Tried more of their dinner items. The sliced beef in sour soup is super tasty. Wow. Not sure what kind of crack they put in it. Nice peppery kick. Plenty of beef slices and enoki mushroom. I really have to recommend this dish. Also had a pile of their skewers. Taiwanese sausage, chicken gizzard, and 2 flavours of wings. Not the cheapest, but similar in pricing to the competition. Everything got gobbled up. Delicious. Honestly I wish more people knew about this place. I think the only thing stopping them is the rather "bad" (not too visible) location. Went for their lunch ayce buffet. It used to be 16.88 but now they upped it to 18.88 The first time I went there was crab and braised pork belly. The second time there were clams and lamb neck? The things that were the same: tomato egg, dumplings, steamed baos, chineze fried donut, and cold dishes like bean sprouts, smashed cucumbers, tea egg, tofu dessert. They also have hot soy milk for drinks. Their deep fried chinese donut has got to be the best I've ever had in my life. With the price of a pair of fried donut being over $6 these days, I get my fix here. Other things are standard, good but not outstanding. I really like having soy milk to drink instead of water. $18.88 is getting a little steep for a limited choice buffet with not too many meat choices. The crab/clam are a nice addition but if there are days without it, it wouldn't be worth. I would rate the food from this place higher than the similar chinese lunch box style place in richmond, K squared mansion. read more

Cool atmosphere and the service was attentive. It wasn't busy for a Friday night from 8-11pm but the place opens till 2. We ordered a few skewers and felt they all tasted the same w the cumin (?) powder on top. The beer was served in a just cleaned warm mug so it wasn't that cold. We saw others order like their own beer on tap which looked pretty cool. The sauerkraut fish was good and it was kept warm the whole time. I felt good and warm inside. I wanted to try their rock snails but it was seasonal so will have to go back. read more

I always have my reservation in eating skewers because I am not a big fan of cumins. However, their spice blend was pretty mild in cumin and it even had a hint of sweetness. We were going to try out the Korean place next door but they are full but lucky Northern BBQ has a table for us We were quite impressed with the place. First of all, the place is big enough to park our stroller at the table and still get a high chair for baby. Secondly, I am a sucker for cute interiors so the design makes the dining experience more enjoyable. Last but not least, the food is actually pretty good. We ordered a bunch of skewers, stinky tofu and the shedded chicken with jelly fish. I skipped out on the organs stuff since it's not my thing. Yes, we ordered a lot of meat skewers. I thought about ordering veggies skewers but the price doesn't make sense to me. I could have bought the whole veggie for the price they charge for a small portion of it. Squishy likes the stinky tofu but it turns out it wasn't for me. The sticky tofu that I had in mind was the ones I had at Taiwan night market where the tofu was crispy and served with pickle vegetables. The stinky tofu here is more like braised tofu topped with their spice blend. The shredded chicken with jellyfish has a funny story lol I initially thought that maybe the jellyfish is different too but it turns out they forgot to add it the dish. Someone came out and added it back on half way through lol Overall, I am happy with the place and definitely will be coming back. The food is on the pricy side. Grilled fish - we ordered sauerkraut flavour cuz my friend cannot eat spicy food but it tastes as good as the traditional spicy flavour. Lamb skewers are the best!!! Must try when dine here. A great spot for Chinese bbq with beer. Skewers. Fried rice. Fish. Do you like spicy? They have spicy/chilli powder on the table with other seasonings so you can add extra seasoning if you feel like it. In the daytime they also offer a buffet. read more

Craving for skewers and found this place near the neighborhood. I love the atmosphere and the way they design the restaurant. It really makes you feel like in a bar in China. Sometimes you don't go to a fancy restaurant because it's a good value. You go for the vibe for the ambience. This is why I come to this place just to enjoy a nice Friday. It is not a fancy restaurant but a nice place to chill. The food is amazing. Make sure bring 2-3 friends along when you go to the restaurant due to there is a min order on skewers. Another tip is don't order too much skewer at one time. Even they put the skewer on the grill the flame doesn't really keep the food warm. This is more of a 3.5 star place. My friends and I came to check out Northern BBQ while a friend was visiting from TO. I'm not sure if I would call this a quiet place.... Or at least the night we went we were sitting by a super (annoyingly) loud group of people. In any case, we were seated and looked over the menu. When we were ready to order we were told we could write on the (paper) menu. We ordered some (lamb, beef, pork) skewers, fried noodles with lamb, appetizer quad platter (cold cucumber & pork head, chilli with thousand yr egg, deep-fried yellowtail, and jellyfish skin with cabbage), deep fried chicken skin and BBQ eggplant. We also ordered several drinks. The food was pretty good. The only thing I didn't like was when the skewers came, we weren't told what was what. The skewers were also place on this aluminum tray which had a tea light (?) meant to keep the meat warm.... Don't think that made any difference. The drinks we ordered was mainly based on what other patrons had on their table... Honestly I have no idea what those ghetto box drink drinks are called.... Lol. But I will say they were quite good. There was an option to pick the type of alcohol (vodka/rum etc) and I thought I picked either Smirnoff or Stoli but instead they brought Absolut instead. I guess they think all vodka is inter-changeable and that is not the case.... Absolut is garbage. They are a newer restaurant so I'll give them some slack. They not only have bbq skewers but also have fish hotpot and other dishes too. Went on a a Friday evening didn't have any issues getting a table for two without reservations! There is also free parking in the parking lot and free side street parking so very convenient. read more

The decor was very cute, lots of neon signage.The beef noodle soup was tasty, not spicy but can be if you ask. The chinese donut was freshly made. There's not too many places that do that and you can taste the difference. Service was great! Can't wait to come back to try the BBQ skewers. read more
