I have been going to Dr. Sfikas and Maria for cleanings for over a decade and they are the most kind and caring medical staff I've ever had the pleasure of being their patient. The cleanings are very thorough, yet gentle. I haven't gotten a single cavity since getting my cleanings done here. Dr. Sfikas is thorough with his check up post-cleanings to make sure I don't have any other oral issues or possible related pain from my sinuses, throat and ears. Sfikas team also doesn't try to push any extra services or products that are not covered by insurance like some dental offices do. The admin team is also very nice and great at sending reminders of appointments. There were a couple of times I needed a cleaning moved up ASAP at the last minute due to travel commitments and they always some how managed to squeeze me in. When Sfikas was no longer in network with my insurance, the admin took care of me to make sure I was not financially worse off. I had a family member that needed an emergency tooth extraction over the holidays and after calling around over 10 dentist offices in the neighborhood, only Dr. Sfikas' office called me back to squeeze my relative in the very next day during his lunch hours! My relative didn't speak any English, but Sfikas and his whole team were very patient and gentle with her. Thank you so much and I hope you never retire! read more

I should have written this review a few years ago at least. I think that's how long I've been seeing Dr. Sfikas. The entire team and doctor are great. I feel like Dr. Sfikas really takes time to listen to any concerns you may have, answer any questions and really explain why he needs to do something or what is going on. He never seems to try to get you to do needless procedures. He's kind and thorough. His staff are all great as well--from the hygienists to the front desk staff. The office is definitely not as high tech or fancy as a lot of dental offices seem to be these days, but I never doubt the cleanliness or care I'm receiving. Today, I went to have my teeth cleaned with Kim (Dental Hygienist) and had new insurance that is not accepted here. Dr. SFIKAS SAID THEY WOULD CLEAN MY TEETH FOR FREE. He said they are happy to see me. I have been going here for years and Kim does great work. They offer free underground parking in the adjacent building. Being new to town, I needed to find a dentist and went to see Dr. Sfikas on the suggestion of some college friends. I've been to see Sfikas about four times now and I've been very satisfied. I had two cleanings, some light cavities filled, and had a whitening kit made with custom molds. The hygienists were gentle but effective, as was the DDS himself when it came to the ugly matter of filling cavities. Compared to other dentists I've been to -- and I have sensitive gums, so I hate the dentist, I would rank Dr. Sfikas very highly. Office is clean and conveniently located on the North Side in Uptown -- just a few minutes walk from the El and with bus stops right outside their door. They processed my insurance with ease and were flexible when it came to making payments on the whitening molds. read more

If you are looking for a really good Chicago Dentist, with sincere professional service, Dr. John Sifikas is one of the best Dentists I can recommend. I am not one who has ever enjoyed going to a dentist, but the services at this office do make it a little more easy to tolerate. Over the years, I've had a root canal, and plenty of teeth cleanings at his office, and have always left happy with the service. Dr. Sifikas is a lot different from other dentists I've encountered over the years because he goes the extra mile to assist his patients. On Christmas Eve, while in Las Vegas, I ended up with a cracked filling. I was in extreme pain and left a message for Dr. Sifikas to please call me back. Fifteen min later, he actually called me back on the phone to assist me. I never expected a dentist to call me back while I was out of town at 11pm at night on Christmas eve. Our whole family has been going to dr john for years he moved his practice a little farther from where we live but when you have knowledgeable caring dentist and amazing staff the ride is with it he also takes you on short notice even if he's filled with patients if it's an emergency he'll fit you in . He also has a payment plan if so you can pay your dental bill over time no interest. Dr. Sfikas, and his staff, are the best. I went in to get cavities filled. Actually, I went in because a previous dentist told me I needed a root canal and I was suspicious, so Sfikas was my second opinion. I was walked through not only how to get my X-rays from the other dentist, but also the options I had for fillings and a breakdown of how much each would cost after insurance coverage. This may sound like normal practice, however the previous dentist left me confused about what was going to happen next and how much it would cost. And get this? No root canal necessary! Dr. Sfikas agreed with me that the previous dentist had a more aggressive approach (possibly hesitantly because he's polite) and I appreciate that he, unlike the previous guy, avoided filling soft spots and instead decided to take a wait-and-see approach for such problem areas. As others have written, he has a gentle touch and communicates with his patients. I'm excited I found a dentist I'll enjoy visiting twice a year! read more

