Steel & oak brewing is a favourite when you want a nice craft beer. It's an a tucked away location in New Westminster and often they will have food trucks outside. It's sometimes very quiet and other times it is very lively and busy in there. I've only ever gone to grab a beer or to buy some to take out. Steel & Oak has become one of our go-to hangout spots in New West. Their Dark Lager is hands down my favorite--smooth, rich, and just really well-balanced. I'm not a huge fan of their IPA (a bit too hoppy for my taste), but that's more personal preference than anything else. Really like their cider too! The food truck outside is such a fun touch, and the dirty fries or onion rings are total winners as sides with the beers--loaded, flavorful, and exactly what you want with a pint. The space itself is cozy and modern and filled with greenery, but it can get super loud, especially on trivia nights or events. So if you're going for a quiet catch-up, pick a less busy time. That said, the service is always friendly and quick, and the crowd is very New West--cool, relaxed, and inclusive. It's a great place to chill, support local, and enjoy some solid craft beer. Best brewery in town - hands down! I first heard about them when I joined their Wednesday Run Club. Nothing like enjoying the sunshine with their beers out in the patio after a good solid run by the quay. The staff is friendly and welcoming. We came through here after deciding to stay in New Westminster for a couple days. We usually find that breweries are kid friendly and a good place to relax, Steel & Oak was no exception. While I wish they had more seating, it was plenty for us and our toddler to hang our and meet some great people. The beer was really enjoyable as was the food. We decided to stay and have a couple of rounds before heading back to our place. It has such a great vibe and was so nice to see so many of the people know each other from town. Good service here with friendly servers who will come over often to check on you, and if you need more drinks or anything. A nice community vibe. You can also get donuts from Royal City Donuts here. I do not like beer so I usually get the house made lemonade which is utterly delicious. A bit tart and fuzzy, it hits the spot on a hot summer day. I tried the radler but it was a bit bitter to me. We came here to have chicken and drinks. They partnered with DL Chicken. So now you can get chicken and drinks. Before it was just donuts from Royal donuts. I ordered the homemade lemonade. It was very good. I liked the fact that it was fizzy lemonade. The flavor isn't as strong as the lemonade that you get at the grocery stores and etc. B tried a few other beer here and he said they were ok. The flavor isn't something that would impress him a lot. I believe Steel and Oak is the only craft beer place in New West as of now. I could be wrong. Steel and Oak has really developed a good presence in the New West area. Steel & Oak Brewing is a staple in New Westminster but we've never been to the brewery. It's located in a bit of an industrial area. The closest thing to it is Pacific Breeze Winery. We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 5:15pm) and it was packed. We snagged a table in the back but wow was it ever busy. You go up to the bar to order. There's a few board games up by the entrance (Exploding Kittens, cribbage, Connect 4, etc.). Cool that they play vinyl records (The Beatles and ABBA came on while we were there). They also have merchandise (first time I've ever seen a tap handle on the list). Beer options are split into 6 flagships and 7 limited. They also have a radler, cider and lemonade option for the kiddies. Food options are limited (charcuterie board, chicharron, jerky, sausage and snack jars) but we did spot some people that brought in their own snacks. Nice that that's allowed. - Flight ($8.00 for 4) - we tried the to highway to Helles, quinella (saison with guava and brett), first press coffee stout (cold brew) and Victor barleywine. All the beers are decent but nothing really up our alleyway. Highway to Helles was slightly nutty with a hint of spice. Quinella smelled like guava but taste was subtle. First press coffee stout was very coffee-like. Barleywine wasn't super funky. S&O beers caters more to the mainstream. Happy that we at least finally tried them out. read more

