We never go out for Valentine's Day on purpose due to crowds, rushed service, etc. against our better judgment, here we are. And I'm thrilled we did!!!! It was a beautiful (cold) night on the lake. Our table was against the window with a view. Our server, also a teacher because we chatted, was professional, knowledgeable, and helpful with the menu. The Valentine's drinks were great! I had the raspberry sour (or 2) and my husband had maple bourbon. We got a scallop appetizer which was amazing, we both ordered lobster bisque, and we ordered the elk and filet and shrimp. For me, I like thicker richer bisque, and again, for me, the stuffing in the shrimp was more "Mayo" ish than I like. However, my husband loved it all. My mashed potatoes were not flavored (which was perfect) and my husband's were flavored with truffle which he loved. The meal, server, setting, and the owners were amazing. We have been to the Blue Heron Tavern 9 times and we have had fabulous meals each time. The overall experience is serene and tranquil as you overlook the lake. Certainly this is not an inexpensive evening, however the food, service, cocktails, and hospitality are well worth it. This past weekend, Saturday night, was another meal to remember. We started off with a Peach Aperol Paloma and La Beaume cocktails expertly prepared. For starters we ordered the 'Burrata and Grilled Peaches' (Over arugula with sliced almonds, prosciutto, and honey garlic vinaigrette) and the Fried Calamari (I do not have the full description - but soft & tender!). Two glasses of well priced and delicious wine; and for our entrees: 'Black Peppercorn Crusted Elk Tenderloin' (Foie gras truffle whipped potato, snap peas, topped with fried onions, whole grain mustard cream), 'Pan Roasted Herb Crusted Berkshire Pork Chop' (Over roasted potatoes, zucchini, and squash, topped with apricot chutney and pickled red onion) and 'Seared Scallops' (Fingerling potato crab hash, asparagus, lemon beurre blanc and pomegranate glaze). For dessert we had an espresso martini, chocolate martini and a cup of coffee. I can not remember the last time we had such a spectacular culinary experience. Looked into as a potential wedding venue. First of all, their all inclusive package is not all inclusive. They still try to nickel and dime you for everything! I think the point where I knew they were out of the running is when I asked if I could move a cheese platter that I would be paying for in the all inclusive package from day 1 to day 2 and was told no. If I'm going to spend $50k+, the only answer to that question should be yes. Also, their pricing isn't seasonal, a flat rate every day of the year just means their customers are the ones getting ripped off. For the money they charge, they should reinvest some back into their property. Their gardens could use some color. Guests have to drive past a trailer park and machinery. They really should build a pole barn on the property to hide the machinery from guest view. Food was ok, but small portions and nothing that blew me away. read more

Down a dirt road, over a wooden bridge this place sits alone on the north shore of Swartswood Lake. Along with the beautiful sunset views of the lake what really blew us away was the food. After tasting the food, this place instantly became one of my favorites. This quiet, cozy and secluded restaurant is well worth the drive. read more

We had a great 1st time experience at the Tavern last night. We started with a round of expertly prepared and presented cocktails (mine was a whisky sour special). Round of appetizers, salads & soups enjoyed by all. The gumbo was very smooth, and full flavored without being overly seasoned, my husbands mushroom soup also looked very good. For entrees My husband had the elk med/rare it was beautifully presented, mine was the bone in pork chop with batter fried artichoke heart, the salmon also looked well prepared and everyone in our party of 4 savored every bite. Others at our table who have eaten at the tavern several times said they had never been disappointed. We tried to book a smaller wedding there but their coordinator, Emma, continued to drop the ball. She wouldn't respond, and when I'd call back days later she would say, "Oh, I was just going to call you." Then nothing. We never did receive pricing or the information we requested - so after 4 tries, we gave up and booked another venue. Thanks for nothing. You clearly don't need our business. read more

Absolutely lovely. I was there for the weekend. The food was delicious and the "inn" was charming. Not a detail was missed!

Wow. Just wow. This is a great secret kept in Sussex county. We love going out and traveling for nice meals. This one blew us away. Beginning with the ambiance... the original place was here back in the early 1900s and they've kept with the appearance (beautifully restored and additions keep to the traditional style). Old original wood refrigerators, reclaimed bars. Cocktail menu was awesome... I wanted to sample every martini! (Nice job mixing, Amy!), then the meal... I started with the lobster lettuce cups (YUM) and hubby had tasty tuna tartare. Did I mention the warm bread rolls? I believe I skipped that but don't make that mistake! Then we both ordered the sea scallops over potato gratin with crab meat. So delish. Truly the best scallops I've had and I declare, I am a SNOB! This place is not to be missed. My husband and I went to Blue Heron Tavern for our anniversary dinner on Saturday night. I was so happy that they had added fried oysters to the appetizer menu. They were the best that I have had outside of New Orleans. Perfectly cooked. My husband had the NY Strip and I had the Scallops. I was concerned about the scallops because the past couple of times I had ordered them elsewhere, I had not been happy, but our waitress said they were the most requested item on the menu, and I absolutely understand. They too, were cooked perfectly. They were tender and firm and tasted delicious. The side with it was so delicious as well. My husband was very happy with his steak dinner also. I just had my wedding at the North Shore House in October. The lake was the most beautiful ceremony location and the sunset was an amazing added bonus. Aside from the sheer beauty of this location/venue, the staff was incredibly attentive before the wedding and during. I had many options to choose from for cocktail hour and dinner. The food (including the cake) and the service ended up being top notch. If you're looking for an amazing venue for your wedding, party, event, you've found it. Recently had a chance to dine at The North Shore House - Blue Heron on Swartswood Lake. This is a tavern that has a sharp old world look and feel. The food is very good but far from a good value. We both started with a very small Bacon Honey Mustard Mixed Greens salad. Again we both ordered the Macadamia Crusted Chilean Sea Bass which included very petit filets. The internet has this entrée listed as $34.00 but the menu presented showed $47.00. The $34.00 pricing would have been more appropriate. Which is correct as the $34.00 still shows on the website? We dine out weekly and the area has to many other regional eateries with great cuisine and value. We will not return. read more

