I really love love good Cacio e Pepe, so wanted to try juniper for a long time, finally decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary yesterday, and glad we picked juniper, ambience, food and service everything was great. Our server Jake was very attentive, welcoming and provided us a wonderful service. We ordered focaccia, Cacio e Pepe, Cavatelli. I loved my Cacio e Pepe, hubby liked his Cavatelli, Focaccia was well made and with whipped ricotta, it was perfect. I got Nonnas kiss and liked it, hubby got Don vitro and liked it. The only disappointment thing was gelato, they had sweat cream and honey, we ordered both, sweet cream was meh but was eatable, but honey, it was too sweet, like sweeter than honey itself, couldn't eat after one bite. The ambiance and atmosphere of Juniper is perfect. Beautiful bar, (relatively) small and intimate seating area, and perfect lighting for a nice evening dinner! We came during their happy hour, and the service was solid. Our waiter continuously checked on us throughout the meal, without making us feel like we were being rushed. We ordered an assortment of things: House Focaccia, Little Gem Lettuce, Cacio E Pepe, Rigatoni, and the Double Cut Pork Chop. My daughter picked dinner at Juniper for her 20th birthday celebration with the family. We had reservations and were seated upon arrival. The space is vibey and feels cozy and chic. I ordered a glass of wine, while the rest of our group favored nonalcoholic options. We were sad to see their delicious Italian sodas are no longer on the menu, but that was a minor disappointment. We had focaccia, prosciutto with mellon, and the puffy potatoes as appetizers, and a selection of pastas plus the quail for dinner. Everything was delicious and we brought home lots of leftovers. HOWEVER--despite their microscopic size, they were delicious and we inhaled them like we hadn't eaten in days. Zero regrets, just mild portion shock. The rigatoni though?? Chef's kiss. Perfectly al dente, swimming in goodness, and that burrata... omg. I love. I would think about it again. I might dream about it. The pork ragù pasta was... okay. The pasta shape was honestly fascinating--like if pappardelle and fusilli had a giant baby. Very cool, very unique. Flavor-wise, it leaned a bit salty and had this oddly floral, fragrant spice situation happening. I noticed that note in a few dishes and I'm still undecided if I'm here for it. Jury's out. Last but absolutely not least: the broccolini. A full-on showstopper. A mountain of cheese, bread crumbs, and happiness. Order it. Don't question it. We tried a few pasta dishes here and had a bit of a mixed experience. We ordered the rigatoni, cacio e pepe, and a ragu pasta. The cacio e pepe, which seems to be one of their most popular dishes, was unfortunately the most disappointing for me. The food was tasty. We made a reservation and they sat us in this "new" front room with zero decor, plastic chairs and tables, and only a concrete pillar as the view. It was over 80 degrees the entire time we ate and the ac unit was above our table dripping down onto the food. If we make a nice dinner reservation spending over $200 for an anniversary, I would expect to be able to actually walk into the restaurant. This seating area didn't even go past the hostess stand. No option for ensuring dining room seating is available. I would not go back unless that area is clearly made for separate reservations as it was so disappointing. read more

What an interesting spot. Right off the main road, the entrance is a little hard to find because the door is large and the handle isn't a normal door handle. Right when you walk in it takes a moment for your eyes to adjust because it's very dark. The space is intimate and has an open area with the chefs behind the seating area so you can somewhat see them cooking meals. Service was great. Very attentive and knowledgeable. The inside was filled with soft mashed potatoes and the sauce that came with it was light and creamy. The hamachi wasn't really worth it. It came with 2 small slices. I wouldn't recommend this. For pastas, I would recommend the rigatoni a la vodka. It has a little bit of spice to it and was cooked perfectly Al dente. If you don't like Al dente, you might not enjoy this dish but a few of my friends who don't particularly enjoy Al dente pasta really enjoyed this dish. 4.5 stars I feel like this spot deserves five stars but it's tough because I don't feel like I got the full experience - so four for now. We sat at The Chef's counter which was super fun because we got to see the chefs prepare everything in live action. We ordered off the à la cart menu: Puffy Potato ($13) - 6 puffy potato sticks straight out of the fryer. They were a savory cheesy delight and were crispy fried on the outside with a creamy interior. The Dijon whipped dip served with it was a bit too strong for me. Rigatoni ($25) - so amazing. The best dish we tried. The noodles seemed freshly made and were delightfully chewy. The vodka tomato sauce was extremely rich and had a lot of depth, flavor wise. Hamachi ($18) - the hamachi was complemented with a delicate yuzu taste and crunchy pistachios, but it was so small, more like a nibble. The staff were very polite and attentive. In short I definitely want to come back and try the tasting menu because it looked amazing and then I will probably update my review to a five star. We got the focaccia and potato puff for appetizers. They were excellent. For pasta, we did the cacio e pepe-amazing! Everyone loved it! We also got the risotto and scallops which I would skip next time. The risotto had flavor but I don't enjoy it as much. Focaccia was warm and fresh, the prosciutto and pear was really good. The wagyu was sooooooo good!! Cooked perfectly. I asked for medium and it came more medium rare but it was so good so I didn't mind. We wanted cake for desert and they didn't have any on the menu so the server gave us an off menu option. They do have valet parking but I found a street free spot around the corner super close. My only sort of