Probably just not the place for me. I'm not a serious drinker, so not having real food or table service (yay, I love queuing at the bar!) means the beer needs to be really good to keep me around for more than one. The pilsners taste the same but, to be fair, I'm not a pilsner girl and it was just a taste test courtesy of a friend. The Dragon Tears was the real standout experience of the night -- It smelled overwhelmingly of...bacon? And not in a good way. We're unsure if this was normal, but my friend and I both noticed it and felt the taste was exactly like old bacon grease from a dirty pan. I've never had anything like it and I'm still not sure if it was even a real thing that happened. That's how specific, strong, and strange the taste was. I felt so guilty about leaving behind a near-full glass on the table, but as a huge introvert I didn't feel like queuing up between other patrons or people waiting for tables to ask if something had gone off. Add that to the list of "me problems" to deal with later. Overall, not the most fun time I've ever had under a bridge. Anyway, like I said, probably just not the place for me. We just popped by for a quick beverage on the way to the Quay and were impressed with their variety of beer. All of them were actually quite tasty, which is not always the case when you go to other breweries. They have theirs locked down. It was my second time here and I was still equally impressed. We did flights - mine included some fruity IPAs, the funf double ipa (dangerous because it's boozy but doesn't taste too boozy), the dark lager, the beach towel, a saison.. Nothing disappointed. The place is spacious and kid friendly. They have board games in the corner you can bring out to play. Only one bathroom (at least from what i could see). Kind of has a coffee shop vibe inside. Bright and airy. Great place to stop for a solid beer in New West. read more

I've been coming here since the start (when it was a lot smaller). Fun little quaint brewery that adds a bunch of little personal touches that sets it apart from all the others. Examples: Lemonade (kids love it), spinning vinyl records & homemade bar food. Speaking of kids, beer is poured in what appears to be child sized glasses. I swear these are the smallest beer glasses in the city. Maybe it's a weird New West bylaw. Line up for Growlers can take forever at times... but those are my only complaints. Beer selection is good. They frequently do collaborations with other local breweries. The staple, Royal City Ale, is very good. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable most of the time. Craft beer in New Westminster? Sold. Parking is available on the side streets, as well as in front if one is really lucky. Plenty of space by the overpass a block away. The place is quite new and it shows. Nice hipster "modern yet vintage" look. going with the theme, all of the furniture looks like it was taken from an old machine shop. The tables are definitely from a machine shop. Staff were friendly and super helpful. They sell snacks as well. The Zack Attack snack mix definitely drew a chuckle. Hopefully they don't get sued over this. The beers look like candy, with all the different shades between red and yellow. The beers are medium in terms of bitterness. The smoked hefeweizen is different (it tastes exactly as it sounds), but other places are coming up with smoked beers as well. The one that stuck out for me was the lemonade radler (also known as a shandy in other parts of the world). Nice, light, and very refreshing on a hot summer day. Special mention. Too bad they don't sell this in canned or bottled form. I will definitely be back for more beer. Recommended. read more

When we ordered our flights, we asked specifically for a mix minus the darkest beer. At first we were nervous because the Dark Lager was put on the flight...which is really dark. But in the end that was actually my favourite beer and I ended up ordering a glass! The Dark Lager tastes like a sweet chocolately coffee to me, and was really refreshing. That goes to show that the staff here really know their stuff and are able to listen to the customer and make great recommendations for their tastes. My second favourite was the Roselle, which is a wheat beer. I think the Dark Lager and Roselle must be some of the more popular options, as it's what our tablemates ended up ordering too (by complete coincidence). We also tried the charcuterie board, which was a good value (although I have a feeling the ingredients came mainly from Costco). Tons of olives, meat, and cheese, plus some hard twisty breadsticks which I wanted more of. I'd definitely order it again. Walking distance from the beautiful riverside walk at the Quay, the only thing missing at this place is a patio. Once they get their extra 20 seats set up (hopefully officially approved soon), it will be 5 stars, no doubt, as the biggest challenge was finding a seat. Although, I really liked how the staff encouraged people from different parties to share a table -- I saw lots of strangers make acquaintance with each other over a pint or a flight because of the forced close quarters. read more

Pretty solid for just opening. The beer flight started out strong with their pale ale. Very flavourful but not overpowering. The red pilsner was suprisingly hoppy, not my fave. They took a risk on the smoked hefe and on its own, I'm not sure I could have a whole pint but a taster was just about right. Perhaps with good bbq meat on the side, it would pair well. And conversely the dry hopped ESB wasn't very hoppy, but very smooth. The tasting room was decorated in a minimalist fashion, a la Main street breweries, very sleek. Cool coaster design. But unfortunately there is only one door, no windows, one small fan and no air circulation. Can't enjoy sipping my beer when sweat is dripping into it. Yum! Okay honestly I have not been to any other brewery but I do drink a lot of beer and I love this place. First of all the beers are really good. So fresh. I usually don't drink beer in less it's from the bottle because (from working in the industry) the lines for draft beer are never cleaned. This place has very short lines therefore they get cleaned. They play records here and the ambiance is so cute. Recommend for a date night or if you want to go somewhere cool with friends. You order at the front and then go sit down. They have limited food options but that's because it's a brewery and they want you to drink beer duh ! We always get the meat board. They also have beef jerky and Tofu jerky/pepperoni! read more