Like Dr. Sfikas really needs another 5-star review. Until all dentistry can be done with painless lasers (and it's 2014 so I'm not sure why we're not there yet), Dr. Sfikas is a sure bet for an agreeable dental experience. Dr. Sfikas is very friendly, and treats every patient as if he's been seeing them for years. He'll let you know about any concerns, but doesn't go fire-and-brimstone-and-dentures on you. He also won't try to oversell you on needless procedures; a year or two ago he mentioned that I might have to have extra work done because of a gum issue, but since then he hasn't pushed it or even mentioned it. As an example of just how wonderful Dr. Sfikas is - I had been a patient for about a year when I lost my job, and hence, my dental insurance. I put off my appointment for a little over a year until my new job's insurance kicked in, and when I finally went in he immediately recognized me and said "haven't seen you in a while!" When I told him about the job/insurance situation, he told me that he would have happily worked out something with me. I'm not saying you're going to walk in off the street and pay $5 for a dental exam, but it's nice to know that this is a dentist who has genuine concern for his patients. I've been seeing Dr. John since I had my first teeth in the late 80's. That already says something if my parents were willing to follow this guy around as he changed offices to eventually end up where he's been for a long time now. He even worked to schedule all four of us at the same time with extra flexibility for fillings since we used to drive over an hour to get to his office. I always enjoyed my bi-annual dentist visit and as I got older, I came to realize that was bizarre and that a lot of people fear the dentist. It's because of Dr. Sfikas and his staff that this experience is enjoyable. They're friendly. I joke that he's a part of my family since I see him more often than extended family... but there's a truth to that. He is an ideal family dentist... or dentist for anyone. I chipped my front teeth over a year ago and had them fixed in Milwaukee, but last night one chipped again (as I was told they would) and needed to find a dentist ASAP to fix it. After making a few phone calls and not finding anyone willing to take me until next week, I talked to the receptionist at Dr. Sfikas office. She took my information and said she'd call me back within a half hour. Within about 5 minutes she had called back and seemed genuinely happy that the Dr. could take me AFTER they were closed. I was supremely impressed. Naturally, after I booked that appointment, I received a few calls from some of the other top rated dentists willing to squeeze me in earlier, but the fact that they were so willing to go above and beyond like that for a new patient made me very positive going into the appointment. Dr. Sfikas was extremely nice, knowledgeable and honest. I felt he fixed my tooth twice as strong as the original and I was also impressed that he didn't try to pressure me to fix the other one, saying it still had a couple years on it. I was always uncomfortable with the way the first doctor fixed it, and Dr. Sfikas confirmed that those suspicions were correct. Thanks Yelp! You steered me right! read more

