We always enjoy our meals at North Italia. It gets crowded so it's a good idea to get a reservation. We went with some friends on a Tuesday night at 6:30 with reservations. My wife and I split an Arugula & Avocado salad and Squid Ink Tonnarelli. Both were excellent and it was just the right amount of food for a moderate sized dinner for two. The salad is very simple - avocado, arugula, lemon and olive oil. Very fresh and light tasting. The tonnarelli is delicious but beware that it is pretty spicy, on the verge of too spicy but good. It had lots of squid and shrimp and the pasta was wonderful. This is a great place for good food when you're down for a show at ACL. It's a regular spot for us and will continue to be. read more

Wow, this was amazingly bad. This was the smallest and thinnest piece of salmon I've ever had. It was $14 extra just for that sad piece of "fish". It was also extremely dry even though I ordered it medium. It tasted like a frozen fish stick. I think the whole thing was fried? Abomination. The salad was also bland. The cheese (of the 3 pieces they put) tasted like cardboard. You can't even see the cheese in the photo. Sad tiny pieces of avocado. They ran out of the seasonal vegetables I originally ordered. I have no idea what happened here. Our main server was nice. The ambiance had a corporately chain restaurant vibe. Someone else had half of their pizza and left the rest. Guess that wasn't good either. $43 after tip and tax just for this "salad" and a lemonade. And $16 for valet after tip and tax. This is definitely a "never again" in my book. read more

Glad we got a table despite without reserving in advance. There were limited vegetarian options and we got the cacio pepe crust. It was yummy and the crust was just perfect. Yes, it's a national chain and there are so many quaint and local authentic options in Austin, but we specifically went there to check out their cacio pepe martini and gluten-free pizza. To anyone who is GF, their pizza crust is REALLY good. Like, we ate the whole pie. And their branzino? GET IT. Another late post for restaurant week. Had a reservation and was sat right away. The set up was interesting with long separate high tops that could be pushed together for larger groups or separated for smaller parties. They had an outdoor patio which right now would be perfect compared to August when I went. The restaurant week menu gave several Options, I went with the meatballs to start, bolognese and then tiramisu for dessert. Ricky was the team member who took care of me and they did a good job. Close to dessert there was a large party that was sat and I kinda fell off the radar. Took a minute to get dessert and then the check so that would be the only downside. Vibes are always solid, it gets loud but not to the point that you can't hear the person you're eating and chatting with. I have always thought that north Italia is a solid choice for lunch in the downtown area. They offer a variety of pastas, starters, and desserts. I really enjoyed their spicy rigatoni vodka pasta, very cheesy, has a tiny kick from the vodka. The service was a bit slow when I went the last time, had to wait for almost an hour to get my main course..not sure if they had forgotten my order. However, the food definitely made up for it. Parking is tricky in downtown but they also have another location in the domain area with free parking. read more

Very disappointing experience, especially for a family with young children. I came here for lunch with my four children. One of them fell asleep in the stroller while we were eating. We were literally halfway through our meal, with my other children still eating, when the staff told us that we either had to leave the stroller at the entrance or move our entire family to a larger table outside. It was around 104°F (40°C) outside, so moving four children -- including a sleeping baby -- outdoors in that heat in the middle of our meal was obviously not a reasonable option. Because we refused to move outside, their solution was to separate me from my family. They seated me alone at a small table for two with my sleeping baby in the stroller, while my husband and the rest of my children had to stay at another table and finish their meal separately. I found the entire situation incredibly inconsiderate, uncomfortable, and in very poor taste. I understand that restaurants may have policies regarding strollers and space, but there are respectful and sensible ways to handle situations involving families with small children. Separating a mother and sleeping baby from the rest of their family in the middle of a meal was absolutely not one of them. Unfortunately, this completely ruined what should have been an enjoyable family lunch. I expected much better hospitality and common sense from North Italia. read more

It took a while to come out but, again, it was a busy Friday night. There was an assortment of delicious cheeses and meats. I enjoyed the nuts as well. I had the Diavolo cocktail. It's a great choice if you enjoy mezcal. It had a kick to it, but it wasn't overly spicy. For my main course, I ordered the strozzapreti. It was very good. There was a large portion of food. The sauce was creamy and delicious, and the chicken was well seasoned. I would definitely return to North Italia to try some of their other courses. I went to North Italia this weekend. What a nice vibe walking in from 2nd street with all the twinkling lights. We were quickly seated and served but our waiter was kind of all over the place. It took us a bit to get our drinks because he seemed distracted, he took half our drink order and ran off. The espresso martini was top notch so I wasn't complaining. The calamari was very tender but honestly seemed like it could have been tastier if cooked just a bit longer. Apparently there are many items that aren't on the menu but you can still order like the spaghetti with meatballs, so don't be afraid to ask. I had the grilled branzino with veggies. It was buttery and flakey and served with out of this world veggie medley and sauce. The host took awhile to greet me as she was on the phone, so I was understanding. Once seated, I was greeted by my waitress (Edith). She was really helpful, walked me through the menu and the day's specials. For dinner, I started with the grilled bread and olive oil. Wasn't quite what I was expecting. I thought it would be bread that you dip into olive oil; but rather it was drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It was tasty, but again, not quite what I thought it would be. For my main, I ordered the Chicken Pesto. Mmmm!!! SO good! I'm a big fan of pesto and this dish definitely delivered. Overall, I enjoyed my dinner.
