I've been going here for so many years, I forget how long Dr. Tran has known me. Everyone is always nice, the staff is as professional as can be, and they have the cleanest spaces I've ever seen. You can actually see them in the process of sanitizing everything from the chair to the X-ray machine after a patient in the next room is done and out of there. They always check in DURING the cleaning MULTIPLE times to make sure I'm doing okay. I'm surprised the rating isn't higher, honestly. I visited this dentist on two occasions years ago. The first visit was just for a checkup. It went ok, and I didn't experience any issues. I was glad to have found a decent place that was actually modern and clean and not a hole in the wall like so many dental practices across Chicago. In the meantime, I recommended the dentist to a friend. When I went for my second visit, the dentist told me I needed to remove my wisdom teeth, and while poking around, he left a tooth damaged, which I didn't realize at first. I asked questions about the wisdom teeth, and he was so arrogant in answering my questions. His staff and him were having private conversations while I was in the dental chair. It was very unprofessional. After the second visit, I decided not to go back and not to get my wisdom teeth removed by him. In the meantime, my friend went for a cleaning, and she also experienced the dentist and his female staff having private inappropriate conversations while she was in the dental chair. Then, the dentist didn't even do her cleaning but one of his assistants. Instead of soft Kleenex tissues, they used those rough, brown, recycled paper towels to wipe around her mouth, leaving the area around her mouth irritated because she has sensitive skin. They told her how she had to get her wisdom teeth removed and had cavaties that needed to be taken care of. After this bad experience, my friend went to another dentist, who confirmed that she had cavities and those needed to be taken care of, but the wisdom teeth did not have to be touched at all. She still has her wisdom teeth and has had no issues with them. read more

VERY confused by the bad reviews. I came here for a bridge, but ended up having to have other work done first. Dr Tran was very polite and gave me the best reference ever for an extraction. Before he started on the work he had to do on my teeth, he repeatedly made sure I was comfortable, numb and informed me many times that if anything was bothering me to let him know. He wasn't even the slightest bit of rude. On top of all this he was very informative of all the other procedures I needed to get done and he recommended in what order I should get them done. I honestly cannot say enough good things about this office. The woman, actually all the woman at the front desk had wonderful attitudes as well, remembered me by name and made me feel like I was apart of the "family"! After leaving my review I was contacted by Joanna, the manager, who must be the reason they're still in business. She issued me a refund for the bonding, that I never intended to request, so I thank her for the goodwill. She also requested that I come back in to have the bonding redone. I let her know that I didn't want to go back to Dr. Tran. (and that's because of him, not their office as a whole). She was doing her job and she did it well. Sadly, this won't change the experience I had, but I can appreciate their efforts to ameliorate. I might be lost as a customer, but if Dr. Tran can take a hospitality workshop and a breath before working with new clients... maybe something good will come of my bad experience. I've been here 3 times so far, went for a 2 cleanings then a cavity filling. I will say I have extremely bad anxiety in a dental office, and they are all so professional and make you feel at ease. They even offer medicine for patients with high anxiety (like myself) The cleanings are a little intense for me personally because they use ultrasonic water pick cleaning (I think) and it can be painful at times but he was so good about telling me all the steps he is going to do, and I love that he really emphasizes to use breathing techniques to calm your anxiety. They are very knowledgeable with any questions I have. I will say I'm not an easy patient because of my GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) and they are just amazing with me, while he cleans my teeth he always reminds me "when it hurts the most it's because there's just an excess of buildup, but after he gets it off it doesn't hurt as bad" and he is very true with that statement. So for anyone that is diagnosed with G.A.D. I definitely recommend going here because they are very mindful with their patients and what they need to have a more comfortable experience. So also, I want to say THANK YOU for your mindfulness and the patients you all have. read more

The practice's x-ray machine requires using a bracket that is inserted into the mouth and secured by biting down. This was not the first time that the hygienist's speed inserting the bracket caused me to gag. And I gagged a good three times as she kept jamming it in there this time. One day after my visit this week, I discovered a painful canker sore on the arch near the back of my mouth - an injury I can only attribute to the x-ray process. I've forgiven Dr. Tran's consistently abrasive and condescending attitude over the last few years, but when he's literally adding insult to injury, this became the visit that will lead me to select a new dentist in 6 months. read more

