I decided to give this place 5 stars for a few reasons. One the customer service was great, baristas were very talkative and, showed my boyfriend and I how a latte is made. Two the lattes were delicious, I got toffee nut latte with liquid sugar (I'm a sweets fan). Three the atmosphere was inviting! Finally there is FREE WIFI, who doesn't love free wifi? Having been a handful of times now, I feel like I can give Northern Light a proper review. Of course, I should say, that the place is pretty nice and all that but I'm a coffee aficionado, so I've got to review it based in large part (90%) on the quality of the espresso drinks. I should start with the fact that these people are devotees to the God of American coffee, David Schomer, who's Vivace (in Seattle; www.espressovivace.com) is the best place for coffee I've ever been. As such, they use his techniques, tampers and even have an espresso machine made by Kees VanderWesten, which is essentially like a Rolls Royce. On my recent trip to Michigan I stopped in both going and coming and both times I had an Americano, and the first time I had an iced white mocha as well. All the drinks were excellent. I wouldn't say transcendent, but really, really solid. In Seattle, this place would get a 4, because there are so many amazing places there, however, in Scranton, PA? This place is a 5. Essentially east of Washington State this place is a 5. I can only say that this place makes me stop in Scranton every time I drive across the country and that can only be a good thing. read more

This is a great little cafe in Scranton and a really nice place to meet up and chat for a while. There are plenty of couches and tables where you can sit around and relax for hours. This is also a great place to study if you're a student at any of the nearby colleges. I can't speak for the coffee since it's been years since I've had it, but I recently had their chai and it was pretty good. Their prices are pretty steep, but really on par with starbucks or any other independent coffee shop. Overall, it's a solid place and really a good place to have in Scranton. read more

I visited this cafe while I was at a convention in scranton and I enjoyed their breakfast options along with coffee! I usually like my coffee with nothing added so I ordered iced americano with sesamee bagel with cream cheese. There was nothing special with bagel or oatmeal (which I tried previous day) but overall, it was a nice cafe to grab a quick breakfast with good strong coffee. The coffee really helped me stay awake during my convention. If you are in Scranton, definitely visit this cafe! read more

Excellent Barista. Coffee is consistantly good. You can tell ownership understands coffee well and the level of espresso and coffee making technology is just right. The espresso machine is a beautiful showpiece. place is clean, I wish there was a good bakery around so they can source great quality of pastries (just like the coffee) but I don't know of one. Wegman's has the best pastry quality at the moment. Price chopper has the best breads. both don't deliver to restaurants of course... :-) Keep ot up. read more

In town for work and needed to kill some time before my flight. This was a great coffee shop. Loved the atmosphere, style of the place and music. They have wifi and comfortable seating if you planning to spend a few hours there. I had a cup of tea and a bowl of soup. The had a really nice selection of pre made sandwiches and salad. The vegetarian chili soup I had was so good. I really enjoy finding places like this when I'm on the road. Quaint, quiet, relaxing and great food & drink options. read more

I didn't come here for food - I came for a decent cup of coffee. And oh my, it was a life-changing experience! The beans were perfectly roasted, the roast was super fresh. And - it felt like the God shot! Cappuccino tasted and looked great, too. It contained proper amount of milk and had a great texture. I was also surprised to find out they roast by themselves. I'm new to the area and was looking for a place to have a relaxed, vegetarian-friendly meal and this place fit that to a T. There were two employees on the counter and both were giving me advice on what to order and cracking jokes, so I definitely didn't experience the service trouble some people reported on. I was with a friend, and all together we got a mint tea, an americano with flavor shot, a mediterranean wrap, a southwest wrap and a huge chocolate chip cookie to split - and it came to about $21. Both wraps were good and the cookie was perfect - all gooey and crispy on the outside without being burned. I overheard one worker discussing with another customer that they just hired a full-time baker and that everything but the bagels are freshly made or brought in daily from other local places. There's a whole page of teas to choose from and my americano tasted great. (I tried a shot of their toasted almond mocha flavor in it.) About 1/4 of their sandwiches/wraps/salads menu were veg friendly and the mediterranean was even vegan, so that made me happiest of all. I'm living a ways out of town, but I definitely plan on going back next time I'm in downtown Scranton to work my way through trying some more tea and espresso drinks. read more

I love Northern Light. I'm so happy Scranton has a place like it! Great vibes and great chai. It's my go-to place whenever I meet with my friends downtown. The only time I shy away from it is during First Fridays because it gets *insanely* packed. I really enjoy all the creative posters and flyers and things that local businesses and groups display inside. Oh! And all the local art. Super friendly staff too. Highly recommended stop if you're downtown for the day. I can't really review the coffee because I don't like coffee. Oh well! read more

Question: Why would a coffee shop (assuming the owners want a viable business) only have 1 person attending to customers on a Monday morning at 7:30 AM? It's Monday, people regularly drink coffee in the morning, you are 200 ft from the Hilton, (more walk in traffic). You had at 7:30 AM 7 people in line waiting for coffee, only 1 attendant and NO muffins or any other food out (e.g. more revenue). You lost my sale of not only coffee this morning but two organic salads. That was about 15.00 + in revenue that turned around walked out the door and spent my money at Starbucks at the Hilton. I've only been to Northern Light a few times, as my daily routine does not take me near central Scranton. I was very happy when I was nearby and decided to stop by for a coffee! It was super cozy and had a nice atmosphere when I walked in. However, I was extremely disappointed to find that they only had two kinds of coffee, LOTS of tea though. I was also annoyed when one of the men behind the counter gave me an attitude whenever I had a question. I am Big on good customer service and this place does not have it. I daresay the local Starbucks baristas at least give you a friendly Hello when you walk through the door! If you like warm, cozy, cute cafes, with plenty of tea but not so much coffee or personal warmth, this is the place for you. If you're not a tea totaler and have an aversion to rude baristas, then this is not the place for you. read more

The barista's are knowledgeable not only about the correct procedure to make each drink but about the coffee beans as well. I was able to get a table at each visit.