complaint is we say in the patio and it was 30 degrees outside. Went to Juniper for their Valentine's Day set menu experience. Made a reservation in advance (which required a credit card but doesn't actually charge the meal price unless you do not show up). Were seated immediately at the chef's table where we could watch the inner working of the kitchen. The inside of the restaurant is nice, a darker moody kind of vibe amid all the rest of the food scene in this area. The team was nice to us, we basically had direct access to both of the main bartenders sitting where we did. Food came out at a very reasonable pace, and we were in and out in just under and hour and a half. The food itself was good but nothing super special (and quite expensive for the portions). The set menu included the following portions (1 per person): Apps, pasta, entree, dessert. FOOD Apps: The beet salad was good, the crisp potato with caviar was okay [but included an additional up charge so did not seem worth it] Pasta: our favorite part Entree: the steak option was cooked well but not seasoned at all, the pork option was very flavorful. Both seemed like pretty small amounts for an entree Dessert: a rolled chocolate ganache with some crunchies and ice cream - pretty solid DRINK The mixed drinks looked good visually, but none of a few options were my personal taste so I got a glass of wine. Had the best birthday dinner a girl could ask for! Special shout out to our server, who if I remember correctly was named Abby, and all of the Juniper team that made this celebration feel extra special. Of all our favorite spots in Austin, I chose to come here for dinner the day of my birthday with my husband. We loved the tasting menu when we first tried Juniper and while this one looked enticing, we decided to order from the a la carte menu this time. We also made sure to take advantage of their recently added apperitivo hour (Sunday through Thursday 5-7 PM). The fiadoni is a literal explosion of cheesy goodness that even impressed my husband who doesn't typically like cheese. The big eye pizzelle was a delicious few bites of a crunchy-taco-look-like with tuna, a fresh way to start the meal. From the a la carte, the focaccia was a little crunchier than expected but wonderfully fluffy on the inside and came with a creamy ricotta spread. The oysters surprisingly stole the show - the herb oil really made it pop! Both pasta dishes we ordered were amazing: a perfectly cooked risotto and a rigatoni alla vodka that would make one ready to die and go to heaven - hands down my favorite dish of the night. We were so full by this point that it was a miracle we had anymore room in our stomaches but we pressed on, motivated by how beautifully the wagyu NY strip was presented, it's juiciness going along so well with the charred broccolini. We had literally no more stomach space but our server was so kind as to treat us to a decadent scoop of gelato and a glass of Montenegro for us to try which paired nicely. As if Abby hadn't already spoiled us enough, she made sure we left with a little gift of make-at-home pasta. Service was impeccable right from the start. For first timers in Austin and at Junipers we were absolutely blown away. We were celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary and our honeymoon and this was the right call for an upscale dinner. I made a note on open table about the occasion we were celebrating and they went above and beyond. Juniper is a nice restaurant with a polished atmosphere, but overall I did not find it particularly memorable. It leans toward a very classic Italian pasta experience without offering much that stands out. The service was good though. We tried several appetizers. The puffy potato was probably the most unique, with an interesting shape and a punchy dijon mustard sauce. The little gem lettuce did not taste all that fresh and reminded me of something prepackaged. The focaccia had a dense texture with an overly crisp exterior and was not my favorite, as I've had way better focaccia. I really enjoyed the pear and prosciutto, exactly what you'd expect but done well. The tuna crudo was beautifully plated but tiny and didn't leave much of an impression. For entrees, the cacio e pepe was a bit dry and lacked richness. I prefer Intero's or Emmer and Rye's. The vodka sauce pasta had a nice flavor but felt a little one dimensional. The risotto was enjoyable, and the agnolotti had a nice tang and stood out a bit more. The chicken had great texture but the sauce didn't quite hit the mark. Since we were a group of girls we thought it best for sharing family style. The depth of flavor in the dishes were lacking for my taste. The noodles didnt quite have that bite. The steak was a bit sweet which isn't particularly my style. I just feel for the price point the food could have spoken to my taste buds a little more. Don't get me wrong, I will pay good money for good food. But the food should represent for sure. Maybe the tasting menu dishes might tell a different story? I can't believe it took me so many years to finally dine-in at Juniper. I had ordered take-out here during Covid and fallen in love with their cacio e pepe. I was excited to return for my birthday. I loved everything about this place - what a hidden gem in Austin. This place has elegant and minimalist decor, with a large open kitchen which is delightful to watch, and excellent service with attentive staff through and through. Our food was incredible - every dish we tried from the appetizers to the entrees to dessert. The only one aspect they could improve upon was their cocktail menu but I'm guessing their bigger focus is on their wine selection. And oh, I was a bit surprised at the dog seated inside (hygiene and all). That pea risotto was out of this world and the puffy potato fritters as well as the eggplant appetizer were mouth-watering delicious. The cacio e pepe was also as good as I remembered it to be. Once again, I renew my request to add a fresh vegetable side (the asparagus was not vegetarian) to complement the carb loading.