I visited Dr. Tran for a routine cleaning. Dr. Tran's assistant was unable to deliver a routine cleaning without injuring me during the procedure. Three times I asked her to stop stabbing my gums. When she stabbed me for the 4th time I terminated the procedure and left. Dr. Tran is not capable of managing his office or delivering basic dental care. When I first went to Dr. Tran a year ago, I thought that I had found my new dentist. Well, the honeymoon is over. After I had a first good experience, I suggested that my wife go to him as well. They told her that she had a bunch of cavities and scheduled her several appointments to get them filled. On one of her return visits, he hit a nerve with the novocain shot, she went white as a ghost and was in a lot of pain. I was very worried as her mouth did not feel right for several weeks. I suppose these things happen occasionally but it was pretty scary. They also messed up our billing 3 times over the 18 months that we went to them. He overbooks as well. The last time I was there I was on time yet waited almost another hour for him to see me. I was trying to engage him in a conversation about good brushing habits but he didn't have a lot of time to do so. I know that dentists see multiple patients at once but I did not feel like a patient. I felt like a dollar sign in a chair that he will use to pay for his son's private golf lessons (One of the conversations between Dr. Tran and the hygienist while they worked on my teeth.) I knew right then and there, that this would be the last time this man's hands were in my mouth. I will continue my search for a dentist who can show me the attention that I think my teeth deserve. read more

This was my first experience in usa with a dentist ..I'm a visiting medical student from India and had my vineer come off during my short stay in usa ...my number one criteria was the cost and this place fitted my budget as I had no insurance ...I spoke to Dr Trann over the phone before I made the appointment and he explained the requirement of an X ray to rule out cavities and even gave the estimate He gave a shot to numb and finished the procedure in less than 20 minutes ...I do agree with other reviewers he's not very polite as I know how much effort I take in being polite to my patients ...but I was prepared for anything as this was the cheapest and the earliest appointment I could get ...I think he simultaneously works on other patients too while he's attending you ... Bottom line great place for cheap and quick procedures ...clean and heiginic ...but Dr tran could get little more polite and patient as I believe that's what makes you a better doctor ... read more

As dentist's offices go, this is a no frills operation. However, what the waiting room lacks in style, Dr. Tran more than makes up for with his demeanor. He's a nice, gentle dentist who explains everything to you. What more do you want? Well, howsabout a tv to watch while they're cleaning your teeth? Check! Nice hygenists? Check! Affordable dentistry? Double Check! PS: The office is moving in November into the old Yoga Now site a block and a half south of where they are now. So, if you base your dental experience on waiting room furniture, you will probably like the new space! Sigh. I got a second opinion and the new dentist agreed with me that Dr. Tran's approach was aggressive and because of this, I will not be returning to Dr. Tran for my dental needs. The new dentist was able to give me an exact number of the fillings I needed and how much each filling would cost, all during one visit and not needing to contact them multiple times for such information. He agreed with Tran on the possibility of needing a root canal, but I felt that he was genuine in trying to save the tooth first. Luckily, he was able to fill it. There are a few other teeth that have some tooth decay and those will be filled over two more visits, but he said the soft spots that Tran probably saw as cavities would be left untouched until they become more problematic. I also had him look at the divot in the back of my tooth I thought was the fault of Tran's staff; he told me that it looked normal and there was no issue, that it was probably caused by an excessive amount of tartar that needed removed. Fair enough. I don't like leaving negative reviews, especially one star; however, my experience was unpleasant and frustrating, leading me to seek a second opinion. read more

Not impressed! Was there with a friend for a root canal. She wanted Dr. Tran to explain things to her first and was a bit scared of the procedure. He was rude and impatient with us. When she expressed concern over how much pain she would be in he literally replied "I'll bet you $20 the procedure will not hurt at all in any way" And then later said... "if you think it hurts then it's actually just all in your head" They are affordable, and their offices are nice. And all the folks other than Dr. Tran were patient and kind and understanding and reassuring to my friend and I. But I fire docs with no bedside manner...so this one is out for us. read more

