but not terrible, and at certain times, that's all you can hope for. Come for the AB, stay for a yiros and have a go at the car racing games, leave because...well, it's probably a good idea not to stay too long - you might end up with a photo on the wall that could come back to haunt you for years to come! read more

Yeah, this place is alright. If you're on angina medication, you'll want to eat somewhere less fattening, like, say, McDonalds. I haven't been brave enough to try the AB. Surgeon General's Warning - eat your heart out (...of good working order) at the North Adelaide Burger Bar. Yes this place hits the spot at 4:00am on a booze infused food indulgence. But what about during the day? For starters, I frequent this place more than is good for my health. So I feel that I am somewhat of an authority on the subject. Also, and I'm not proud of this, I have on occasion gone late-night and been back for breakfast. The ambiance. The walls are plastered in pics of drunk people stuffing their faces with food that doesn't look like it will fit in their stomachs. There are three indoor tables and six outside and not nearly enough chairs. Don't take an "indoor chair" outside or you'll get growled. At the counter you're greeted with a blast of hot meaty air in the face. All that heat and you'd think these guys would get grumpy, but that's simply not the case. Instead, they are friendly and efficient, serving up standard grilled affair at good ol' fashioned prices. Not everything comes with chips, but if you're in the mood make sure to get them--they're euphoric and plentiful. This place is perhaps best known for fried Mars bars and ABs. If you're unsure what an AB is or what it stands for, Google it. Dear heart. You burned so bright. But your time may soon be up.