The waitress was nice, the location is scenic, but the food is more about show than taste, and quite expensive. What really caught my attention was how stingy they are. I asked for some blue cheese on my salad and the waitress came back with a skimpy 4 or 5 raisin-size crumbs sprinkled on top. read more

The North Shore House is a hidden gem in the rough. Located in Sussex county, this rustic historic hotel is a great fit for many types of catered events. The beautiful views are truly lovely any time of the year. The "point" lends itself to a perfect outdoor wedding. The venue provides panoramic lake views as a pristine back drop. THIS IS THE CONTINUATION OF MY PREVIOUS REVIEW .......... I mentioned earlier, that I had been at the restaurant on previous occasions, so I think I may qualify as a Men's Room expert. As an expert, I certainly observed it , on earlier visits. But, now besides being usable it is also quite beautiful. I point specifically to the tall porcelain urinal. It's a true classic item to view and use. It also has excellent European hand soap. I rate this men's room with five stars. To review: 1) a beautiful spacious restaurant with new furniture, fixtures etc. ... and interiors that are also beautiful and classy. 2) the outside grounds, with lake views, can only be anticipated now 3) ample, well lit and safe parking areas 4) interesting and exciting marketing concepts add to the enjoyment at this establishment . All with a clean, classic look. 5) good balanced menu items and categories. 6) nice entree serving procedures. The use of other members of the wait staff to deliver everyone's meal at the same time makes the patron feel important . 7) cordial and warm hostesses and other personnel enhance everything. 8) the staff is often unsure of what they should be doing and what procedure to use, 9) additional work is suggested on the rolls and better takeaway containers would add to the restaurant 10) Plus make sure you take a second look at the men's room and presumably the ladies room as well. They are memorable and beautiful (besides very clean). Overall, the rating for this restaurant is 4.5 . Down, slightly, only by a still, inexperienced staff. We are so glad we found North Shore House! Our wedding was postponed due to COVID, and due to circumstances at the pervious venue we had to move. From the last-minute visit in the middle of December to view the venue, through leaving Sunday after the wedding, they made everything as simple and easy as possible. We chose to stay the whole weekend, arriving Friday and leaving Sunday. We did our rehearsal dinner and after party on site, and utilized the hotel rooms above the restaurant as well. The hotel was amazing, and had some of the most comfortable beds we have slept in in a long time. Each meal was just excellent. Dietary needs were always considered, and all the food was fresh and delicious. The flourless/allergen friendly chocolate cake was mind blowing. Everything contributed to a great experience. The hotel rooms, the food, the staff, the location, everything was incredible, and every person who works here was so kind, helpful, and accommodating. Guests are still telling us about something or someone that made the day even more memorable (beyond the whole marriage part), and we have received so many comments on how the staff went above and beyond to ensure our guests had the best possible experience. There was a bad traffic accident that closed the road outside the venue, and a downed tree that damaged some power lines, but Eric had such seamless coordination with the local fire and police departments that as the bride I didn't know anything was wrong at first. We had to delay the start of the ceremony due to one of the guest busses being stuck, but Louise generously offered to extend our end time to accommodate the delay for no extra cost. We cannot recommend enough that you should hold your wedding or other celebration at North Shore House. Be it for the day or for the weekend, Eric, Kelly, Louise, and everyone else made us feel incredibly well taken care of, and we hope you allow them to do the same for you on your special day! read more

North Shore House was an awesome experience! The property is just gorgeous so if you love to take in the colors of the season then it's a must visit for that reason alone. The wine was tasty, the service was friendly and accommodating and the food was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. We went to the North Shore house for our anniversary. We had just heard that it was open and the chef was Ken Salmon. We had enjoyed his cooking previously and were happy to hear that he was at North Shore House! We sat at a table with a beautiful view of the sunset over the lake! We enjoyed two delicious cocktails while enjoying the cheese and meat board which offered crispy baguettes and a variety of wonderful cheeses, meats and other tasty nibbles and sauces that perfectly complimented them. The serving was so generous that we took some home with us! Our entrees were of shrimp and fillet dinner and seared tuna were perfectly prepared. Both were delicious. We enjoyed a small plate serving of a variety of desserts that were offered that evening. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. They oversee everything to make it a perfect experience. The food is the best I have ever had. I have been there twice with family and everyone was impressed by the presentation and the atmosphere. The quality and taste of every single dish impressed everyone at our table. We were so impressed with our food that we gave each other "a bite" and everyone loved everything they tasted starting with the appetizers and finishing with dessert. Even the mixed drinks were fantastic. I wish this family all the best because they put their heart & soul into making this a success and it shows.