I saved more than $200 getting my cavities filled here after a bad experience (and apparently mega-inflated estimate) at SoWell Dental Associates. Dr. Tran was totally respectful of my financial situation and the procedure was quick and painless. I agree with previous posters about the no-frills waiting area, but the people waiting there were very friendly, and who wants to pay for frills anyway? Dr. Tran has been my dentist for nearly 6 years, ever since I moved up here in the Edgewater neighborhood. The new office is a whole lot better than the old office. I like North Broadway Dental because they are open on some weekends, they have fast and friendly service, and their prices are very reasonable for services. My favorite part is how they use an ultrasonic device do clean the plaque off of your teeth instead of the old metal scraper. Another thing I like -- Whenever Dr. Tran notices a cavity, he can fill it right away, without making me schedule another appointment. Awesome. One time, Dr. Tran noticed that a cavity was just beginning and wasn't deep yet. He recommended that he could do a small filling in it right now before it got worse -- and that I wouldn't need to get the an injection to numb my mouth and face. I like how honest and informative Dr. Tran is. A less ethical dentist might have wanted to use the numbing injection anyway to increase the amount of billable services. Where do I begin... I called doctor Trans office informing the staff that I have a very bad tooth pain and needed to see the dentist ASAP. I got a x-ray of the tooth and was told I needed a root canal or get my tooth but he doesn't pull teeth. He walked off never came back to explain my options, so I left. I have been going for a while and had this wonderful Dentist who I could not remember her name. The last time I was in for a cleaning, she had left the practice and my dentist had been replaced by a Dentist who wasn't so good. The new Dentist was rough and very preachy, and really made the visit unpleasant. I have decided not to return. When I asked for my previous Dentist's name, since I couldn't remember it, they refused to provide it. She was amazing and had a much more gentle approach that her successor could take a lesson from. I love Dr. Tran! He's an excellent dentist and really honest. He let me know that if I used my dental insurance that he would have to charge me at the insured rate and I would end up paying more out of pocket for my service than if he were to charge me for the uninsured rate. I found Dr. Tran when I had an emergency and needed to find a dentist near where I work. I was terrified because I've had such negative experiences with dentists in the past. Dr. Tran explained what I needed done and basically I needed a new bridge to replace my two front teeth. I knew this would involve shots in the front of my mouth and from past experience I was beside myself with worry. Today was my appointment and I can't say enough good things about Dr. Tran. First, I got six shots and I didn't feel any pain. The first two I felt a little stick but that was it and I was amazed. He was so patient with me and his staff are amazing as well. If you have had a bad experience in the past which is preventing you from getting dental care go here! You will not be disappointed and I guarantee you will feel no pain. We have been coming to this office as a family for about 20+ I know sometimes it came become overwhelming just waiting to be seen but rest assure that they know you are there and present and are working as hard as they can to get you seen. What I recently learned that they are using the equipment prior to our visit and sometimes you may not notice because they are already working with someone prior to our appointment. They are very professional and attentive to us in trying to getting us in ASAP. Recently I walked in for a appointment for one of my kiddos and I was actually late by 30 minutes. I walked in thinking I was early and with no hesitation they took him directly to the back and took care of him. Sometimes we are just so busy ourselves that we forget that they are attending other customers and me especially should be patient and understanding with the staff and letting them get done so they could move on to the person. Awesome location and great dentist. The inside is very nice and clean and I love the fact that he lets you watch whatever you want on the T.V. as hes working away on your teeth. Huge sports fan and car enthusiast so if you share the same hobbies having a conversation is no problem. Dr. Tran made me feel very relaxed and easy and my sibling loves his office and work as well. My fiancee told me about his dentist, Dr. Tran, and I was more than eager to find a new dentist as my current dentist always seemed to make things way more painful than necessary and charging me way too much for fillings. I showed up one morning and he not only gave me an appointment right away but worked me with me and my previous dentist to get my x rays so I wouldn't have to pay for new ones. After having my fillings done with him I will never go back! So awesome, and totally reasonable and works easily with my insurance. Makes getting dental work done almost enjoyable. I've never had anything but a positive experience here, and rarely do the words "positive" and "dentist" go together. Got my second opinion today and found out that while I still need extensive work, it won't be nearly the amount I was told I needed at North Broadway Dental. I won't lie - I'm pretty appalled. I will say that the new dentist also noted that a root canal may be necessary on one of the teeth, so I want to make it clear that seemed to be accurate advice. He also noted a couple of "soft spots" on my teeth that could turn into fillable cavities later but that, for now, he recommends we just watch. I suspect that these soft spots are also "cavities" that North Broadway recommended I just have filled even though my new dentist seems confident that with proper care and regular cleanings they should be OK, at least in the short term. Also, the cost estimate I received from North Broadway had a different cost for one-, two-, three-, and four-surface fillings, each more expensive than the last. My new dentist has a flat fee for all fillings. I'm very curious why one dentist would have a flat fee and another would have escalating fees. I didn't ask this question to either dentist, though, so I won't speculate as to the answer, but it's something to think about. Still very disappointed and won't be back. read more

