The unit in the master bedroom was problematic from the start. The bedroom would not cool off. We wound up putting in a window unit while we waited for them to return. The master bedroom unit was the furthest from the original condenser, and we think that the length of the piping was not efficient and that is why the room would not cool off. They installed a separate condenser just for the bedroom. (Generating 2 separate fees every year for maintenance) Periodically, the unit would tick so loudly it would wake us up. They came back out, of course we could not re-create the issue, but they didn't even bother to take a detailed look at the unit to see what was going on in with the bedroom unit. The tech got nasty with me, and was very condescending. When we called them to schedule the yearly maintenance we were told they were out of business. We hired another company who came out. The tech took the unit apart, cleaned it put it back and the unit stopped ticking. All the technician did was clean the unit and snapped everything back into place.

I had another company look at my system as it started acting up. I called Alpha at the recommendation of my Auto mechanic shop. It was earlier in the day so I didn't hear from them for a few hours. I had called other places and they were too busy or not what I was looking for. It was going to reach 100° this week and today was Monday. I received a text from Scott, the owner saying he'd be reaching out soon. Shortly after we spoke on the phone and I told him the symptoms of my system which is an old Trane(it's hard to stop a Trane). We had what I now learned from a non-local family friend was a simple backflow preventer failure. The friend ball parked it around $500-600 max, and that was with up to 2 hours of time taken. This company charged me $1300 for an hour of time with a single part being replaced. Similar parts are available online for $150 (and I assume they get parts even cheaper). My family is leaving town this weekend and I wanted to ensure this got fixed (but it was not an emergency call), so I didn't take time to vet out other contractors. It had been about 3 years or so since I had the last service done by an oil company I no longer use. I called Bosse, created an appointment on a Saturday (WOW - those appointments usually get filled quick!) and waited for the day to arrive. They were scheduled to arrive between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. They arrived around 8:30 which was perfect. On time. :-) He spent a good portion of the time just vacuuming out all the soot, etc. since it had been so long since I had it cleaned. (Yes, MY fault.) He then replaced the filter, the nozzle, etc and took a final efficiency reading (82% - which is great!) Price was reasonable and I was extremely happy that he took the time to clean it correctly, even though it was my fault it was so dirty. I tried to give him a tip for putting him through that but he wouldn't accept it. So I thought that would be the end of it until next year, when I will hire them to clean it again. I was wrong. Two days later I was doing my monthly sump pump testing (in the same area as the boiler) by filing the sump pit with water from a hose attached to the Amtrol Water Tank Bladder. Well, I opened up the valve too quickly and the water pressure whipped the hose out of the sump pit and it liberally soaked the entire boiler before I could get it shut off (and we're only talking about 2 seconds here). The water must have fried the electronics (the relay unit) because the boiler stopped working. I shut off power, removed the unit and dried as much of it off as I could but it didn't work. My boiler was down for the count. I called Bosse again and explained the situation. They told me that they are super busy and backed up with service calls because winter is approaching. But they would try to get someone out to look at it. About 2 hours later she called back and said they were still looking. Ten minutes later their truck pulled into my driveway! Woo Hoo! They came in and diagnosed it as a bad relay unit due to "water damage" i.e. my fault. We had a chuckle about that and he promptly replaced the unit. All is fine again and the boiler is working perfectly again. And I vowed to never try to wash and wax my boiler again! So two thumbs up to Bosse!