We visited Steel & Oak on yet another recent trip to check out Vancouver's blossoming brewery scene. It's located in a semi-industrial area of New Westminster (thank goodness for GPS) and their decent-sized tasting room was full of patrons on a cloudy Sunday afternoon. We grabbed the last open table and checked out the menu. Of all the breweries we've visited in the past year (and, trust me, there have been several), this was the first offering the option of making your beer into a lemonade. You picked your percentage (50/50, 60/40, etc.) and they added citrussy goodness to your beer. (I gotta admit, not being a fan of the fruity beers I didn't partake - but my friends seemed to enjoy it immensely.) They also had several other varieties of brew available on the day's menu, most in a Belgian style that - while not my favorite - seemed to curry favor with the late-day crowd. I'd read on their website that they have food trucks from time to time; sadly (for my hungry tummy) there wasn't one there on the day we visited. I recommend calling ahead to check the food situation if you're hungry, because there is nothing else remotely close to the brewery. I liked the atmosphere of this new-to-the-scene brewery, and look forward to visiting again to see what sorts of new yummy goodness they've created. I've had Steel & Oak's beers at various spots in Vancouver over the years, and I finally got a chance to check out their taproom in New West last weekend. The taproom was honestly a bit smaller than I expected (and it had a healthy crowd), but the two of us were fortunately able to grab counter seats on a Saturday evening. We grabbed glasses of the Baltic Porter and the Smoked Honey Doppelbock. While the porter was a really solid rendition of the style, I thought the doppelbock was special. That smokey finish really rounded out the sweetness of the beer (doppelbocks are sweet by nature, and the honey plays with that quite nicely). We only stuck around for one round in the taproom, but we filled a couple of growlers with the two beers we had because we enjoyed them so much. They also sell bottles and cans of their offerings if you're looking for a format that lasts longer than a growler. TL;DR: Steel & Oak is brewing fun, delicious beers and selling them at very reasonable prices. You're missing out if you don't stop by and try some! read more

I finally made it to the much buzzed about brand new craft brewery out in New West. On the heels of their hot debut at Vancouver Craft Beer Week, they've debuted a pretty interesting and stellar lineup of brews so far. On my lunch break, I trekked out to the 'burbs on Stewardson Way off the highway into the tiniest corner enclave on Third Avenue under/adjacent a slight overpass/ramp. I ignored my no beer flights rule to more efficiently try all of S&O's brews currently on tap: (from left to right) Royal City pale ale, red pilsner, smoked hefe, and dry hopped ESB. I found the pale ale breezy and smooth going down as the red pilsner was light and crisp in its full-bodied flavour, while the ESB was easy going and mild in its hoppy-ness. For my money, the Beechwood-smoked hefeweizen stood out most for me as a highlight with its unique but strong, smokey flavour. S&O has a strong German malt influence and flavours thanks to its brewer's background and origins. The space was packed with beer drinkers and lovers (mostly middle-aged bald guys wearing shorts if I'm being honest) with a jovial mood and friendly environment in the tasting lounge. Every beer on this liquid lunch was smooth and refreshing with a promising future for this new brewery. read more

Nice little brew pub with delicious fresh beer and a chill vibe. They are always playing records at the bar and the staff is nice. Never had a bad pint here and the prices are fine. Parking can be a pain later in the evenings but it's an ok walk off the New West Skytrain for the determined. read more

I enjoy the use of wood and metal inside. I enjoy its convenient location in New Westminster. But it's a brewery. What about the beer? That's where Steel & Oak and I don't see completely eye to eye. There's a few select choices of well executed beers, a few selections of things that are not-so-well executed. And that's not even accounting for my personal taste preferences. Execution wise, it's a solid three star, if it would consistently hit 30+ BJCP scores for its beer offerings, I could push a fourth star. Taste wise, I tend to go for hoppier, and stouts. That's not their bread and butter, and I can appreciate that. In terms of the Lager (which includes Pilsner) stylings, Steel & Oak is producing some of the more enjoyable ones around. And that's a good enough reason to go and try them. All in All. Pretty decent, and worth a stop when in the area. read more