I had not been to the dentist in a while. I had have my wisdom teeth removed earlier this year and it became a real debacle, scaring me off of my regular cleanings and exams. But, time to jump back on the horse and be an adult. I went to this office for the amazing reviews here, and they did not disappoint. Much has been said about the dentists, but I want to say that my hygienist, Kim, was superb. First of all, a lot of people assume that I go by "Mary" rather than my full hyphenated first name--Irish Catholic parents, alright? But she asked, which was much appreciated. Instead of lecturing me about oral hygiene, she asked what my routine was, and offered comment from there. She talked through the cleaning, but not in an annoying way, like she was nervous. She seemed genuinely interested in my graduate work, talked about her travels, and we even bonded over our love of the "First World Problems" meme. That's an A+ in my book. What I hate most about the dentist is that scraping sound on my teeth. Ohhhhh good god I hate that. It gives me goose bumps. I told her this, she joked with me about it, and her banter helped me forget it. Mostly. Nice office staff, no gimmick-y dental "salon" atmosphere--just friendly, professional people. I only started a yelp account to write this review. I made an appointment to see Dr.Sfikas because of the rave reviews posted here on yelp, and I'm glad I did. The front desk already contact my Insurance upon my arrival and assured me of the pricing in advance. I hate surprise costs, so this was nice. The dental hygienist was very friendly and went over all that she was going to do, and moved quick when she knew the x-rays' were uncomfortable for me. Dr. Sfikas himself was very polite and thorough and did not shame me for having to wait on my dental benefits to kick in. I had the same dentist for my entire life, literally, since I've had teeth. I moved to Chicago and couldn't afford to go back to Ohio every time I need a cleaning...so I checked out Yelp and this is what I found! I love this dentist. Dr. Sfikas is so, so nice and gentle. You can tell that he cares about YOU and not just your money. This office has a very "small town" feel which is appealing to me. I've never had any major dental issues so I'm not sure how to rate him on that but for a general check-up I really enjoyed going here. The hygienist, Kim, is so, SO friendly and kind of wacky, which I like...it's the dentist, who wants a boring person working on their teeth for 30 minutes? She perks up the experience. I've been twice (6 months apart) and she remembered me the second time. Overall, I've enjoyed my experience. I haven't had any trouble getting Saturday morning appointments, everyone is friendly, and the office is in a perfect location for anyone in Edgewater/Rogers Park/Uptown (the 147, 151 and 136 stop literally outside the door and the Berwyn red line is 2 blocks away...). Absolutely fantastic dental work and professionalism among him and his staff! I have dreaded going to dentists offices based off of my previous experiences. Long wait times, painful procedures, and the monotonous elevator music they play or never ending soap operas... I've gone multiple times now to the office of Dr. Sfikas, and not once did I have to wait more than 5 minutes. More often than not, my work was started immediately upon arrival. Extremely professional, very personable, and supreme service among everyone at this office. On top of not having to wait and no music, I also have yet to experience anything that would be considered mildly painful. The same procedures I received from other dentists, Dr. Sfikas does faster, pain-free, better, and brighter than the rest. Plus, his business allows for up to 2 hours valet parking for free. I made an appointment here in 2012, because of all the great yelp reviews!! Unfortunaltely, I did not have a very good experience. I have defeinitely experienced better!! I was greeted nicely and the hygenist began very nicely, but it ended pretty sour...at least on my end. I had not been to the dentist in quite some time...5 years in fact. Not because I was scared (well only a teeny weeny bit) or had bad experiences, but merely because I'd been a starving artist for those 5 years and simply couldn't afford it. So, the hygenist felt the need to comment approximately 10 times (I counted) about how I should have been coming to the dentist. Then came the xrays and I couldn't hold the instrument she was putting in my mouth sturdy enough and thus began more scolding and unneccesary comments. I seriously wanted to get up and leave. I mean I can't be the only one whosw experinced pain while holding that instrument. No cavities, no issues whatsoever...except that I am just a horrible person for not having been to the dentist in so long. Oh wait, there was the "I could have done a better job cleaning your teeth, but since you haven't come in so long it just made the process very difficult" The dentist popped in VERY briefly and reiterated what the hygenist stated "You should come back in 3 months instead of six, because I had a hard time cleaning your teeth, since you haven't been in so long" WOW! I get it, I get it, okay...I need to visit the dentist on a regular and consistent basis. No need for scolding!!! UGH! Just not the place for me!!! read more

I'm writing this review because, unfortunately, I have to change dentists due to an insurance switch, and I'm not looking forward to finding a dentist comparable to Dr. Sfikas and his staff. There are lots of comments on receptionists at other dental offices, so I'll say that the reception staff was excellent: friendly, accommodating, etc. The hygenist who has taken care of my cleanings is great as well. Thorough, gentle (a big deal for me), and friendly in just the right quantity for conversations involving one person having their hands in the other person's mouth. Finally, Dr. Sfikas was extraordinary. I don't take terribly good care of my teeth, and he didn't make me feel like a loser because of this. He went through my mouth, outlined the problems and discussed (instead of dictated) a plan to fix said problems. After several fillings that were very quick, very gentle, and well-explained, I'd love to send him more business. I'm only sorry I can't be a part of it. He also sent me to Oral Surgery Associates to have a wisdom tooth pulled--and I was thoroughly pleased with their work on me, even though I was thoroughly dreading it.
