(Bar only visit, Saturday 7pm-ish)
When I first heard a locally-owned, 24 hour diner was coming to Greenwood, I was pretty stoked. Then I heard it was taking over the Yen Wor, which really had me confused and deflated the balloon a bit. The Yen Wor as a restaurant certainly needed to go. The food was barely palatable, the restaurant was consistently empty and it's reputation was by far the worst in the Chinese-American restaurant game in Greenwood.
The bar had served the purpose of being the one alternative to the Rickshaw for the karaoke community (before the Baranof entered the scene) and seemed to have a loyal clientele who loved the drinks stiff and the crowd a bit on the sketchy side. The problem was the jarring maroon and turquoise color motif, the run-down condition of the bar itself and the slew of violent outbursts that have seemed to plague the bar from time to time as far back as I can remember.
North Star & it's newly dubbed "Shang-Hai Room" sounded good on paper, but still inhabits a building that feels tired of it's endless concept changes and the overall passing of time. I'll certainly take IT over a new condo development, but I digress....
When we first entered the Shanghai-Room, we immediately understood the comment we'd heard floating around so much. "It's too dark in there". Nope, I didn't think so. I LOVE a dimly lit, seedy little lounge. The lighting was perfect for a late night karaoke romp or for slipping into a dry martini. Maybe not so great for sampling food we discovered, though. I like to see what I'm eating.....call me goofy, but yeah, a little TOO dark and mysterious if you're eating in the bar,
Bar food was non-pretentious and standard. Prices seemed reasonable. We'd missed Happy Hour, but glanced at the menu and it looked to be a couple bucks off normal priced apps. Ordered nachos with high expectations from a fellow Yelper's photo, but ended up being pretty run-of-the-mill and not accompanied with guac, sour cream or any kind of salsa. Lame. Didn't feel like putting the bartender out as he seemed disinterested in the finer details of service ;)
Service was the more-common-these-days imported "Capitol Hill Hipster"-style (that is, once we were actually acknowledged.) You know the type: Seattle-freezey one-liners. Disengaged vibe.Thinly-veiled angst. It's sadly starting to permeate our little neighborhood, as Hipsters roll north in search of cheaper rents. Satisfactory overall, as our transaction was limited to a quick snack and drink.
Left thinking karaoke nights were probably going to be pretty special here. Sure, they might not be able to shake the old reputation entirely and they've simply thrown some paint on the old building's exterior and interior (the interior of the bar is all done in a pretty cool crimson and black scheme), but this bar should be fun in it's newest incarnation. Bar top seems to be redone a bit and more accessible from all angles. The far west side has finally been opened up for more space and now fitted with some super sexy booths, lit with only a single, glowing red candle holder. Yowza.
We'll be back soon for the diner. Although the sparseness of the floor plan and lack of interior creativity looks a bit hard on the eyes, I'm excited to give some of these breakfast items a try (savory rolls? I'm in!) read more
