My FAVORITE place to buy fruits! The fruits are always ripe and the prices are always better than the average chain. I bought all these fruits for 11 bucks! They also have a huge selection of pan dulce (sweet bread) and cookies:) On the other end of the store, you can buy all kinds of meat that are already prepared/marinated. They also offer already made items such as chicken and tacos. I personally like the ceviche. They offer a variety of types, such as spicy, shrimp, crab and so on. I get the spicy crab. Half a pound of that with some tortilla chips always hits the spot! If you haven't been, check this place out! read more

If you want something different than you usual American and Asian supermarket, try this one. Northgate is a Mexican Supermarket, probably the best one I been to in L.A. If you like Cheviche, this place is lowest price I see, $5 per pound! and Shrimp one is $6 per pound. They sell huge tamales for little bit over a buck. Sadly there's no tablet in here unlike payless. Produce and bakery look better on par with most market. If you want the best soda, import one from Mexico like Jarritos and Coca Cola are the very best, it use sugar cane and is bottle too. You can find both in Northgate market. This is not the place to find your microwave food, hardly any here, and their domestic canS food is a bit pricey. A neighborhood store That isn't small. This is a chain market catering to Latin food. A clean and we'll organized store. They have a Panaderia where they bake all kinds of goodies! It's smells wonderful! There's a Tortilleria where they make Fresh tortillas, corn or flour & uncooked flour tortillas. Tostadas, Sope, tortilla chips, & Masa. It really neat Watching the production of the tortillas. There's a Cocina for prepared foods, salsa, ceviche, chichirones, Aqua Frescas, Mexican shrimp cocktails, rotisserie chicken, fried fish etc.... lots to choose from. The produce department has lots of fresh fruits & vegetables. On most days, they have fresh fruit salad prepared. Prices are very reasonable. The staffs that work there are helpful & they will help you choose the produce That is at its peak like watermelon or pineapple. The meat department is pretty organized & clean. When it's busy, they go by ticket numbers. Just pull put a ticket and wait for your number to be called. I buy my prepared Carne Asada & chicken here. Pretty well marinated & fresh. read more

One good thing about El Monte are the choices in Mexican foods. Right by this grocery store, you will see King Taco, Alberto's, and Alfredo's. A few blocks east or west, you will run into many other Mexican fast food joints. As for this grocery store, I don't shop here too often, unless I need something specific like salsa, tortillas, tamales, meat, etc. I've browsed through other products in the store and I don't think the prices are cheap at all. Items like ice cream, chips, and soda are much cheaper at Albertson's, Von's, or Ralph's. As for produce, I believe the Green Farm Market (a few streets down - Asian supermarket) offer better prices. I highly recommend picking up some of their French Rolls (Bolillo) - 4 for $1! I'm not kidding when I say that people line of for them. Sometimes, these people get into arguments with each other when the baker brings out a fresh batch right out of the oven. One time I was there, the station that holds the french rolls was empty. The baker told me it would take another 10 minutes until the next batch is ready. I decided to walk around the store. When I arrived back to the station 5 minutes later, a small line had already formed. There were many older ladies standing around hold their plastic bag and tongs. I decided to step back for this because many of them looked blood thirsty and I didn't want to lose an arm over a few pieces of bread. Once the baker arrives to make the first transfer, the crowd begins to get excited as you can smell the fresh aroma coming from the trays of freshly baked bread. As soon as he gives the go-ahead....tongs start flying in to grab a few. This single filed line soon became a riot when people start accusing others of cutting in line. I'm not kidding you, this was hilarious. By the time I got to the bread station, there was just a few french rolls left, enough to satisfy my trip down to Northgate. As I said, I recommend this...which is why I decided to devote its own paragraph to write about it. Overall, I recommend this place to people who are looking for fresh Mexican ingredients. If you're hoping to stop by for some basic things for a late night movie at home, such as ice cream or chips...then it's not a great place. I went today to shop with my mother at the Northgate market and honestly I'm very disappointed with an employee name Zoila. She helped us scan our items to purchase and she was very disrespectful and racist. All because we wanted to have more bags for our items. She said the bags were sold separately and we were okay to pay for them but unfortunately she decided to respond back to my mother that everything she wants in this country have to be bought and nothing is free like her "country" which made my mom feel very disappointed and heartbroken because nobody has ever given her such a bad attitude in this market. Aside of that she was also saying we had to respect this country because the laws aren't the same as my mothers "country" again she was being racist. I did ask for the manager but she did ignore me and told me to go look for him myself. I just told her that next time to be more kind and respectful because it's not fair for someone else to go through something so awful especially being racist. Nasty, overpriced and smelly. I have bought meat on two different occasions here that was bad. Once was ground beef that just about stunk my house up horribly and the other time was chicken. The cashier noticed the rotten chicken smell before I paid for it. This place is also very overpriced for the stuff they have. Also several times I have seen people lift the lids of the nutts and candy and stick their nasty hands I there to grab a snack for shopping. The Pan Dulce is never soft and fresh and I have seen kids who parents believe it's ok to let kids roam around and do whatever stick their snotty hands in the pan dulce. I steer clear from this store. Even though it is literally a 5 min walk from my house I choose to drive to Arcadia to shop for my fresh food. read more

