I needed a birthday cake for a family celebration. Ordered the cake the week before and took the baker's suggestion for chocolate cake with buttercream icing. When I picked up the cake, I also purchased the flourless chocolate cake and a slice of gluten free cake. Everything was excellent! The birthday cake had rave reviews, was completely devoured, and everyone was extremely pleased. The flourless chocolate cake was excellent as well, very dense, and delicious. Just had a disappointing experience- went to celebrate my nephew's 5th birthday. The person waiting on us was very rude the whole time and rushed us along. She was clearly very annoyed to interact with us. Then when we told the person at the cash register that she had been rude he said, "well we have other priorities. We are busy." I take that to mean that taking care of customers is NOT a priority. We are in Corolla often and we will not be back. read more

This little hidden gem has the best baked goods in the Outerbanks. The strawberry cream cheese croissants are to-die-for and the coffee is brewed to perfection! Everything we ordered was delicious: regular croissants, cinnamon rolls, doughnut holes, blueberry and lemon curd cake, and canoli were enough to keep us going back. On our last day in Nags Head, we drove 40 minutes out of our way for one last indulgence before heading home! My husband, our 7 month old and I decided to try out this bakery for a quick breakfast and coffee during our weekend stay in Corolla. We were not disappointed at all! The staff was super friendly and welcoming, I had the blueberry coffee cake which was AMAZING and the hubby devoured his huge cinnamon bun...which he clearly enjoyed. Out of donuts at 10:15 which is fine but when we asked where else to find a donut we were told that they aren't going to recommend a competitor and to come back tomorrow. Wow seriously?! The food is fine at this bakery and I have absolutely no problems with that. I did have a significantly negative experience that related to service. I stopped just prior to this past Thanksgiving. When we walked in, there was a person mopping the floor in back of the counter. In the back of the bakery, it looked and smelled like cooking was going on in preparation for Thanksgiving. He said, "We are closed". I apologized and noted that the open sign was on. He replied that they just keep the open sign on all the time, which did not make much sense. He did invite to take our order anyway. I then asked if he could tell me the name of a particular pastry, and pointed to it. He replied, "Obviously, I can't see it from here"; and put his mop down, came over and told me. Then when I paid, I apparently pushed the wrong button on the screen. He directed me to stop pushing it over and over, and made an inappropriate remark to me about my lack of understanding of technology. Two things seemed apparent about this encounter: This guy did not want to serve me, and he definitely projects, intentional or not, a seriously ageist attitude toward anyone over 40. I chose not confront him on this inappropriate behavior, given that there were others present, and it did not seem like educating this guy about how to treat people would be productive in that moment. Two stars only because the chocolate cake inside the cake was pretty good. But the mint chocolate chip icing/frosting was waxy in texture and toothpaste-like in flavor. Granted, we went with mint chocolate chip (risky in the first place, I guess), but no one in our large group liked it, and we really wanted to. Maybe other items are good from here, but we got carrot cake cupcakes for the mint-rejecting kids in our group, and the cream cheese frosting there was a weird, waxy texture, too.
