I love crocheting. It's one of my top 3 creative/destress outlet, and when I'm in town I usually go to WEBS because they have an extensive selection of yarns but I wanted to give this small business a shot. They were having a good sale and I ended up picking up some merino wool yarns. The ladies there were very attentive. I see what others say about feeling like they're interrupting. The day I went, there seemed to be a class in progress. I overheard the instructor talking about the right way to stich arm pieces of sweaters so they don't look overly puffy and I remember thinking that that is actually a good tip and if I lived in the area, I'd probably sign up for classes even though I already know how to crochet, you can always pick up something you didn't know. I loved how they were sitting around the table happily chatting, it looked so cozy. I guess it depends on the persons viewpoint, some people could view that as if they're distracting but I see it as part of the experience. A sense of community. I shopped around them because there were yarns near where they were at, I didn't bother them, they didn't bother me. I got my yarns (see pic) and am looking forward to another great crochet project. read more

The only reason I've given 4 and not 5 stars is that there are stairs to get downstairs where some yarns are displayed and it's hard for me to get down there anymore. Space is expensive in downtown Northampton and I can't expect Linda, the owner, to move just to accommodate me so... I like a yarn store where you're greeted when you walk in and where you can easily get help. You can here! There's a good selection of yarn for every need and the place has a cozy and friendly vibe. There's a common working table with chairs where people are quite often working on projects or taking a class and a couple of other chairs for the non-shopping partners of patrons to take a break. read more

There are two storefronts, one side only has kids/baby yarns and the other has all other types of yarns. They have a nice yarn selection for such a tiny space, especially for smaller or local producers & dyers. But I hate coming here. I always feel like I'm interrupting the people who are knitting at the table. It's just not a pleasant or welcoming atmosphere. read more

I made a trip here while I was walking around downtown. I was in Northampton to visit WEBS, but stopped to have some lunch and saw this store so I thought I'd investigate. They had a very nice selection of quality yarns, but I kind of felt like I was interrupting by trying to buy something. Visited this yarn store for the first time yesterday. I live a few hours from this place but happened to be in the area and had looked up yarn stores on Yelp. Many of the reviews were not that good in terms of the staff being friendly. However, I have to say that I did not have this experience in this store. I found them to be very friendly. I'm glad I did go in and gave it a try despite the reviews because it is a beautiful shop with a really nice selection of yarns. I spent a long time in the shop looking and gathering the yarns I wanted to purchase. The shop keepers were really nice as they left me alone to browse (I personally dislike it when store staff follow you around and don't leave you alone) but answered all of my questions when I had them. I ended up buying quite a lot of yarn. I would definitely drop by there again if in the area. read more

I just love this store. Linda does a great job, has a wonderful selection of yarns. In addition, she has a wealth of knowledge and is willing to correct and instruct a knitter through a difficult pattern, or, just through a rough patch. I live a distance from the store, but keep going back - as often as I can. I wish I lived closer !!! read more

It has been my "go to" place during that time, for anything pertaining to knitting. As a walk-in customer the groups of knitters have always welcomed me. My experience has been that the help there is consistently patient and cheerful. They have always been encouraging and quick to remedy any difficult problem. I have also been happy with my purchases over the years. It is a store and resource of the highest quality! I usually go to Webs for my knitting needs. But as I work near Northampton Wools, I went in to see if I could find knitting needles. The clerk was clearly on a personal call during the entire time I was there. I was unable to find the needle size but wanted to ask her if she has them in the back or something. When I tried asking her questions (while she was still on the social call), she completely ignored me. What a customer service! I am never coming back!!! read more

I was there on Sunday and ended up purchasing lace weight yarn for a project. My son is in college nearby so I have been in the store about 3-4 times over the last two years. Each time the employees have been as helpful as they were Sunday - giving me information, recommendations and personal opinions as necessary to help me make up my mind. read more