Growth! I have been coming to this Northgate for about six years now and everytine I come, I always see the store doing better. From hot foods, groceries, to the bakery, this place does it all. Northgate has a wide selection of options that will fullfil your grocery needs. I tend to always drop by every other week for my grocery needs since the location is only 10 minutes away from my house. The ambiance and employees are always so helpful. When you walk in, it feels warm, welcoming, and traditional. It feels as if you want to be there. My only complaint is the mix seafood in the meat department. I have bought mix seafood twice that was not good. I'm not sure if the mix seafood sells or stays there but haven't had such a great experience. Overall, I will give this location a solid 4/5. read more

I want to give 5 stars to Mr Ramiro from produce department because when I was looking for soursop leaves (guanábana leaves)very desespérate because of my wife's médical condition, unfortunately Northgate El Monte doesn't carry that product, so he very kindly told me to go the one in Northgate West Covina ! This has been my local market for about 3 years now, only a few minutes form my home. The market has always been very clean, and all the workers are friendly. Ever since the Corona Virus pandemic has began, Northgate Market has been one of the few Markets I've been to that has gone over and beyond. They literally wipe the whole cart down right infront of you and have it ready, you never have to touch a dirty cart. I've gone to a few different markets and workers are frustrated and uneasy (totally understandable), but at Northgate ALL workers are happy and polite. I swear you can see their smiles through the mask. Thank you Northgate for making my market trip easy and safe!! read more

Their pre-made food selection is awesome! I've seen tinga, chicken mole, chicharron in salsa, chicken wings, tortas, beef and chicken soups, tamales, chile rellenos, rice, beans, all kinds of really good food. The plate is $6.99 and soups start at $4.99 a cup. They have sample cups as well. This review is for the Coctel de Camaron my wife got me, it really tastes authentic and FRESH. It had 10 huge, clean shrimp and full of avocado. The price was $7.99 and well worth it, super full. Went there on Monday morning hopping it wasn't too crowded to order food for a birthday party coming up, was told by a lady there was no order form and that someone was going to call me back. That call never happened if through I tried to reach them three times! Mind you I was going to order a crazy amount to feed 300 guests. Northgate Market is the big supermarket chain that seems to be popping up throughout the Valley where Albertsons use to be. Case in point this one. It use to be an Albertson's Market. The simplest explanation for Northgate supermarket would be predominately Latino base food products. How is that?? Did I get it right?? Oh wait! I am Latino! and I love love love eating and cooking Mexican, Cuban, and every other Latino cuisine. I gotta check this place out. Great Cheap Produce! Mangos .79 cents each, Avocados Small but ripe for .75 cents each. Bananas, Apples, Melons, Onions, Potato's, etc, etc, for really cheap cheap prices. Every dried Chile known to man to make all of my sauces. A huge Meat Department! The kind you have to take a number for. Pork Shoulder to make my Chile Verde or my Cuban Style Roasted Pork, $1.79 per pound, Small raw Shrimp, Cleaned and ready for my Shrimp Enchiladas in my homemade Green Chile Sauce. $4.49 per pound. Round Steak pounded paper thin for Milanesa, $2.50 per pound. Cotija Cheese! My salty Guilty Pleasure! $3.79 per pound. The Salsa Bar! Oh man, This stuff is good. Red Salsa, Green Salsa, Roasted Chile Salsa, and the sickest most delicious Avocado salsa. That one is my favorite for $4.25 per pound. Tortillas and chips handmade right there for you. Not to mention the fresh baked bolillo bread, 5 for 1 dollar. Split them open and throw some refried beans and cheese on top. Pop em in the oven for a few minutes BAM! I don't understand why people complain about this place. You know where you are coming to so don't freak out and avoid high expectations LOL. I personally don't visit this supermarket a lot, only when I'm in the mood of cooking a traditional Nicaraguan dish and this is the only place where i can find my ingredients....i can't complain. it's cheap. Yes, maybe it's not the best quality but is very affordable. People are nice, always willing to help. I think their deli is pretty cool, lots of options. I LOVE their agua frescas. Plenty of parking spaces. It gets too crowded but it's normal in a Latino neighborhood. Just be careful, be nice, and don't forget your good manners ;) read more

My friend was throwing a pot luck, so I wen to this Northgate since it was near his house. I had never been here before so I had no idea where to find my ingredients. I was greeted and offered assistance by an Anthony S. He spent a great amount of time showing me the different sections of the store that I was looking for. I was very impressed with his level of professionalism. When I went to the meat department, I immediately noticed the freshness of the meats. I've worked in a grocery store before so I can tell when meat is fresh just from glance. It was a little bit difficult to choose my order because they had such a vast variety of different cuts/meats. They had a lot of pre-marinated meats too (super convenient.) My order consisted of marinated carne asada and some T-Bone steaks. After getting the meat, I swung by the produce on my way to the cashier just to see what they had. Very impressive selection. Everything looked fresh and lively. I even bought an apple because one was shining right at me (delicious apple) After grilling the meats at the pot luck, everyone agreed that the steaks were a hit. I regretted not getting a few more pounds because we finished it too quickly. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience shopping at this Northgate. Prices were great, customer service was excellent, but most importantly, the quality of products within the store are top notch. read more