Having been to only one dentist my entire 33 years (my father), I was nervous to see a new one. The professionalism, kindness, and care I received at North Broadway Dental was phenomenal and put me at ease right away. Every part of my procedure was explained before conducted, Dr. Tran frequently asked if I was alright, and when I didn't want two procedures done at my appointment time, he quickly took them off the agenda. The staff was also warm, welcoming, and efficient. I've read some people speak about his tone being harsh or rude, but that is absolutely not the experience I received. Seriously avoid this place if you cherish being able to eat after dental work. This place is attractive and clean ues but the staff is just awful including the dentist. They dont have time to listen to what is bothering you and give you bullshut answers as an excuse to get you out the door. I have really soft enamel and had to get a cavity filled and that side of my mouth resealed were there was some abrasion. I got my work done in mid April, it is now almost September and ive returned 2 times to try and fix the problem and they do nothing. I cant chew anything on the right side of my mouth and havent been able to since the dental work. Its an extreme pain while chewing and flossing and both times ive gone to get it fixed they squeezed me in between other appointments and seemed indifferent to my complaints. The dentist would just shave my teeth down with a drill claiming the issue was that my bite was wrong and then lectured me on how to floss before rushing me out the door again. I fear that he has done serious damage to my mouth that is now going to cost me even more at another dentist to fix. I just hope that someone reads this and makes the right choice in avoiding this place. read more

I had remained loyal to my fancy suburban dentist until I compared prices and just couldn't resist getting a cleaning here. The prices have remained at $75 including x-rays which is unheard of in the burbs. I work with public aid families and Dr. Tran gives good care to Kids Care families and is very considerate of them. In the burbs I couldn't even find a dentist that would treat Kid Care patients. He is not a conversationalist and I don't go to him expecting wit . I go to get my teeth cleaned. I appreciate that he helps less fortunate folk in the area, too. One of his hygenists was pretty rough and dismissive of my pain but I confronted that and I noticed she was not there last time I went in. read more

I find Dr. John Tran to be very pretentious, arrogant and self centered. Never looks at you in the eye while speaking regarding any issues at hand. He walks away before I can ask him any questions. Not worth the aggravation. And please don't be fooled by the fancy dentist chair, monitors in every room etc. By the way, I'm Chinese/American and ashamed of his arrogant demeanor towards patients. Dr Tran and his whole stall are excellent. I have been going to Dr Tran for over 15 years and he has done a bunch of work - fillings, 1 bridge, replacing old fillings, 3 crowns. All had been great. Will go for the next 15 years. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Tran since 2008. He is always friendly. The location is great. He's also responsive when I raise my hand to take a break during a cleaning or another procedure. I generally have good teeth, so it's possible this contributes to my positive experience. read more
