My sunnyside eggs were perfectly cooked. The sausage was tasty pork sausage. I elected for sourdough toast and it had that special taste of good sourdough bread. The hash browns tasted good, but better with some Cholula hot sauce. I enjoyed my meal. Allison, my server, was fantastic. Coffee refills came regularly. We stopped at this nice little dinner because we needed to be on the road early and this diner opened at 5 am Charlie, our waitress greeted us and served us coffee and a glass of water. She was cheerful and gracious at 6 am and she showed us good customer service. I ordered the biscuits and gravy while my wife ordered the French toast with Sunny side up eggs and bacon. Loved this place for the last 30 plus years. I can remember little juke boxes on the tables when I was a kid. My wife doesn't care to eat breakfast anywhere else after eating here. It's funny that my past has become her present. She loves the old timers that frequent the place,the staff that bust their butts with a welcoming smile and heart. But most of all the food. Stopped in Idaho Falls on my way to West Yellowstone, was looking for a place for a brunch and this was one place that caught my eye. At first walking in I was a bit skeptical because it's not the nicest looking place, like you walked into a Time Machine almost lol. Old time diner vibes. Everybody that worked there was super friendly and attentive. The food was really tasty and I will say their homemade sourdough bread was actually very good! I got the country style sandwich which had country fried steak and eggs on it, was very tasty especially with the added gravy dipping sauce. The only negative thing I would have to say is the steak wasn't as tender as I would have liked, was kinda hard to bite into. The omelet had good flavor and very big portions. This was a nice meal I mean it's comfort food to the max. It's an older out of the way Cafe. You could drive right past it and never notice it. But I did notice it, after a grueling trip from Montana. I was tired and grumpy. But boy this was the place to change all that. I got the special . It was a chili burger with fries and soup. Boy oh boy did it hit the spot! My wife enjoyed locally grown fresh strawberries and whip cream for dessert. I was full and didn't have room for anything else. Service was good, small town vibe. Food was your standard from a package meal. Nothing is homemade unless you classify a hand breaded piece of cube steak homemade. Hubby and I both got the lunch portion of country fried steak with country gravy (brown gravy optional) with tots. Gravy tasted like McKormiks from the package, steak was a bit tough to chew. Tots were fresh and super crunchy, which was great, but you know they still cook in rancid canola. There weren't really any healthier options for breakfast. No Benedict's, which for me was disappointing, but they probably could have been on the same caliber anyway. So this place has been here a minute and when you're road tripping, it's way more fun to pop by a local haunt than, well - Cracker Barrel or IHOP. Clearly a fave of the locals because on this weekday morn at 10AM it was filled with retirees congregating and a lot of one liners passing between customers and wait staff. And they're pretty familiar with each other saying repeat business. It all bode well for us. I had the Taco Scramble, delicious and more than plentiful. At least half found its way to a to-go box. A couple of scrambled eggs on top of a heap of onions, green bell peppers, hash browns, diced fresh tomatoes and their "taco meat" which I'm certain was a mix of meats including beef and chorizo. Spicy and flavorful. Not the hot kind of spicy. Condiments of sour cream and salsa on the side and a warm tortilla. A tad bit greasy given the look of the empty plate but flavor has its cost. My hubs had the Hi-Way Hash. Ham, bacon, and sausage mixed with normal hash fixins and two eggs over easy on top. Homemade, thick sliced sourdough toast with strawberry jalapeño jam. Hubs said, "the right balance of sweet and heat." I had a bite of his toast and it was fabulously light with a faint sourdough flavor. Being accustomed to Bay Area "hit you over the head with sourdough" flavor, it was a nice variation. See the pics of hubs' plate, before and after. No to-go box needed. He was happy. Aaaaand, even though we already had too much food, the rave reviews were for the French toast made with above referenced sourdough, so what could we do? Order it, of course! Worth it. Every danged bite of cinnamon-y goodness. Many items came as half orders which is great. The wait staff offered that option even when the menu didn't. I appreciate that. More sampling opportunity. Kind Of Rough Old Cafe! What on the name of yelp is going on here? We saw good prices and almost 5 stars of yelp support here so we stopped in for dinner. I wouldn't do it again. Raw Chicken Fried Steak: I got my steak and it was looking almost uncooked. I am a guy who likes medium or medium rare but not extra rare! I sent it back for more cooking and it came back about medium rare. It was ok, but my stomach isn't happy right now. Good Country Fried Chicken: This was the better choice that Donna made and it was good chicken cooked well. Mashed potatoes were good, home made judging from the chunks. Dirty Old Floors: this place has some rough and dirty looking floors. I'm surprised they pass health inspections! Old dusty shelves and a state of general worn out status. Somebody should have remodeled here 15 years ago. The older waitress was pleasant, the younger black haired one looked overwhelmed and the place didn't have many people there to get overwhelmed about! When I think of an "Institution" in food and bev this is it. A rich 90 year history and you can tell not much has changed. I mean that in the best possible way. The food is made by real people and it is made from scratch. This is farm to table before it was cool. This is a place that makes you feel like you're home. The food was DELICIOUS I had the French toast and it was outstanding, they make their own bread from scratch and it tasted that way. My friend had the veggie omelet and hash browns and obviously any hash browns in Idaho are gonna be good but these were delicious! I couldn't believe it when I got the check as I had 2 breakfasts coffee and a side of bacon and my check was only 17$! I thought it was a mistake! I just love this place, no matter what you order it is delicious, affordable and served with a smile from one of the beautiful waitresses. I snuck in just before closing and I had HiWayRare Roastbeef like a French dip. Roast beef was delicious and piled high on a fresh baked roll with a side of homemade potato salad. Best affordable spot to eat. I got their breakfast special which was less than $6. Half a plate of French toast, one egg and two bacon strips. It was completely worth it. Up until recently I had all but given up on the North Hi-Way Cafe. When I used to eat there all the waitresses were very rude and inattentive. I'd go in there with my uncle and they'd pay him all the attention leaving me feeling left out, wishing I'd eaten elsewhere. I understand this because they're an old well established hometown restaurant and I come from a long line of Smiths and Hathaways, an old family around here. The problem for them is that now my uncles dead and they've lost both of our business, good going North Hi-Way Cafe. Most of their food is pretty good though. The restaurant has been here for near 85 years. I've recently let go of old resentments because my friends and I have been having dinner there alot lately. Lo and behold the waitress staff has completely turned over since then. Last nite I ordered there bbq beef sandwhich which is very delightful. It came with a large side of fries. Our waitress was familiar to me as I believe she once worked at JB's when it was on broadway. I think the waitresses make their rounds of the various restaurants around here because you really do start to recognize them everywhere you go. Well she was sweet and gave us tremendously good service and was aware of all our needs as they came up. She definitely gets 5 stars right along with the cook and my excellent meal. In the future I will give the North Hi-Way Cafe another chance. read more