I remember as a kid when there were many knitting shops. What happened? They are few and far between now. But I found a great one in the center of Northampton, 10 minutes from my home in Holyoke. It's Northampton Wools on Pleasant Street. ( right off of Main St.) In this age of technology people are buying yarn online. I don't understand it. I need to see and feel the yarn that I buy. When I want to find an excellent selection of high quality yarn, Northampton Wools is my first choice. This little shop has a comfy, welcoming feel. There are cozy chairs to sit and knit in. Classes are offered, and you actually learn from them (I've taken one. It was great!) I have never had a problem with customer service. I'm a "free range" type of customer, and I really like how I can go in to the shop, take my time and locate which yarn I want to buy without being pestered from pillar to post. The shop owner is a knitting industry recognised pattern designer, her work has been featured in several worldwide knitting publications. Great wool, great shop, great people. The staff is always helpful with selection of yarns and always willing to give help. I love walking in and seeing other knitting at the table. Lovely selection of yarns. A fantastic array of buttons as well. The set up of the store is awkward. The knitting classes and get togethers happen in the front of the store right as you walk in on a table that is odd to have to try to pass. It's like running the gauntlet for the privilege to shop here. I've always felt like I was interrupting if I went in to shop during a class. It also made me feel as if I were an inconvenience as a shopper. It's not the staff that makes it awkward- it really is the setup- hence the 4 stars for all the good stuff going on here! read more

I purchased 3 Groupons with plans of attending a 3 hr. knitting class with my 2 teenage daughters. I called to make reservations for the class and was told that all Groupon classes have happened and had nothing scheduled. I told the woman that my Groupon has not expired. She told me she was sorry and to call Groupon for a refund. I asked if they would honor them at a future date maybe in September and was told no. VERY BAD BUSINESS. They just missed out on 3 potential future customers. It felt like the woman couldn't get off the phone fast enough. I will never enter their doors again. read more

I am a continued customer, however this past weekend went in there and spent 30.00 on a a hank of yarn. I asked the sales person if she could put nto a ball for me. She did try and it got tangled. She then told me I would have to do the rest at home. I have spent 4 hours untangling the yarn. I feel like I just had the worst expereince ever. Again, I love to shop local and know that this isn't the friendlist shop, cut I go. I just can't see gong back any time soon. I also aksed for help with patterns and it was like I was putting her out. Just awful ecperience. read more

If I could give Northampton wools more then a 5 star rating I would! They have moved and are in a much bigger, brighter space. It is just two doors down from their old place. The yarn is beautiful, the patterns are great, and the staff is friendly and helpful. I can't wait to go back. read more

Beautiful yarn in this shop! I was impressed. There were so many that I was tempted to buy even after being spoiled by bargain prices at the Webs tent sale. I found a magazine I haven't been able to find in any other yarn shops or book stores (and I've been looking for weeks). The girl at the counter was super friendly on our visit. I came home with some adorable buttons and a couple skeins of beautiful yarn. read more

Cozy shop, but unfriendly people. Love to look around at the great yarns they carry, but feel very uncomfortable because whoever is working seems to watch me suspiciously while carefully ignoring my needs for infirmation, or ask if I need help in a cold, off-putting way. And God forbid you have a question, this will bring a response that ranges from incredulity regarding your stupidity or condescension. At one point I decided to take a beginner's knitting class (I crochet, but never knitted) and was told I had to pick a sweater to make. For a six week class? I objected, but was told that was the right way to start and it would be no problem. When class started the instructor seemed put off that I did know how to start (cast on) or how to knit. This raised my stress level several notches. The class was fairly small, but given the amount of help each of us needed most of my classes were spent sitting and waiting. I never finished more than about 6 inches of the back portion of my sweater because I kept having to pull it out for a variety of reasons. This seemed to aggravate the instructor more than it upset me which is saying something. Even after taking the class I felt uncomfortable visiting the store, and now shop only at Webs or online. read more