The place is gorgeous, yet tiny. The staff is busy, but super friendly with fantastic memories. The beer is delicious and inventive as far as I am concerned. Smoked hefe? Smoked lager? Shut the front door. Red pilsner? The Brune? and so on and so forth. They play vinyl which is super hip and adorable. I think you can bring your own in on Thursdays? Maybe I am making that up, google it first. They sell a lot of swag which I am very attracted to for some reason. In case you were wondering. The snack situation is sad though. Steel & Oak are the latest brewery to appear on the grater Vancouver craft beer scene. As of yesterday they are serving up Smoked Hefeweizen, Extra Special Bitter (ESB) and their Red Pilsner. The tasting room is crisp and bright. I really enjoyed both the ESB and the Red Pilsner! They do flights and glasses and growler fills too - no bombers tho. After our Port Moody brewery tour we popped on over to neighboring town to taste the beers over at the Steel and Oak. This brewery had some of my favorite porter. I Loved this place, vinyl records playing in a festive atmosphere, we had a friendly as all get out bartender! The only complaint is that it is small but They do have tables and bar seating. Just weekend crowds flock to this cool tasting room. I was sure to buy some porter sold in bottles to go. read more

I don't get to make my way out to New West much, therefore, this was awesome. This is located in the industrial area of New West, therefore, there are no other shops in site. They do carry Lemon Squares and the best jerky ever. The lemon squares go great with the lemonade beer (so the guy says). They play vinyl records. The guy working there was nice enough to allow me to look through his record collection and played The Clash record for me. Limited seating inside. No outside patio. Ever since I found this place, I've been in love with this little brewery. They don't serve food on location, but you are allowed to bring any kind of food there to eat and pair with beer. I'd usually head to the market nearby the Quay and grab a rack of ribs and bring it over here to pair them with the beer. It's a feast, but much cheaper than a restaurant. Owner is very nice and friendly. He is from Canada but learned his brewing technique from German. I know they have food trucks there once or twice a week. I just haven't had the chance to try that. I came by to check out this brewery last weekend on a Saturday evening. The staff was very helpful and allowed us to taste all the beers. I was smitten with the smoked one, so I ended up buying a glass of that. It's very cool that they provided some games to play with friends while sipping, but there definitely weren't enough tables. It's a small seating area to begin with, but there were only three tables and the rest was counter seating. Even though it was hard to grab a table, I would still come back because it's close to our place and the area needs a hip brewery like Steel and Oak. read more

Great local craft beer. 5 stars because in combination with being awesome- it is also inexpensive. I'm a huge fan of their smoked hefeweizen- not surprised it was such a hit at Vancouver's craft beer week. Usually hefeweizen doesn't appeal to me- but this stuff has won me over. It is phenomenal; I can't stop raving about it. Mild but flavorful and not overly smokey. Craft beers are awesome. You may not be aware of that. But now you do. Vancouver is of course pumping out so many craft breweries that some of them will go corporate and some will fade away. Steel and Oak is still trying to find a percentage of the market. Its great to see a craft brewery in New West (historically known as a beer producing area). Decor is fancy. But only about seating for 30. Place was packed on a Thursday. The beer is well priced at about $4.50 a glass. Flights were $6.50 I believe. If you want to be technical, I had the following: Royal city ale Projekt 001 azacca Projekt 002 sterling? Red pilsner They sorta tasted the same. That's not me being ignorant about beer, I just felt every beer was right in the middle with no distinguishing variation in between flight taste. And that's being harsh on my end I realise. A glass of water to cleanse the palette is required. 3 of 4 beers had a IBU range of 20-30 (hoppy but not overtly bitter) with similar alcohol percentage. I felt like I ordered a flight of 4 but had 1 beer. I have to give this place 3 stars but do not assume this place is bad by any means. I feel this place needs a bit more time to explore their own talent. In a few years, we may in fact see great things from this brewery. read more

Really love this new-ish microbrewery in New Westminster. The tap room is ALWAYS packed and I'm sure that's a testament to their excellent and constantly changing brews on offer. In fact, in the summer they were so popular that they had to take an extended hiatus because they ran out of beer! I have enjoyed everything I've tried from S&O and the taproom staff are really friendly and very knowledgeable regarding their offerings. The record collection is well-stocked with classics and they WILL take requests, making the environment welcoming and sociable. Also, on weekends lately they've had food trucks available for an on-site meal (or some takeaway with your growler fill). Just check them out - you won't regret it! read more
