Overall just fine. A local recommended this restaurant for our large group and sure enough, we were seated right away. The service was good - very friendly, and a few people in our group said their food was good - the meatball sub, a burger, and the fish and chips were positively reviewed. A few of us ordered the $30 fish fry and we were all disappointed in the quality and quantity. Our server recommended it over the fish and chips because the fish fry was "less fishy". We definitely felt like dumb tourists spending more for less when the food arrived. While I wouldn't visit this particular place again, if you decide to try it maybe read some reviews to see which selections people like and be careful of expensive recommendations. read more

The only reason I am giving this experience 2 stars is for the food, which was pretty good, however the overall experience was very disappointing. We have been going to the Northern Grill for over 20 years and have never had such a bad service experience, we were charged for a hat on our bill that we had put back and did not intend on buying, thankfully we noticed it on our bill but we were never asked if we actually wanted it, the manager seemed genuinely apologetic to a degree but the employee with the brown/black hair and blonde front hairs (who charged us for it) was not apologetic at all, she was rude, diminishing of the situation and overall an embarrassment to the Northern Grill brand read more

Based on a recommendation, we went here with a group of 11 and made reservations. It was awesome to have them accommodate our large group, as this can be very tricky, especially at high season and right in popular Sister Bay. The service was so efficient and friendly. Food came out fast and everything was absolutely fantastic. The perch fish fry was some of the best I've ever had. Others in the group had salad, pizza, and burgers. This place is excellent! We had a very large group spend the majority of our meals and nights here and the staff took such great care of us. They are so friendly and funny! There is a wonderful outside that has cornhole and space to move around. We tried the pizza, cheese dip, salmon and burgers and they were all really great!! It's a little off the main strip so it was a little more calm than some of the other spots but the staff was sure to show us a good time! read more

We've been to Northern Grill many times (usually just 2 of us), however last month I brought a group of 50 on a Thursday night. To say I was impressed with the food and service is an understatement! Leading up to the night, I worked with Lena to coordinate since the restaurant was also open for regular walk-in diners that night too. We arrived at 7:15pm and everyone was seated by 7:30pm (as promised). Drink orders were taken (Bartender Charlie was amazing getting them all out), food orders were taken and everyone enjoyed the cozy dining room space. As the food arrived, my guests got very quiet as they were all enjoying their delicious meals. I have to admit, I was a little nervous about bringing this large of a group during the start of peak season in Door County; however, Lena, Charlie and their amazing staff nailed it! Started out bad and just continued to get worse. The 4 small plastic glasses brought out for water were all dirty and sticky. We had to ask for new ones, then we saw our waitress looking through all the glasses and putting a lot of them in the dirty dishes bin. Other patrons were also asking for new glasses. The okie dokie artichokie dip was horrible. It tasted like warmed up mayonnaise. When we said something before taking another bite our waitress said "well, it's a house recipe." And the small "bowl" it came in held less than a half a cup. Very meager portion and just not good at all. We don't plan to come back here and we will tell others not to also. read more

My husband and I were in town for a wedding. We had a full day of chaotic traveling, a hotel room mix up, and hardly enough time to eat. So when we walked into this cozy, pine-scented paradise, greeted by friendly faces and even friendlier drink prices - I was certain the plane went down and the Northern Grill & Pud was our final resting place. We swapped stories with the bartenders, indulged in "some" whiskey, and ate an entire 12" pizza each. Holy moley, the pizza. I got a 12" white and inhaled all of it. The pizza has a crunchy, crispy crust. If you are a bready pizza type of person, re-evaluate and consider changing your ways. I am going to try to be as impartial as possible because my children were...difficult. I was SOOOO HAPPY we were seated about as far away from others as we could be. The Cornhole was fun, and that helped offset the somewhat slow service - I think they were short-staffed given everything. We just ordered pizza and the Caesar salad. I have a whole lot of love for this place. They make a mean cherry bomb. Not the disgusting kind made out of UV wannabe cherry vodka and red bull, but a real cherry bomb, made with Gray Goose Vodka and Door County cherry juice. It's a delightful drink that I highly recommend everyone should at least try once and more than once if deemed as fantastic as I do. And if you're impressed by the drinks, just wait till you try the food! May I recommend their ribs, bbq chicken, or steak? All were of the delicious, melt in your mouth variety; cooked to perfection. We wanted some place casual that was open late and this place was suggested. The place is very laid back and a bit on the old school side. The have a game room on the side, as well as darts and a pool table. There is a bar right as you enter, and the dining area is in the back. The menu has a little bit of everything, but its certainly not cheap. We opted for their burger, which came with a small bag of local chips (I was not impressed with them). The burger itself was tasty! We also ordered their individual BBQ chicken pizza, which was good. Not sure it was worth $12, but it tasted fine. Nice thin crust and a sweeter sauce. The wait staff were friendly and helpful. Overall it was good, but nothing exceptional. If we will be in the area, I don't think we would come here again...they just don't stand out. read more

