First heard about Patisserie Bluejay from SGV eats where quite a few members highly recommended their mango cake. Originally wanted to order a mango and yuzu cake but was informed that I needed to provide at least 5 days notice. Do note they are closed on Mon and Tues so plan accordingly. I should've done more research as the cake I received was nothing like what I was expecting. Here I was expecting a mousse like cake but instead it just seemed like layers of jello. Once we cut the cake and placed it on its side and cut into it with a fork, all the layers came apart. For those who don't like a super sweet cake, this would be perfect for you. BLUEJAY has never disappointed me with their products! I feel so blessed to always have the chance to try their different cakes. A few days ago was the Mid-Autumn Festival, and they had three flavors of mooncakes available for sale. When I saw them, I was like, OMG, they look so good! -- and they're mini ones too! I wanted to order four boxes, but they mentioned they were short on boxes and a few other materials, so they might only be able to make one for me. We dropped in to buy some cookies and check out their cake selection and chat with its very kind employees! I have passed by this place but never got to buy their goods until now. I went on a weekday and they said that cake slices are usually only made during the weekends. Luckily, I got a osmanthus pear, caneles and matcha chocolate. All the desserts were delicious, with the osmanthus pear cake slices being my favorite. I liked how all of them were not overly sweet. The osmanthus pear slice was not only visually stunning but the softness + pear fruitiness was incredible. The caneles I ate about 6 hrs after buying to share with my gf. They were still semi crunchy on the outside and chewy spongy on the inside with a nice caramel taste. I let my gf eat the whole matcha chocolate cookie and she loved it. Cute boutique bakery! I heard about this place from an Eater article last year and had been meaning to try it since. We ordered a slice of mango and yuzu cake, canele, and a milk tea cookie. I'm very picky about my caneles and this one passed the bar: no white butts, crispy and light exterior, with a slightly custard-y interior. The flavors of the cake and cookie really shone through, and you can tell the team has put extensive recipe testing to get unique flavors that you can't find anywhere else. However, it seems like there's still some management issues that this place is running into. While the sitting are was really cozy, the walls were plastered with busy text about how the store can't keep up with demand. We've been to Patisserie Bluejay a few times before but this was the first time we went for cookies instead of cake and canales. I gotta say, the cookies are freaking amazing! We picked up four: sesame, matcha chocolate, milk tea, and coffee pecan. The sesame one was a bit mild and was reminiscent of a peanut butter cookie but the other three...WOW! They were so strong flavored! It was like having a cup of coffee, milk tea, and matcha and the texture was perfect. Crispy exterior and soft, gooey interior. Really really delicious. Will definitely be back to try their other cookies and gotta get that tom yum cake too. We enjoyed everything we tried - especially the Coconut Mango Mousse Cake - light, refreshing, and not too sweet - perfect cool treat for summer! We tried the mini Coconut Mango Mousse Cake, a Chocolate Marshmallow cookie, Strawberry Chocolate cookie, and a Coffee Canelé. The cookies were excellent in texture and flavor. Both were great but the clear winner for us was the strawberry chocolate with real dried strawberries embedded. Their cookies are soft, pillowy, and not too sweet which we love! And we ate them last - so about three days after we bought them and they were still fresh tasting and delicious. The coffee canelé was also lovely - slightly crisp outer shell with an airy, creamy center and nice coffee flavor profile - perfect snack size for a small dessert and we will definitely be trying more of their fun flavors next time. The Coconut Mango Mousse Cake was divine!! It's layers of light coconut on top of mango mousse with a mango jelly filling and popping boba and grass jelly on top - it's the perfect summer dessert - cool and so fresh. And again, not too sweet - perfect balance - one we will keep coming back for! They had several different mousse cakes available the day we visited so we look forward to trying other flavors. The shop is clean and inviting but there is limited seating so it's more of a to-go type place. The staff member that assisted us was very nice and helpful. Prices are excellent for the area and the quality. They offer custom made cakes but require quite a bit of advance notice since they're so small (understandable). However my absolute favorite item here is the black sesame cookie - perfectly nutty and not too sweet! Their milk tea cookie is also fantastic (and usually sells out early). I've tried a variety of cakes and other pastries here, and have shared them with many others. They said to pick the cake anytime after 12pm and it was ready as promised. They are wonderful people, easy to deal with. And the durian cheesecake...oh man. Next, the flavors of the cookies are unique and they work well together. 