This is a fantastic supermarket. I try to visit this place after my basketball games during the weekends. The thing I like about this place is they make their own tortillas. They have a Hispanic lady making the tortillas all day long. Just walk up to the tortilla lady and ask her which batch is the fresh ones and you can tell they are fresh because the tortillas are still warm! It will cost about $2.50 for a bag of 48 tortillas. What a great deal. I also pick up some homeade salsa with the marinated taco meat. The salsa is homemade and cost about $1. The taco meat is awesome beacuse it is marinated and cut up for you already. All you need to do is fire up the pan and grill the meat for 2 minutes and you got yourself some pretty awesome tacos. Other places sell the marinated meat in large portions and you have to chop it up at home. Lastly this place makes some pretty good desserts. I normally pick up the cheesecake myself. They sell them in different flavors such as regular, carmel apple, strawberry, choclate, and etc. There is a big paking lot, but this market draws in a lot of people and you may have trouble finding a parking spot. Parking: Awful. This plaza has several businesses and just not enough parking..so if you come make sure you come walking if not you will be looking for days. Spots are small and some people that visit this market just don't know how to park. Service: Cashiers are nice. People in the food court are polite. Produce: Inconsistent. I've visited this store on days when the produce is beautiful and fresh..i've also come on days when i look at their produce and wonder how it's not against the law to sell people things that are more than likely rotting. The market is fairly small and the isles are super close this means you WILL be bumping karts with people. Some times there's a funky smell in the whole store..other times it's not there..not sure what it is. Meats are alright. The bread here is a bit on the sweet side for me. We always shop at Northgate and we have never had a problem, until 09/06/15. We had a last minute bday party and needed a cake asap. My sis in law and I went straight to the bakery and noticing only a few selections of cakes, we asked for a 3 milk cake that cost $28.99 - it was the last one and we were relieved to get it for our guests. The young man behind the counter, instead of using two hands to pull the cake out, he tried using one hand to slide the cake onto his palm and forearm. The cake slid straight into a trash can that was right next to him and the dessert case. Instead of sounding genuinely sorry, he laughed at what he had done, along with his other co-workers behind the counter and merely said, chuckling, "Sorry, this was the last one. not much we can do." Not wanting to sound upset, my sis in law asked for the next cake, a much smaller cake that cost $14.99 - since we had no choice. Then, we were asked if we wanted anything written on it, which we did - not questioning how he was going to be able to fit the writing on the cake - believing he would figure out how to do it. When he hands us the cake, we do not notice until we get to the cash register, that he had the most unprofessional and horrible red gel writing. Already agitated, running late and in a hurry, we bought the cake as is. But, we took a pic of it as proof. Not only were we so disappointed that he ruined the original, larger 3 milk cake we wanted, but, that he also ruined the smaller 3 milk cake with his hideous gel writing. Well, to add insult to injury, when we finally cut the cake to serve it, it wasn't even a 3 milk cake! It was dry!!! We will no longer be purchasing our pastries at Northgate market. We were not happy with our experience, and the cake should have been the prettiest thing on the table, not the most disappointing. **Update : I sent an email - actual more than a couple of emails - as suggested by the business owner below. The only reason I go here is that it is close to my house and the tamales. I needed eggs for my banana bread batter so I headed over there and once I stepped in I can smell the Tamales... drool I was pleasantly surprised this time when I had the pork tamale. It was bigger than usual. Moister than usual. More meat than usual. More flavorful than usual. Oh there's also chile/pepper inside that was never there all the other times I have eaten it. What I really like is that it does not have a lot of lard in it like many other places I tried. It might just be me, but I remember this place was more larger and spaced out then it is now, cause its a really small market for such a big plaza. The fruits are, as it seems, so fresh! All the times I've been here, I encountered fresh fruits! (: Yay! And today, I was looking at cookies, a sweet employee asked if I needed help once I was eyeing this cookie that was WAYY up high and he knew I couldn't reach it. LOL. I said no thanks since, the prices are honestly expensive! This place is so much better since the remodeling. I love the variety of foods. All the guys that are in the aisles are very nice and have good customer service. The manager that is always wearing pink is also very nice and I love the way she helps during the holidays to make sure we get excellent service! Walked in there to grab a few things and was amazed how different it looks after remodeling the place. The food part was amazing. Bunch of different things to eat. Salad bar, soups, and all kinds of different hot foods. So I went and ordered the Torta Cubana and wasn't disappointed at all. Very tasty. Will definitely be ordering it again.