Finally stopped at Northern Grill after passing on the chance the last time I was in Door County. The Granny Smith apple pizza piqued my interest so I tried that. To put it bluntly, it was odd. Not necessarily in a bad way; it's just that I didn't like apple on a pizza as much as I thought I would. Maybe it was the combination of apple and fontina cheese. I also thought it was a bit pricey at $12.50 for an individual pizza. The service helped make up for the pizza as the waiter was informative and quick. I'll be back at some point to try a normal pizza because the one I saw at a different table looked very good. Hopefully the price isn't as high for a normal pizza. read more

Stayed in Door County for the Thanksgiving weekend with family. We had a taste for a fish fry and the parking lot was busy - always a good sign! There was a 10-15 minute wait, but we got to pass the time playing pinball (cool!). When we sat down, our orders were promptly taken and drinks were brought quickly. The fish fry was definitely in the top 5 I have ever tasted. Old Fashioneds were well-made, fish was fresh, tartar sauce was yummy, fries were crispy, bread was fresh, and coleslaw was good too! Server was nice and helpful. Loved the atmosphere. Warm and comfortable. Can see myself hanging out at the bar for a few drinks when I return to Door County. read more

OK I'm giving it 2 stars because the waitress was good and the cherry bomb drink was also good. The food was a complete waste. I got the steak and fish, the fish was not terrible but had an odd flavor while the steak was completely flavorless. For $25 I expected better, my wife also got the steak with the exact same result, completely bland. The American potatoes would have been great but again under seasoned, the corn was just frozen so again no flavor. My daughter had the completely dried out fried chicken and my son got the only bright spot of the evening the small pesto pizza. So after tip I walked out paying $144 and we went to wild tomato and got a pizza which was good. Completely over priced for what we got. We are tourists but expect better. read more

First off, the food is good. The pizza is thin style and tasty. On Saturday evenings, they have ribs that are full of meat and fall off the bone. Second, the service stinks... My wife and I have read the reviews and were perplexed by the bad service comments in the past, but tonight we now fully understand the reason and don't worry fellow yelpers, WE HAVE CRACKED THE CODE! There is a sweet blond girl with glasses and a long pony tail that is personable and provides great service. Then there is probably the most aloof 6'6' guy who couldn't be more passive and slow. Seriously, its laughable and how horrible he is as a server. It amazed us at how slowly he meanders around the restaurant providing terrible service to all his tables yet with a complete smile and look of confidence while doing absolutely nothing. You get her, you are good. You get him, be prepared for no refills, doesn't take your plates, you wait forever for everything and its like talking to a cardboard box. Sorry man, find a new job. All in all, good food and a crap shoot on which type of service you get. Oh and this review was done in the winter when the restaurant wasn't very busy. YIKES for the summer customers! read more

You don't come here for the food, you come here for the atmosphere. We come here fairly frequently, because it's in Sister Bay, and usually doesn't have a wait. It has a fun bar and really fun outdoor area for kids with a climber, hula hoops and a ping-pong table. The food is very average, and compared to the competition in Door County you would actually call it below average. The kids meals are good, but for adults there's only a couple of things that we have really found that we like over the years. The wine list is small and overpriced. And they're pretty small 3 ounce wine glasses; but, the beer tap selection is good. We were there recently, and the woman's bathroom was out of soap. I told the owner Lisa immediately, and 15 minutes later she still hadn't filled it. Women were really disgusted by this, and when I asked the owner again about it and asked wasn't she concerned that there was a hygiene issue? She said she thought it was more important to serve food. So now I do have some concerns over the sanitary factors in the restaurant. Because that's pretty disgusting. And when a customer talks to you about it twice, and you don't even address it, that may mean where their is smoke there's fire. For as many times as we've been there, we will now not be going back unless the kids really insist. read more

Terrible service, although the waitstaff is very nice, there is one bartender for a huge bar and the entire restaurant and our server was just not attentive. We had the pizza based on the reviews...all I have to say is meh. I am not sure how they stay in business to be honest. Walked in on a Sunday at 4:26pm. We were rudely told that they were closed and no one locked the door and that they open at 4:30pm. IN 4 MINUTES. told us to leave and come back in 4 MINUTES! Are you kidding me? We left and never came back. Also., on a side note, it said to have masks on unless you are eating. Fantastic pizza. We had planned on a nicer sit down dinner, but ended up going to a blues concert in Harborside Park that lasted until after 9 p.m. We stopped in here with no expectations other than that we would leave with full stomachs. The only thing they had going was pizza at that time of the night. We ordered a Pesto, which was very good, but what really took the cake was the Granny Smith Apple pizza. I'm a die hard UW fan and graduate and have eaten boxes worth of Ian's Pizza, known for their unusual recipes, but I've never had anything like this. It sounds like it might be unappealing, but the baking of the apples takes some of the tart out and it's just perfect with a white sauce pizza. This is a great choice for burgers, pizza, e.t.c. Great, traditional Chicago style pizza isn't the easiest thing to find in Door Co. They nail it here though, from the crust up. Very flavorful. Service was excellent, atmosphere is clean and what you'll expect for a place named Northern Grill. Outdoor patio is nice as well, with games.