4 1/2 Stars 2/3/2024 Was excited to check out this new bakery due to all the glowing reviews! Went yesterday not long after it opened. PUNCH PUFF Read good reviews on their version of a cream puff. I say their version because it seems their punch puff is not a traditional choux pastry, as they add an almond topping. Disappointingly, their choux pastry was very dry and super crunchy. That is what I got with each bite. If it wasn't for the vanilla pastry cream that created a barrier from all the crusty, dry,  crunchy choux pastry, this would have been really, really bad. Although it's more bad than good. The vanilla cream filling was good and I wished there was more. I did buy an extra and tried it after it was stored in the fridge and it tastes better after the cream puff has softened. The pastry cream does taste eggy compared to it being eaten the day before. However, I would not recommend their punch puff. I've had better cream puffs or crispy cream puffs (Choux au Craquelin) at other bakeries in LA. CAKES All the cakes were delicately made and because of the gelatin fillings and jellys on top, it was a jiggly cake. All were very delicate and light in sweetness, as most Asian cakes would taste like. All were very delicate and feminine cakes. Most of these cakes had sponge cake on the bottom, pastry cream or cream, then a  gelatin-flavored middle, and then topped with a decorative jelly. Please refrigerate as soon as possible! All of the cakes started melting on my way back home! There was so much traffic too, so I had an even longer drive back home! So I had to eat them right as I got home. The cakes started losing shape; cakes were no longer standing, but leaning to the side like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. PEAR OSMANTHUS CAKE You can taste the pear upfront with soft pear pieces in between. Very delicate, layered cake with sponge cake, cream, and jelly on top. You can taste a bit of the osmanthus in the back, but the pear is the star of the show. ROSE AND LYCHEE Beautifully decorated cake! Love the details of the jelly on top with edible gold leaf sheets and dried rose petals inside the jelly. You can taste both the rose and lychee and neither one was overpowering the other. Vanilla spongecake, cream and jelly. OOLONG PEACH You can taste the strong oolong tea and a hint of peach in the background. Yet the oolong flavor is strong. Anyone who loves oolong will enjoy this cake. JASMIN CHOCOLATE This had a jasmine tea and milk chocolate combo. Most of it had gelatin in it. A very thin layer of cake on the bottom, while the rest was chocolate and jasmine flavored gelatin. Almost this soft mousse-like texture due to the cream, yet it did have that gelatin texture as well. Was really hoping to try their black sesame cheesecake duet cake slice and their canelé, but they were unavailable. Out of all the cakes I tried today, I enjoyed the Jasmin Chocolate the most, then the Rose Lychee cake. BLACK SESAME COOKIE Very good! The black sesame flavor was all there! I was really impressed! A thick, buttery, soft cookie with a light crunch on the outside. There were gems of black sesame sugar shards inserted on top, which made it even better! This was my favorite out of the two cookies. However, cookie becomes more softer when you eat the next day. Keep that in mind. Texture change does make or break a cookie. MATCHA COOKIE The matcha cookie had a similar cookie texture as the black sesame cookie. It was also thick and soft. There were loads of matcha flavor in it, which was also sweet and floral. The white chocolate morsels added a sweetness to it. This was good! AMBIANCE / SEATS / LOCATION Located in a run-down strip mall in Arcadia. Inside, there is a table of 4 and a table for 2. The metal tables and chairs are not the coziest nor aesthetically pleasing to dine indoors. There were some plant decorations, but it's not Instagrammable. CUSTOMER SERVICE The woman at the counter took all the orders while the owner and pastry chef worked behind in the kitchen. Customer service was okay. She wasn't particularly friendly nor welcoming. But overall service wasn't bad. Ordering several slices of cake and other goods does take time for them to box up too.  Since this is a fairly new bakery, it wasn't busy. Whenever I venture out to an area I don't frequent, I try to Yelp good bakeries. This one came up and I was pleased to see that even late in the afternoon on a Saturday, there were still many flavors of cookies and cakes to choose from. I got a slice of oolong peach for myself and the soju cheesecake for my husband. Also grabbed a strawberry cookie, coffee pecan cookie, and a milk tea cookie. I ate the strawberry cookie on the way home and it was perfection! The dried strawberries on top were such a delightful pop of brightness and sweetness. The cookie itself was soft on the inside and a little crispy on the edges. 10/10. My husband and I both sort of liked our cakes. There was nothing wrong with them or anything. They were beautiful and were of good quality. Just could have used a touch more sweetness. This is just personal preference, however, thus my 5 star rating. Visited here on a Wednesday 1:45 pm majority of the items were sold out but I was lucky enough to get the last piece of lychee cake. I never knew that this pastry place was in the small shopping area that I passed by daily until my friend told me about it. The shop itself is really small and cute. They don't have a huge selection, but what they do have, they do very well. We got lots of things to try, but my favorites were the sesame cookie, pistachio cheesecake, and the Punch Puffs. Although their cakes are delicious, I do think the cake slices are a little overpriced at about $7.50, but I do think the cookies and puffs are worth the $4 and $4.50. The cookie had good flavor and the perfect chewiness I like in a cookie. I definitely will come back for the puffs, they were amazing. One of the prettiest cakes I've had in a while Patisserie Bluejay is a total gem! Their cakes are not only pretty to look at but also packed with unique and delicious flavors.
